NLC Declares Weekend Break For Strikes, Rallies And Protests

Press release from the NLC/TUC below...
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) and Joint Action Front (JAF) commend the Nigerian people for turning out in their millions since Monday January 9, 2012, to protest the astronomical increase in the price of PMS (Petrol). We commend them for their resolute stand and insistence in struggling for a better country.
The Labour Movement and its civil society allies after nationwide consultations has decided that this weekend, Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th January, 2012, will be observed as strike, protest and rally-free days.
We ask Nigerians to utilize these days to rest, restock and get re-energized for the continuation of the strikes, rallies and protests from Monday 16th January, 2012.
Discussions with Government
The NLC, TUC and their allies in the Civil Society Movement on Thursday 12th January 2012 met with the Senate leadership, Nigeria Governors Forum and the Executive Arm.

At the meeting, Labour asked the Presidency to suspend the new petrol (PMS) price increases announced on January 1, 2012. In return, we offered to suspend forthwith, the strikes, mass rallies and street protests. We also suggested that an expanded committee be set up which would discuss the fuel subsidy issue and pricing for petrol.

The Government side presented a counter proposal asking Labour to negotiate new fuel prices. Since we had no such mandate, Labour declined and decided to return to its National Executive Council meetings, which will be held on Saturday 14th January 2012 for a possible expanded mandate.

Labour commends the National Assembly for its intervention and further urges the Presidency to be more reconciliatory towards the people and show more understanding and sensitivity to their feelings and collective interests.

NLC will eventually suspended the the strike if FG ready to remove little amount from the current 141. NLC are big time thieves as well as FG executives. Don't forget the time of adams osi omo ole. It is high time Nigerians defend theirselves without relying on NLC.

Good evening Linda, first things first, while there were miscreants at the rally, this picture doesnt paint the truest picture of those of us that attended the rallies day in day out.a lot of us came from the corporate world.that said,i would like to say a big congrats to all of us that contributed in any way towards the relatively peaceful demonstration.there were some mishaps and may the lives of those who died in the struggle be compensated in the heavens.amen.if we are to be honest, this is by far the largest turn out of nigerians from all works of life and genres.even the june 12 protests didnt generate this type of crowd.thank you to all of us and weldone to us too.for the people in the entertainment field that donated of their time free of charge,we know it took courage as we know you would have normally thought of what you might be losing from govt paronage if you appeared so publicly.a few people were noticeably quiet though.genny, steph, uche, dbanj, frank edoho, lagbaja, why didnt we hear from you?you could have made your comments instead of been quiet.you dont have to be for or against to comment.you could have acted as good ambassadors and mediate.daddy showkey having campaigned extensively for the president during the elections last year still courageously came forward to mediate.he didnt say what the govt did is right or wrong,he simply said the president should listen to the people that defied everything ad everyone to have him elected.if we were wise enough to vote for you then you sir should be wise enough to listen to us.once again mr president,we havent said you shouldnt take out this subsidy,we have simply said its hard for us to trust a government that tells us to fast while they eat several meals a day.it is my hope and prayer that God touches your heart and allows you hear your people.you must consult with yourself, your God and your conscience.step by step sir and you will lead us to the promised land.God bless the president of Nig,God bless the people of Nigeria and God bless the FRN.A word is enough for the wise sir.

When the people in abuja say the crowds were paid or rented, its a huge joke to me.i wish we were allowed to fill a register with our names and work places and the government will be shocked at the calibre of people that came out.we are from the middle and in several cases, the elite works of life.bankers, oil industry workers, telecomms, successful entrepeneurs, islamic clerics and christian leaders(not including pastor bakare).i doubt if the labour,tuC,save nigeria group,or the occupy nigertia people can afford us.we came out because we understand the documents released by the fed govt themselves.it really isnt so hard to understand.you donnot need to convince people too much that a govt that still needs 1billion naira to feed just the occupants of Aso villa is a government that is ready to fight corruption.enough said.

Even if NLC compromises and ends the strike,we as nigerians are now more informed about what our leaders do.the documents that have leaked and those that have been made available by them has been quite enlightening.but what upsets me the most is when the government tells us they will give us sme palliatives.!!!!as a house of rep member said, how can you give me a palliative(relief) for what is right fully mine?is the president and all the cabinet members ruling the nation from their personal monies?just resign hobnorably mr president.you are too weak.

The govt is laughing at us.during presentations and talks at rallies, the people talk with so much pain and hurt.when we watch the govt officials meet to discuss this issue of urgent national matter we see them laughing and cracking jokes.the speaker of the house had to tell them several times to stop joking around as if they are children that need to be cautioned.yesterday the press saw one of the govs enterring the meeting and he said "subsidy o ni baje" while laughing.they havent bought fuel in years nor paid for anything in years.God dey.

The man who says june 12 did not generate this kind of crowd.. Was there democracy? Even during Obasanjo could labour do this? Now even the opinion of those who support subsidy means nothing and never posted at lindas one sided journalism, she would rather tag them 'rented crowd'. Tank God 4 GEJ who truly have demonstrated strong believe in the rule of law more than most previous Naija leaders

I live partly in Ghana and can confirm to these government apologists that they are wrong. First, the price of oil in Ghana includes huge taxes. And the quality of petro in Ghana is superior to what we buy in Nigeria. These are facts. Two, Ghana is not yet an oil-rich nation like Nigeria. Three, Ghana enjoys a better infrastructure than Nigeria. I don’t have a generator in my house. My water does not come from a borehole. The roads are far better and regularly maintained. The level of corruption is lower even if it exists. Four, Ghanaian politicians are better disciplined than our own. They are not able to steal in arrears and in advance like people do in Nigeria. There is crime and punishment to a large extent in Ghana. The President of Ghana cannot live like an Emperor. President John Agyekum Kufuor lived in his own home for the eight years he governed. We lived, and still live on the same street, and never was our road ever blocked to human or vehicular traffic. The incumbent President of Ghana, Professor John Atta-Mills lives in his own house till this day. The house is even located in a popular housing estate. We should never compare sleep to death.

Blood of Jesus. Look at that thug in in the vest. This one can kill without second thots o...To all those saying 65naira or nothing. Please let us be realistic, the govt should not have to completely forgo their plans for generating funds. We should be able to meet in the "middle" somehow. Whatever that middle ground is, I leave to the economy experts to advise us on that

bloglord said...

@ MYTHOTS, oh pls shut up! which economy experts???
*big hiss with emphasis on economy experts*

Wallahi, if the labour guys sell us out for 100 - 120 naira per litre, they'll be on my hit list. I'll make sure they are wiped off the face of the earth. See Adams Oshiomole now. Sell out and thief!

I watched with dismay the press footage on channels news after the reconciliation meeting between d labour leaders and the representives of the FG.its sad that the president didnt deem it fit to be present.it is also very painful and sad that our senators, governors and government officials are always laughing and cracking jokes at issues of national importance.the labour leaders looked tired and pained and we didnt elect them.but the people we supposedly elected that should be acting in our best interest find us a huge joke.i will not stoop so low to wish on them the hardship that people are going through.its very sad.
