Military confirms trial of soldiers that revolted in Borno state

The military has confirmed the trial of soldiers who allegedly opened fire at a car carrying the former Commanding Officer of the 7 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General Ahmadu Mohammed in May 2014. (Read here)

A spokesman for the military, Colonel Nwanchukwu Onyema, who spoke at the joint briefing of the National Information Centre did not give details of the charges against the soldiers on trial, he told journalists that details of their offences would be made public after investigations are completed. Continue...

Colonel Nwanchukwu also declined to speak on the number of soldiers involved, but reports say 18 soldiers involved in the alleged mutiny in Maiduguri, Borno State, are facing six-count charge of committing mutiny, criminal conspiracy to commit mutiny, attempted murder, disobedience to particular orders, insubordinate behaviour contrary to and punishable under the law, and false accusation.

In May, the Army had explained that “the incident occurred when the corpses of 4 soldiers who died in an ambush while returning from patrol duties in Chibok was being conveyed to the morgue”.

Meanwhile, the Co-ordinator of the National Information Centre, Mr Mike Omeri, says more arms and ammunition have been discovered in the forests linking Bauchi and Borno states.

i guess some of you don't know the gravity of offence they commited... Mutiny is a capital offence in any form of military institution... They took an oath and the service they render goes beyond money.

If I may ask, what do you mean by that?

I knew it will come to this. You can never do that kind of thing in the military and go free. But please they should look into what made them to act that way.

Mutiny ke? Those soldiers were nice to have killed their commandant. Military should try them with fairness.

In the Military, Mutiny for whatever reason is a great offence and can earn them a death sentence. They should have known better.

Issues like this are not taken lightly in developed countries.. Its either they don't get caught or they provide an evidence that proves why they carried out an attack. (after all there is no smoke without fire)..

We all seem to have short memories. Have we forgotten why these soldiers acted dat way? Their general asked dem to embark on a trip at an ungodly hour that caused some avoidable deaths. The general should also be invsetigated becos I beliv he is sympathetic to d Boko Boys! Having those young soldiers court-martialed will only serve as a morale killer to our gallant soldiers. ~ Blunt Truth

If these soldiers are tried, I call on naija youths to revolt. These fathers, brothers and sons put their lives at risk each day to fight terrorism and yet their commander puts them more at risk by setting them up to die. Nigeria there is God oo. Leave these soldiers be and face d corruption that brought on their actions

nde iberibe. The know what the are doing. The are doing this just to put confusion between them so that the will not focus on boko haram. Preciousezekiel@gmail.com

Discipline is the bed rock of the army opening fire on a commanding officer is punishable by death if they refused a commanding officers instruction dat is a different ball game but shooting at a major general is treasonable all dey would have done was lay down their arms down and take of their uniforms in military parlance it indicates protest these guys will face real jail term there is nothing the commander in chief can do an example must be showed if not one day they will shoot at the president

Go to maiduguri and see what those soldiers are passing through, after fighting hard with their life on the line one idiot commander will now give them a useless order that will lead them straight to into ambush and have them killed and you expect them to be happy right.

Would it be wrong of the Army to find a solution to why there was a mutiny rather than using these hungry soldiers as scapegoats? If they are well paid and paid on time, if they are well equipped with the right weapons all these will not happen. If they die in active service, their family will be at the mercy of hunger before they pay their gratuity. No insurance to cover them and one general dey one yeye corner the commandeer everything to I'm self and family. I'm tired of a country where nobody is held accountable and the poor will take all the pains.
