Building under construction collapses in Victoria Island (Photos)

A building under construction at Muri Okunola street in Victoria Island just collapsed. Several people are believed to be trapped under it. The building is beside the Eti Osa Local Government building on the street. Not sure if a rescue operation is going on right now. More exclusive photos after cut...

Substandard building material tins, I pray no one dies.

This is definitely the fault of the architect. Probably the hv bn mising building material foR their own selfish use. I just hope no life is lost though odawise the shuld be dealt with mercilessly.

You want them to arrest the contractor that is also trapped imside the building probably dead too? Hmmm

I am shocked to hear this. I passed by this building on Friday. Interesting i shared my thoughts with my colleague today on how odd the construction was taking shape. These guys were creating floors with roofing sheets and casting blocks over them. That, was the first time i was coming across such a construction method. I hear is a former governor that owns the place. My prayers are with those trapped underneath the rubble. I share similar sentiments, the construction company should be prosecuted.

I was an eye witness

Anonymous said...

Witnessed the aftermath and it was such a sorry sight to behold! Most of the construction workers died just like that. As at when I watched all this, the contractor was still trapped inside. Too many dead bodies but rescuers really did their best. Took some very clear shots but don't really know how to send them to Linda. We all really need God more than ever before. RIP to the victims!

This is serious...it is becoming a a common event to find collapsed buildings this days, especially in Lagos

God help dem, they r ur children. It wud hv bn betta. If it where d owner n d site foreman dat were trapped..SMH

Unknown said...

Even the white completed building beside it will soon collapse because it was constructed the same way...none of the building had a single pillar. The building was been rushed by excess number of non-professional Engineers (cheap labour) in order to embezzle alot of money.SMH

Linda, are you scared to mention the fact that IRU-Victoria Island Local Govt. is connected to this building, the land where the building just collapsed belongs to IRU-Victoria Island. So is this a Government building? So who would prosecute the Government?

Apple said...

Hmmm, Nah wao, a big project like that?

Anonymous said...

Now who do we blame?d contractor who collects moni 4 50bags of cement nd ends up using 8bags......or d owner of d building who is bn told by d contractor dat 50bags wuld b used buh insist dat d Contractor uses 8bags all bcos he is an 'Ijebu man'......hehehehe.....(ROI)

I concur!

My office is near this site, and everytime I passed by, I always had this misgiving. The whole arrangement is so uncoordinated, and nobody seemed to be in charge. Also, I believe that a building that size should have some visible engineers and high-tech equipment around it. I never saw any. We just have to learn to take serious things seriously in this country.

Just a hint for you Linda. If you could do a bit of investigative journalism to reveal the real cause/s of the incessant building collapses in Lagos.... its easy to blame the cause on substandard materials but this would be more veritable with proof. Lets know if it is the cement or the metal rods or architectural flaw/s etc responsible for the structural failure.... A reasonable govt would have by now come out with a reason and acted to stem it; but instead they come to the scene and cry. This role on your part, LInda, would go a long way in preventing more chaos, hence more benefit to the public. Just hint for you...

Nigeria Clients are always looking for cheap particle, they have a problem paying for quality in terms of employing personal, price negotiations and building materials thus compromising the quality of work done and in turn a recipe for disaster.

All these corrupt contractors and supervisors, wey dey cut corners to get profit. The numbers of collapsed building in Lagos just too much.

Na wa!

All this boils down to corruption. ..the structural engineers knows exactly what they should do had it been they were properly educated. Our education system is very bad. I graduated as a computer scientist before I left for Uk but I never knew how to use a computer. ..shame. I've now enrolled in a university here and can see clearly why foreign countries dont accept our certificate. Structural engineers have a special software that can in constructing any type of building. The software can mearsure the strength, balance, size among other things. My university over is nowhere near the best schools here but when you are inside, you will think you are in heaven. The equipments alone in the lecture room is way beyond my imagination. The lecturer and students interaction is like a mother and Child relationship. Please let me stop here before I start crying for my beloved country Nigeria.

Hopefully you will come back home to help fix our issues.which is why I support the strike by asuu.its not just enough for the salaries to be upgraded, what about infrastructure and so on.we have universities that have laboratories but no equipments, libraries without up to date books, engineering and archi faculties without anything.you all cry that you want to graduate, graduate with what? A certificate that can't help you beyond this country.it won't even help you in this country because you are competing with kids who have gone to private schools or gone abroad for the same jobs.you ate disadvantaged by not being the child of so so person and then secondly by holding a document that isn't acceptable even in your own country.not everyone has an opportunity to travel,or blog or make a successful hit.you better all fight for your rights as citizens.

May God help us, Lagos state gov. do take over any colapsed building, and this is Local Gov. building. Who will then take over this one?

3 Engineers died inside the building and have of the Labourers also lost their life, it's indeed a pathetic sight.

It is very unfortunate the story. Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and his foot soldiers, how is it possible to take government property to build a shopping mall covering it with a BOT process. Its unfair!!!
Im sure this was awarded with a large amount and only a quarter of the budget will be used.
