Judge awards ₦100m damages to Uzoma Okere

Justice Opeyemi Oke of the Lagos High Court sitting in Igbosere has awarded ₦100 million in damages to Uzoma Okere who was assaulted by four officers of the Nigerian Navy on November 3, 2008.

Ms. Okere sued Rear-Admiral Harry Arogundade, the four naval ratings in his convoy whom she said beat and stripped her on the stated date, when she refused to leave the road for the convoy.

As part of the judgement, the court also asked the respondents to write a letter of apology to the claimants, which must be published in at least four newspapers within one month of the judgement.

Wow, fantastic news. You really can get justice in Nigeria if you try. But come o, who will give Uzoma the N100 million? The officers that beat her up, the officer that sent them, or the Nigerian Navy?

It's a great start. She'll probably not get the money, but i like the message this is sending out to those crazy officers. They can't get away with everything. It would have been sweeter if they lost their jobs too, but i guess we have to start from somewhere.

I'm glad she got the justice she deserved

The same thing happened to me Abroad. The White police men came beat me to pulp.
Unfortunately i had no eye witness to it. But thank God for his mercies for giving me the justice i deserved.

When that happened to me i considered it racist, but reading about Uzoma's case, i was so ashamed of my country. I didn'nt know whether to call my case a racist one or just plain human evil?

I guess ther's no REAL HOME afterall.

Hmmnn...100 million sha? (laughs). I'm sure the appeal court will reduce it to maybe 1million or even less....really 100million is a lot, i dopubt if Arogundade sef has got that much in his acct.

Its a good start sha, the victory is the main thing!

Congratulations. It is nice to see the legal system at work. A big part of our issue in Nigeria is a seemingly dysfunctional judiciary. When the judiciary works, it is nice.

The damages are significant enough to send the point home. Actually even if Ms. Okere should have a hard time collecting on her damages, her job is already done.

Her case will serve as a matter of principle and precedent in the country to say such an act is not tolerated and should NOT be tolerated. Excessive use of force by the goverment on its citizens is not tolerated and should not be tolerated. Use of force is also unwaranted when a citizen poses no danger and has done nothing to deserve to be beaten and stripped half naked in public.

Bravo. This is good for our psychic amd hopefully to send a message to those who think they can get away with such criminal acts because they were uniforms.

Cheers,
Uduak

am so happy i saw the video of the day the actually beat her. some one taped it and posted on some nigerian website and got people petitioning.. it was really awful they stripped her on the street and bit her up real bad.

Thank God she managed to escape n the lady that gave her cloth to cover up... but the sad thing is that this type of thing will still continue...
But thank God for this justice.

as for the enforcement of judgment some of us here fear will not be effective, i want to clearly state here that non payment of that sum can amount to a committal to prison, because it is contempt of court.

1) Good judgment and I applaud the judge.

2) The Nigerian government will continue to use excessive force on its citizens cuz they don't give a sh*t.

3) This girl will not get any dime of the money. Who's going to pay? The military?

4) If the girl gets paid, be prepared for plenty Naijas who will start to press ridiculous charges upon charges of excessive force. You know as Naijas, we like follow follow. haha!!

5) @ Anonymous 9:37. haha! Girl no dey even smile self. Na fight?

6) I have to disagree with Uduak, cuz Naija leaders don't give a crap about the law. And the military & police will continue to harass peeps without any real consequences. The Naija gov't is f**ked up like that cuz they have no shame.
