Don’t bribe policemen, report them instead - IGP tells Nigerian

The new Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, says Nigerians should stop bribing policemen and instead report them if they ask for bribe. He made the statement today when asked during a press briefing in Abuja if bail in Nigeria was free or not...
"We have a zero tolerance for payment of money to free suspect. I am appealing to members of the public, not to corrupt my men; It takes two to tango. If they ask you for bribe and you refuse to give, and you have avenues where your grievances can be ventilated, I do not see any reason why you should give them bribe. The Commissioner of Police is there; the Area Commander is there; the DPO is there; and the technical platform (to report corrupt policemen) is there. We have opened ourselves to public accountability. So, you cannot now say the whole problem should be blamed on the police force’’ he said.

I laugh when i read stop corrupting my men like seriously!!! There is need for orientation and psychic evaluation before entrusting them wwit the safety of lives and property.
He should work on that first before sharing the blame. Noone wants to give freebies.

When you're traveling from Lagos to east and refuse to give them bribe if they ask for, they keep you there for hours and lay different allegations on you and you won't reach that day or you will reach late and simply give them 100naira which is better?

This man is clearly living in some kind of bubble or he's living in LaLa Land. Otherwise, he'd realize that his officers are thugs in uniform who harasses you until you give them what they want. If you refuse and they arrest and charge the public with bogus charges, will mr. IGP be there all the time to save the public. Please be realistic and stop sounding foolish. What IGP is saying makes no sense. He must first discipline his officers. Nigerian public will be happy if the police doesn't harass us all the time. No decent person leaves their home and set out to bribe.

And he said all this without dropping any number..not even the dpo or area commander...hehe how daft..

I'm reminded of a particular uncle of mine - he never gives police men bribe. What a principled man - he's been stopped a couple of time but has never given a bribe

Corruption will stop in police only when the DPO and Area commander stop sending brown envelope to the commissioner and when the commissioner stop sending brown envelope to the IGP

I love this guy already. Welcome development. This is what I keep saying. If we want nigeria to become a better place, then we have to abide strictly by the law. No more paying our way out of trouble

This is indeed a good one, Police men can now face their jobs....

Unknown said...

Oga, calm down. Report to who?

Pepboy said...

At least they will face the reason for them to put on that uniform.....nice one....good signs of change #GMB

Anonymous said...

I suggest the police IG should create a unit, staffed with officers of high integrity were such complaints can be channel to and also make a hotline available to members of the public.

Can you sir please provide any direct phone numbers to report cases?

Hotlines? Toll free lines? email?

if you do not provide channels to communicate bribery cases , how then do you enforce these wonderful tips you have so well outlined here?

As usual, its all hot air.

Bla bla bla .....

Unknown said...

"Na today"... Goood development if they can truly enforce all dis. Implementations goes a long way not all dis mouth talks.

Mamapapa said...

Ok. This means that hopefully, they will not wrongfully accuse someone who has refused to offer bribe and has instead decided to follow them to the police station BECAUSE when you get to the police station and another tale is told about you, no policeman, not even Arase will give your story the benefit of the doubt.

D-PinPionter Says: For the new IGP to say this, it means that he himself is corrupt and has nothing constructive to contribute to the Nigeran people in terms of changes to the police force. Who will want to give his or her hard earned money to the police under normal circumstances; and how do you tell an ill-trained man with a gun, no? This is the problem with Nigerians: They love running their months on things that are not practicable, instead of looking for honest ways to solve problems. Why not set up an undercover police force that would be patrolling the streets to arrest these thiefing officers, instead of pushing the responsibility to we the victims of police extortion.

Anonymous said...

Bros report them to who? HABA abi u be new person for area. i beat you report an officer they will arrest you and set you up for real.

Anonymous said...

I suggest the IGP should create a unit staffed with officers of high integrity specifically for such complaints and a hotline number and designated website should made available to members of the public to channels their reports back up with proofs. The unit should make sure the identity of the reporter is well protected.

Unknown said...

Aw many policemen do we want 2 report to. D entire police sector is corrupted. As 4 me I av a big issue with Ijegun, Isolo, police in lagos state. Dere DPO is aware of dere activity. Stopping motorists demanding #100 4rm dem.unless dey would let dem go

Anonymous said...

D-PinPionter Says: The very people you are asking the public to go and report their grieves to are the very ones that sent their men on the streets to extort. Is not as if high ranking officers is the criteria that for honesty and good conduct. Please shut up and earn your salary if you have no idea of how to restructure the NPF.

If they ask you for bribe and you refuse to give, and you have avenues where your grievances can be ventilated, I do not see any reason why you should give them bribe.

Pls tell them o! It is if one even lives to tell the story. Before you know it, they will fabricate a story and frame one up. I recollect the story of the man who refused to give them N10k, even when they found no fault and his vehicle's particulars were intact. They threatened to frame him up for robbery. The helpless man was forced to settle them. The police force can't be trusted at all. Even the so called bosses.

I didn't bother reading what the IG had to say, all I saw was the heading captioned. The Police have had seasons of lawlessness and recklessness! "Bail is free" every Police Station has that caption boldly displayed but I'd like one person here or anywhere else that will come and tell me he or she has had issues with the Police and was later set free without paying money for bail. The new style for a while has been to report a case and hope for immediate action but the Police will say, put your request on paper and give us two weeks to send it to Abuja for approval. Of course, they will demand for money to process the complaint. How can it even be logical to have all complaints from an entire country to Abuja? Certainly, some complaints require immediate attention but of course, the Police now has the prerogative to decide which case to take or not. Certain Police stations will refer you to another Police Station if the monetary value is not worthy. We are all aware and informed and unless you intend to make a mockery of yourself and institution, I'd advise you stay away from all social media. Kids are now even afraid of the Nigerian Police. It is absolutely sad the way it's being run so please, save your sermons and build a disciplined institution. You can come here when you're done.

How do we get to contact him when we have people to report, he should make a means of communication available. Even if it's not to him directly incase we are reporting a senior officer

Anonymous said...

Report the police officers to who, oga? You mean after they must have physically assaulted and charged the person with a bogus offense? I beg be real or get lost Mr. IGP. This man sound as if he doesn't know how his officers operates. All this talk is nothing but hot air. You are telling people to report, but you don't provide a number for them to call. He must have been drunk when he did that interview...If you really want to make a difference in your police department, Oga IGP, start by creating an Internal Affairs department which investigate police corruption and whatnot. And also create a designated line where the public can report an issue and have the Internal Affairs you created, investigate it. Otherwise, all this is just talk. And we all know talk is cheap. It won't hold water.

Very unintelligent statement. Not disappointed though!

So, if dem point gun at me say wetin i chop remain, wetin make i do?
If dem say make i produce the receipt for the empty poly bag wey dey my car, wetin make i do?
If dem say the letter "E" for my vehicle document too resemble number "3" and so i no fit go, wetin make i do?
If dem say dem just no trust my groomed beard because na only suspect dey get dat kind beard, wetin make i do?
If dem say 3 of my vehicle tires be michellin and the last one be pirelli and so dem suspect me, wetin make i do?
Instead make you streamline what can be demanded, make same public, make it legal to record (audio and video) your officers performing their "PUBLIC" duties, fix your officers, you wan fix the people
