Rivers State Govt introduces fuel subsidy: cuts price from N141 to N137

The Rivers State Government today Tuesday January 10th introduced a N4 subsidy on fuel sold in the state. The govt said it in a broadcast that it had reached an agreement with independent marketers to cut the price from N141 to N137. The governor, Rotimi Amaechi, said his government will pay the N4 price difference.

*Linda shakes head* So do we commend him now or what?
These our leaders don't seem to understand the pains of the masses. FYI, anyone who can pay 137, can pay 141, get that right! It makes no difference, it doesn't make life easier. Cost of living has doubled...N4, will not reverse it. Someone told me today, I don't know what this subsidy means, all I know is that I don't want to buy a bag of pure water for N200, (it used to be N80) and I don't want to be spending N700 to go to work everyday, (she used to spend N300). How much do you earn, how much are you going to spend to survive? Please our leaders, have mercy on us, biko!

You have said it all Linda. What is N4 difference? They (the government) must be crazy. Like you have rightfully said, anyone who can pay N137 can afford to pay N141. This government officials will lead Nigeria to a civil war soon. They are so removed from the reality on ground, its not even funny!

I hate the amount we r paying, but these guys r thick skinned. They r not backing down... Nigeria will do what it normally does best....COPE... Pls no abuse me 4 expressing my humble opinion. At d end of the day, how many of us, who r reading LIB ready go fight for fuel subsidy? Na 4 LIB we dey declare our support. Me included :)

WHEN IT COMES TO THE POWER SECTOR(NEPA) WHERE WE KNOW THAT WE STILL HAVE THE SO CALLED CABALS THEN WE WOULD HAVE TO PAY THRU OUR NOSE AGAIN BECAUSE HE CAN NOT FIGHT THE CABALS(CORRUPTION)

OUR DEAR AUNTY NGOZI U PROMISED WE WOULD GAIN FROM THE DEBT REFUND AND OUR UNCLE OBJ PAID THE DEBT BUT YET WE HAVE NOT SEEN ANYTHING.

there is absolutely no need for any1 to be ungrateful now, yes it doesn't make much of a difference but 4 naira is better than 0. Its a start!!!

another opportunity to loot abi? later he will tell us that trillions have been spent on oil subsidy in his state and his govt can no longer afford it bla bla bla.....please tell Mr. Amaechi that he is not being realistic moreso does he understand what is happening at all? anyway Mrs Okonjo Iwela said the governors asked for the removal of oil subsidy by the FG,so he wants to make himself look good in the eyes of the people while Mr.President is bad?
In case this fuel subsidy remains scrapped by the FG , i expect everyone to hold the governors of their states responsible and ensure that they expend the money wisely. Nigerians are fond of saying "He's our son, so let him be!" Let us start putting pressure of the state governors and LG chairmen.

To start with this Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi is an anti-christ, i know he is in full support of the Subsidy removal and he cant wait, vicious idiot! na God go punish you.. i live in Port-Harcourt and i know what this fool that thinks he is smart is doing with Rivers State money, he has destroyed all the roads in that State in the name of working on them just so he will keep collecting money for construction, right now the State is owing Billions of Naira, he is busy buying and building industries in Ghana, the Uk and South Africa. wicked man and his Ogboni cult. like every vicious and heartless politician his down fall is at hand and he will be crushed. enough said LINDA MAKE SURE YOU POST MY COMMENT!!! i mean it..

They (government) just don't get it! Anyway how can they, they don't go to the filling stations to buy petrol as our CBN governor Sanusi Lamido Sanusi pointed out, neither do they feel the pinch of poverty, so it is impossible for them to comprehend. We can barely afford N65 per liter how can we afford N141, N137 or whatever without a reciprocal increase in income, if we they want us to buy at those prices then our income should show a reciprocal increase minimum wages should then be set at N45000 ...abi??? fuel increase almost 150% = minimum wage 150% increase. equation balanced

The govt ought to have done some serious campaign on informing the public why and if subsidy is necessary before enforcing it. We all say cost of living will double but we have not really thought of the benefits if properly managed. Refineries will be built, roads constructed, infrastructures created and this translates to loads of jobs, I see jobs for chemical engineers, civil engineers, accountants, and so on. Should we continue to subsidise petrol and continue to eject millions from universities with no job possibilities or should we suffer somewhat now for a better future. Look at all of Europe in shambles, wht makes us think we might not get there at this rate.

I think the govt b given a chanc this time, maybe a year, see what comes out of the money saved from the subsidy. If nothing changes, then we can strike and bring the nation to it's knees.

I just don't understand why we strike over these issues but do nothing about the amount of money paid government officials or protest about things such as the bill for president's food and things like that.

Anonymous said...

@ Linda, you didn't get the full gist, he also put subsidy on transportation in Rivers state. transporters are charging N50, So Market people don't need to Increase their prices. At least he did something compared to the other Governors that are just Mute.

Ken said...

You guys need to understand that he is simply started his election campaign early.
Whether we like it or not, this wave of revolution will birth a new breed of people and politicians but will also give rise to a lot of the old breed politicians who will attempt to "pull a fast one" by running gimmicks like these in the hopes that they can use it on their election platform.
The fine art of walking the tight rope - Not speaking against the government and yet not speaking for the people. At least till the people have paid the price and its time to reap the rewards.

They say, once fooled . . .shame on them . . . but twice fooled nko???
Mark my words, some idiots will come and tell me how he is a wonderful government who feels the pains of the masses by discounting 4 naira at the pump to alleviate the suffering of the people of Rivers State.
Thunder fire all of them!!

Linda dear, illiteracy is a big disease affecting the lives of all Nigerian politicians. This mumu thinks N4 will show he is on point. Ode no 1. Mr Rivers State governor, your state is at the heart of the oil exploration, so you should be selling free. I did advise you shut up and keep you rivers oil subsidy to yourself because it is obvious you want to use this avenue to steal more funds and reap more money for your selfish purposes. Use that N4, you want to save to make the rural communities better and help put food, clothing and shelter to millions of Nigerians in your region. They need it more than the N4, you want to foolishly save directly into your own pocket. Nonsense politicians. Money makes you all more stupid and vulnerable. Remember, you will get old someday and your children will bear the wrath. So, keep playing stupid business and making ridiculous and shameful plans.

Linda, It is you that does not get it. When you were actively supporting the profligacy in government a few months ago when GEJ was meeting with various interests groups like the youths and doling out N45 000 to people for just attending, you failed to realise it was reckless spending or waste. You spoke so vigorously in support of it not even accepting that it was reckless spending/ waste even when someone indicated that the amount being paid to each participant for a few hours was more than what corpers earn in a whole month!!! You could not feel the corper's pain and now you are making noise. Abeg make me hear word jo!

Ameachi have always been a fool, in 2010, he refused to pay N50m as ransom on 5 Youth corp members kidnapped, saying they FG properties but the following week increase Millitant Rehabilitation Allocation to N500m from N100m, so am not surprised if he is coming up with this kinda foolish idea, DUNDERHEAD IDIOT!

Nigerians, read between the lines! I don't want to post a big essay so let's theorize that he is playing Devil's advocate?

Is Ameachi going to somehow transfer the N4 difference back to the FG? And if he is will other states wisen up and offer even greater difference and pass on the cost back to the FG ? Will the FG then realize what is going on and subsequently hands off completely from providing fuel thereby allowing true market forces to dictate the real price of fuel? Which means you and I MAY (very big MAY)enjoy fuel of less than N65. All of this is possible if.....

Actually any economist will tell you this removal of subsidy is good. Trillions of Naira every year is embezzled in the process of paying subsidy. but Nigerians do not know this. It was the same thing with Nitel. when it was nationalized, prices for phones was sky high,A governor actually said "phone is not for poor people". At first when the govt let go, phone costs were very high, gsm was N45,500. but private marketers entered now you can get it for as low as N5000. it is time for the govt to let go of our oil. let us finally build refineries and hire our youths. in the long run, we will stop importing oil (so it will be even cheaper than ever), we will be refining (so there will be jobs) and we will all jolly! My only problem with this removal is that they didn't properly explain to Nigerians what was going on. In Saudi A when the did theirs, not only did they explain, the took half of the money(about billions) they were using to subsidize and distributed it to their people to help tide the flow.

Opinions, no matter how split or precise will not make the issues at hand go away.
Action and the ability to stand, and stand firm, immovable, not cowering to police irresponsibilities and stupidities, not buying the Government stories and threats, not giving in to fear may resolve this issue.

I fear our pain and hurt may not go past the pages of blogs, tweets, BBM and WhatsApp. I hope we have all it takes to fight till the end cos its just might be the only chance we have to fight for what we believe in. It may be now or never.

Personally, I welcome the subsidy as long as ALL other subsidies stops as well. And by 'other subsidies', I mean ALL the allowances Federal, State and ALL elected officials enjoy.

We seem to be ignorant about a lot of issues. We seem to think one way, and that is why we will continue to slide along a negative path in this country. We are the architects of our own hardship. Let me explain this scenario, 30 litres would cost 1,950 naira @ 65. This amount would take a commercial bus from ibadan to lagos. For a 14-seater bus, at say 1,000 naira per passenger, he would have a gross profit of 14,000 naira. take out his cost of fuel and sundries, he would pocket say 10,000 per trip. now cost of fuel @ 141 naira would cost him 30liters * 141 = 4,230 naira. now this same nigerian has increased his transport fare to 2,100 naira per passenger. he now gets a gross profit of 29,400 naira. I do not believe his expenses would run into 19,400. see that an increment of fuel to 141 does not necessarily translate to what we have now?
THINK.
