Tyranny? Cameroon's President declares bid for another term after 29 year reign

Cameroon's President, Paul Biya, 78, today made an official bid for re-election in the forthcoming October elections, after almost 29 years in the seat of power.

Biya is one of Africa's longest-standing heads of state. He benefited from a 2008 constitutional amendment scrapping limits to presidential terms.

And Cameroonians will just siddon look? Hmmmm....

if he is doing his work, as crazy as his 29yrs term is, he shuld come back. its not abt fighting for democracy when ur not ready. ull only give room for more tyrants and wolves in sheep clothing so its between d devil and d deep blue sea. but seriously, my problem with these kind of ppl is dey turn it to family business. his cousins and children probably fill up the ministerial nd senatorial positions

My Cameroonian friend explained that it's difficult for them to unite cos they speak different languages. There's the French speaking side and the English speaking side so to come together to fight against him may be difficult. Think Tower of Babel.

I really dont know much about cameroon,,,but in my own opinion,,,if this man is doing good for his country then let him stay......of what use is Nigeria's 4 or 8 years tenure of our silly leaders that has never yielded anything fruitful??its not the number of years spent,,,but the effectiveness of that leader in the years spent,,,,,,,

idiots. They should kill him. When do these fools realize power isnt their God given right?

He's weak man afraid of life outside the corridors of power...on the other hand, the people of Cameroun have not summoned the nerve to cause a shift in government

I keep hearing he's a good President. My Camerounian colleague speaks so well of him, but then again her brother-in-law is a Minister.
He's backed by the French government so unless that backing wanes, i don't see him going.
When or if he's ready to step down, he'll hand over to a son or a stooge.
Sad!

the guy is just as useless as any other president. i say this on good authority cuz i have lived in that country. he is jst as bad as all the other african leaders who have rwefused to give up power. rumour has it that he is grooming his son to take over when he finaly dies/resigns. so i think its fair to say that cameroon is operating a mornachical system of govt.
as for the people, as long as they have their beer to drink, they really can't be bothered.

I cant believe that with all thats happened this year that this man can even think of running for President again....when will people learn??? And that just tells you why corruption and the like will never cease in this world...Every rogue sees the demise of another and is like..no,this can never happen to me..I hope his people wake up and show him the way out..head first, nonsense!!!

am Cameroonian,he is not dong anything for cameroon. thats why he scrapped the constitution so he can die in office. cameroonians tried ptotesting but to no avail. nothing is going on over there. he will still win.he has everybody on his palms. its so sad.

for starters Linda i am dissapointed in ur exit comment,i thought journalism was unbiased and well researched.he just announced his bid to run, that doesn't mean he will, secondly all those saying he is grooming his son to take over just shows that u really know nothing abt him,his son is under 17yrs,thirdly i know i am not God to determine his health or anything but that man has had numerous surgeries and his health is failing him.lastly,we cannot start a revolution to kick him out when we do not have a suitable replacement, that would be like trading a trash can for a dumpster...see what is happening in Libya.pls people make constructive arguments and dont expose ur ignorance.

@last anonymous.....LINDA IS NOT A JOURNALIST....

Oh no Linda, there you go again. I hope you realize how huge this blog had become. I followed the Mercy Johnson supposed wedding chronicles on here and was impressed on your approach.

Anywayz, my point is that this kind of statement "And Cameroonians will just siddon look? Hmmmm...." fit cause wahala. Always try to be unbiased bcuz we the readers know the truth! We the readers can make such comments and not you.

Anon September 5, 2011 9:20 PM; so Frank Biya born in 1971 is not his son? He isn't the late wife's son, but he's still his son.

Ignorant is an overused cliche now.

There is noting we can do o linda!! but at least he brings peace

The tyrants are those who do not want President Paul Biya to run as candidate and those who want to boycott the electoral process. Luckily they are few because Cameroonians unanimously want President Paul Biya as President for the next 7 years.

Hey, I'm new to running a blog and internet sites in general and was curious about how you got the "www" included in your web address name? I see your web address, "http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=9174986572743472561&postID=5701969028035069106" has the www and my domain looks like, "http://mydomain.com". Do you know the simplest way I can alter this? I'm using
Wordpress. Many thanks
