I think the major reason people peddle lies is b/c information are kept away from the public domain and as such people resort to speculations. we should work on our information dissemination. A case in point is when an online news platform said a certain governor is worth a certain amount of Naira but the governor denied and threatened to sue them to court but the platform said the governor then tell everyone his worth if what they have said is incorrect.
