American locked up for a few minutes in Lagos court waiting cell for using her phone

An American woman, Megan Chapman (pictured above) who is the Co-Executive Director, Justice Empowerment Initiative, was locked up in the waiting cell of the Federal High court in Lagos this morning May 6th for using her phone during a court session. Megan, who was in court for a fundamental rights suit her group filed against the Ojora of Lagos, Chief Abdul Fatai Aromire, started using her phone while Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia was reviewing the case brought before her.

This apparently is not allowed in court and was noticed by the presiding judge who immediately registered her displeasure and ordered that Megan be escorted out of the court room and remanded in the court waiting cell. She was held up for 20 minutes in the court cell and later released after much plea from lawyers and judicial workers. Narrating what happened to LIB, Megan said...continue...

“The incident happened at about 9am. I didn't know the rules of the court so I was replying an urgent message. It was not like I wanted to disrespect the court. The incident today only made me know the rules of the Nigerian law court. I was later invited by the Judge to her chambers and she accepted my apology. The prison officials were also nice” she said

She lied, before you enter the court, there's always a notice that indicates no noise area. If it were to be a Nigerian, they will keep him in jail for day's if not month's.

Of course it's the law, you can't even chew gum too or anything. No one is above the law and she knows that.

The requirement to turn off telephones is a standard rule in the courts and clearly pasted for all to see.

This is the type of typical arrogance usually exhibited by the average American. Would she have tried such nonsense in a court in US? Rubbish!

NaijaDeltaBabe said...

Oh ok

Anonymous said...

And this is news because?????? Because she is white? American? Like when is our slave mentality going to stop? This happens all the time! Even if she wasn't in court isnt it just plain rude? White American locked up for 20 mins, hold the press!! Front page news! Irritating!

Unknown said...

You have to switch off your phone(s) before the Judge/Magistrate sits in any Court in Nigeria otherwise it/they might be seized. Her case was not even that the phone rang, she had the audacity to answer the call in the court room. #gbese#. She was even lucky the Judge had to release her after so much plea.

Anonymous said...

Good! next time dont disrespect anyone by violating laws/rules you know is not acceptable anywhere in the world. you cant even have your phone on in the courts here in the states

Admire said...

U dnt kw d rules of nigeria count... If she was in her country's court, wil she answer a call? She shud hv stayed dia 4 a day dan afta dat, she will tell d story 2 her president. Rubbish

She was found in contempt of court and needed to be jailed. Nationality doesn't matter. If a Nigerian does the same in America, you will not see it in the news.

Unknown said...

That's the funny thing about Nigeria and rules of judge and courts. If you know you don't want phones in court collect it at the door so ppl know phones are not allowed at all in courts. Wonder if she would have told a notable political figure to be sent out like that. Bar phones from court rooms entirely, not that you will accept ppl to come in with phones and then cry wolf for using that phone. Phones are not allowed in courts in western countries, well..I'm sure of the UK

She is very stupid O! In Yankee do they use phone in court? They should have kept her longer!

Unknown said...

For only 20 mins???could a Nigerian here or abroad claim ignorance of such offense and be locked up for 20mins with the officials being nice to him as well?

Anonymous said...

Justice ajumogobia is a nuisance

Anonymous said...

That was an incredibly disrespectful thing she did. It shows that she has absolutely no regard for Nigerian court. She know damn well she can't try that in any courtroom in her country. How silly of her. This is how they disrespect us, and when they reach America, they'll start telling lies about the country. 20 mins was not enough. They should have given her more time.

Anonymous said...

But if it is in her country, they will treat you like shit! We need to stop glorifying these white people. Many of them do not respect us. I've sat in on a court session in her country before. You will think you were in the room with pure-bred monsters (plus judge and police). They are evil even to their own and especially to blacks and latinos. shitty people!

Anonymous said...

How sick of the anti white comments I am. Why don't all you BLACK people whom she was helping rot. Alone you can't get anything sorted. Look at the country a total lawless mess, and disrespectful that is hilarious, it is just a phone

Anonymous said...

Ode! As if she can try it iin front of a judge in america, black, white, yellow or red! Its more about the "superiority complex" for me than any colour rubbish

Unknown said...

If na black try am 4 US, oyo wl d r case bt here, we respect dem so much
