This division is seriously eating up the medical sector and very soon there will be a collapse. Why do we need to struggle for who is better than the other. Doctor, pharmacist, lab scientists, radiographers, etc, re all professionals in their own right. Why do other people in the medical field just assume that Doctor's re too proud, so much so dt they form an association just to fight Doctors, they have created enmity in the medical sector, but the irony is dt Doctors do not have anything against other professionals in the field but yet, they hate Doctors so much. If we could all do our work and stop fighting amongst ourselves, the patients will suffer less from incessant strikes. It is becos of the fight in the sector that a pharmacist will change the prescription of a doctor just to prove to the patient dt he is better. Anybody can make mistakes, a pharmacist, or a doctor. I wish we could stop d fight and comparison and just be wt we re n also respect d other person, Nigeria would be a better place for the medical sector.

A dangerous observation.... Why on earth would someone prescribe azithromicin or even worse ciprofloxacin for an URTI? Nigerians are in trouble, for real.

@Mams,most persons commenting on dis issue are health care professionals and we are been unfair to the public reading this comments. Dr's are trained w holistically in every aspect of medicine starting from anatomy, biochemistry, physiology, histology, lab medicine, pharmacology, paediatrics, obs and gyn, community health, family medicine, surg, medicine etc now Dr's are trained to understand the pathophysiology of diseases and pathology, disease presentation, symptoms and signs, clinical skills and diagnostic know how across all age groups and pregnant women.
The training is extensive let's call a spade a spade. So a Dr understands a disease process more than any other person in the health sector. After 6years of training, Dr's undergo another 6-8yrs of residency training to become experts, that's approximately 14yrs, pls let's be frank so many yrs have gone in. Yes pharmacist know about drugs but don't know disease processes and pathophysiology where the Dr is the guru. So when a Dr prescribes a drug he signs and can defend it, but a pharmacist can't do so. So the proper thing to do is discuss with the Dr if u have reservations about his prescription. Let's not misinform the public. The training is different. I'm an anaesthetist and intensivist,i deal with dangerous drugs, no pharmacist can change my prescription cos my drugs can't be found over the counter. Nigerians be guided, the difference is clear

@Roberts, i am a qualified pharmacist and I also have a fellowship(acquired) over 4years in addition to my 5year training, please don't pretend as if your colleagues don't make prescribing errors, part of the Pharmacist's duty is to crosscheck and reccomended, not 'change' doctors prescription, however, prescriptions can be substituted, for drugs in similar class. We also read physiology, anatomy, in addition with pharmacology(a lot of it) which will not just teach you straight on about a drug, but will still go through pathophysiology before talking about the mechanism of action of a drug. That is extensive pharmacology, so it's not just about knowing the name of a drug before dispensing. If a pharmacist does not understand the disease condition, and pathophysiology how do they come about synthesizing the drugs you Ue for your patient's?please pharmacy has many specialist alties, just like medicine and we are trained through all and then we decide on where to specialize post graduation, just like medicine. In this country we still have doctors who are specialists in internal medicine carryinh out surgery, or OBS n gyne acting as pediatricians, so there's a lot going on that has to be fixed.

In addition, many of us healthcare professionals that have travelled out of the country know the value of Pharmacists and how their interventions have saved lots of lives. But they come back to this country pretending not to notice at all because they think someone wants to "take over" their jobs. We have to be broad minded in this country or else the health sector will remain stagnant. I have seen cases where doctors have denied Pharmacists access to the patients during the pharmaceutical care rounds and this hampers growth in good practice and experience. While The doctors that work with the pharmacists always have good outcome. I think there is no harm in trying to practice teamwork

ANONYMOUS 10:54 WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY A SON OF TWO SPECIALIST CANNOT BE AN 'ORDINARY' PHOTOGRAPHER?

There are photographers in Nigeria making 3 times your pay. people like you are the reason only certain professions in Nigeria are studied at school, and other professions ignored.

Please GOOGLE IS YOUR FRIEND. see what photographers, graphic artists, writers, interior decorators etc are making and contributing to society in the west. Later they will say there is no job in Nigeria, when everyone want to be DR or banker.

please shut up well. NONSENSE

@ebonydoc WOW! You just showed yourself as ignorant! "Which Pharmacist is Better than a Doctor"
This is our countries problem... We like to stand behind degree or title to show our worth.. Chief this, Doctor that.
I feel sorry for the person who truly believes that their worth is in a title or a profession. Find Jesus! Let him save your life! Trust me it is much better!

@Anon 7:35AM You said "Hello Morons, It clearly says the pharmasist didn't know it was near fatal to asthmatic patients. Meaning, she was probably informed and prescribed it anyway. "
If you read what ACTUALLY happened, the medication ZITHROMAX is NOT fatal to asmathic patients. A simple google search can confirm that information.
That medication could have been prescribed by any Dr who knew his history OR by his 2 specialist doctor parents

Yes but NMA is so polluted to the extent of issuing licence to quacks and Collect money.many quacks dominate your profession.i can remember last yr in fed ministry of health Abuja ,a man was caught,he was neither a doctor but has license to practice for the past 10yrs ,not only that he headed an ebola team in fed ministry of health in the midst of qualified doctors.i can imagine how many soul d imposter have killed in his private hospital.my question is this- who issued him a license to practice as a doctor.your profession is so porous dt pple hv lost hope in you guys instead they travel to Western countries to seek for medical advice in minor ear infection.such porosity cannot be seen in pharmacy profession bcos we re men of honor ,the last hope for patient in medical setting. I lived in US and I can prove to you that a surgical registered nurse in US is better than 80% of our medical doctors in Nigeria. I don't want to mention further how a gynecologist prescription nearly abort my sister's in-law pregnancy.lesson every health professional has its own challenges be it doctor or pharmacist.pls stop these "I too knw attitude" it has killed our health sector, nobody has monopoly of knowledge, pharmacist need doctors and doctors need pharmacist and each has a role to play in health sector together they hv their own challenges. Here in US,every 10 minutes doctors calls me at intervals for drug therapy advice.everybody respect other person's profession,no discrimination abt who own the hospital, non doctors or pharmacist heads many Dept in hospitals here. be guided

A pharmacist is a multiple Bsc degree holder.
Onimisi Peter Benjamin, PharmD

It's a generally accepted and verifiable truth that the profession of Pharmacy is the most diversified clinical profession in the world and this diversity is encoded in the DNA of student-pharmacists during their training in the schools and colleges of Pharmacy world over.

The profession understands its divinely-ordained kingly responsibilities and undeniable relevance in the health sector and this can be attributed to why pharmacists aren't forged with braggadocious moulds; since as divinely ordained kings, we ought not and certainly don't go about announcing our royal heritage.

For the purpose of clarity, a typical pharmacist has a degree in each of the following quantifiable disciplines and many degrees in a vast number of undefined disciplines, little reason why we have never ever been stranded in the labour market and ultimately, would never ever ever be!

Some of the degrees in the kitty of a typical pharmacist upon graduation are but not limited to:
Diploma in Anatomy
Diploma in Physiology
Diploma in Biochemistry
Diploma in Pure&Applied Mathematics
Diploma in Botany/Plant Biology
Diploma in Animal Biology/Zoology
Diploma in Environmental Studies & Technology
Diploma in Engineering
Diploma in Jurisprudence & Legal Matters
Bsc in Microbiology & Biotechnology
Bsc in Clinical, Pure & Applied Pharmacology
Bsc in Management & Public Administration
Bsc in Pharmacognosy & Herbal Medicine
Bsc in Toxicology & Substance Abuse
Bsc in Computer Information Management
Bsc in pharmaceutics & Drug Design
Bsc in Public Health/Preventive Medicine
Bsc in Disease Control & Eradication
Bsc in Pharmacotherapy
Bsc in Bio statistics & Operational Data
Bsc in Food, Cosmetics & Consumables Certification & Control
Bsc in Logistics Management & Basic Accounting
Bsc in Medicinal Chemistry & Drug Research, Development & Quality Control
Bsc in Veterinary Medicine
Bpharm/PharmD
Etc

This goes to adequately inform the general public that whenever anybody introduces him/herself with the appellation of a pharmacist, they should know that there and then stands before them a professional with unquantifiably rich and varied experience in all affairs connected to human existence.

We are pharmacists; we don't just manage patients with well articulated medication policies and interventions, but we also manage the society and make it the most habitable place for mankind.

Always count it a rare privilege to be associated to a pharmacist and a divine blessing to be found in pharmacy circles for we are the only living authority in drugs, food, poisons, cosmetics and all other medications services

This has reflected high level of ignorance of the patient and critics. The reaction is due to your genetic make up.The drug is recommended by a medical doctor or pharmacy doctor is not the issue.A woman told me she reacted to a drug prescribed by a medical doctor. What about that?

I would have clapped for u for ur closing statements but d point was lost. Reading his caption without bias or complex he's right. Pharmacists are not doctors same way doctors are not pharmacists.
Maybe he portrayed it in a way to undermine pharmacist but that doesn't hide the truth. In a world where people know their rights n the legal system works perfectly the pharmacist in this scenario is gone for it. Everyone makes mistakes but when I make urs it becomes a great one. A doctor prescribes a drug n u don't have it, u refer d patient to the doctor for the drugs u have n maybe points why u feel u have a better drug and not overrule a doctor.
Doctors are not dragging they know drugs more than pharmacists if not pharmacists in pharmaceutical companies won't be writing on most drug packs "consult ur doctor" or do drug sales to doctors by educating them about drugs.
In every health sector in the world its a team work where doctor is the head of the team and other members help doctor to provide adequate care to the patients. Its not suppose to be a power tussle thing.
There are job descriptions. Pharmacists don't prescribe drugs and u know it. Laboratory scientist don't send for a test and u know it. A nurse can't wake up n give medications like that n u know it. So why d fight and insults all the time.
Know ur job description and the patient is always the primary focus. Thank you...

First thing I'd say to you is thatbif you were paid to tarnish the image of Pharmacists, the thunder that will strike you is still doing 1million push ups and when it strikes u, u would have no escape route but hell.

Secondly you could open ur oral orifice to say that Pharmacists are not doctors so they should not give drugs. And yuou could also disgrace itself by saying that u r the son of specialists doctors and to not know that before u take a drug u must know and inform the person giving u a drug dat u have allergies. What an Okpe/Dundi

Thirdly, who do you think Pharmacists r, dat is if u didn't go to a local chemist shop, the people to disperse drugs are d pharmacists and not even ur doctors, Itiboribo.
A pharmacist knows every hook and sickle of a drug.

So don't u ever come here to blab rubbish becos u would pay for it. Highly.
ODE!

To d person that said if ur car engine is faulty.. U dnt go to panel beater but mechanic.. How about going back to the manufacturers and producers of the engine. If they are close by.. U claim to know more about engines more than the producers of the engine.. Pharmacist produce d drugs. So if health sector can do witout them.. I guess doctors can use their urine to treat. Coming to the issue.. Is he sure he met a pharmacist or all dis sales men dat claim dey know all.. Have been to a pharmacy n d lady told me to take overdose. From her composure n everytin.. I knew she is just a sales girl who has been in d shop for long.. Thereby claiming miss know all.. If am a doc.. Wud have gone around crying wolf abt pharmacists..anyway doctors dat claim to know abt pharmacology more dan pharms.. Pls remove d pharma n replace with docology.
