Lagos okada riders on strike

All four unions of Okada riders and Tricycles (Motorcycle Transport Union of Nigeria, All Nigerians Autobike Commercial Owners and Workers Association and Okada Riders Welfare Association) have called on their members to stay off the street from 7am to 10am tomorrow Monday, 02 April 2012 to enable them attend a court session. Chairman of the four associations said the action was necessary to demonstrate support and solidarity in court following the suit filed on their behalf against the Lagos State Government over the banning of Okada from operating within the Ikeja Business District.

I wish the strike would be forever!

Not certain the strike will last, because most of these Okada riders relies on the income from the business for their Daily Living.
What Lagos State Government is trying to do is for their safety and security of the State any way.

Although the Okada operations present a nuisance to the decency and traffic flow of any city, but did the Lagos State Govt think through their decision thoroughly?
1. Do they have alternatives to fill the gap if the Okada riders were really to cease operating?
2. Is there any plan for re-training the now to be jobless operators to acquire other skills that could help them get employed in other sectors, e.g. small scale farming?
3. Is there any temporary economic aid that can be given to these people even if for 3-4 months, to enable them transit to other useful economic activities?.
These are the kind of measures a government need to have in place before embarking on any such bans on any economic activities of its citizens, otherwise you will just be churning out more criminals to the already unsafe country! A country that has no job for its growing population should have no business destroying peoples initiative. Okada riding is a lawful business and the riders have rights under the constitution to operate and to move about as they choose. So also, the passengers have the right to decide on the means of transportation to join. The CP of Lagos should concentrate on his job under the Police Act and the Constitution. Crime is growing by day; and he should do something about it. If the CP hate Okada riders this much, I appeal to him to tell the Police Affair Ministry to direct half of its 2012 allocation on job creation and see whether the number of Okada riders in Lagos will not come down.

I agree. Had also posted demanding the same last week. It's only fair that Linda balances the story.

But then since you've posted the link and by graciously posting this on your behalf, one can say that perhaps Linda's balancing the story. In anycase, Linda do the just thing.

I hope for ur sake u didn't do d last jamb. The word is ban not band! Get a copy of brighter grammer and use it.

The sage said...

Bros, u fall my hand. The word is rely, not relies or relles like u put there.
I know its easy to have typos but even what u were trying to write is a syntax error.

They should go on strike forever. I can't stand them with their reckless driving. There will be more sanity on the roads without the goats driving towards on coming traffic. They really get on my nerves!

Anonymous said...

Let them stay away forever.Okada is not for transportation.

As for the ogo story Linda bia over to you.

Who is to tell which side of the story is true? Ogo is dead. Kevin has not spoken. Third parties with vested interests wrote both accounts. As the second account called the first fiction and fabrication, so the first or even a third account emerge debunking the second account.

I suggest you Kevin supporters let this matter rest. Do the best you can for the kids.

The worst okada rider are those one from the north. They are so daft.... Imagine, one appeared from nowhere, i pressed my horn and he completely ignored me, till he hit my new car! when i asked him some questions, he kept staring at me. His other okada friend now informed me that he was DEAF and DUMB!!! I nearly passed out. Those are the crop of okada riders we have on our streets

Anonymous said...

Seriously who cares. These okada riders are mean. When they are wrong they gang up and either burn someone's car or beat of the driver. For crying out loud. We were healthier before they came.
