Awujale of Ijebuland enrols for Law at 78

78year-old Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, has made history as Nigeria's oldest monarch to enroll for a law degree while still on the throne.

On Saturday Feb 25th, the oba joined 201 other new Law students of the National Open University of Nigeria for their matriculation at Awa-Ijebu Study Centre.

Oba Adetona, who became the Awujale of Ijebuland in 1960, already has a degree in Accountancy in the UK.

Congratulations to the learned monarch, it takes knowing that you don't know to seek the courage to learn more and even more courage to enrol in the learning process. i hope my fellow Ibo brothers in Alaba, Balogun, Trade fair, Onitsha and Aba will emulate this great man.

Smart move!!! Unfortunately there is no defense or appeal before God. He thinks he can defend himself before God by getting a law degree before he zaps? I second @anonymous' comment. My brothers, its never too late to get a degree.

There should be age restriction for some things. He should be retired or something. Dunno what to do at that age other than go to school?? Too much time on his hands. Hope he doesn't start getting old ppl sickness before the end of his course.

The King doesn't want to die unfulfilled. It's a vindication for some of us trying to pursue and achieve what we strongly believe could have been achieved 10 years ago. It's about fulfillment. Very soon, we won't only say King Sikiru Adetona but also ensure we add LLB to it. "Kade pe lori, ki bata pe lese. Igba odun, odun kan ni o".

Alex Ekwueme went back to school for law after acquiring so many other degrees. The last time I checked, Ekwueme was an Igbo man.

There is nothing special that the Oba is doing that has not been done by so many others. The significance is that, it's never too late to acquire knowledge.

It's high time we stopped adding tribal sentiments into national discourse.

@ Anon 12:28, Yorubas are known for their academic achievements, igbos for business acumen and hausas for farming/cattle rearing. Naija is blessed and there is no use down playing the achievement of an entire ethnic group.

A monarch with a difference. I read his autobiography and was so impressed with his candour, honesty and industry. He is not a perfect man but he is one comfortable with who he is. All the best sir.

Anonymous 12:28 pm - highly unnecessary and it always amazes me that there are still people like you whose brain cells cannot function beyond the realms of tribalism. Maybe you need to go to school too. Moving on, this is great, but who's going to grade his papers and such? You know he has to get all As right? Dem no born you well to give Oba C oh!
