A Lagos high court today sentenced Major Al Mustapha, the former chief security officer to late dictator SanniAbacha, and Alhaji Lateef Shofolahan, a protocol officer in the MKO Abiola campaign organisation, to death by hanging, for the 1994 murder of Hajia Kudirat Abiola, the wife of late buisness mogul and winner of the June 12 election. Why not hang Boko Haram leaders, is it Al Mustapha who is a national issue at this point in time?

I do not agree with this judgement.Fact is that in the military, when given an order by a superior, you have to obey, most times, at the risk of death. Yes,he should have been punished, but, at the most with twenty years, tops.

I'm not one to rejoice over the passing of death penalty on anyone but Al Mustapha did you ever think that a day like this will come? When you'll be marked for death like the countless people you ordered to be executed. This is life, human beings always forget that one day they'll face judgement. Bring him out today & make him CSO to Jonathan and he'll revert to his old ways as an executioner. Sorry dudes. This somehow is payback. Adios Al...say hello to your grand master & dearest boss in hades. Dr W

where can i read the story of how they caught him. Did abacha really ask that they kill this gorgeous woman? why was she a threat to them? was she planning on running for office as well like her late hubby? all these people making noise about Jona Jona dem born any of you well to have tried this during abachas regime? now they are all having guts carrying placard calling jona badluck..lol..thank ur stars the man is quite transparent...even boko haram, most of you cannot publicly condemn...

Patrick said...

In my personal opinion, the powers that be cannot condone his presence and they decided to use the judiciary to get rid of him.Otherwise,he doesn't deserve a death sentence. He was only obeying military orders. The judge should have tempered justice with mercy.I pray he gets a favourable appeal, and if he fails, may his soul find favour in the face of God.

Linda PLEASE it was 1996 o and not 1994.The Abiola's are like family friends asides that everyone knows that Kudirat was killed in JUNE 1996 and 1994 so please edit/correct.

Anonymous said...

Linda pls get your dates right, Kudirat was murdered in June, 1996.

hello, am tired of the excuse that he was just carrying out an order. if it were to be his wife, kids or mother (God forbid) would he have done it diligently. Let us face the truth. I am not happy abt the ruling coz he is human (but thats if they will actually hang him)but he could have earn an honorable one resigning from Abacha's govt instead of living to carry out those killings. pls next post!

one reason why northern Nigeria hasn't been seceded from the rest of Nigeria? obviously the only contribution they have made in the entire history of Nigeria is terrorism which they claim is religious and oga GEJ,what is really wrong with you?

A delicate and highly politicized case! Ordinarily we should all jump-up and shout Hurray! The Daniel has come to judgment – “…those who kill by sword shall die by sword”! On a second thought, should an individual be guilty of an offense committed for and on behalf of the State? On the other hand, if the “strike-force” however, terrifying it might sound had failed in their duties and obligation to the State, would they not have been guilty as charged? Whichever way, this judgment throws-up a whole-web complexities between the individual rights and freedom of choices, and his/her duty and obligations – whether to one’s family, the community or the State – Kant’s theory of “categorical imperative”. Law is an ass, always bias towards one spectrum of power or the other. As lies to wanton boys, so are we to gods – they kill us for their games. Judges do not make laws. They interpret. So Justice Dada has done. We need judges who would be true to their conscience, who cannot be bought and bribed. There is a Supreme Judge of all who will call all humans to account for their sins, whether great or small. His judgment goes beyond circumstantial and non- circumstantial evidences because his undeniable watchdog lives with each individual and only needs to be activated when the time is ripe.
While the case of these men elicit shades of views and emotions, how prepared are we for our own individual judgment days for the smallest hidden , unconfesseed and unrepented of acts of criminal offence in the sight of our Creator. May we be wise and consider our own final end!

Barbaric judgement. What happened to life imprisonment without pardon?

Anonymous said...

At this point in time when d northern Nigeria is burning, they are talking of hanging Mustapha, why not life imprisonment, they should avoid incurring d wrath of Bokoharam to Lagos state.

Thank God that the judiciary is taking its duties seriously. I'm finally proud to be a lawyer in this country. Justice will be served at last. However they also need to work on the length of time it takes for justice to be served. The average case is in the courts for 10 years upwards. That is so appalling. Justice delayed is invariably justice denied.

Y should they hang him? sometimes the law is a bitch why did they keep him for so long if they were going to kill him anyway they should have done that long ago instead of giving him false hope many others have done much worse and still they let them go.This country is just breaking my heart
