"2face's African Queen is my song"...Orlando Julius
Veteran musician Orlando Julius, one of the pioneers of Afro high life music in Nigeria recently spoke to Rebecca Akinkunle of Encomium about 'African Queen' controversy...
It's a long interview but I'll extract the part of where he says tuface's song is kinda his...
2face's song, African queen, we learnt that the tune is originally yours?
Orlando "Part of the melody pf my song called 'Igbeyin Adara' which was first recorded in 1960 in Ibadan. OJB Jezreel, a producer was working with my wife, Latoya Aduke. I was able to meet him. He had been close to us, he loved a lot of my music, being oldies, Nigerian music and Afro highlife. He used some of the music of Igbeyin Adara to produce African Queen for 2face. I don't even think 2face knows it, but it's true. If it's in America, with that happening, he will give the American artiste that has that music credit on the particular song"
Did OJB Jezreel take permission from you before using it?
Orlando "No, but after he used it, he confessed to me that he used it. He didnt lie. Even at that I like him, he's a nice boy, he didnt give me credit for it, though he didnt steal it. The same B flat that I used to write Igbeyin Adara and the same guitar used for the intro was used for African Queen"
How do you feel about it?
Orlando "I feel good about it, but the only thing is for the kids to acknowledge whatever beats they take from the music of elders. So that the world can know you got this from this. We are not calling lawyers to sue anyone. Maybe if 2face finds out, he will probably feel very bad..."
And wife speaks..."That's the song that gave 2face the big break..."
2face buys N37m house in Festac
2face has acquired a new house on 23 Road, Festac Town, Lagos, which insiders allege is the fourth property of the singing star. He moved into the house last month. before now, the singer lived in a popular hotel, Comfort suites. The management gave him a permanent suite for free which in turn increased patronage and popularity due to the caliber of visitors 2face received whenever he was in the country.
Aside the new duplex he just acquired, he also rented a five bedroom duplex for his brothers and PA. The green duplex is on 6th Avenue, close to Comfort Suites...

Nice update. Thanks
Where was this guy when "african queen" became a hit? Its been almost 7 abi 8 years. Why is he coming out now to say 2face stole his song? Did he take him that long to figure it out? How can u say someone should give credit to you bcos they started their song with the same note as u. Are u the only one allowed to start a song with B-flat abi na C-flat? When did people start owning musical notes? See trouble ooo! He has no claim whatsoever. Lawyer ko lawyer nii. If he did have any claim he would have called a lawyer ever since. Who wouldn't when your supposed stolen tune is making millions all over the world. I thought he was going to say something reasonable like 2face stole his entire melody or lyrics or something. Abegii!!! If so Justin Timberlake should have given credit to Nelly Furtado who should have given credit to Missy who should have given credit to Aaliyah because their songs all have the vibe of their producer, Timbaland....and their songs even sound similar oo. I'm even appalled that he's saying this. Waking up one morning and saying someone should give u credit, for what?? The wife also followed to ask for credit? I hear una. Wait for credit. If he's serious about what he's saying he needs to come up with hard facts to show his work was plagarized not this thing he's saying. If his work was plagarized, then he has a point if not, no be like that ooooo. Okay how will people feel if I say no one should start their post with "Where" bcos I started mine with it or no one should include the word "facts" in their post bcos I have it in my post...................English na my papa own?
Tuface bought ahouse for that amount...geez...do these guys really have that kinda money?????????
Damm!!!now i no i'm in the wrong profession.....is it just the house or with furniture....
men, i ve to wake up...
@akwa nwa, u are hilarious!!!
akwa nwa, geez... i just read your lecture and i totally agree with you... but whats your take on OJB, he kinda said OJB who produced the song admitted taking it from him.. thou personally....
was it not orlando julius who once claimed he was the real fatehr or afrobeat??
bout his wife Latoya..i used to listen to her on Rhythm 93.7 sometime ago.. she's got a great voice thou
Nice update. check out my blog www.notneverno.blogspot.com
You know Simon, its possible that he must have asked OJB "That 2face song, the socond verse starts with a b-flat like my own" or "You used the same guitar intro concept as u did mine." And OJB must have said "yes". That doesn't equate to stealing. Its common for producers and even other artistes to use certain similar concepts from different artistes and it is allowed. When they cross they line by stealing your lyrics, melody etc..you then have a right to raise an alarm. I ask u guys, what is 2face going to give him credit for now? That he did what or took what from him? Its not as if 2face remixed his song, then he would have given him credit as the original artiste( that is after taking permission from him to remix it) or its not as if Orlando himself created the genre 2face used, then 2face would have at least acklowledged that fact(which he really doesnt have to, but just out of respect). If u noticed Orlando said he's not asking 2face for any share or anything(before nko) but for him to just make reference to his song where 2face allegedly sought inspiration from. I was like,Is this guy serious. And to make matters worse Latoya is saying "And thats the song that made him famous" with open eyes and all seriousness. Now this is a clear case of trying to reap where u did not sow.If this thing has been paining u since, where where u when the song won all the awards in the world except the grammys. If this were true, I'm telling u we would have heard something before now. After all we all heard when the other plantation guys were accusing 2face of releasing the song on his own cos they did it together. Why didnt he join the queue? I just hope he's joking and this is just a publicity stunt for people to go and at least buy that actual song he's talking about.
Linda I love your site . I want to comment on the AFRICAN QUEEN saga. First of all for the all knowing akwa nma....Orlando never said that OJB stole anything. The song has been out for a while...Orlando has not been in Nigeria for a while but we heard the song. The press asked Orlando if his music had any impact on the young ones of todays scene . He responded with the similarities of his song Igbehin Adara with African Queen. By the way Orlando's Igbehin Adara was recorded in 1960. He never once claimed he owned A€frican Queen and was happy that OJB admitted to him that it was similar. And you mentioned something about AFROBEAT, it is no question that The Great One FELA is the Father of Afro Beat, there is not disputing that, but you should get your facts straight on the ORGIN of the music before you try to condem someone who has contributed immensley to Nigerian music as well as soul and funk. Please, browse Orlando and check out the facts, you should have some respect for ones talent, you may not like his music but he has many fans in Nigeria, Africa and around the world. He never has taken credit from anyone elses talent. In fact he loves what Tu Face, OJB, Asha and the rest are doing and wants them to go even higher! Yes I said that African Queen is the song that gave Tu Face the push he needed, he did a great job with the song and has many other songs that we all love. I hope that you understand that the press has a way of putting things out to make thier own money. Research before you try to condem someone! If you search the web for Orlando Julius Ekemode you will find the song listen to it and then judge someone. Thank you Linda for this forum, you seem to be a Beautiful ,talented and intelligent Diva! Keep up the good work. Latoya Aduke
