Arik Air flight bound for Abuja has near disaster in bad weather

Arik flight w3232 from Enugu to Abuja scheduled to depart Enugu at about 10:00am was delayed until 11:40am due to reports of approaching bad weather in Abuja.

According to an eyewitness, in a rush to get to Abuja before the start of the rains the pilot ignored all warnings and took the aircraft and passengers through an extremely turbulent flight.

A passenger on the fight said, "People clung on to their seats for dear life with shouts and cries of Jesus".
On landing at Abuja the plane almost skidded off of the runway and passengers had to wait on the aircraft for thirty minutes before disembarking due to heavy rains in Abuja.
"This is the hallmark of the flight delays and the resultant effects of lack of NCAA," the passenger added.

We should reject this season and let it not be like OBJ's time. Why will these jaguda pilots keep taking risks? I don't blame them. NCAA is there sitting on their black asses and taking bribes.

The reporter did not state the day it happened. Is that the latest style of Daily Times reportage? I thought it had a journalism school. Rubbish!!

This would have been a case of human error similar to the the 2008 Air France crash in brazil. The NCAA should be able to tell pilots to hold on in case of extreme weather. This time no be the plane o...na the person wey dey control am o.

Abeg oh. Enuf of all d deaths in dis country. Tnk God for safe landing at least.

Again? Thank God for safe landing; seems these airliners are still taking Nigerians for granted, until a Pilot is given a beating of his life by passengers before they will appreciate safety related issues NCAA or not. Mtchewww

I wonder why people find it difficult to understand that our airports are mortuaries and our planes are coffins. Till the aviation industry is re-vamped,ur simply on ur own.

Thank you very much Linda for NOT POSTING my 2 comments on Abbiba vs Michelle O. dress and my advice for the 33 yrs old mom of an 8 month old. People take their time to come to your blog and express their opinions, just for you not to post it! You know how frustrating that is? You should post EVERYONE's comment or DON'T post any comment at all! I understand some people say very bad things, ok take those out! But clean and thoughtful comments should not be discarded too!!!!!!!

That pilot needs a dirty slap!

Safety should come first even though it would cause flight delays.

Its such a pity dat standards and professionalism are being compromised in ds country, I cnt imagine dt afta d sad event dt occured only jst a month ago, a pilot wnts to act like 007 James Bond and feels he can risk d lives of human beings all in a bid to beat d rains.... wht an excuse.....d passengers shld put up a complaint and alert d airline operators on d risk n torture dey were subjected to by d Pilot despite d warnings......wld dt evn yield any result, Naija enh.....#smh# ....kels ọ̥n̶̲̥̅̊ point

Thank God for the safe journey. But why must the pilot ignore all the warning? For what reason?.I think that pilot should be giving a query.

Such news scares me cos am flying with Arik to jfk.Hmm.when i was coming 2 weeks ago I also had d same fear, though it was a smooth flight.Anyways, wat will be will surely be.

That pilot should be fired

Before we give ourselves over to blind hysteria, some questions should be examined:
How did the eyewitness quoted know of the warnings the pilot is alleged to have ignored?
Would the passengers have preferred to disembark in the heavy rain immediately the aircraft landed?
Is this passenger quoted an expert on aviation?
At this time of year when we have thunderstorms, almost all flights will experience turbulence at some time or the other.

THIS WRITE UP IS JUST A COOKED UP ONE TO GATHER UNNECESARY FURORE. EVERYONE IN THE AVIATION INDUSTRY IS AWARE THAT WE ARE IN THE HEART OF THE THUNDERSTORM SEASON...AND EVERY EDUCATED PERSON HAS HEARD THE PHRASE..."CHANGE LIKE WEATHER"
NO PILOT WILL RISK HIS OWN LIFE IN BAD WEATHER, TAKE NOTE...EVEN IF THERE WAS BAD WEATHER IN ABUJA WHEN THEY LEFT ENUGU, IT COULD HAVE CLEARED UP BY THE TIME THEY GET THERE. IF THE MET REPORT HAD ALSO REPORTED A FAIR WEATHER IN ABV AS AT WHEN THEY DEPARTED IT COULD HAVE BECOME BAD. PLS LETS NOT BE FOOLED BY SUCH SENSATIONAL REPORTS MEANT TO SELL PAPERS...MSTCHEEEW

The Nasty German Immigrant says...Thanks Anonymous July 14, 2012 6:22 PM some Nigerians like to jump to conclusion. Commercial Airplanes are over engineered to cope with Squall weather. Nigeria's weather systems are pretty mild compared to what pilots have to cope with in europe for instance Snow, sleet and fog without hitches. That's the nature of the business so i don't get the Fuss in naija...says The Nasty German Immigrant

U are obviously thinkin tru ur butt..so wen d passengers are called 2 board dia plane, dey shld check d weather and sit back in d departure lounge if it doesn't suit dem?..of course all 'sane' passengers wld board and wait for an 'all clear' 2 b given 2 d pilot..did they know he wld b so foolhardy 2 fly dem wen he wasn't given a go-ahead order?..guess u wldnt understand wat I'm talkin abt..u are used 2 molues wich u can jump thru d window at any tym..so ds wld seem like gibberish 2 u..pple like u who tnk dey are so smart bt end up lookin and sounding stupid...NEKS

@Anon 6.22pm. Thank you very much jare. Pple are busy blaming the pilot as if he just entered the aircraft and took off! Was he not cleared for take off?d flight from wat we have here was delayed before he ws cleared and pple boarded. Make we thank God for averting watever would have happened. But make we de use our tongue de count our teeth at times. Na God hand we dey alone.

True talk,n also very inteligent toughts!

They should warn that pilot, they are destroying human life not Animals life.he should be careful!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

How daft are u? How were they to know the weather was bad in Abuja?

Anonymous said...

Rubbish, rubbish,no wings ofNigeria pilot(Arik Air) will take off when there is bad wheather.while was de date not publish and registration of the plane.Arik has done well and have rebranded the aviation sector in Nigeria.

BLOGLORD said...

i am not sure its the pilots fault. For the flight to be delayed for 1hr 40 minutes due to weather indicates that the pilot/Arik was looking out for the passengers safety. The weather reports are either automated or generated by MET office staff and i am sure that a favourable weather report was given to the Pilot after the almost 2hrs delay for him to accept to carry on with the flight. After years of travelling i can imagine what passengers would be saying when told of the delay...'this Arik sef dem too dey delay' or 'My brother is waiting for me at the Airport in Abuja and he told me that IRS or SOSOLISO just landed in ABV,what stupid excuses are these people giving us for this delay' or 'NDI EWU MALU..ARIK '.etc.
It is the season for bad weather and operators should be careful and try not to maximise profit at the risk of compromising safety of lives and Nigerians{passengers] should try and be patient and understand delays caused by weather.

Does this pilots think they have a right to toy with peoples live?air lines should terminate the appointment of any pilot that refuses to follow protocol. In addition,i agree wt the writer on linda not posing comments,is becoming an addict,i understand u got other things to run buh just try your best to post comments.U know it can be very difficult to get ur followers bk once u lose them, take my advice.Remember when u started,u prayed to God to succeed wt things, now do not spoil things by ur own hand.

@Linda I really respect u but I urge that before u put any news what so ever u verify the authenticity 1st.
My name is Igboekwe Uche and I was on that flight.
First of all the flight was nt delayed @ all we took off @ the exact  10.55am ,secondly the landing was a bit rough which was nt the pilot's fault cos it was raining heavily and he did a very wonderful job landing that plane, thirdly we have to stay in the plane for @least 45mins cos it was raining heavily and no one was willig run into the air bus drenched.
Please get your facts right.
