Angry OccupyNigeria protesters storm NTA, AIT offices

Protesters at NTA office this evening
Watching the government owned TV station, NTA, you would never think that there's any crisis in Nigeria. They aren't covering the protest or interviewing people against the subsidy removal. On NTA, there's peace and calm in Nigeria and Nigerians love their president.

Well, some protesters stormed their station today to let them know don't appreciate their imbalance reportage.

Meanwhile earlier today, angry protesters threw stones and pebbles into the compound of AIT at Alagbado, accusing the TV station of siding with the government.

linda i have to disagree, i live abroad and there has been constant coverage on the current issues in nigeria by NTA (cant say for AIT) from what i can see here. they seem to have an neutral and impartial stance which is as journalism is meant to be.

NTA makes me sick!!! What a useless station. It's all about the government. To them. What is press if it isn't to deliver news as it is.. Useless station.

In all truthfulness,NTA has been biased on this issue, well yes what do we all expect it is a government owned station,That's not being Professional.

I'm glad Nigerians have finally woken up to understand the political propaganda and mass manipulation of the masses thru the media. They feed the masses a lot of false information While they get rich at our expense.unfortunately a lot of people are ill-informed and only subscribe to the information they get on NTA alone thereby being subjected to mental slavery. It's a new dawn,I guess, as more people are exposed to the politricks. Support the movement for a better naija. #OccupyNigeria!

It is to be expected, the government owns NTA and they never give balanced opinions when it concerns the federal government so I am not surprised, but as for AIT well the government has obviously gotten to them....but come to think of it, it is a privately owned tv station and since we practice freedom of speech and expression in Nigerian I guess they are entitled to chose what opinion they favor so, I wont judge.

No no AIT has been brilliant since d strike took off. As 4 nta thats their way of life, very dormant.

No doubt, NTA has produced biased reporting on the prevailing issue on hand and you don't need a degree from Cambridge to hazard a guess. That's about the only tool the government can use to improve their image.
But for any rascal to say that AIT has been biased in their reportage of the fuel subsidy removal requires that such resides in Aro for a week or two. I do know that AIT has been very unbiased given both opposition and government airtime
This exactly is my issue with the Occupy Nigeria project. Politicians and miscreants are hijacking this all important challenge in our life. They are just grandstanding and looking for cheap publicity.
Instead of facing the issues at hand they are busy insulting the President. It doesn't add up. GEJ and his posture in this matter has been anything but unfortunate if not disappointing but should that give the likes of Bakare a man purpotedly ministering on God's behalf to insult the President and even to the point of inciting the crowd against the government? I believe objectivity should never be misplaced or else this will turn into another jamboree.

One now gets to ask if all this TV stations are part of the Federal governments so called Cabal...... NTA & AIT management should be asked how much has exchanged hands that they are refusing to air the situation as it unfolds...... we will not give up the fight whether NTA, AIT or any other broadcasting station is stalling........

Ds govt is a fraud, not trusted, not true n very insensitive to its masses. obviously NTA n AIT are under strict instructions not to air all of the happenings. sad sad sad. jONATHAN, mADUEKE n all failure. if ur stupid MINISTER OF LABOUR CAN OPEN HIS MOUTH TO SAY GOVERNMENT CANNOT BE MOVED BY MRERE PROTEST ON THE STREETS. THEN DS GOVT HAS NO REGARD N RESPECT WHATSOEVER FOR THOSE WHI ELECTED THEM THERE.

And? What did they achieve? The protest needs to be coordinated o. Some people are getting paid and many are protesting for free. The bank accounts of all the protest leaders and entertainers needs to be probed. Many of them are agents of federal government and have been paid to sabotage the protests. They are the ones giving inside information to the police, SSS and other government agencies. They are only paying lip service and making public appearances just to keep up their treacherous and deceptive acts.

NTA is biased cos it is owned by the government. I don't bother with watching it especially at times like this...talk about throwing professionalism outta the window.
Mshew! Ndi ara!!

I think they are hypocrites...most annoying is when the stupid brodadcasters refer to d protestesters as entertainers, musicians, actors and comedian.Yesterday, they said' people came out to see their favorites actors, comedians and actors ',apparently refererring to protesters that gathered @ Ojota park.Y r they downplaying the whole essence of this action,I think it insulting. Its better they don't comment or talk abt it than rubbish it!

ITS NOT ABOUT SUBSIDY ALONE: The American President has only 2 aircraft, our president has 9 in his fleet and voted money recently to buy 1 more!
The British prime Minister has only 2 official cars, our president has 23 in his pool and only recently voted #300m to buy 2 more bullet/bomb proof ones! Senators in the US earn about $6,000 dollars monthly and dats about what a university professor, or a director in a state dept, or a doctor wt 20yrs experience, or a teacher wt 25yrs experience earn too, but in Nigeria a senator earns #245million per annum! Dats d salary of 25 vice chancellors, or 50 medical doctors, or 60 directors, or 500 sch teachers!
The US, almost d size of Africa with about 500million people have 24 ministers, and 32 govt parastatals and commisions, Nigeria has 42 cabinet ministers, and over 50 government parastatals!
America with about 500million people and more mileage to drive consumes 39m litres of petrol daily, Nigeria with 150m people 60% out of which live in remote areas, yet our govt tells us we consume about 35million ltrs of petrol daily!
IS SUBSIDY REALLY THE PROBLEM OF NIGERIA?
It is time to re-think and re-define. We have to remove money from politics. Political office holders should earn what CIVIL SERVANT'S earns bcos dat's what they are.

NTA is a legal entity, If it chooses to be pro-subsidy removal, its no ones business. During elections in the US, its always obvious which presidential candidate a broadcast station supports. I am Pro-subsidy removal, and I have 100 percent right to make that choice and everyone can disagree with me, but respect my opinion.

Anonymous said...

NTA is useless station.Who watches it anyway? It does not matter what it says because that does not get past Nigeria airwaves .

Anonymous said...

Is anyone still watching NTA? Like, seriously.

NTA channels...I'd rather watch paint dry!

its all about free will. u have the right to protest subsidy. people like me have the right to support it. its that simple. u cant force ur opinion down my throat. i guess that might seem difficult 4 most of you protesting to grasp. There is too much misinformation outthere and people are just getting emotional without getting the facts right. Kudos to NTA for refusing to be dragged into one side reporting. There are obviously different opinions on this.

All of the comments I read here are all educating. Thanks to all the contributors and much to the objective ones. I'll advice our people to stop raining insults and abuses or curses on others even though most deserve it. (insults, abuses and curses) shows how much u can turn out to be like the accused. Good tree, good fruit. If we want this nation to be good we as persons must change. Remember, these our so called leaders that we accuse were born among us and were produced from among us. We are the bad crop and they are our punishment. Lets change.
N.B (there is a govt, infallible, incorruptible, just and true. Subsidy or not it takes care of HIS own). The righteousness of God is the answer.

“We cannot pander to the threats of the people we RULE.” - Minister of Labour, Emeka Wogu

We disagree.

DEMOCRACY IS A GOVERNMENT OF THE PEOPLE, BY THE PEOPLE, FOR THE PEOPLE.

Chapter 2, Section 14 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria states:

1. The Federal Republic of Nigeria shall be a State based on the principles of democracy and social justice.

2. It is hereby, accordingly, declared that:

a. SOVEREIGNTY BELONGS TO THE PEOPLE of Nigeria from WHOM GOVERNMENT THROUGH THIS CONSTITUTION DERIVES ALL ITS POWERS AND AUTHORITY;

b. The SECURITY and WELFARE of the people shall be the primary purpose of government: and

c. The PARTICIPATION by the PEOPLE in their government shall be ENSURED in accordance with the provisions of this Constitution.

On Trust

Current Minister of Petroleum (Transport in 2007) cried over the state of Benin – Ore Road. Same road to be completed under SURE, 5 years later.

Minister of Finance served in the same role in 2005 when we paid $18 billion to the Paris Club to clear our debts to provide infrastructure and development projects.

These Ministers are asking us to trust them again in 2012. Can you blame Nigerians if we choose not to?

NEXT STEPS

1. Revert to N65 (that is, status quo, so we can start GENUINE DIALOGUE)

2. FOCUS on securing lives and property of Nigerians

3. Plug the holes in the oil sector

4. Provide a framework for proper deregulation of the sector by passing PIB.

5. Cut government expenditure

6. Provide power

Fellow Nigerians....

This issue unites ALL OF US across social, religious, ethnic and demographic lines and we will use this to push for a government that's accountable to US

This is NOT only about fuel subsidy removal. You can't add more money to a corrupt system and expect miracles. “Wasteful leadership cannot make prudent investments.”

We ask all Nigerians to continue to make their voices heard, in a peaceful and non-violent manner, to push for the change we desire. Join a protest, get EDUCATED about the issues, educate someone.

Nigeria will be great!

NLC Declares Weekend Break For Strikes, Rallies And Protests
Posted: January 13, 2012 - 14:17

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) and Joint Action Front (JAF) commend the Nigerian people for turning out in their millions since Monday January 9, 2012, to protest the astronomical increase in the price of PMS (Petrol). We commend them for their resolute stand and insistence in struggling for a better country.

The Labour Movement and its civil society allies after nationwide consultations has decided that this weekend, Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th January, 2012, will be observed as strike, protest and rally-free days.

We ask Nigerians to utilize these days to rest, restock and get re-energized for the continuation of the strikes, rallies and protests from Monday 16th January, 2012.

Discussions with Government
The NLC, TUC and their allies in the Civil Society Movement on Thursday 12th January 2012 met with the Senate leadership, Nigeria Governors Forum and the Executive Arm.

At the meeting, Labour asked the Presidency to suspend the new petrol (PMS) price increases announced on January 1, 2012. In return, we offered to suspend forthwith, the strikes, mass rallies and street protests. We also suggested that an expanded committee be set up which would discuss the fuel subsidy issue and pricing for petrol.

The Government side presented a counter proposal asking Labour to negotiate new fuel prices. Since we had no such mandate, Labour declined and decided to return to its National Executive Council meetings, which will be held on Saturday 14th January 2012 for a possible expanded mandate.

Labour commends the National Assembly for its intervention and further urges the Presidency to be more reconciliatory towards the people and show more understanding and sensitivity to their feelings and collective interests.
