After Bakassi, Cameroun Moves To Claim Obudu • It’s An Empty Threat - Cross River Government.

STILL basking in the euphoria of the ceding of Bakassi Peninsula to it through the World Court ruling at The Hague in 2002, indication has emerged that Cameroun has perfected plans to claim the ownership of Obudu Cattle Ranch Resort in Obanliku Local Government Area of Cross River State. However, the Cross River State government has described such claims as an empty threat, saying “it can never happen, because it is a day dream.”

Reacting to the development in Calabar, on Tuesday, the Director-General of the Cross River State Border Communities Development Commission (SBCDC), Mr Leo Aggrey, said the matter was still considered an unsubstantiated rumour by the state government.

According to Aggrey, “the Camerounians are threatening to take over the Obudu Ranch Resort, the Cross River State tourism haven. This is quite surprising and we are not treating this matter with levity. I have already forwarded a memo to the state governor, Senator Liyel Imoke, concerning this new threat.”

He, however, described the development as an “empty threat” as anything serious on that would have been decided at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) at The Hague ‘’as was the case with the oil-rich Bakassi.’’

Aggrey, who noted that the nation’s loss of Bakassi to Cameroun was painful in terms of potential revenue from the area and the displacement of Nigerians resident in the area, maintained that “the state government would not fold its arms and allow Obudu Cattle Ranch to be illegally claimed again.”

On Bakassi, Mr Aggrey said the state government had continued to accord priority attention to the needs of the displaced Bakassi people in respect of their plight, stating that a number of projects had been outlined for them to cushion the effects of their relocation.

The DG said although the State Emergency Management Agency(SEMA) had addressed certain needs of the displaced persons, a lot more needed to be done to assuage them, stressing that his commission had outlined areas of priorities and needs that the government was poised to address for the displaced.

‘’Bakassi matter is a creation of the partition for Africa. And the Cross River State government is very passionate about the Bakassi people and the boundary areas of the state,’’ Aggrey added.

Most of you are speaking out of ignorance...
Have any of you ever looked at the colonial map of nigeria?
I am Cameroonian and i understand the trauma that may be in living in one place and assuming the identity of the locals and then 70 years later being told that you do not belong anymore... Just some of you forget that these people were cameroonian originately and the area disputed were on the map of cameroon handed to the brits by the UN and somehow were never returned when they handed it back. Til today, lots of cameroonians of the english part have their families split across the nigerian border.
The current cameroonian minister of justice vilage is split between nigeria and cameroon and a lot of his detractors like to say that he was born on the nigerian side of the border... Just to say that a lot of the push to bring back whatever portion of cameroon was not return is often supported by those people who feel that their nationality/ patriotism will always be challenged by history or geography. Some of them are asking for independance from Both Cameroon and Nigeria (rings a bell?)because they feel excluded from the exploitation of their region's ressources...
If we are going to talk about things then why not inform ourselves first before saying cameroon this or cameroon that...
Because the feelings you are having now, cameroonians have been dealing with for over 50 years...
Hint: Ask any nigerian over 60 about the times southwestern cameroon was a part of nigeria...

Anom 4:29..I am a trained Intl Lawyer.. You just made a case against Cameroon. South Cameroon used to be part of Nigeria, and I believe should be given back to Nigeria.

Yes I know about geographical history of Southern Cameroon. I have family members on the side of Cameroon. They have been discriminated against by the French speaking population of Cameroon and will not mind coming back to Nigeria. Southern Cameroon used to be part of Nigeria. If Cameroon wants Obudu Cattle Ranch, they have to compensate Nigeria for the cost of maintaining and developing that land. In addition, the cost of bringing investments to the land. Trust me, we are not going to take this sitting down. I understand the issue of Bakassi. It didn't belong to us. President Paul Biya and his cohorts will pay thru their noses to get that land back and will compensate us for a lifetime.

France has vested interest in Obudu and Bakassi. They want to invest in those areas for their interest. The reason you won the Bakassi issue is because France was behind the entire verdict in the Hague. They want oil desperately and used Cameroon to get it. The question you should ask is why France is pushing Cameroon to grab lands. France's economy is bad and need oil desperately. So they are behind the scenes. Nigeria should wake up and prepare themselves for a long legal battle.

Biya has set his eyes on Obudu and wants it. Cameroon needs money and Obudu is a huge tourists attraction. It is all about money. He has a huge team of International Lawyers working on this issue. Nigeria should not give up Obudu and wake up from our slumber!

Only a white-based court,i.e., the Hague, can command a black nation, i.e., Nigeria to hand over land and actually expect and get compliance. Nigeria allowed itself to be humiliated. Colonial boundaries my foot. I wonder if the USA would obey a command from the Hague to hand over Texas to Mexico.

Mr international lawyer,
Nigeria was a colony of england whereas cameroon was never one. The Uk got a mandate from the UN over half of cameroon and for "administrative" reason put it under the adminstration of their then colony "Nigeria"; the mandate ended and they kept some of it because they did not think they'll lose nigeria... so when nigeria becomes indepedant they claim a part that was not part of their original territory which maps disprove. That is why Nigerian are the only one to think that southern cameroon was part of nigeria... Southern cameroon was never a part of nigeria because it never belonged to the brittish empire.. it was a UN mandate; The UN mandate clearly defines the territory to be temporarily administered by whom and when it was supposed to be relinquished:It's like the US claiming Haiti just because the UN has given them a mandate to act there. That is where the violation started. That is why Nigeria has been loosing this battle. The Uk did not have any right to alter the maps of a country already in the UN.That is also why Cameroon is the only african country south of the sahara where independance is not celebrated but reunification because we were broken down and reunited. Had the french pulled what the Brit pulled there would be no cameroon today. because they could have attached parts to Tchad, RCA or congo. But NO there was a Mandate.
And if you want to talk about the treatment of the english speaking population in Cameroon I would like to inform you that they do not suffer at all they want to be in power when they are barely 20% of the population. English is equally a national language as french anthough they are les than 20%. they have more schools and hospitals per habitants than the french region. they held the national assembly for almost 40 years and the prime minister is always an anglophone. If you want to argue dont go on hearsay when facts are there... The hague will continue to rule against nigeria on those claims for all territories belonging to cameroon on the original maps. That is why and how bakassi was lost. Cameroon does not need to fight a physical war.Nigerian officials should have explained it to their people instead of making it seem like there is a greedy neighbor trying to still oil filled land... By the way I happen to be from one of these regions that were attached to nigeria then returned.

Mr or Mrs. Anom,

You are not going to win this battle. If you do , Cameroon will have to compensate us for the cost of maintaining and improving Obudu. It is our right to claim compensation because it cost money to bring investors and make it a tourist attractions. For crying out loud, who created those maps? The maps never existed before the Europeans started exploitating us! Maps are created by men not God. Those maps were created to exploit us. We didn't have borders or boundaries . Your argument have lots of flaws. Do you think Mexico can claim parts of Texas or California back from the U.S? You and I know it is not possible! Cameroon needs to develop their country and lands and stop trying to steal developed lands back. Your country is going thru the same issue with oil rich Eq. Guinea.

Don't you understand your country is disrupting people's lives! We will all meet in Court or go to war. On our dead bodies, you are taking Obudu. You think you can step on the lion twice and get away with it. LOL!

Conflict between African nations perpetuated by white countries is getting frustrating. A black country, with backing from a white nation, creating conflict against another black neigbouring country for the sake of greed and envy . I don't get it! Are Africans stupid or what??? Also, Lisa is not a man but a Woman, so it is Mrs INTL Lawyer!

do they want the ranch for themselves? from all the places ALL up and down the border, the small chunk of Obudu is what they want? why?
