I've got type 2 diabetes which means the insulin in my body is not breaking down the sugar in my system quick enough. It can be diet controlled however in pregnancy and other circumstances medical intervention may be required to control it.
Am rilly interested in dis topic, number of people ℓ knw hv died of dis sickness n rite now ma own mum is a victim... Pls waitin 4 comments †̥☺ role in.
Diabetes is a slow killer, it has to do with sugar (glucose) and most of the food we eat in Nigeria breaks down to glucose and to crown it all.. People drinks alcohol like they can't do without it but believe most of them are digging up there own grave.. I doubt if most heavy drinkers read the content of what they are drinking, majority of all beers have a higher percentage of glucose in it. And what is killing Nigerians with diabetes most is they run to private hospitals for treatment of diabetes and they end up wasting lot of money.. It has no cure but can be properly managed, diabetes na rich man sickness ooooooo, if person no get money na death be that oooooo... Watch what you eat!!!
This deadly disease shud b avoided at all costs. We must take very gud care of our health.
We have 2 types... Diabetes mellitus and diabetes inspidus. First is your body not able to absorb water, and the second is inability for your body to absorb sugar. Both pile up in your body and cause you big issues. Visit your doctor if u want to knw more, hw much una dey pay me.
Thanks for this bit of information Linda Ikeji. God bless you. Happy New Month to my friends, enemies and the good hearted people on this blog.
I'm far away but this blog makes me feel like I'm in Nigeria.
Bless you all.
Olodo Linda, u mean 4 us all, abi u don't want d blessing of march ni?
Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas to control blood sugar. Diabetes can be caused by too little insulin, resistance to insulin, or both.
There are three major TYPES of diabetes:
Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in childhood. Many patients are diagnosed when they are older than age 20. In this disease, the body makes little or no insulin. Daily injections of insulin are needed. The exact cause is unknown. Genetics, viruses, and autoimmune problems may play a role.
Type 2 diabetes is far more common than type 1. It makes up most of diabetes cases. It usually occurs in adulthood, but young people are increasingly being diagnosed with this disease. The pancreas does not make enough insulin to keep blood glucose levels normal, often because the body does not respond well to insulin. Many people with type 2 diabetes do not know they have it, although it is a serious condition. Type 2 diabetes is becoming more common due to increasing obesity and failure to exercise.
Gestational diabetes is high blood glucose that develops at any time during pregnancy in a woman who does not have diabetes. Women who have gestational diabetes are at high risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease later in life.
There are many RISK FACTOR for type 2 diabetes, including:
Age over 45 years
A parent, brother, or sister with diabetes
Gestational diabetes or delivering a baby weighing more than 9 pounds
Heart disease
High blood cholesterol level
Obesity
Not getting enough exercise
Polycystic ovary disease (in women)
Previous impaired glucose tolerance
Some ethnic groups (particularly Africans, African Americans, Native Americans, Asians, Pacific Islanders, and Hispanic Americans,)
SYMPTOMS:High blood levels of glucose can cause several problems, including:
Blurry vision
Excessive thirst
Fatigue
Frequent urination
Hunger
Weight loss
However, because type 2 diabetes develops slowly, some people with high blood sugar experience no symptoms at all.
Symptoms of type 1 diabetes:
Fatigue
Increased thirst
Increased urination
Nausea
Vomiting
Weight loss in spite of increased appetite
Patients with type 1 diabetes usually develop symptoms over a short period of time. The condition isoften diagnosed in an emergency setting.
Symptoms of type 2 diabetes:
Blurred vision
Fatigue
Increased appetite
Increased thirst
Increased urination
TESTS and TREATMENT: A urine analysis may be used to look for glucose and ketones from the breakdown of fat. However, a urine test alone does not diagnose diabetes.
The following blood tests are used to diagnose; Hemoglobin A1c test, Oral glucose tolerance test and Random (non-fasting) blood glucose level
The immediate goals are to treat diabetic ketoacidosis and high blood glucose levels. Because type 1 diabetes can start suddenly and have severe symptoms, people who are newly diagnosed may need to go to the hospital.
The long-term goals of treatment are to:
Prolong life
Reduce symptoms
Prevent diabetes-related complications such as blindness, heart disease, kidney failure, and amputation of limbs
These goals are accomplished through:
Blood pressure and cholesterol control
Careful self testing of blood glucose levels
Education
Exercise
Foot care
Meal planning and weight control
Medication or insulin use
There is no cure for diabetes. Treatment involves medicines, diet, and exercise to control blood sugar and prevent symptoms. Source- NY Time Health Guild

Actually sugar doesn't cause diabetes but excess glucose does which is a product of carbonhydrate. Sugar when taken breaks down to sucrose but Carbon hydrates breaks down to glucose and too much of this is dangerouse.
Sugar on its own becomes dangerous to anyone who has diabetes. It is a common problem in Nigeria because 90% of Nigerian foods are carbonhydrate and many do not take time to burn this excess glucose as many Nigerians do not exercise.
Thank you Anon 2:20
Linda please encourage your readers to give up coke, fanta and the rest. Also cut down on carbohydrates (yam, rice, garri etc)
That is a very useful starting point.
I have the following symptoms - Blurry vision
Excessive thirst
Fatigue
Frequent urination
Hunger
But I am not losing weight. Instead, I'm gaining a lotta weight. Can I still be having diabetic symptoms?! I am very afraid! Someone should reply me please!

Thank you. Been trying 2get my hubby to exercise o despite all d gym equipment at home.
Do not forget that the avg Nigerian diet consist majorly of carbs as u mention above including white bread, cassava, cocoyam and all sort. Lots of people can't afford the luxury of fruits. An apple a day dey say keeps doctors away, but when apples are imported how many can afford. Let us try to eat at least a green aday, even if its cucumbers or garden eggs, leafy veges, exercise more, drink more water and less of all these alcoholic beverages. If possible mix lemon or lime 1nce daily with drinkng water, I do it and it helps a lot

JOBLESS my dear if u have enemies you made them yourself...and only recently. I am in my 50s and diabetic. Each day is a gift. That's why I am appalled by most of your comments. Why do you call people haters when they r only paying u back in ur own coin? I know that the fundamental features of an African (or at least have since u r biracial) can be found in you. Qualities like respect temperence and humility. You once said you will "blow" better than Davido. Guess what my dear, I believe that u and other young Nigerians can reach the top. But don't allow careless be the drawback. In this age of the internet words are never forgotten and so never forgiven. Don't be like Mel Gibson and others still apologizing for acidic comments. Don't allow your online behavior come to haunt u at the height of ur sucess. God bless u too this month

There is no disease that doesn't have a cure it is just a question of how informed one is concerning that disease as well as the discoveries made by committed personnel on the disease in question.
To say that a disease has no cure is very wrong information. Solutions exist but is yet to be discovered.
Back to the topic on ground; Diabetes - Diabetes is a complex group of diseases with a variety of causes. People with diabetes have high blood glucose, also called high blood sugar or hyperglycemia.
Diabetes is a disorder of metabolism—the way the body uses digested food for energy. The digestive tract breaks down carbohydrates—sugars and starches found in many foods—into glucose, a form of sugar that enters the bloodstream. With the help of the hormone insulin, cells throughout the body absorb glucose and use it for energy. Diabetes develops when the body doesn’t make enough insulin or is not able to use insulin effectively, or both.
Insulin is made in the pancreas, an organ located behind the stomach. The pancreas contains clusters of cells called islets. Beta cells within the islets make insulin and release it into the blood.
If beta cells don’t produce enough insulin, or the body doesn’t respond to the insulin that is present, glucose builds up in the blood instead of being absorbed by cells in the body, leading to prediabetes or diabetes. Prediabetes is a condition in which blood glucose levels or A1C levels—which reflect average blood glucose levels—are higher than normal but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. In diabetes, the body’s cells are starved of energy despite high blood glucose levels.
Over time, high blood glucose damages nerves and blood vessels, leading to complications such as heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, blindness, dental disease, and amputations. Other complications of diabetes may include increased susceptibility to other diseases, loss of mobility with aging, depression, and pregnancy problems. No one is certain what starts the processes that cause diabetes, but scientists believe genes and environmental factors interact to cause diabetes in most cases.
The two main types of diabetes are type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes. A third type, gestational diabetes, develops only during pregnancy. Other types of diabetes are caused by defects in specific genes, diseases of the pancreas, certain drugs or chemicals, infections, and other conditions. Some people show signs of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
very soon in chimexola.blogspot.com we will be talking about the alternatives to disease treatments using water therapy, oil therapy, vegetable juice, exercises, etc. So be on the look out and always check Priviledged Information blog *wink

When the body is unable to break down the sugar we consume from food and drinks, this lead to high blood sugar level and diabetes sets in which gradually damage organs in our body. Unfortunately, a lot of people might not know they have suffering form such a disease because it is silent killer. Studies have recognized 4 types which are the common type 1 and 2 diabetes, others are pre and gestational diabetes. It's affirm that it is cause by what we swallow in our body. Symptoms to watch out for are constant hunger and urination, sudden weightloss, blurry vision, feeling thirsty often, wounds are slow at healing, feeling tired always at a slight workout, and the likes.
Some of its early treatment and prevention is to avoid consumables that contains sugar. Food high in carbohydrates, avoid cooking with oil especially the one high in saturated fat like palm oil, and avoid alcohol absolutely for sufferers.
Early treatment can be done firstly by visiting a doctor at a general or teaching hospital for proper check up, proper dieting and exercise. There are herbs and medications as well as prescribe by the doctor.
So prevention is the best and one way to do that is through proper dieting. Visit this site to learn about healthy dieting with Nigeria foods-both free and paid. Discover the Secret to losing weight and burning tummy fat
Please visit the hospital to have proper test. There are different types of diabetes. Good luck

This is 21st century. Do not be ignorant. Infact refuse to be ignorant! It is not and will never ever be rich man disease. I know lots of poor people who are struggling with it.
Why don't you go visit your doctor? Will LIB readers examine you or take your blood for investigations? Mtschew
In type 2 diabetes, there is a term called insulin resistane: meaning the body is resistant to the action of insulin(an hormone that helps to increase glucose uptake into the cells for use) and these can be caused by many factors that are modifiable and non modifiable the most important one is presence of excess fat in the body. fat is needed for insulation and generation of heat by the body which is very essential to good health hence every organ has an amount of fat distributed to it but when the fat in the blood is too much its over distributed to these organs and cells, consequently blocking the receptors through which glucose is expected to be carried into the cell so glucose builds up hence causing problems. these excess fat can be controlled by a good diet and lifestlye modifications like controlled diet exercise and reduction in the consuption of alcohol(is a chemical that causes the deposition of fat under the skin that is why for some men that drink a lot they come up with pot belly) this large amount of fat puts a lot of pressure on the blood vessels and heart leading to cardiovascular diseases like hypertensionn myocardial infarction stroke and other big boys in the disease world. We are what we do and eat.

the endocrinology clinic (clinic for diabetes) is one of the clinics with the most patients both in and out patients; admission into the hospital as a result of complications of diabetes can be prevented through early and regular visit to the endocrinologist(make sure it is a specialist, a lot of general doc out there don't know what they are doing until it is late or too late)

Linda, i am quite impressed at your efforts at enlightening people and i really wish i could explain without a long story and lots of terminologies.
Diabetes itself means plenty urination(polyuria) and increased thirst(polydipsia). Diabetes could be Mellitus i.e related to insulin or Insipidus related to vasopressin.
The most common one is Diabetes Mellitus. Insulin is a hormone secreted in the pancreas by the beta cells of langerhans. Its secretion is stimulated by glucose in blood when we eat and hence it functions at driving glucose into cells and ensuring its usage in energy production and building up energy stores. As discussed by most recent studies by WHO, it can be classified into 4 based on its causes(Etiological)
1. Insulin Dependent Diabetes mellitus, popularly known as type 1, its know to be of juvenile onset appearing in childhood though few related cases of adult after immune stimulation has been recorded LADA. This form of DM has been related to genetics, chromosome 6 and is known to be aggravated by childhood diseases not well treated like measles, chicken pox, parotitis etc The body generate immune body T cells and B cells against this disease causing microbes but in the process generate autoimmune bodies against the insulin secreting cells in pancreas causing their death hence reduced insulin secretion.
2.NON INSULIN DEPENDENT DM: this is of adult onset thou children are been recorded to having it now. its the types most of our parents have. Its genetically related to changes in chromosome 11 and its aggravated by Obesity(most especially abdominal form of obesity). Life style has a lot to do with this, the food we eat, the drinks we take, lack of physical activities etc. What happens here is that due to excessive fat in our body, we develop resistance to insulin and then Tolerance to Glucose.
3. DM RELATED TO OTHER DISORDERS: This includes; DM associated with endocrinopathies like cushing disease, Addisons etc;genetic defects of Beta cells of pancreas, pathology of exocrine gland of pancreas, drug induced Diabetics e.g unregulated use of Beta-adrenoblockers
4.DM ASSOCIATED WITH PREGNANCY: Due to changes that occurs in woman during pregnancy, she develops resistance to insulin thou its slight in healthy pregnancy and in women who visits antenatal clinics. Hence not all pregnant women have DM thou they are a risk group during pregnancy and post delivery if not well taken care of.
Symptoms:
frequent urinations
Increased thirst
Increased Appetite
loss of weight over time
Dizziness
sleeping in day and restless at night, visual problem, itching of skin.
Treatment:
its best to Visit a doctor and not do self medication so i will not mention specific drugs.
In DM1: mild form we only regulate patient diet
In severe, we regulate diet and do insulin therapy.
In DM2:mild form-diet
Moderate:Diet+oral hypoglycemic drugs
Severe:Diet+oral hypoglycemic drugs+Insulin
Note that in Severe case of DM2, patient is regressing into type 1 clinical features.
Complications:
Acutes: Ketoacidotic coma, Hyperglycemic coma, Hypoglycemic coma and Lactacidemic coma.
Chronics: Angiopathies, Retinopathy,Cardiomyopaties, Ischemic Heart Disease, Diabetic Foot, Encephalopathy,Respiratory Diseases, Nephropathy etc.
Let us note that the reason this is being discussed is not to bring fears into our heart but to enlighten us about the disease and see reasons why we sure have healthy lifestyles(reduce that pot belly of yours) and when diagnosed of it, follow your treatments.

Please see a doctor and do the laboratory test to know the Diagnosis. Do not be scared, You still have type to change lifestyle. As to your question, Yes its possible its type2 DM as in early stages patient gain weight before a downward turn occurs.
did a project on this.
2 main types. Type 1 and Type 2
others: gestational(starts during pregnancy)
type 1: starts at childhood because the body dosent produce enough insulin.
type 2. Usually starts after 30-40 years because of the body's inability to respond to insulin
symptoms and signs
severe thirst and hunger (because the body cant utilise the food taken instead it uses body fat to generate energy)
loss of body weight, etc
it is better to control it early else, possibility of:
blindness, kidney failure, damage of neurons, leg gangrene; leading to amputation.
Generally if type 2, can be cured early else can lead to type 1: no cure, only control(except if you believe in God)
8 percent have it in the world
it can be linked with hypertension
my blood sugar read 8.1 which a doctor says makes me diabetic but after on week of diating and excercise,it fell to 6.6 which i gathered is about the normal range.i intend to keep on dieting and i am sure my next test would be more impressive. i consume plenty fruit and vegetable. i chew anyara with passion and i excercise. though i have a nagging fear of the future, i feel very great and really healthy. so,there is hope.i am 42 and my mother is diabetic.

Too much Starch(from most naija foods n beer) turns to excess sugar n the isulin can break it down all at once BUT 2GLASS CUP OF BITTER LEAF EXTRACT COMBINED WITH SCENT LEAF EXTRACT TWICE A WEEK WORKS MAGIC(it prevents diabetes,it reduces the sugar level drastically n both have many other health benefits) #27B41401 thank me later
Onyi pls like for how many mins do I have to boil the oha leaf before drinking, and I guess its only d water from d leaf I should consume?
How is Diabetes Mellitus the inability of the body to absorb water and diabetes insipidus the inability of the body to break down sugar?
All symptoms u listed are classic symptoms of diabetes mellitus. Go get ur blood glucose level checked out.
You can eat carbs, but stay away from them @ night, because your body's inactive and metabolism is automatically reduced from ΨЂA̶̲̥̅̊Ŧ it would be during the day when you're more active. The idea of barring diabetics from carbs is outdated!

Jaytee, see a doctor. I ignored those symptoms for years before I finally got diagnosed. Unfortunately, a lot of damage had been done and it is hard to reverse, if at all possible. It will be be managed for life with strict discipline.
Ode like you... It is called rich man disease because it not easy to maintain... Do you know anyone who's diabetic? Just ask how much he or she spend on medication... And some even loose part of their body to it.. You are the fool and ignorant one here so shut ur dirty mouth... You low life that hides behind a PC and feel you can talk to anyone how you feel....

Also known as diabetes mellitus, type 2 diabetes is a chronic health condition traditionally characterized by elevated levels of glucose in your blood, or simply high blood sugar. Type 1 diabetes – dubbed “juvenile onset diabetes” – is the relatively uncommon type, affecting only about one in 250 Americans. Occurring in individuals younger than age 20, it has no known cure.
