University of Ibadan VC explains how student died

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Prof. Isaac Adewole, has given an account of how an undergraduate of the school, Mayowa Alaran pictured above, died last Thursday which resulted in major protests in the school. Fellow students of the deceased had alleged that their colleague who slumped while watching a match, passed away due to negligence by staff of the school's medical center.

Speaking with newsmen in the school campus today May 13th, the Vice Chancellor debunked the students claims. What he said after the cut...

"He carried out his normal activities earlier on Wednesday, May 6, 2015. Very early in the day, he attended the Gymnastics practical with other students in his Department (7.00 – 9.00 a.m.). He later went to attend the Induction Programme organized for fresh students in his department. He attempted to participate in a football match between his Department of Health Education and Human Kinetics and the Department of Library and Archival Studies (LARIS) in the afternoon, but could not due to the fact that he did not train with his department’s team. He thereafter returned to the faculty to attend a GES class that held between 4.00 – 6.00p.m. It was from here that he later returned to Independence Hall to watch a football match between Barcelona and Bayern Munich relayed in the Junior Common Room, JCR. The match started at 7.45 pm that evening. A generator was used to supply electricity to the JCR due to power outage that evening. The generator was placed about 50 meters away from the JCR. The student sat in the front row and was facing a non-rotating standing fan in the JCR. At about 30 minutes into the football match, a student sitting next to him observed that he had slumped and was motionless. The concerned student promptly carried him out of the JCR for resuscitation with the assistance of some medical students around who gave him mouth-to-mouth resuscitation" he said.

I stl maintain that Mayowa's death was preventable, he probably wouldn't have died, assuming he was attended to on time

It's a freaking lie. This our VC is lying again, we will go on another protest ooo...this boy died while he was taken to the school clinic..the clinic was requesting for his clinic i.d before they would attend to him. They saw he wasn't giving in and they asked for his matric number before he died. That's why the schl went on protest Bcos of how the clinic handled the stuff and the dude was asthmatic though...someone is dying and they are busy asking for i.d card that was the reason for the protest. so inhumane...VC adewole is just painting the story so the world won't know the truth. that's unfair to the guy's memory

A VC telling what a single student did for a whole day in a university of thousands of students. Do they mount trackers and live cam on their students?

Unknown said...

We were all watching that ball with that gen very far from the common room. Fumes from the gen didn't kill him, the schl clinic killed him..RIP mayowa jawe..foolish VC lying with ur innocent name

CLINIC NEGLECT

Anonymous said...

Those old women in dat so called Jaja clinic can be so uncivilized a times and besides you folks of Katanga republic ought to know the ventilation condition of dat JCR n not keep a running generator nearby. The poor boy for just waka comot instead staying there watching some lame football match instead him sit down there dey inhale all the fumes. Too bad. RIP bro

Unknown said...

So he died as a result of the fumes (carbon monoxide) he inhaled from the standby generator set. Hummmmm.....so sad. Rest in peace Mayowa.

PLS whT did this man debunk? I'm confused. What happened when they took him to the clinic? That's the most vital bit. SMH! These reporters can't use their brains to ask questions.

Unknown said...

He was asthmatic..generator fumes didn't kill him...there were over 50 dudes in that room, he was the only one affected
