Battered BeatFM staff Adewunmi Oyekanmi releases official statement

My name is Adewunmi Oyekanmi, news editor with the Beat 99.9 Fm. 

An incident occurred at my work place within the early hours of the 8^th of Sep 2011 between myself and another member of staff which has been blown out of proportion in the media.

I have been wrongfully quoted in various blogs and magazines, but this will be my first official statement and the last, so please disregard anything you might have seen, heard or read.

The incident in question has been dealt with to my satisfaction by the Management of Megalectrics, operators of The Beat 99.9 Fm, in a swift and conclusive manner.
 

Beat 99.9FM Programmes Director, Olisa Adibua Batters Colleague

The incident, which some people are trying to cover up, occurred early Thursday morning, Sept 8, 2011.

Here's what happened - from an inside source. Olisa Adibua, who is the Programmes Director for Beat 99.9 Fm and Naija FM and an OAP on Beat 99.9 Fm (Morning Rush - every morning Monday - Friday), came back to the office from the industry night event which he attended, found Adewunmi Oyekanmi, who is the night news editor at Naija Fm, sleeping on the couch and attacked him.

The young university undergraduate decided to catch some rest after doing his duties as a night news editor. Prior to the incident he had been warned by Olisa not to sleep on the couch in the office, and on this fateful early morning, he decided to catch a few winks. According to Dewunmi, he was woken by a heavy object hitting his head.

Opening his eyes, he saw Olisa raining blows on him, kicking him and even smashed his phone on the ground, trampling it with his heel. Olisa also ripped his shirt off his body and kicked him off the premises of the office by 3am in the morning. Dewunmi was at the security post when members of staff resumed at dawn. 

And guess what Olisa's punishment was for the assault? Four weeks suspension. But then he was back hosting the Beat Fm Party which held just yesterday.

The Lady of Songs who died on June 30 2011, will be buried today at Awka, the Anambra state capital after a week-long of activities to honour her.

Her public lying in state held on Thursday September 8, 2011 at the National Theatre, Iganmu, Lagos and the commendation service held yesterday at the Archbishop Vinning Memorial Anglican Cathedral, GRA, Ikeja. 

Response to Sahara Reporters Story: WikiLeaks: Okonjo-Iweala Ferried $50 Million Jobs To Brother

Yesterday, Sahara Reporters put up a story on Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. Find it here. The minister has seen it and denies the story. She says it's a smear campaign and her office has released a response to the story. Read it below...

This reference to Dr Okonjo-Iweala in this story lacks substance and credibility. It is based on two sentences in the Wikileaks cable uttered by an unidentified person alleging that Dr Okonjo-Iweala “steered” contracts worth $50m contract to her brother for “consulting work” in 2004.

First, the minister has no brother called Jon-Jon, as the alleged “brother” is identified in the story.

 Second, no brother of the minister was awarded any such “consulting” contract for as alleged.

In an interview a few days ago, The Game said there were quite a number of gay men in hip hop and insisted that they come out of the closet. 

Gossip website TMZ picked up the story and accused The Game of being homophobic. The rapper said he isn't homophobic, that in fact he's had a few gay friends...including 50 Cent.

Nigerian Islamic court sentences two to amputation

An Islamic sharia court in Nigeria has sentenced two men to amputation at their right wrists for stealing a bull, with the amputation to be carried out in public if it is given final approval.

The sharia court in the village of Nassarawan Mailayi in the northern state of Zamfara on Thursday ordered that Auwalu Abubaka, 23, and Lawalli Musa, 22, have their right hands chopped off for stealing a bull worth 130,000 naira ($867, 628 euros).

For those who aren't familiar with her, Mama Nothing Spoil was a very popular character played by Mercy Oyebo and she had a partner - Papa Nothing Spoil - and what they did was basically give undiluted advice on everything from relationships, to finance and spiritual problems etc in a comical way. Their show aired for many years and Mercy Oyebo would make herself up to look like an elderly woman, but that's the real person in the pic on the right. Wonderful!

Another Family of Eight Wiped Out in Jos

Two weeks ago, a family of eight was killed in Jos. Last week, another family of eight murdered in cold blood...and believe it or not, same tragic event occured today; another family of eight wiped out in Jos.

The recent attack happened in the early hours of this morning when over 30 Fulani herdsmen dressed in black descended on Foron village in Barkinladi LGA and started killing people.

Russian Plane Crash Kills Lokomotiv Yaroslavl Ice Hockey Team

Rescuers seen at the crash site of Russian Yak-42 jet near the city of Yaroslavl, on the Volga River about 150 miles northeast of Moscow, Russia, Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2011.

Russia is in mourning after almost the entire team of a top ice hockey club, including several foreign stars, died in a plane crash that killed 43 people.

The medium-range Yak-42 aircraft crashed and burst into flames shortly after takeoff from an airport near Yaroslavl in western Russia at about 4pm local time yesterday Wednesday Sept 7. It was carrying the city's Lokomotiv ice hockey team to a match in Minsk, the capital of Belarus, scheduled for Thursday night.

Nigerian Women Among Victims of Gang Rape by Libyan Rebels in Refugee Camps

When the sun sets on the refugee camp for black Africans that has sprung up at the marina in this town six miles west of Tripoli, the women here brace for the worst.

The rebels who ring the camp suddenly open fire. Then they race into the camp, shouting "gabbour, gabbour" - Arabic for whore - and haul away young women, residents say.

"You should be here in the evening, when they come in firing their guns and taking people," one woman from Nigeria said Wednesday as she recounted the nightly raids on the camp. "They don't use condoms, they use whatever they can find," she said, pointing to a discarded plastic bag in a pile of trash. As she spoke, other women standing nearby nodded in agreement. 

Please these women need to come back home. Nigeria is not so bad that they'd rather be refugees in Libya than free souls in their country. #what'sthat?

Domestic Violence Awareness Walk: Titi Arowolo in Mind

 

Yesterday Sept 7, 2011, some men and women remembered all victims of domestic violence and especially late Titi Arowolo by walking in their honour in an awareness walk against domestic violence organized by Project Alert and a network of NGOs.

Two groups walked simultaneously yesterday: The Island group walked from Falomo roundabout through Awolowo Rd to City Mall, while the mainland group walked from Maryland to Mobolaji Bank Anthony to police college, Ikeja.

Domestic violence is not a private matter, it is a public issue, it is a crime. Let's talk more about it. And my blog is available to anyone who wants to share their story or expose their violent partners...

Lagos state shuts DSTV Office over unpaid N150 million tax

The Lagos State Government on Tuesday, shut down the head office of Multi Choice, Nigeria, owners of DSTV Cable Television over unremitted tax of about N150 million.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the office was shut down by officials of the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS), after the organisation failed to remit the money to the government.

WikiLeaks names ex-first lady, others as oil thieves

New United States Government cables published by whistleblower, WikiLeaks, have identified a former first lady (names withheld), unnamed highly placed Nigerians, senior military officers, Lebanese, Iranian, British and American businessmen as oil thieves. The cables claim that they all played active roles in the illegal bunkering business in the Niger Delta.

The cables also put the huge loss that the country sustained from illegal bunkering at about 91million barrels of oil per annum.
