Photo: 20yr old girl arrested by Cross River State police for selling her 2 week old baby for N20k

Maria Ekanem sold her two week old baby to an Abuja-based woman for N20,000. According to a report by Vanguard, the 20-year-old school drop out from Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State, was arrested by the police along with her accomplices.

Her boyfriend got her pregnant and asked her to abort the baby. However, a doctor agreed to help her with free antenatal care and food and in exchange she agreed to sell her baby after delivery.

Paraded along with Ms Ekanem were the medical doctor, Okokon Offiong Okohon,55, the proprietor of Evangel Clinic,of 2, Atu Street, a 70-year-old matron of Sadatoe Maternity located at Umoh Street and a nurse.

Maria Elemi, a Senior Secondary School student of NYSC Demonstration School, Calabar, leaked the plan to sell the baby to the police.

"When I came back from school on Monday, Maria told me she wanted to take the baby to the parents of the boy who impregnated her since she can no longer cope with taking care of the baby," said Miss Elemi, whose parents Maria Ekanem was living with after delivery.

Maria Ekanem gave the baby to the matron when they got to Inyang Street in Calabar South. The matron in turn handed her to the buyer.
"The woman gave Maria N20,000 and asked her to pay the nurse at the Evangel Clinic and use the rest for herself."

Miss Elemi became suspicious when the driver of the SUV told the woman with the baby that her husband said she should take her to the airport to catch a flight to Abuja.

"I started wondering why they should take the girl to the airport when the boyfriend to Maria and her parents live here in Calabar," Maria stated.

Cross River Police Public Relations Officer, ASP John Eluu, who paraded Maria along with the doctor and Matron, said detectives swung into action and arrested the suspects immediately information got to them at the Federal Housing Police Station.

Eluu added that investigations is currently ongoing to apprehend the woman who bought the baby.

Poverty didn't make you stop having sex or close ur legs to sex? U sold your baby cos u wanted a reason not to have him/her. Why didn't you go thru the right channel for adoption!!! Also, I hope the person that bought the child wants to raise him/her and not for ritual purposes?

Is it a crime to have surrogate? NPF that is swinging into action, will they take care of the girl and her baby?
They should legalise this surrogacy in Nigeria and designate some clinic to handle it.

Unknown said...

Both the buyer and seller are wicked. What would the buyer tell the baby. I bought you for 20,000.

Unknown said...

OMG!

CyberWraith said...

But she is the owner of her baby. Are they the one to take care of the Baby if she kept it?
I don't understand all this rubbish!

LEGALIZE ABORTION IN NIGERIA! PERIOD!!!

It is sad that a lot of young girls are practicing unprotected sex despite the health consequences of which pregnancy is the least of them.
Were is sex education in our schools these days. Too much exposure to western culture has made us look promiscuous, govt has to work through the min of women affairs to counsel these young unwed mothers and put up their babies for adoption so that a significant amount of money can be put up by the adoptive parents to improve the life of these often times poverty striken/idle girls

Dat doc nd d Abuja-based woman r ezigbo ndi-arurala. Kai! things dat happen wen u av no value for urself. Dis isn't poverty at all, it is low self esteem.

There's no justification for selling your child for 20k. The health care officials that encouraged her are nothing but wicked and manipulative... The buyer is evil as well for agreeing to buy a child for 20k... Even a cow is way more expensive. Ridiculous !

This story is a very big fabricated lie... The true story is that the so called "Miss Maria Ekanem, a school dropout, who got pregnant by her boyfriend some years back, went to Evangel Specialist Clinic at Atu str., Calabar to deliver her baby. Since she had no money, the good doctor, Dr. Okokon Offiong Okoho delivered her of her first baby. She never paid any hospital bills, but was given free treatment all thanks to the good Doctor, Dr. Okokon Offiong Okoho, who has forever been kind to many ... A few years later, she came back pregnant again and met the good doctor who referred her to a Traditional birth clinic at Umon Street due to the high cost of medical care at Evangel Specialist clinic. The good Doctor Usually helps this clinic at Umon when they have difficulties in birthing children. He has worked for Over twenty years and is earning his pay, a Father, Mentor and Friend to many, He has helped so many orphans and assisted many people in many humane ways possible, so I see no reason why He would even be mentioned in a case like this.. All this 'Cock and Bull' stories were made up. Today's Police Officers will support the sentence of the innocent, provided they get a promotion and breakthrough in the Police force due to personal reasons (Corruption, Greed and Tribalism to be precise). That is the problem we have in the Police force today. Even if the suspects are found to be 'Not-guilty', The Police will go an extra mile to implant false stories and evidences to win cases and receive praises. The level corruption in Nigeria is very high! This is how many innocent people are sentenced to Jail time, death or life imprisonment based on false stories and evidence! God help Nigeria!

She obviously doesn't have the emotional and financial capacity to care for the child. Does Nigeria have any organizations that deals with adoption as regards to the mothers? What is expected of her?
I pray Nigeria looks into issues such as adoption there will be reduced abortions N such. Also we need to educate teenage girls on birth control N our young men on condom use. If people should be sexually active they should also be educated

Anonymous said...

Is there a right channel for adoption in Nigeria?
