Aluu 4: Mob overwhelmed police team - Accused

A former police sergeant facing murder charge over the killing of four University of Port Harcourt students told a High Court that the mob overwhelmed a police team sent to rescue the students. The accused, Lucky Orji, was charged along with 11 other persons in connection with the killing in Aluu Village in October 2012. Some other suspects are still at large.

Orji told the court today Thursday April 10th that the police patrol team, of which he was a member, could not rescue the students because it was overwhelmed by the mob numbering about 3,000.

Mr. Orji, the 2nd accused person, added that the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, in charge of the area had ordered the team to pull out of the scene of the incident. Continue...

Led in evidence by his counsel, Uchechukwu Oputa, Mr. Orji said that the DPO’s order came on the heels of a distress call by the team’s commander to the DPO.
According to Mr. Orji, the commander had told the DPO that “the team was facing mob of over 3000.”

Apparently contradicting himself, Mr. Orji also said that the police had rescued the students and took them to the police patrol vehicle, but did not tell the court what happened thereafter.
The prosecution had alleged that the accused person took part in the murder of the four students instead of protecting them in line with his constitutional duty.

The prosecution, led by Rufus Godwins, the Rivers Solicitor-General, said that Mr. Orji had used the butt of his AK47 assault rifle to hit one of the victims.

Mr. Godwins had made an oral application to the court for the video footage of the scene of the crime to be played to prove his point.

The video footage was played and Mr. Orji was captured in the footage hitting one of the victims with the butt of his AK47 rifle, but he denied that he was the very policeman in the footage.

Mr. Orji said he made two statements to the police on October 8, 2012, and October 14, 2012; but claimed that he made that of October 14, 2012, under duress.

According to him, an inspector had slapped him, while forcing him to sign a statement he alleged was written by Raphael Ezechi, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, DSP, and prosecution witness (PW1)
He also claimed that the police team was attacked by the mob, but on cross examination by the prosecution, he denied that the mob attacked the police.

The prosecution said it had proved that the two statements made by Mr. Orji were made voluntarily and urged the court to admit them in evidence and mark them as exhibits.

The trial judge, Ledan Nyordee, adjourned the matter to May 5 and May 22, 2014, for ruling in the trial within trial and continuation of the case.

Thumbs up linda, you hv been following this case bumper to fender,am so sure that wherever tekena, lyold and others are now they appreciate your effort....For youths destinies were cut short infront of his mom,it is only fair to pay the iron price.... Can't even wish for my enemy to die the way those boys did, it was effing gruesome but what was more gruesome is the "government's silence"!!!#Cheezyjayne

Bloody bastards. Next in line are the fools that killed that woman they alleged stole pepper. Cursed be the ground beneath those who joined hands to kill these boys. Even those who folded their arms and watched. Cos if the crowd who watched had rescued them, those boys will still be alive today. Bastards.

The souls of the four young men will forever hunt each and every person that took part in their death. The perpetrators and their descendants will suffer the same fate in Jesus name

Future of the nation indeed! What!?! Are u kidding me right now?? If u don't have anything to day, shut up and read comments! How can dey rest in peace when their lives was snatched from them in a barbaric manner??? Well I hope their blood cry to God for vengance upon those who deserve it!

Why is this case taking so long? Is it because they were "ordinary" citizens? If ut could take the court just 2 weeks to conclude Sanusi's hearing why do these innocent boys' families need to wait for 2 years for judgement to be passed? Nigeria & its rotten judicial system. May God continue to comfort their families & granr their souls eternal rest

Stating that the boys should be allowed to rest in peace by not punishing the culprits that brutally murdered four young boys is wicked and a clear sign of illiteracy. This culprits should face the music of their crimes to avoid such a painful incident reoccurring again. People should be aware that there are consequences for such evil deeds against fellow human beings. Thank God for those fighting for justice.

oh!....and at the end, what happened?

Justice must be found for those boys. Let everyone who was involved in that inhumane act be punished justly by the law. RIP ALUU-4,
God Bless Nigeria. Amen.

Only God understands the pain and anger that overwhlems me whenever I remember this issue. If any of the family members of these boys should wake up one day and wipe out Aluu community from the face of the earth, and I happen to be the judge presiding over the case, I can't bet I will set him free and even give him money. This country sef! That's one video that broke me down nd I couldn't get myself to watch it beyond the point where someone hit one of the boys with block and put tyre on his neck and the boy wailed. Biko! Justice no go even reach.
