Lagos state govt to employ 1000 graduates as bus conductors, puts them on N50k salary

Lagos state Ministry of Transportation in conjunction with the Bus Conductors Association of Nigeria, BCAN, plans to employ 1000 graduates as bus conductors in the state. President of BCAN, Comrade Israel Ade Adeshola said their association and the state government is working towards making the Bus Conducting profession one for only trained bus conductors and also make it more lucrative and attractive.
In an interview with Vanguard, Adeshola said
"Presently Lagos state government through the Lagos State Drivers Institute, LASDRI is training and accrediting conductors in the state, adding that after the training the graduands would be employed as Bus Conductors and would be on the payroll of the government with a salary worth of N50,000 per month. The objective is to make the job of bus conducting attractive, respected and dignified as obtainable globally”.

Equivalent of £100 per month. Is this really the change APC and Buhari promised? to reduce graduates to bus conductors. Means no hope for School Cert. and First School Leaving Certificates holders. Would the governor please reserve one of these lucrative positions for one of his own sons too. Nigerian politicians are having a laugh because they are ruling over a bunch of people who has methodically been divided along religious and ethnic lines, rendered powerless, fighting themselves instead of coming together to kick out the common enemy, the politicians.

Let me ask this seemingly space age question - why do we need conductors on any commuter bus in 2016?

The dumbest initiative a government could ever come up with...Dear Lord. How about building industries and developing our unused natural resources into industrial enterprise.hence, creating a viable employment for GRADUATES/Youth. Training individuals to become a bus conductors should be an initiative that benefits people with no degree, that way, there is something available for pretty much everyone at different levels. #Ourleadersneedstotakeboldersteps.

Which training did Oluomo obtain to become the Capone of Garages in Lagos?!

Rubbish ideas everyday.Come to think of it;which box are they going to be conducting as it is done"globally". Most of this our so-called leaders as so stupid and have no iota of leadership talent in them.what an idea from space!!!

What about those with jssce and ssce, they will train and employ them as what? Rubbish

This is just ridiculous...is this the best job they could find for them. How about employing them in the various ministries in the state.

Anonymous said...

How is that productive? You can put in 1000 graduate in a productive sector even if they are line staffs and get more results at the end of the day... The job conductors do are not jobs for graduate. It doesn't need special skill to let som1 into a bus. U can rather put 1000 taxi cabs on the road and partner with uber and u can get better returns. My opinion

Unknown said...

Ok. Seen and let's wait for the outcome.

Anonymous said...

He just provided job for jobless graduate but if you have better job for the jobless graduates you can start employing them.mumu like say it's not better than bring jobless.

Unknown said...

Better than being idle. Linda take note!

Anonymous said...

But seriously, considering the quality of graduates in Nigeria, I see nothing wrong in the job. I tried employing 'graduates' as my company's rep and I was so disappointed. Most of them failed the basic aptitude test. Bad handwriting, terrible English, some couldnt even answer a question as simple as 50% of 250,000 without a calculator. Even with a calculator, one of them still failed it. I shake my head for this country. Youths want money but no brains to work hard, no intellect in abundance like the 80s and early 90s when my kids were growing. So sad that even the govt can't do better

Anonymous said...

Linda, you no help matter at all. You would do your audience a great favor by simply changing the graphics of the Danfo bus to BRT. The job is meant for BRT/LAG bus and not Danforth bus.

Unknown said...

This is so cool....I've always known ambode will deliver. 50k for bus conductors! Even some white collar jobs don't pay dis much. Good move!

Linda's childhood friend said...

"Rubbish" is a generous word for this mad initiative. Conducting a bus does not improve GDP Oga ambode. Grow up. If you are reading this, please gather 1000 youths and open a farm settlement arraingment where they can grow crops and rear livestock and still have a settlement home. Say in epe, your hometown, or Ikorodu.

uniquechic said...

utter rubbish!!!! is there any skill needed to hang onto buses, call passengers and shout with hoarse voices???? ds is really sad..when govt can open vocation centers and train them into skilled workers like carpentry, electrician, tailors, barbers, hairdressers etc and dey will use that skill to get employment in places that dont require knowing the whos_and-whos....

The whole thing looks like going to school is a waste of time, money n energy,i think we go to school to provide jobs for lecturers as well in Nigeria, everything is going in circles becos there is no degrading jobs dat graduates are not doing again

They should enrol the existing conductors for grooming/training. This is a further insult to Nigerian graduates and their educational institutions.

I will rather remain jobless than be a bus conductor. What nonsense! So i spent millions of naira paying school fees in the university only to end up as a bus conductor with a salary of 50k? This had better be a joke. Rubbish!

What a shame on Lagos State, what a big shame on Nigeria!!! After going through the hell Nigerian youths go through to pass exams, gain admission, study under terrible conditions, graduate and get good humiliation for serving their fatherland with hopes of a brighter future, is this what they get for being born and bred in Nigeria, and located in Lagos. What an insult our the psyche of the Nigerian youth.

If I were the Lagos State Government, I would rather disburse N600,000 cash to each graduate to embark on entrepreneurial activities after signing them up with Fate Foundation or any other where they can learn basic principles of Business before setting out and I assure you that in 5-10 years time, Lagos State and Nigeria would be better off.

The Lagos State Government should rather employ experience Danfo bus drivers and train them to take of this responsibilities, while it concentrates on building future leaders in business and industry who would take over in the next generation. All these people demeaning our youths had great opportunities thrust at them during their time not this sort of insult. How many of them can comfortably allow their "abroad" returned children who serve their fatherland from overseas and only wear the NYSC uniform on Passing Out Parade days just to collect the Certificate, serve as bus conductors?

If I were any Lagos or Nigerian youth, I would rather focus on helping myself rather than wait for the government. They have eaten the future of our youths and have no concrete plans for them today or tomorrow. Haba, what has Nigeria degenerated into? How did we get here? What shameless insult is this?

Lagos and Nigerian graduates are intelligent and if given the same opportunities and conditions as their counterparts, can achieve even far better. How can I develop my brain and you wake to employ me for N50,000? What can that buy in the local grocery market of today? How much is the shoe on government officials legs, how much do they spend on their girlfriends, mistresses and concubines? We are talking of men and women in the prime of their youth, who should be thinking of settling down in marriage and raising a family for crying out loud? Who will save Nigeria from this mess?

The incumbent Governor is a product of the Hubert Humprephrey Fellowship, did he get that on the platform of menial jobs? What is the crime of our youths? Is it a crime to be born and located in Nigeria? Is it when all our youths relocate abroad that reality will set in for our leaders? You flaunt affluence and ask them to drive buses to survive, they will but be assured that very soon, all armed robbers will be certificate carrying graduates... Selah
