Senate demand April date for fuel subsidy removal implementation

After a one-hour meeting in the senate yesterday, the senate have asked FG to suspend the subsidy removal until April 1, 2012, following the shut down of the nation’s economy, caused by the nationwide strike.

The senate set up a committee to meet with the president and gave the committee a 48-hour ultimatum to report back the outcome of the meeting to the senate.

According to some law makers, we are still operating in the 2011 budget, which ends March 31st...so why remove petroleum subsidy in January Mr President?

Why are these people so out of touch with reality? This isnt about subsidy reinstaement anymore. The time has come for the nigerian leaders to finally give account to the poor masses they suck dry every single day for the last 51 years. How long did they think this would continue ? Okonjo has said the country isnt broke now but will be broke by 2015 if we continue with the subsidy. Now my point is this, if they cut down their salary and allowances by at least 50%, they can save money and start working on the pallatives measures before 2015. This is 2012 so i dont see how measures cant be put in place within the next 3 years if this government is serious. But of course they are not serious. Deziani's husband has gooten a tremendous amount of crude oil sales contracts, dame patience jonathan is taking lucrative contracts through NNPC and NIMASA, same with General Azazi who has lucrative condensate contracts from the NNPC as well and so on. Yet they are claiming ther is no money. Look i never liked OBJ but i can tell you now that i prefer OBJ to GEJ (and im from bayelsa state) . Nigerians must look beyond voting based on religious or ethnic sentiments for once. I mean look at fashola for crying out loud. Even though he is a pawn in tinubus chessboard, we at least can see a difference in lagos state.just a pity he spoilt his hard work and good name wit all this lekki toll rubbish but then again his pros outweigh his cons. Same thing with obj. But mr badluck ebele has NEVER meant well for nigera because he never even had plans for us. A Breath od Fresh Air my butt. Nigerians........RISEEEEEEEE!!!!!!! Now is the time. Only last week the EU commended GEJ for good governance. Today wey yawa don gas, i havent seen one oyibo man from europe or yankee come to tell oga jona that he is doing a good job.......and these are the plastic diplomats GEJ wants to rub shoulders with? Na wa for inferiority complex abeg. I doubt GEJ would even be able to deliver if he was the vice chairman of a local govt committee on zoology, talkless of being a president. He is An educated illeterate. Yes i have said my mind and as a Bayelsan i apologize to Nigerians for this error of a president. There are far more enlightened people in Bayelsa and the Niger delta as a whole for us to have presented this imbecile to the masses as a presidential candidate. And to all u PRO GEJ Linda Ikeji Blog readers, you can jump off a cliff with your hopeless president too. I am from bayelsa, from south south, from the niger delta and proud to call a spade a spade. No mincing of words abeg. I have no time for politics of religion or ethnicity, what i want is a candidate who can deliver......a visionary president to lead this country out of the madness. Ladies and gentlemen pls pls pls and pls the 2015 presdiential election begins now!!! Thanks

A good option for Mr. President for his good intentions for this nation.
Maybe, he would use this period to put certain measures in place. This would also give time for Mrs. Ikonjo
(sin cup) Uruala (defiling land) to resign her designation and save money for Nigeria from her exorbitant salary.
Nevertheless, I vehemently advocate subsidy removal from a sincere and transparent government.

That's what they came up with? Suspend the pain till April, which is 3 months away and will be here sooner than y'all think. SMH!!

Nonsense!
The Senators are part of the problem
let them start by slashing their salaries and allowances.
this protest is not just about subsidy, its about good governance, transparency, corruption and waste.

SENATORS IF YOU THINK THAT PROSPONING TILL APRIL WOULD SOLVE THE PROBLEM YOU LIE COME APRIL THE PROTEST WOULD START AGAIN. THIS IS NOT JUST ABOUT SUBSIDY REMOVAL BUT ABOUT YOUR GREED IMAGINE 1 TRILLION NAIRA TO PAY YOUR SALARIES AND 1 BILLION NAIRA TO FEED 1 MAN AND HIS FAMILY WETIN IT STINKS IN THE EAR

@ Ebipade Preye too bad i can't click to "like" ur comment. U re 1 true nigerian. Am from SW,not a fan of OBJ too but he was able to payoff d national debt, deregulate telecom industry, build massive external reserve, launch d SAT1 (though am yet to c d relevance of weather sat in naija whn wt my lil knwlge of meteorology i can predict d weather n seasonal changes, unlike in Asia,Americas n europe whr it's actually needed), with subsidy in place.....less i forget loot as well. More so,allocation for subsidy was in billions till Mr no-shoe got in n jerked it up to trillions

The fact that they even didn't bother to wait till the end of the budget year shows how insensitive the Govt is. Why be in such a hurry?
I thought the 2011 budget year covers fuel subsidy.

Postponing it to April is not smart. Get joe boy to commit to performance timelines on use of d subsidy funds. Where he fails then heavens can fall on him and his team. This will mark an unprecedented accountability in Govt.

so they are saying that come april we would overnight have good roads, hospital, education and evn light (electricity) abi well they are wrong as nija no dey carry last na 1st we dey carry they are just hypocrites all of them

Why do I get the feeling that the removal was a sting operation? If it was meant to be removed in April and was then removed in January, it makes me wonder if GEJ was trying to pull the rug from under some people who had plans for that April announcement. But anyway, whAtever the case, things must change. The country was already messed up before jona got there, anyone who is president will always be blamed for everything that is wrong, even if it has been wrong since1950. We all know a few powerful people run this country no matter what....they are the ones we need to get rid of, with them still there, nothing will change as they will tie the hands of the elected president from now till they die.

Did I hear the senate say before April 2012, there would be uninterrupted power supply, all federal and state roads rehabilitated or completed, all refineries repaired and some new ones completed? Do this for US the people with OUR "oil windfall" money and we would thank you and welcome the deregulation of the oil sector.

How many cows una dey slaughter daily for Aso rock to wan use one billion naira chop for one year? Make una take worm medicine comot the "colonies" from una stomach, also tell the invisible mouths wey una dey feed say the citizens wan use dem money repair roads, refineries and power plants.
Anyway (wink, wink), I understand say na for personal enrichment, even the allocation for upgrade of this and that within the executives and legislative corridors, stipulated part of all funds end up in designated purses. Abi, how person go become billionaire in 4 years when legal salary and allowances for the period no reach am?

The trick be say if na only 5 million naira be all your assets before dem swear you in for office, declare say your asset be 1 billion naira (asset verification my ass). When you finish four year term as billionaire, who wan question you say how you become billionaire.

Naija, we hail thee!
