Nollywood actress Geraldine Ekeocha passes on

The actress died yesterday after a fibroid operation in a hospital in Enugu. May her soul rest in peace...amen.

Women need to be more educated about fibroid, it's killing lots of women in this country..doctors error or what?

Linda, a fibroid operation is a routine procedure. A woman should not die from it. I suspect that the surgeon was incompetent.

When done with a laparoscopic myomectomy (surgery to remove fibroids) is VERY routine here in the US... I used to work in a hospital and women came in all the time for this procedure. They stayed in the hospital two days at the most before being discharged home.

I'm not sure if she had it done this way but either way unless something else was going on here, Mrs. Ekeocha should not have died from this surgery. God rest her soul... This is so sad...

I think doctors took out too much at a go. My best friend died after the surgery 4 years ago. This is so sad.

Fibroid ke? NO it isnt fibroid that kills it is ignorance about its management that kills. Women, dont ignore any signs your body gives you and if possible insist on an operative hysteroscopy except if its soooo big you have to be cut open. This is available in Nigeria now. Maybe she bled during the surgery and the bleeding couldnt be stopped. African Women above 30 years should have an abdominal scan and cervical swabs at least once every 2 years to prevent cancer and to enable see any changes before it becomes so bad. As Africans especially during the child bearing years and early menopause, we are more predisposed to fibroids even though they sometimes go undetected. I didnt know I had them until i did a scan for something else.

Linda, what a misinformed post?

I beg too much talk talk. Why do we talk about what we know nothing about? Incompetence, routine procedure, laparascopic myectomy, hospital worker, etc... Does any of you know what happened during the surgery?

If you have undergone surgery the doctor will tell you of the possible risks that can occur during or after...even "simple' caesarean. I am referring to surgery abroad self. A friend in good health went to the States for a fibroid operation and it was successful. Eight hours later she developed a blood clot in her lungs and died. The cause of death was pulmonary embolism. Please stop jumping to conclusions about what you do not know. She died that is all we know. Over sabi commentators.

Thank you jo Sakara for your more balanced comment. What silliness.
May her soul rest in perfect peace.

IM SO SAD! i heard it this morning. OMG, this woman would ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS make me laugh by playing the crazy mother in law or the over-concerned mother. she was DAMN GOOD AT IT. i would place her in the league with Patience Ozokwor in terms of playing Nigerian mommy roles. OMG, IM GOING TO MISS HER SO MUCH!

REST IN PEACE!!!!

Kemiismyrealname, I believe when your sister got to the states, she couldnt tell them much about her health and family history. Even though risks cant be removed, they aim to make it as low as possible. there are people who have blood clotting issues dut to other underlying conditions and hence sometimes require blood clotting agents or blood thinning agents after surgery. I believe the surgery was done without really knowing her. I live in england and I have had this procedure done so I know what i m saying. They asked for even your family history and little details like having a tooth filling or a wonky tooth, small as that may seem, so that they can monitor you correctly before it all goes wrong.
Unfortunately, the average nigerian knows very little about the health history of their ancestors or parents. There are women who should never have a particualr kind of pain releive for example, but they dont know anything about themselves or their parents.
If you have to go abroad for surgery, do enough research back home in naija about any underlying conditions e.g high blood pressure, asthma, allergies, etc. most complications are due to underlying conditions the cardiologist who puts you under and the surgeon who does the surgery may not know about.

RIP to this lovely lady. It's so hard to lose a loved one and my heart goes out to her loved ones.

EVERY surgery carries a risk, no matter how routine it is. The family can ask for a report or get an autopsy done to verify the cause of death. Every time you let someone open you, you must be prepared for all possibilities. It's not even the surgery itself that kills at times, but the anesthesia. That's why they let you sign a waiver before going into surgery, so you acknowledge that you are aware of the risks involved.

Ada said...

Linda unfortunately every surgery even done in the US places a person at risk for complications. The sad thing in Nigeria is that that rate increases as a result of the lack of proper care such as avoiding blood clots, infections as a result of no real standards. Like stated above in some cases, its better when a woman is past child bearing age, to just do a hysterectomy. This can be beyond the surgeon's care, as in it can occur with lack of care post op, which the surgeon is not supposed to handle.
I say this as a doctor in the US.

May her soul rest in peace and may God give her loved ones the strength to remain strong.

Many people die from fibroids for different reasons. Lack of adequate information as a result you go to any Dr. I had the surgery 4 months ago, i wanted to go to India but i was advised there were very good doctors here. i met with one we discussed options and all i got a 2nd opinion. it went well in 5 days i was home and two weeks i was back to work.

When a sound comes from the forest, be it the right or wrong signal, it deserves a thought.
No matter how naturally explicable these deaths in nollywood may be, we can't rule out a smoke from a ghanian fire.

Kemiismyrealname said...

Nothing happened to my sister o!!!!!!! Read comments well. I said FRIEND!!!! Sakara commented that she had a sister.

As I said earlier anon @12.01 How do you know what she told her doctors? Do you know whether the doctor has been her doctor for years? Why should you believe anything when you DO NOT know anything about the situation? Nigerians with our too much talk, talk. We sabi book pass bookshop!!!!

Most people who comment are only giving their opinion and so since it is just an opinion, read over what you write so you make sense!!!!!!!

i had my second baby in december 2010 thru cs again but since then i ve been feeling some pains in my tummy and my tummy is still big like i'm 6months pregnant. doctors say it could be becos i'm breastfeeding or that d fibroid is bk.anyhow it is all i know is dat im not removing any fibroid again lailai.God forbid bad thing.same doctor also told me when i stop breastfeeding, the pains will go as it could be my hormones reacting to something.

@Kemiismyrealname,

Like you said, most people are giving there opinion INCLUDING YOURSELF. So, kindly stop insulting those who are simply airing their concern for the departed. You are the one that sounds silly if you really want to know. Who made you the gatekeeper of opinions anyways?

Like someone said, when Nigerians go abroad for medical treatment, they lack knowledge of family and personal medical history and this can prove fatal. Also,Nigerians seeking treatment abroad often seek treatment at an advanced stage of disease, which is not good especially for cancers. Nigerians overwhelmingly do not engage in preventative health care, which I believe is part of a lack of maintenance culture of their environment and themselves and partly of the lack of a comprehensive health care system.

In the US, yearly physicals are encouraged and many employers (especially jobs that involve vulnerable populations such as children) require physicals as a condition of keeping your employment including blood work, TB testing, STD/STI testing in some jobs and follow up if something comes up. This saves millions of lives and reduces the probability of epidemics. Also, yearly gynecological check ups are encouraged and women can get pap smears to test for abnormal cells in the cervix (and to treat cervical cancer at the earliest stage).

I do not believe that doctors are GOD, but GOD also gave us brains and we shoudl use it. It is important to minimize the risk of mortality or injury. And yes, I agree that people do die after surgery despite all precautions and having the most skilled surgeons.

However, if the deceased were your loved one, I am certain that you would not rest it with the explanation that people die from surgery in spite of having the best surgeon and taking all precaustions. You would want to know exactly what happened and will explore all options.

I have never heard that fibroid killed any woman in the UK. Maybe she should have had the operation in a foreign country like USA, UK, France or Germany. May she RIP? In Nigeria, we have very good physicians but lack of modern medical equipments.

Anonymous said...

@Kemiismyrealname and sakara, did your family see a US based lawyer for advice? The cause of death may have been the negligence of the doctors like Anonymous at 12:01AM pointed out.

In the UK, it is rear for a woman to die after a fibroid operation. Once, a young Nigerian woman died after a simple fertility operation. It was shocking because it had never happened before and was reported by the British media.

Anonymous said...

@abisola, OMG! I really pity you. Some women who have had fibroid problems normally avoid eating certain foods afterwards. They also detoxify themselves from time to time with a range herbal tea(s).

It is assumed that the fibroid feeds on these foods e.g gari or eba. It sounds like rubbish doesn't it? If you can, go organic and see a homeopathic doctor.

still on anonymous and kemiismyrealname debacle, please please please, you guys need to stop talking as if people don not die after surgery in the developed world..western doctors dont know everything o,and just like someone said her friend died of pulmonary embolism after myomectomy, that is possible anywhere please....if you are not a healthcare professional stop spreading false information all over the place like you are a chief of surgery in england or yankee where you live...i hate that habit in nigerians,we bliv once you have lived aborad for jus 3months na u sabi everything about everything, even if na burger u dey serve for burgerking while u dey there....abeg o....for ur info,i am a doctor,i work abroad and yes...people die here too after surgery....wait until the autopsy report is out,you might be surprised what killed her may even be unrelated to this surgery at all....dont demonise naija doctors, there are bad doctors everywhere, justlike there are good doctors everywhere....may the soul of the faithful departed rest in peace, amen

somebody even said a fibroid operation is a routine procedure, can u imagine fa??????do u know how complex a myomectomy is????u neva do one,i doubt if u have ever even watched one,yet u label it a routine procedure, like coparing it to pedicure or retouching your hair.....na wa for nigerians o!!!!no gynecologist worth his onions will ever refer to a myomectomy as a routine procedure, not even if he has been doing it everyday for the last 100years!mschew!

l do like this forum with both ignorant and knowledge people abt the disease express our view.
Fibroid is a benign growth in women expecially africans, it is called the woman becomes pregnant by itself if you fail to get pregnant. Fibroid removal becomes necessary when the symptoms becomes unbearable and one ones to get pregnant and the location of the fibroid is blocking your fertility. If anyone dies from fibroid surgery it is basically a complication factor like anesthesia, embolism, infection etc.
Our african doctors are good but our hospitals lack measures to prevent post-operative complications which is the main reasons why we usually lose our love ones.
Also, due to the number of patients alocated to each doctor, proper diagnoses and history is not taken which gives all the glues to avoid complications.
We need to address this situation much more even though is better than years ago.
It is really sad to hear this as l had this surgery done in 2007 in usa here and am good.
l am training to become RN and the things am studying is more than l could say in african will be the responsibility of a doctor, but our goal is PATIENTS CARE AND SAFETY. Therefore we need the resources to address all this issue.
Considering pregnant women ready to deliver lying on the floor because there is no bed, infection is number one and others follows.
May her soul rest in perfect peace and we will do better to avoid future tragedy.

I got married to my lovely husband for the past 7 years without conceiving and fibroid was the issue, i took different prescribed medication but could not cure it but my husband was so confident in me and kept encouraging me that one day someone would call me mother, we did not rest searching for solution from different Doctors all they could say was surgery and i was afraid of that then a friend in my office introduced me to Dr. Leonard who sent his product to me which i took and it really worked perfectly, and my Dr. confirmed me pregnant after 2 months of taken his product. i gave birth to a BABY GIRL three months ago and i named her TESTIMONY. contact him also at drleonard288@gmail.com.
