A Nigerian born Councillor Kate Anolue is the new Mayor of the London Borough of Enfield in the United Kingdom. Councillor Anolue, who served as Deputy Mayor last year took over from Councillor Christiana During. Councillor Anolue represents Upper Edmonton Ward and was first elected to the Council in 2002.

Lagos state government issues quit notice to sacked doctors
Consequent upon your dismissal from the service of the Lagos State government with effect from May 4, 2012 and in accordance with the civil service rule 13115, no officer shall continue to occupy state government quarters after the date on which his resignation/ dismissal takes effect.
In view of the above, you are hereby requested to submit the keys to the quarters to the Secretary of Staff Housing Board.The doctors were given till the end of today to vacate their quarters but the Nigerian Medical Association, (NMA) said that the doctors were covered by the tenancy law and have instructed them to ignore the quit notice.

Remember that Beat FM staff that was assaulted by another Beat FM employee, Olisa Adibua, last year September? Well, eight months after that famous incident, the news editor has finally left the radio station. Adewunmi was fired yesterday after a misunderstanding with a Naija FM employee over something that went missing in the office. Naija FM, Beat FM and Classic FM are owned by same company. Abuja Bound Dana Plane Makes Emergency Landing in Lagos
The DG of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Dr Harold Demureno said there was no casualty and there was no damage to the aircraft.
A spokesperson for Dana Air said the aircraft had to initiate an emergency landing when the pilot discovered that it had “failure of hydraulic pressure”. Passengers were evacuated without incident.

Time Magazine shows mother breastfeeding her 3-year-old
The stay-at-home mom based in Los Angeles says her own mother breastfed her until she was 6 years old, and plans to breastfeed her children until they are same age. She told Time magazine she has given up trying to explain or reason with people who are against her methods.
I've given up reasoning with strangers who see me nursing my son and threaten 'to call social services on me or that it’s child molestation'. People have to realize this is biologically normal. The more people see it, the more it’ll become normal in our culture. That’s what I’m hoping. I want people to see it."We've seen it alright, but it doesn't look normal. Anyone agree with this method? Egypt denies entry to Nigerians
Sekinat Abiola, one of the 6 Nigerians that were recently refused entry into Egypt and were forced to return via the Ethiopian airline that airlifted them, said she was granted a valid 3-month-visa at the Egyptian embassy in Lagos, but intended to stay for two week since her business would only last that long.
"I was asked what I was here for and I said business, then the officer asked for my BTA (Basic Travel Allowance), which was $3000, and I showed him," she said. "Then he looked at my visa and said 'Lagos Nigeria, No, No, No', and asked me to go to the left were I met other Nigerians who were told the same thing.

Omawumi in Kenya for Mortein Malaria Prevention Campaign
Nigerian singer and former Idol West Africa finalist, Omawunmi, arrived Nairobi, Kenya on Wednesday 2, May 2012 in continuation of Mortein Malaria Prevention Campaign which commenced in Nigeria days ahead of the recently commemorated World Malaria Day. The Kenya tour, an initiative of Reckitt Benckiser, makers of Mortein, began from Pumwani Maternal hospital in Nairobi on Thursday 3, May 2012 saw Omawunmi take the malaria prevention campaign to different hospitals dedicated to the care of women and children using the newly produced song to communicate the message.
This follows the launch of the campaign in Lagos, Nigeria with a visit to the Lagos State Deputy Governor, Mrs. Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire and the presentation of gift to the first baby born on the World Malaria Day by the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris.
Nigerian Man who was sentenced to death at 16 regains freedom
Through it all Patrick maintained his innocence, telling anyone who cared to listen that he didn't commit the crime. Fortunately for him in 2008, Amnesty international heard about his case and embarked on a campaign to help him regain his freedom. They called his trial unfair and campaigned for his immediate and unconditional release.
After four years, the campaigned has finally paid off. Patrick was released unconditionally from prison on April 30th 2012, after spending the last 15 years of his life there. He's now 31.
Unfortunately Patrick is just one of many prisoners in Nigeria who did not get a fair trial or have been in prison for years awaiting trial. Y'all remember Blessing Effiom? I went to see her at Kirikiri prison a while back and what I saw and heard broke my heart. Some of us are trying to get her out. Will update you guys when we have good news! Sad!
