So sad! Popular dancer Kemi Omotoyinbo dies during child birth

Popular dancer, choreographer and part actress Kemi Omotoyinbo has died. The beautiful lady who danced for several popular musicians including Pasuma, KWAM 1 and Shina Peters, died during childbirth in a private hospital in Lagos yesterday October 1st exactly 20 days after her wedding to husband Godwin Eloanyi, which was on September 13th.

According to her friends, Kemi was in and out of labour for several days in a private hospital and when she couldn't give birth the natural way, doctors said she would have to do a C&S. The doctors told her the operation would cost N450k and demanded an initial deposit of N300k before they do it.

According to Kemi's friends, the husband couldn't come up with the money immediately but begged the hospital to carry on with the operation that he would pay the next day (October 1st) but the hospital insisted on the deposit and refused to carry out the operation. Sadly, Kemi passed away last night.

How one of her friends told the story of what happened to Kemi
"Kemi wouldn’t have died if the doctors did pay attention to her. She was in labour for several days and was asked to pay certain amount of money before she could be operated upon. The truth is that Kemi was in labour for over one week. She tried in vain to give birth the normal way but the baby just didn’t come.
Eventually the doctor told her she would have to go through C&S. It was termed emergency C&S. The hospital told her husband that they would have to pay a sum of 450,000 for her to be operated upon. He also said that before anything could be done they would have to make a deposit of 300,000. The husband made several efforts to raise 300,000 but deposited all he had. He begged the doctors to please go ahead with the operation and would pay before the next day. That was on October 1st , the night she died."
"Kemi's husband said he would pay the money the next day but the doctor refused and stated categorically that he would not move an inch else he pays 300,000. It was at that point Kemi decided to forward messages to people she knows so she could get help. She got responses that money would be made available to her the next day. On hearing that the husband went to beg the doctors again, still they refused. No bank was opened and nothing could be done until Thursday October 2nd but unfortunately she gave up the ghost that night. My point is, the doctors knew she had to go through emergency C&S. they could have saved her life and get the money later.  Nigeria is a very bad country I must confess." one of her friends said
Truly sad! May her soul rest in peace...amen.

Dear Linda,

kindly state complete info. what is the name of the Hospital? very few hospitals in lagos take that much for a cs except she was in the high brow hospital, and you do not go to a high brow hospital if don't have to money.

what happened to instant transfer? those her friends should go n sit down jor do we not send money during weekends?
selfish self centred friends, now they are blaming the hospital.

my opinion

Not her soul resting In peace alone that hospital should be closed down his licence withdrawn he should have done the Surgery then detained them in the hospital til the pay

Dont blame the doctors first. start with the traditional place they took her to, how can you be in child labour for a whole week??? in uk when you go more than 10 hours, it becomes emergency C and S cause the baby and mother would have been too weak. why didn't he take her to General hospital??. of course the hospital knew her chance of survival was slim and the baby would have been dead. She was strong to have pull through a whole week, THEY WERE JUST SELFISH AND GREED TRYING TO MAKE MONEY OUT OF THE SITUATION (MENTION THE CLINIC NAME AND SHAME THEM).

i have always warn people using the traditional people and method of giving birth. i can remember the incidence of a friend who labor for 4 days, when we saw her i was like what the hell?? we raised 40,000 and took her to general hospital. They performed emergency CS for her. of course the baby was too weak from the labor, she died the second day but luckily the mother survived.

I'm not saying that Nigerian doctors shouldn't earn a decent living, but I'm sorry to say this, Nigerian doctors are part of the problem in the health sector. More than half of them do not even have a clue in the medical field, even the so called consultants at the teaching hospitals. Life is not paramount to them, which is the essence of their profession in the 1st place. Then to cap it, they are proud to tell the world that they are going on strike, the same way oil marketers do; God save us from this disease called Nigeria.

I want to say the doctors are evil and care little about saving lives than lining the pockets fat with cash but when you realize that it is a private hospital and that patient fee is what the establishment survives on then you might have to reconsider that train of thought. Especially if you reason that the hospital might have being in a situation like that before and the patient wasn't able to raise the money! Not excusing them for choosing money over life but there is always two sides to a story. The part we know is that of the deceased!

Dear LIB readers, my heart bleeds for this woman and of course for her bereaved family. I hold our corrupt leaders responsible for the death of this woman. The hospital and doctor should be prosecuted for negligence. If our leaders will resit the temptation of looting public treasury, may be every state in the country will have a well equipped state of the art hospital, where someone similarly situated will be saved before asking for payment. I remember when Dee Theo Danjuma boasted that he had $500 million that he did not know what to do with;yet this woman died b/c of her inability to pay approximately $1800 dollars. The so called Nigerians with private jets should bury their faces in shame. May her soul rest in perfect peace amen.

Nigeria govt should come up/have a law to save pregnant women from this kind of predicament. In US no hospital can reject care to pregnant woman, it is the law. And US govt helps to chip in for the bills, sometimes pays 100% of it. I am tired of reading this kind of news. I have lost so many friends in Nigeria in this trend of child bearing experience. No wonder everyone runs to US for delivery.

Toronto Finest said...

That doctor needs to be charged for manslaughter

Anonymous said...

Did they not have nine months to plan for child birth? Or the husband thinks childbirth is free? He should be held responsible for this avoidable loss and not the hospital. I am sure they spent more than 450k on their Wedding. Nigerians need to get their priorities right. May she rest in peace and may the husband pay dearly for this.

Anonymous said...

RIP to her....i don't think I will go that country Nigeria again bcoz they don't cherish human life. ....God bless America

Doctors all over the world are trained to save life, only in Nigeria Doctors will request money to be paid before any treatment is carried out, what a shame! if you walk into a hospital abroad in this kind of situation, your life will be saved before they will even get your details.
How is any of these doctors and hospitals better than the so called politicians we all CRITICIZE, no difference. heartless Doctors, not to a woman in that condition, I hope they never find them self in a situation that they have to beg for life.

If i was a doctor, I will be proud to save a life for nothing, rather than watch to see someone die, God help the mind and heart of Nigeria's
I hope all the doctors in that hospital are happy now.
May her Soul rest in Peace.
God bless and save Nigeria.

Ada Aba said...

Those billions our leaders carry up and down for illegal transactions and the ones they loot is enough to set up health care facilities for pregnant women. The mortality rate is too high. The govt can as well start from govt hospitals. I am so passionate about this topic of women dying during child birth. Our women leaders, please do something on this issue.

This is sad! Natal deaths by now ought to be a thing of the past in Nigeria of the right things are being done.
First, the Lagos State Govt should seal off this hospital and arrest the proprietors and medical staff that killed this lady.
Secondly, the govt (state or federal) should make child births free of charge in every hospital whether private or public. Every hospital must sign the undrertaking before being allowed to operate. Hospitals should tender claims periodically with verifiable envidence to.the govt for reimbursments accordingly. Whatever the govt might spend per annum will.not be worth more the lives that the scheme would saved.
Just my opinion shaa. May the dead rest in peace.

This is so sad...It still boils down to bad governance. If government hospitals worked well with standard facilities, people won't even need to go to a private hospital for child birth (amongst others)because private hospitals are usually very expensive while government hospitals are very affordable but sadly, very inefficient....So people who can afford good private hospitals or even abroad dont bother about government hospitals. Its very sad because as much as I'd want to blame the doctor badly, I must also say its people who dont keep to their words that make doctors so hard hearted...so many people would say anything until you treat their person (patient) and then they refuse to pay up...Nigerian Doctors and nurses really need to be more compassionate, a person's life is worth more than any amount of money#RIP kemi, it really hurts me whenever I hear a woman died during child birth#Very sad

A country where human lives are not valued. why didnt the stupid doctor carry out the C&S atleast to save her life first and then detain her if the money is not ready. SMH for the country.

Goes to show how heartless doctors who are meant to save lives are. May her death be on their heads. Wish Linda can reveal the name of the hospital.
May her gentle soul rest in perfect peace. Amen.

Sad indeed! I wonder what happened to the Hippocratic oath they took. Too bad everything in this country is centred on money! The man deserves to be slammed with a suit and his license revolked. What happen to professional pride? No wonder the saying "They are so poor, the only thing they have is money. I hope his wife gives him a big hug for this wonderful achievement. #Mediocrity.

This is why we need a good free government provided health care system. Things like this should not happen in this day. So so sad. Praying for her family. RIP

I think that hospital should be closed down and the family should sue them . Every Doctor pledge an oath to save life and that doctor hasn't done that . His license should be revoked .Alot of shit aint just working in that God forsaken country ..

So sad life means nothing to some doctors in Nigerian. This can not happen in european countries where a doctor will let someone die because of money, it really break my heart. Losing my sister to child birth too it has been years but it alway feels like yesterday l always think of her sometimes l feel like calling her like we alway do. I pray that God will be with the husband good friends and her family in this time of healing the process is long but with time it will be better

Cursed nation . Very wicked people indeed. How can this evil doctor allow a pregnant woman die like that. God will punish that doctor. May help never come to him at his time of need.

What's the name of the hospital? Linda please find out and publish it. People should not be allowed to do this to others. They could have charged her millions, saved her life and requested for payments afterwards. Hospitals should find a way of getting their money back even if it means involving the police; but they should have saved her life. This is absolutely horrible.
