Why is it a big deal that an American learnt how to speak Yoruba? Lots of foreigners speak Nigerian languages and we Nigerians do speak other countries languages. I am a Nigerian of Igbo extraction, i went to University in Mexico, have Diploma in spanish, learnt it within three months before proceeding for my major which is science. I read, write and speak spanish fluently. Yes we can congratulate him for learning the language or admire his determination but not worship or make it look like he did something impossible.

But, when you talk about dialect languages like Yoruba, where you can have the same spelling for same words but it's said differently because of the accent put on it. You can easily twist your tongue to say English words but as an English speaker to twist to Yoruba, it's harder. I am impressed. It's easier to learn other languages if you already speak a language. My latina friend lived in Nigeria for a year and speaks Yoruba fluently because she speaks spanish. That's why I don't get too surprise when some Lebanese speak fluent hausa.
Asian language is another difficult one because it's so many characters. So, when i hear my naija brodas and sistas who speak Japanese or chinese fluently, I am very impressed.

That being said, kudos to the guy on his fluency. There are a lot of non-nigerian women married to nigerian men who learned their husbands languages because their mother in laws couldnt speak english.

One of our biggest problem with Nigerians is we complain about everything and finally when we get some recognition we complain again. Even, if they mean bad, it can still turn to something good too. Let's also learn to appreciate....
