Lagos residents spend N1b monthly for merriment & entertainment

You know what they say, aint no party like a Lagos party. And we are really spending the dough, to the tune of N1billion every month, according to the Lagos State government.

Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr. Ademorin Kuye said made this known yesterday. He said:
“Over N1billion is spent monthly in Lagos state on entertainment and parties, we have the records to confirm this and these people, how many of them pay tax? The money goes into drinks, wine, food, aso-ebi and all of that and when they spend all of this money; they do not want to pay anything to the government”
"This justified the reason why local Governments demand that anyone organising events in the state must pay the Merriment Tax.”
“There is merriment tax in that constitution, its part of the rate Local Governments can collect. We have not fully utilised the benefit of the entertainment industry in this state”.
So basically, the state government is considering the introduction of merriment/party tax? How is that even going to work? Please share your thoughts on this...

They r not just sick.fasola or whoever is responsible for this, is sick in the head. Is Tinubu Mr Ojuyobo not the biggest party planner? If Tinubu will also pay this absurd tax then we will all pay. How much tax have they collected from Tinubu n his family?

Anonymous said...

The chairman must be sick upstairs. What have they been doing with other taxes collected? Are the drinks and food used in those parties not taxed? He's only looking for avenue to steal more money.

Abinibi said...

Someone needs to let the Lagos state govt know that drinks, food and entertainment is already taxed at point of purchase. This new idea of their cud very well turn into a monster for Lagos residents. Imagine u're planning a wedding or funeral now and have to pay and extra 100k cos Fash cant get his greedy thots away from the money u're spending.

Anonymous said...

O please! In Lagos there's tax when you eat in restaurants and I'm sure tax is worked into alcohol prices everywhere. To get into a beach you pay gate fee THEN parking fee. We already pay toll to go to Lekki, what the hell do they want? The should go and sit down jo. And when they talk about this 1 billion are they counting money actually spent? Because we know how people owe clubs money. In countries where they actually enforce tax payment you can see that they have good social services - affordable to free health care, good roads, free primary and secondary education in good public schools. The fuel subsidy that the petroleum minister said was going to solve every problem from good roads to ante-natal care, we haven't seen the results of. Take multiple seats please.

My dear Linda, even though I do not like partying, I still cannot understand why people should be taxed for spending their money to enjoy themselves. I think Lagos state government has run out of ideas on how to generate income for the state. I hope one day people will not be taxed for blinking with their own eyes or yawning with their own mouth in public.
I guess the government should be deliberating on issues such as security, how to make the state safe for all, and provision of constant electricity instead of this talk about merriment tax.

Incomplete information Linda. The Merriment Tax is not imposed by Fashola, its only listed as one of the rates due for collection by Local Govts in the state and not the State Govt. By the way, its not a new Rate, it has always been in existence and only a few LGs impose it. Don't forget that there's also TV and Radio Tax. If you ask me, some people go to the extreme to block roads during their parties/celebration, despite Govt outlawing such practices. Thus, it gave rise to the business of Event Centres in Lagos and u have to cough out huge amount to access such Centres for ur occassions. If you have any complains about Taxes, channel your grieviances to the FG, they are the ones who constituted the tax laws anyways.

Interesting idea. And it's even very workable, sef. It's an industry in Nija and it should be exploited by government. Why not? In Dubai it's called alcohol tax = 30%. What it means it that drinking is not allowed here, but if you must drink, pay through your nose. Voila! Lagos state govt should charge through the venues. And then make the event organisers pay more tax. It trickles down to the masses. It helps to curb excesses. And that's always a good thing. :)
