Topic of the day: Should the Federal Government Negotiate With Boko Haram?

I hear that the Federal Government has secretly inaugurated a panel to go into negotiation with Boko Haram. Is that the way forward? Should the government be negotiating with terrorists? Please share your thoughts

I think they should because they have failed in their quest to bring the Islamic terrorists to book. If negotiation is then the best option to take now, then they should. After all, the south and west have a lot to loose as we it takes or costs BH nothing other than some worthless lives (the suicide bombers)to inflict their horror on our own well cultivated, industrious and worthy lives.

If negotiations will stop the blood letting in our country, let it be. The Govt that is negotiating is still the same govt that created BH. So let the govt go ahead and negotiate.

that should be our motto now.when this is not the Niger delta crisis .its a freaking terrorist attack against the whole country.this is one thing i know wont happen during the military regime. they only understand one thing and that's blood shed..we should be ready to give them a battle not a freaking negotiation.

GOD BLESS NIGERIA

I do not believe that there is need to negotiate with fanatics or terrorists. Any attempt to negotiate with them will certainly lead to ethnics terrorism springing up everywhere in Nigeria. Worst still, it will as a matter fact reveal that the only language understood by the government to induce financial attraction from the central government is violent through terrorism. Make no mistake, if you negotiate with boko haram from maiduguri and kano today, be assured that each state in Nigeria will start financing terrorist groups in order to attract government negotiating with them with the ultimate aim of getting money from the central government. We should not encourage this kind of evil in our midst for goodness sake. The best bet we can do for our country is to aid and encourage the military to track down these demons in our midst. Boko Haram was never interested in peace or any compromise the FG would have given to bring peace. They only wanted a lull in hostilities so that they can re-arm and reorganize their lost rank and file.Perhaps blackmail the FG into releasing some of their sworn followers to go and resume the business of murdering innocent Nigerians. The FG is making a grave mistake by suspending full security operations against these murderers. That is why Boko Haram still thinks it would one day prevail.Because it gets the message the FG has no stomach to go after them squarely. They say Boko Haram has three wings apart from the splinters. Which of them do you talk with? the political wing comprising nationalist northerners, the military wing allies of al Queda and the criminal wing with mass membership drawn from the almajiris and other street urchins. Is there any control structure that binds the wings or the splinters together and makes negotiation better focused and easier? Otherwise, negotiation is just a waste of time, a hiatus to get them breathing space. God save Nigeria

We have morons in power Linda....these things can not happen in first world country...Goodluck, I am afraid has failed millions of Nigerians.

Negotiating with a terrorist group...one of the many signs of the end...and to think of the buffoon came on air to say that Nigerians are winning the war against terrorism...SHAME ON YOU!!!!

Yes the FG should negotiate with them in a peaceful atompshere, maybe another country.Something like an islamic country like Qatar where the BH people will not be arrested or jailed after or during the meeting. I believe the FG is to blame for what has happened to the country> I think some of these politicians help sponsor BH. By the grace of God all will be well

Its not bad to negotiate with terrorists, so long as you make an effective use of the carrot and stick. You throw d carrot to the terrorists in form negetiation and then apply force when necessary.

Well its quite obvious the fedral government can not still attend to this problem, if negotiating is the only way to stop them, why bother? if thats the only way to stop these unfortunate people from killing innocent lives, why consider it? Would you rather they ignored negotiating and sat down to watch these unfortunate humans destroy others? would you? No you wouldnt. If they ignore negotiating and the bombing still goes on, who are we fooling? GEJ is afraid.. CANT YOU SEE IT? NOTHING CAN BE DONE ABOUT THIS. OUR PRESIDENT HAS FAILED US. HE IS A DISSAPOINTMENT TO NIGERIANS. IF HE AND HIS WORKERS CAN NOT DO ANYTHING TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM BESIDES NEGOTIATING THEN THEY SHOULD GO AHEAD AND BE FAST ABOUT IT.

Seriously.... i believe any responsive and responsible government should explore all avenues available to secure peace inthe polity. having said that, because of the divergent nature of our enthic configuration, caution ought to be taken when insinuating a dialogue with a sect within one of such groups. it could backfire. On the other hand can help distract the terrorists and allow the agencies deploy initiatives that could help counter them. The problem is we have security chiefs that are fat off anarchy. Now push has come to shove.....can they perform?

I disagree with the FG's move to negotiate with BH... If they do,they sayin they give up and why would the almighty government give up to packs of useless fools...continue the fight until the last member of the sect is killed.....TP

nope, they must fight them head on, or else other groups would spring up.

I am not in anyway surprised because joona has always been a crafty negotiator. Remember he negotiated with virtually everyone that ever raised an eyebrow before he got there, even the musicians. Remember he went to beg the Alhaji that spearheaded the then northern opposition. His utterances and body language was appeasing Ibb and Obj. He employed Abati and Ribadu for a purpose. All major political positions are not just in northern hands by accident. . .look carefully. So no one should be surprised if almajiris and criminal bokoharamites areplaced on federal goverents payroll after this pointless negotiations. BUT THE BLOOD OF THE INNOCENT WILL FIGHT ONE DAY!

The last time Yaradua negotiated and gave armnesty to the Niger delta youths,Today they want to negotiate with Boko haram, Tommorrow they will also negotiate with mossob....so FG is saliently saying...Form your own group, cause violence, then we bring you to the round table and give you a share of the national cake...maybe each family should form their own violent group to get their own share of the cake..because the truth is that we all need our own share..

Hi LIB/Nigerians

Let us reflect and cast our minds to international scenes.
Boko haram is NOT a religious organization, govt knows that hence, rethink.
if the above is true, Muslims/Christians are killed altogether like 911 incident.

GEJ should act fast if not, he will be soon declare an incompetent leader which was the no.1 agenda of the group.
Thanks

ONOME says................................
Countries are run by laid down laws enforced by law enforcement bodies.Any society where rules are not followed to the latter will be overrun by chaos, anarchy and doom. When you steal, kill etc you should,no must be punished.Punishment changes a person, makes him/her consider the repercussions before committing the act again and serves as a deterrent to others.Even children know this!It is not exactly rocket science or nuclear physics!
I am chilled to the bone marrow when I learn that murderers are being negotiated with.IT IS ABSOLUTELY SHOCKING and DOWNRIGHT APPALLING.I have not lost anyone in this madness but I read the laments of those who have lost a child,a wife,a parent.I share in their anguish and pain because they may never get justice down and hence experience no closure on this unforgivable act.You quietly go to church to serve your God and someone kills you????And my Government wants to sit on a round table and negotiate with these religious lackeys?????

BE ALERT AND STAY SAFE NIGERIANS;unfortunately your basic rights are being trampled upon.
It will be well someday

Pride is of no relevance when human lives re lost everyday. Obviously the Federal government is incapable of eradicating this menace so if negotiating with Boko haram to state their demands and stop this incessant killing of young and priceless lives then am all for negotiation.

Who thought of ds idea? What a wrong strategy for conflict resolution with BH.
This will only show to these terrorist that Nigeria has no security n wiill only use money to cement issues thus BH members will use this as a blackmail to fg. They would Kip threatening to bomb here or there if a certain Amt isn't paid. How does ds affect us? FG will run out of funds n then turn to d masses thru subsidy, high tax rates, exaggerated national budget....
Use d supposed 5 billion for image laundering to get swat team from d u.s if u have to. Think of Facing ds terrorist squarely n stop playing cowardice by trying to negotiate.
Negotiating with killers? Sounds absurd!
It then means Nigerians r sweating so hard to pay a bunch of useless illiterates/thugs/terrorists.
So many lives have byn lost as a result of BH bombings. The 5billion fg intends to use for image laundering, use it to facilitate some form of

Please everyone take time to read @atobatele's comment. He/she is so on point when it comes to negotiation with boko haram. This would definitely lead to more terrorist groups from different factions/ethnic groups/political parties etc. God help Nigeria and give our President the courage to face Boko Haram and its political godfathers

I think the reasonable 1st step to resolving conflict is dialogue after Wich u can decide the next step to take. If they want sth absurd from the govt then u can use other methods like threats and force. If that don't work KILL THEM ALL.

Anonymous said...

well, this means more and more to come. even the militants that they negotiated with, are they not still conducting kidnapping sprees? so what makes them think that negotiating with boko haram will completely stop the issue at hand. and once they negotiate with this people, i can bet that another bunch of terrorists will form another group, they will continue to negotiate until they are tired. i cnt remember the US negotiating with osama bin laden or afganistan. we need tobe smarter than this.

Anonymous said...

The answer is NO... I'm a devout muslim and I believe very strongly these Boko Haram menace should be crushed. They have no justifiable cause for their killings (Not that there should be any when it comes to human lives). They are terrorists and should be treated as such. Islam preaches peace not this nonsense these idiots are carrying out in the name of Islam. May Allah (SWT) have mercy on us all.

I don't think negotiating with BH is in any way realistic, when the FG granted amnesty to MEND it was on the ground of improving the lively hood of the people of niger delta due to damage done to their land by the oil companies, but in the case of BH what would the negotiation be based on, dat western education would be abolished in nigeria cos dat's what dey claim to be fighting for.

George .E. James said...

I do not think it is appropriate for the government to negotiate with Boko haram. This would be underscoring a wrong paradigm that through violence individuals or groups can earn the attention of govt and also have access to certain previledges.
I feeel it is absolutely wrong.

Good day, panel of partial judges, my very uninformed co-debaters and to you the public that hardly read.

I am here to see if I can help in confusing you as much as Boko Haram is succeeding with our rulers.

I know that my co-debaters may come here to tell you that there should be no negotiations with BH. I know they are saying there is no basis for it.

Me, I stand firm to say Government should send GEJ to go ahead to negotiate, yes he should on the following conditions:
1. That BH will stop bombing north if Southern girls will look less fine. Reason? SSS investigations indicates that ladies from the South are hard to toast for BH
2. BH find trousers wearing southern ladies cause them too much wet dreams at night
3. After realeasing their members locked in various cells, these should be provided seven virgins for a foretaste of what their heaven is all about
4. In return they will stop the killings.
On all the above points hope you are as further confused as myself. Negotiate ko, negotiate ni!

Negotiate with them and another group will rise up,especially in these days of unemployment.

@ anon. 12:33...Mend had a cause. The Niger-Delta people lived off the Atlantic ocean.Their land and occupation(fishing)was messed up by oil drilling. It was only fair to compensate them.
BP/American government compensated the fishermen living around the gulf region when there was an oil spill there.
It was so,so unfair for the Northerners to be enjoying the money from the south, south while the people were dying from the pollution. All the money used to develop Abuja came from that area.
I am not from the Niger-Delta.I just love fairness.

Atobatele has really says it all. I do follow his comment on critical issues and i always bow for his/her comment. Cant forget in hurry his/her comment on Oteh SEC DG and that of FRSC concerning changing of plate number. Whoever you are Atobatele i doff my cap for u. U are a great analyst. Bak to the topic, I think GEJ is clueless and has no idea of what dialogue means. If you want to dialogue with any set of people then their claim must afirmative and that cant be trace in this BH pple. No sane govt ever dialogue with terrorist.
