Nigeria's Consul General in SA warns against contact with corpses from South Africa

Nigeria’s Consul-General in Johannesburg, Ambassador Uche Ajulu-Okeke, has warned Nigerians back home to be cautious while handling bodies of their loved ones brought in from South Africa. Ajulu-Okeke gave the charge following the increasing number of deaths from Tuberculosis and HIV related diseases in South Africa. She gave the warning while speaking to a body of Nigerian professionals who were in her office on a visit.

She said that her worry is stemmed from the fact that the Nigerians are predisposed to touching the bodies of their loved ones during the funeral rites.
"I am telling the Federal government, any Nigerian that dies here, bury him because all of them are coming home with TB and HIV and our people do not have the capacity to deal with it"she said
Also speaking, the Secretary-General of the Nigerian Medical Forum in South Africa, Dr. Emeka Ugwu, said
“I am in the know that in South Africa one of the leading causes of death is tuberculosis and HIV/Aids. So it will not be far-fetched to deduce from this that some Nigerians who are dying here may also have that statistics. Care needs to be taken from the health perspective, any dead body or any of such things could have serious health implication on the community and it could be transferred from one person to the other. If a dead body moves from here to Nigeria, it needs to be properly handled according to stipulated World Health Organisation objectives.”he said

What has prayer got to do with commonsense in handling corpses in this matter. Naija and prayers. Commonsense seems to have gone out the window. Continue praying and touching ppl with tuberculosis rhn. Don't worry when you catch it. Pray. Dumbasses.

I swear I was thinking the same thing. What sort of rubbish advice is dat. Just adding fuel to the jib stigma. I work with HIV patients daily and I know you can't contract HIV simply by handling dem...not too particular about TB however so can't say. But common madam minister. You cannot contract hiv simply by handling the bodies. Wat a ridiculous advice. Mchew

Plz When deady body start to carry HIV!?.. I Thought when you're dead, the virus dies with u.. Abeg my biology teacher it's like u didn't teach me this subject very well..

Anonymous said...

It is not the HIV virus. The virus weakens the immune system that's all. It's the opportunistic diseases or TB that comes along if those living with the virus can contact that is to be avoided.
Magic Johnson is one celebrity living positively with the virus for many years. People still interact with him.

I taya o. It's ebola that has these issues even after death.

Anonymous said...

Me too. This woman is really high. Hahahahahahahahahah

Anonymous said...

Contact with the dead body is more of a transmission mode of the MRD tb. It's the severest form of tb with no known cure because of mutation of the bacteria over time to become high restance to the regular known tb therapy. Just so you know, your child hood BCG does not confer immunity to that infection and it is highly infectious with a high case mortality rate. Think about it like ebola so that our public health policies that worked to descalate ebola can be deployed in this situatuon

HIV/Aids, the virus that the whites allegedly created to wipe off the black race especially in places like US and SA where they wished to take control of. Pls check the statistics of the race mostly affected by this disease

Am ashamed of my country dt such ignorant duallard can held such post and some scientific terrible drs are listening to her without correcting her ma'am pls go and read abt HIV,Tb, their diagnosis, signs n symptoms, management, treatment n prognosis. The last time I check both ailment are not airborne disease, Tb have permanent cure of 3months regime, HIV has a lifetime mgt with the carrier living very healthy, If u must knw HIV is better than Diabetes cos in HIV u eat everything u want unlike in Hbp, Diabetes u r place on therapeutic meals. Shame on my country truly is a zoo animal kingdom
