Women in the senate and a coalition of Nigerian women’s groups, including the Medical Women Association of Nigeria (MWAN), Women Rights Advancement and Pro-tection Alternative (WRAPA) and the Global Association of Women Attorneys (GAFA), are protesting the marriage of former Zamfara State governor and Senate Minority Whip, Senator Ahmed Sani Yerima to a 13-year old Egyptian girl.
They took their protest to the Senate, urging the Senate President, David Mark leadership of the Upper House to suspend him for marrying an underaged girl. They are also asking his constituents in Zamafara Central Senatorial District to recall him from the Senate.
Mma Wokocha, a gynaecologist and the national president of Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria, argued that the marriage will expose the child to vagino-vesicular fistula (VVF). This is a situation where, because the child’s pelvis is too narrow to give birth, pressure from the baby’s head blocks the circulation in the area between the bladder and the vagina, killing the tissue and creating a permanent hole in which urine constantly passes through the vagina.
GAFA representative, Mrs. Chinelo Iriele, said “Nigerian women are sad because the Child Right Acts, Section 21 prohibits Child marriage.
“Section 22 prohibits betrothal of a child under the age of 13. Today one of our senators, Senator Yerima, who is a member of the highest law making body in the country, is committing the same offence that attracts the penalty of five years imprisonment or N500,000 fine or both."

Now I have to say I don't in anyway condon or endorse Yerima's action. His religion and culture does not prohibit him from MARRYING an underage girl, the ceremony took place in a mosque attended by religious leaders. This practise is quite common up north and is not looked at as ABSURD or CRUEL thanks to their cultural values.
Also the girl is not Nigerian and the child abuse act case could be broken around that fact.
The man is just a visible example of a deeply enshrined cultural practice.

I am not shocked by his actions, and i wonder why most of us are. These things happen a lot in northern Nigeria as we all are aware of. The majority of VVF vctims are in the North. Th only reason this is drawing much attention is because Yerima is a public figure. I hope the full weight of the law(which has not been put into effect before, though it exists), will prevail this time around and serve as deterrent to northern Nigerians.
Black Knight just cos something isn't illegal doesn't make it right! So what the girl is not Nigerian - she is a human being and has human rights - the right not be sold into sexual slavery and the right to childhood (she is a minor). I'm no lawyer, but just think about it.... What if that girl was you? Or your daughter? Would you be so open-minded?

No sh*t, I agree with you on the fact that she is a human being with rights but for Yerima to have married her means the union was endorsed by HER guardians, religious leaders and the society in which he/she lives. To follow your point through almost every man up north is a paedophile and should be slaughtered like a ram and since that can't happen a better strategem would be sensitizing the public over there of their ABSURD and currently ILLEGAL cultural practice. The law in Nigeria is antediluvian. And that is why a pervert and paedophile like Yerima will get away with anything. Our law says that he can marry an adolescent provided she is not under 13. I think that we should invoke the international treaties that Nigeria is signatory to in fighting this beast. Our law is terrible. And has anybody wondered about the conspicuous absence of Muslim women's group in the battle to liberate this poor girl from the phallic imprisonment of Pharoah Yerima?
