Pastor Bans Hair Weaves in His Church

The senior pastor at Resurrecting Faith Church in Waco, Texas has advised his female congregation not to wear weaves to church. 39 year old Pastor A.J. Aamir said he grew wary of looking out over his congregation and seeing a sea of hair weaves. Pastor Aamir feels women wearing weaves presents a false image of themselves and are associated with women who have low self-esteem.
“Our black women are getting weaves trying to be something and someone they are not. Be real with yourself is all I’m saying,” Pastor A.J. Aamir told AmericaPreachers.com.
He said he “highly disapproves” of women wearing weave in his church, where the average age of the congregation is 22. Meaning most female members wear weaves.
“Long hair don’t care. What kind of mess is that? I don’t want my members so focused on what’s on their heads and not in their heads. I lead a church where our members are struggling financially. I mean really struggling. “Yet, a 26-year-old mother in my church has a $300 weave on her head. No. I will not be quiet about this.”
But why is a pastor concerning himself with a woman's hair? I thought it was more about what's in your heart and soul and not what's on your head? Anyway, I'm sure he’ll change his mind when tithes and offering decreases. Then he will be yelling 'All weaves aboard' Lol. #kidding. Your thoughts?

Being a pastor is not only about salvation but leadership. I think he has the responsibility to teach them to be financially responsible and not squander money. If they have enough money then they can do what they want, but since he said they are struggling then its ok to advice them. Linda he never said ban by the way, he just advised them not to wear it. please stop changing story

Then clearly you haven't heard of MFM or Deeper life. Some churches don't condone what they don't condone. I do weaves and make up but I like the fact that some churches have stood their ground firmly on what they don't accept even in our time when it seems like everything goes. As the saying goes. He who stands for nothing will fall for anything!

Linda, your comment just shows how shallow-minded you are. How can u say such a thing???!!!! You think the man will bend his rules bcoz of tithes??!! I honestly do not think so. Please try and be more reasonable with ur hogwash statements ok. And by the way, I aint a christian and I see a lot of point in what the Pastor says. You should see more sense than I do, being a Christian and not rush at making silly comments. You are loosing it Linda.

Anonymous said...

I believe Linda has a right to her opinion d same way u do, beside at first it sounded like he cared for his congregation but think about it truthfully if they are having financial problems no 1 would have to tell dem to stop buying weaves and for the fact that he actually found out the price of the weaves, it either his paying for it or his offering bags r light #justsaying. Cheers. BM

What are we talking about here,we need such pastors to straighten out society. We expect our African Pastors to outrightly talk in church about the burning issue of skin bleaching which is a hot potato..Pastors takeover and sensitize these skin burning women who are blinded by the beauty instinct.. God Save The Black Race

Well about the hair issue, I have always admired women with well groomed hair whether fake or real. So it's a personal thing and it's best if everyone is left alone to make that choice whether to fix or not to fix a weave. The evil in it is what some ladies have to do to acquire one ....or the false esteem they get when they can afford an expensive one, while others can't. But true, there's definitely something not Christ-like about buying 70,000 naira weaves while majority of the masses are living in poverty....or young people unable to even afford to buy a jamb form. Sooooo, PRIORITIZE.

LINDA,PLS DON'T MISLEAD PEOPLE WITH YOUR OPINION BECAUSE YOU'RE A ROLEMODEL TO SOME YOUTHS AND ABOUT THIS ISSUE OF HAIR WEAVING OR APPEARANCE,PLS CAN YOU TELL ME HOW YOU WOULD KNOW A VERY RIPE FRUIT FROM AN UNRIPE FRUIT? DO YOU HAVE TO HAVE TO SLICE THE ORANGE TO KNOW IF IT IS SPOILT OR NOT? PLS DON'T BRING UP THE ISSUE OF GOD LOOKS AT THE HEART BECAUSE WHETHER YOU WEAR RAIN/WINTER COAT OR BIKINI TO WORK OR ELSEWHERE,THE ALL-SEEING GOD SEES ALL THINGS. BUT PLS WEAR A SPAGHETTI TOP THAT REALLY SHOWS YOUR BREAST AND A MINISKIRT THAT SHOWS US THE SHAPE OF YOUR BUM AND TELL ME,"I WANNA EVANGELISE TO YOU" AND YOU THINK I'LL TAKE YOU SERIOUSLY. HOW DO YOU KNOW A SOLDIER? OF COURSE,IT'S BY HIS UNIFORM AND THE SAME ISSUE OF APPEARANCE MATTERS INCLUDING YOUR HAIR. NOW WHEN YOU BECOME A CHRISTIAN i.e.BORN AGAIN,THERE SHOULD BE A CHANGE IN YOUR INSIDE STARTING WITH PURIFICATION AND SANCTIFICATION OF YOUR HEART THAT WILL REFLECT OUTWARDLY,AFFECTING YOUR BEHAVIOUR,DRESSING ETC. THIS IS WHY THERE IS LITTLE OR NO DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CHRISTIANS AND UNBELIEVERS(PEOPLE WHO LIVE ACCORDING TO THEIR OWN RULES AND GIVING FLIMSY EXCUSES TO PLEASE THEMSELVES),INSTEAD OF PATTERNING THEIR LIFESTYLE ACCORDING TO JESUS CHRIST! HOW MANY OF US ARE MINDFUL OF HEAVEN AND RAPTURE. IF YOU ARE THEN YOU WON'T MIND INCONVENIENCING YOURSELF TO PLEASE GOD. THAT INCLUDES HAIRSTYLE,DON'T GO AFTER THINGS THAT WON'T LAST,I'M NOT SAYING DON'T MAKE YOUR HAIR BUT BACK TO THE STORY OF THE POOR LADY WITH AN EXPENSIVE HAIRSTYLE.ISN'T THIS OUTRIGHT FOOLISHNESS.DO YOU LADIES EVEN KNOW IF THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF THE ARTIFICIAL HAIR HAS ANY BONDAGE OR PROBLEMS THAT COULD TRANSFER TO YOU BY USING IT ON YOUR HEAD.THOSE OF YOUR OUT THERE WHO PURSUE VANITY, WELL IT PROFITS YOU NOTHING TO GAIN THE WHOLE WORLD AND LOSE YOUR SOUL.GOD IS MORE THAN ABLE TO HELP YOU IN ANY WAY. FOR THE PASTOR IN THIS MATTER,A TRUE PASTOR AND MINISTER OF GOD MUST DO EVERYTHING HE CAN TO MAKE SURE HIS MOST OF HIS MEMBERS MAKE IT TO HEAVEN AND CORRECT THEM PROPERLY.IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE CHURCH,YOU'RE FREE TO LEAVE BECAUSE THE TRUTH IS BTTTER TO SWALLOW.LET'S NOT DECEIVE OURSELVES! I THINK IF THE PASTOR WAS AFTER MORE MONEY,HE WOULD ENCOURAGE YOU TO DO WHAT YOU LIKE. IN THE THINGS OF GOD,YOU ARE NO MORE IN CONTROL OF YOURSELF,BUT THE HOLY SPIRIT AND YOU DO THINGS NOT ACCORDING TO YOUR WILL BUT TO HIS WILL. SO I WILL NOT CONDEMN ANY ONE BECAUSE HALF A WORD IS ENOUGH FOR THE WISE.

Before you judge please understand that we are all from different backgrounds and after all this is Waco we are talking about. He pastors a black church where about 90% of the female congregation are on welfare. What do you think will be left off when a single mother spends over $300 on tracks?
I don't know his motives but it sure makes sense what he said.
A woman gets 500 check from the govt, takes out 300 for her hair , 100 for groceries, 100 for some of her bills she is left with 0. yet there are more bills, insurance and other stuff she and her kids will need.
Solution to her problem
1. Prostitute (or fornicate/adultery as the case maybe) and make more kids
2. deal drugs
3.go to the pastor to help with the bills.
So does it not balance the equation if they take the weaves out of it?

@anon 8:34 its still their real hair so it doesn't matter . The pastor is referring to attaching other peoples hair to your head , your hair is your glory .

Anonymous said...

Linda, I disagree with you. This pastor IS concerned with the heart and soul. He is trying to encourage young women to realize that there is not one standard of beauty, that as strong, black women we are much more than the hair we wear. He recognizes the financial struggle of his congregation and desires to guide them towards being fiscally responsible. He may be a bit extreme by banning the hair weaves altogether (and I am all for weaves! :)) but his intentions are definitely good ones. And about the tithes, you can see that he has probably thought this through and cares more about the emotional well-being and self-confidence of the members of the church he pastors than what he takes home from the offering baskets every week.

Anonymous said...

I support him 200%! The vast majority of black women who wear weaves in the US do so because they face enormous societal pressure to fit into a European standard of beauty. If you haven't done so, make an effort to see Chris Rock's documentary 'Good Hair' and also read some of the work that has been done on hair weaves and the black community in the US. A situation were poor black women spend thousands of dollars on weaves instead of applying it to more beneficial things for themselves, their children and families makes no sense. It also makes no sense that the group of women that is among the poorest in the US actually spends loads more on hair weaves and products than any other group of females in the US. The pastor has spoken truthfully about a situation that needs to be addressed. And Linda, the fact that you are a weave fanatic does not give you the right to minimise the importance of the message the pastor is passing across. May be you should educate yourself more on the politics of hair in the black community in the US.

AND as for my Nigerian weave wearing sisters, isn't it ridiculous that someone sews another person's (or animal's) hair on her head and goes around feeling on top of the world? Isn't it especially laughable when such a person does a hair flip and tries to act the way white and Asian women do with their hair? Wake up guys and learn to love what God has given you instead of spending money on a consumer product that enriches other nations (and peoples) and adds no substantial value to you or your community and nation.

Anonymous said...

Linda, you don't know these afro-american women. PASTOR, SPEAK THE ALOE VERA BITTER TRUTH.
-these women wld rather spend ridiculous amounts of money to stitch another person's hair on her heas than use that money to pay her house rent and other bills.
-If you see how much they spend on weave...yet their babies which they have from different men go hungry and uneducated.

If someone sums up the amount of cash they spend on these fake hairs, it is enough to carry out complete university education, right to bachelor's degree at least. And i say AT LEAST cos in some cases, it can even lead to a Masters;
So Ms Ikeji,it's about common sense and right priorities.

By the way, what is wrong with your african hair?
IS IT NOT THE GOD YOU CLAIM TO LOVE SO MUCH WHO CREATED U WITH IT?

I am yet to see a white, latina or indian woman sew her head ENTIRELY with a nappy weave.
They won't. Do u know why?

1)They don't see the point of doing that; they find it crazy. You don't believe me? Ask any non-black woman; if she's sincere, she'll tell u the truth. I mean sewn-in weave, not extensions that you can clip and unclip at will

2) THESE NON BLACK WOMEN FEEL YOU AFRICAN WOMEN ARE BELOW THEM AND THAT THEY ARE BETTER THAN YOU; WEARING YOUR NAPPY HAIR WILL MEAN STOOPING DOWN TO YOUR LEVEL.UNWRITTEN RULES OF SUPERIORITY COMPLEX,BABY.

3)On the other hand, u wear their hair because whether u admit it or not, you envy and covet their hair and feel their hair is better than yours. And consciously or unconsciously, you prove that they are Superior to u.

And the Korean hair sellers mock u and smile their way to the bank, their kids go to the best schools and get the best education, while u impoverish yourselves by buying their hair with NO RETURN ON INVESTMENT.

A number of comments here have referred to the fact that some women wear weaves because they are suffering from hair loss. We need to understand that a lot of the hair loss black women experience is directly due to poor management of their hair. The chemicals in hair relaxers (especially when not properly applied) can and do damage hair follicles. [And for those of you who might not be aware, some recent research suggests that the high incidence of fibroids in black women might be attributable to the chemicals that seep into their bodies via the scalp when relaxers are used. Some of these chemicals in relaxers are also suspected of being triggers for weight gain.] In addition to chemical hair relaxers, braiding and weaving of hair as well as extended use of hair weaves also cause hair loss in black women. This is due to the stress that is placed on the hair when the braiding or weaving is too tight. This normally causes traction alopecia; usually more visible around the hair line, hence, mama iyabo. If you read a number of the natural hair blogs on line, you will find a lot of shared experiences from women whose hair bounced back after they got rid of the hair relaxers and tight braids and weaves. Black women need to educate themselves more about how to care for their hair in order to reduce the incidence of hair loss traceable to poor hair management.

Is there something in the weave on that makes women get so fascinated by it?

What is inside the head of our women?

I know a man that begged his wife to stop using the weaves and it almost turned into a quarrel?

What is in it?

Have these Chinese makers put something in the weaves to bind our women to it?

Hungry stomachs, expensive weaves! foolishness of the first order.

PASTOR RIDE ON!

I saw the article and many pissed women (black women of course) are threatening to leave the Church but the pastor is standing his ground.
LET THE TRUTH BE TOLD BECAUSE ONLY THE TRUTH SETS FREE. LIES HAVE NEVER FREED AND WILL NEVER FREE ANYONE!
Imagine struggling on a low income and spending it on weave!!! Why do black women have so much difficulty in using logic?

BLACK WOMEN, YOUR ADDICTION FOR WEAVES AND REFUSAL TO LEARN HOW TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR OWN HAIR WILL LEAD YOU TO YOUR DOOM!!!
Instead of thinking constructively, you remain in your ignorance and cuss out anyone who tries to reason with u.

YOU WILL END UP BALD LIKE THE ARROGANT WOMEN THE BOOK OF ISAIAH PORTRAYED WHEN GOD SPOKE AGAINST THE ARROGANCE AND PRIDE OF ISRAELITE WOMEN. THAT IS WHY YOU SEE LESS AND LESS AFRICAN WOMEN HAVING NATURAL LONG HAIR.

Was it like that in our grandmothers' days? Go look at those old black and white pics.Look at their hairs. Their heads were full of hair which beautifully groomed, whether in afro or plaits or threaded. And there were no weaves nor relaxers or any of that sophisticated nonesense.

Abeg, the pastor makes sense. It has nothing to do with money. Truth cannot be bought.

Do non-black women cover their whole heads with foreigh hair to look beautiful??? Does the indian or latina woman do that?

Care for your natural hair, groom it well. We have the advantage of having creative hair styles which we can do with our own hair.

Instead of cussing and starting pointless arguments, will it kill us to sit down and reflect on what he said and why he said it? It's pointless reasoning with black women
whether by force, by fact or by logic, even by divine revelation, the black woman never gets it right. Instead, she delights wallowing in her foolishness and ignorance and she thinks it's cool.

- Naomi Campbell's pics was posted for all the world to see the long term effects of weaves; nothing changed.

-Rachel Edjeren came out as a living testimony to testify against the dangerous spiritual implications of having another person's hair on one's head; she was abused and called mental;

-Chimamanda Adichie said it loud that most african women can't stand their own hair and what was the outcome? Insult upon insult.

-Now this pastor exposes the silliness of some women concerning this weave wahala; they still don't get it.

EVEN IF ANGELS COME DOWN WITH FULL REVELATION AND THE WILL OF GOD CONCERNING THESE THINGS, no change.

Abeg, leave the black woman to delight in her stupidity.
Black women, you love it when people lie to you. That is why even your men lie to you non-stop.

If this pastor came out and said "it is well, prosperity and wealth is your portion," you would have applauded.
But simple truth, you refuse to listen.

Anonymous said...

If you feel this man is saying nonesense, consult the Lord and ask Him to give you full revelation concerning things like vanity, attaching someone's hair and setting priorities, no question is too difficult or too stupid for Him to answer. But be ready to handle the answer, cos truth hurts but it also sets free.

Me, i believe this pastor makes sense.

Linda, use your blog wisely and avoid lashing at things you are not sure of. Wigs are fake and doesn't beauty. Many women sleep with 10 men just to raise money for wigs or weavon (Brazillian hairs etc). Some girls have refused to do little jobs which can grow tomorrow to become big because they feel belittled when they wear wigs and do small business. The wigs actually cover their brains and allow them wallow in the beds of sugar daddies.

Unless they personally told him they're struggling yet can afford weaves, I don't see how he knows it's not synthetic or borrowed/gifted hair on their heads!

Fuck him!! where does he get off telling people how to dress and what to wear. Wth! Because one wears a weave doesn't mean they love god any less than one who doesn't

What the fuck is the pastor's business.i don't think Linda's opinion was dumb. The pastor should focus on more important issues and stop complaining about how people spend their money.

Linda stop talking balderdash sometimes....if u post any news, stop been the one to conclude or make ur followers tow ur line of comments, u re fond of doing that, sometimes u answer questions urself....having said that, the man of God was concerned about those who re poor and yet some sends up to 300 dollars to buy artificial hair, also, he was trying to encourage black women to be proud of themselves and contented instead of trying to copy the oyibos...so Linda try to understand it...if u like no post my comment.

Self made.

An Unbelievably Dumb Human Like Linda, With Her Unintelligent Self. What Else Do I Expect Her Opinion To Be? Of Course The Pastor Took A Shot At Her too.

How does wearing a weave enhance one's beauty? The pastor is saying the truth. Why must we comply with the European definition of beauty? I don't have to wear a weave to be pretty but I know ladies that cannot show what their real hair looks like. Tell me that is not a self esteem issue. The man has a point. Some ladies will not have money to eat or pay bills but they have money for fake hair. LINDA post my comment abeg.

You really just fail to see the point Linda and that's understandable. You need to be careful about making such nasty comments about things you don't understand. The weaves are not the problem, the monies are not the problem, but too bad you can't decode what the issue is, it is for the spiritually discerning! Don't talk about tithes & offerings as if you really know what those are about, cos its obvious you don't.

Good talk Wale!

You women have self-esteem issues, you hate your natural hair and i will prove it to you.

Non-black women also use hair attachments from time to time. True. BUT they use hair attachments that have THE SAME texture as their original hair.

Why don't our women also wear weaves that have the same texture as their natural hair?

Instead, they choose to wear sleek, straight, sometimes blond weaves. Nothing to do with their original hair texture.

Is it not another way of making a statement which states you prefer that indian hair texture to the nappiness of your own hair?
You'd rather have any type of non-black hair on your head than yours.

Linda, check your ZELDA hair. Does it feel like your natural hair? I don't think so.And u looove how it feels, don't u? Doesn't feel like that your rubbery ,tough, stressful unmanageable hair, right?
And you ought to see how you girls touch and stroke those weaves. See the tender, loving care with which they brush that hair. When they comb their own hair, they begin to swear and complain. The annoying part is when they flip that weave so that it floats in the Wind "oh, this my hair o"

This is unconscious self-hate and inferiority complex of the highest order.

If that pastor was all about money, do u think the pastor would take such a strong stand and stand his ground in the midst of all the insults? with all these angry black women around? It's about having convictions, Linda. Not everyone is money-minded; some people have genuine concern for the souls of others.

Anonymous said...

Nothing can separate our women from their love for fake hair.
Some women are ready to lose their souls for these weavons, rather than decide to take care of their natural hair.

Lol lol

i thought God made no mistakes.
But why do u choose indian and even synthetic plastic fibers over the hair God gave u?

Before u go to sleep, please lock the door, or like the bible says "go to that quiet, secret place". Sit in front of your Mirror or just sit by yourself.

Ask yourself sincerely these questions:

-Why am i doing this to myself?

-Can't i be beautiful with my own hair if it is well groomed and well plaited/ cornrowed/styled?

-Do i really look that beautiful with those weaves on?

-Is it Worth it in the long run?

And most importantly:

-what is wrong with my hair?why do i behave as if God punished me by giving me the hair i have on my head?

-why am i ashamed of my hair?

-Is my hair really that bad or am i the one who's ignorant on how to care for it?

-Is it a curse or a sin to have natural african hair and rock it?

-Is non-black hair really better than african hair and who said so?

Be sincere with yourself. Answer those questions sincerely. It is and it will remain between you and your God. Sometimes we need to move away from all the hype and reflect on what has lasting value.
Good luck.

Linda, you should see this and reflect on why you love so much those weaves. I think this post spurred interesting viewpoints .

Gosh! U guys chill. Why are Nigerias so narrow minded in their thoughts? One of the most evil nation, u r all mean to each other and then act like u r d Pope. Abuse people for stating their thoughts, is that Godly? God takes u just as u r, not by ur looks. Everyone should go to church to feel safe and welcomed not victimized. The pastor can give his opinion but he has no right to mandate his opinion. Please people open ur mind! Emancipate ur self from mental slavery. It's absolutely ok for people to not share ur idea! It's a free world people. Be enlightened stop shaming me. I'm so embarrassed to be a nigerian reading all these comments. Kai!

Nope he wasn't, for him to barn it, he wasn't thinking of people that can afford it. Why is he prioritizing for them. If I'm bald and I starv to buy weave, so? If I buy because I can afford to, so? He should preach to encourage self esteem not banning stuff. What's my pastor doing in my closet or bank account?

Anonymous said...

Thank u!

Linda, there's nothing a pastor will say or do that you won't have problem with. He spends money, you go talk. he no spend, you still go talk. Better leave them alone.

I am shocked to hear that a priest would be bothered about women wearing weaves. There is no harm in wearing hair weaves to church until and unless your hair reduces the devotion you show to The Lord.
