Dear LIB readers: who should get my tithe - The Church or the poor?

From a female LIB reader
Good day LIBers, please I need advice on this. ‎About two months ago, it suddenly entered my mind to give my tithe to disabled people on the road. I gave part to a blind man and the rest to a deformed person, and though their gratitude at such an amount made me self conscious, it felt so right giving it to them. The Bible says we should give it to the Church, but these less fortunate are God's children, right? And as the song goes, "whatsoever you do, to the least of my brothers, you do onto me". I asked my boyfriend and he said my tithe should go no where else but straight to Church. Please advise.

God is a Good God. you must distinguish properly your giving, to God its called Tithe, to Needy its called arm-deeds and so on, Your giving must be calculated, to God it must be done in faith else you wont please Him, You give to have ideas to create wealth. To the Needy there are blessing involved. But dont think you are richer than the beggers on the streets, here in the North beggers are having more than 3 houses collecting rents constantly.

Your shd go to the church. What d church does with it is not really ur business. Just make sure u have done ur part. Obedience by honoring the Lord with the 1st 10% of ur income. Pls read Matt 23:23. You must not ignore the poor though. God bless you.

'the bible says bring all the tithe to my house so there may be food in my house'. dont disturb yourself of who to give. your tithe is meant for the sound church of God.

Anonymous said...

follow the bible and give to the church......you can give money to the needy also but not your tithe

Unknown said...

U have to understand what is the meaning of tithe 1st. Tithe is that part of your income that God has instructed you to bring into His house which is the church. So you must carry out that instruction first and as well help the poor. It is biblical give to cesar what belongs to cesar and to God what belongs to God.....

Whatever that is in your heart is what you're going to do at the end of the day. If God call your heart to give to the church you would have done so... It doesn't matter who you give too in this life just make sure is coming from a good place.... You can give to the church all you want but if your heart is not clear God will never bless you....👌

Let the church give to me. What I do with it is not the church's business but GOD'S. After all I am created in the image of God. Some of you idiots amaze me. No wonder you continue to perish in poverty while your scammer man of God enjoys his private jet.

Anonymous said...

God forbid I give my money to any church.

mariposa said...

your tithe is not even yours to give to the poor,it's a command by God;malachi 3:10, there are different avenues you can use to reach out to the poor

Anonymous said...

Even though the 'church' spends the tithe money on personal jets? How is dat going to make the world a better place? I will gather d poor into a house and call it CHURCH!

Anonymous said...

what DE Church does with tithe is my business. with some kind advance thiefs fronting dem self to be Men of God. damnnnn I can serve God my self.

Unknown said...

Ever thought of giving 20% instead of ten? 10% could go into the store house of God, the other 10% to the less privileged. It not easy but Remember 'you reap what you sow' You don't have to limit yourself to the 10%.

Bible doesn't say pay your tithe to church. It says pay your tithe to the Levite, the stranger, the fatherless, and widow...(deut 26vs 12.) Now the levite are divided 4
Priests
1. Descendants of Kohath through Aaron and his sons
ritual functions, packing of the sacred articles for transport by the non-priest Kohath Levites
Non-Priests
Unlike the priests, who not only engaged in specific rituals within the Tabernacle system but were physically permitted to approach the sacred articles; the functions of the non-priest lineages of Kohath, Gershon and Merari was restricted and limited to being the support personnel for the Tabernacle. This included the on-going maintenance, disassembly, transport, and erecting of the structure and compound area.

2. Descendants of Kohath through Izhar, Hebron and Uzziel - carrying of the sacred articles
responsible for carrying the sacred articles on their shoulders once packed up and covered by the priests
3. Descendants of Gershon - fabrics
responsible for all the fabrics, coverings, and partitions* of the Tabernacle and compound area
(excluding the *fabric partition between the Holy and the Most Holy compartments which was used to by the priests to cover the Ark)
4. Descendants of Merari - structural components
responsible for the structural components of the Tabernacle and compound area. Dismantled, transported, and re-assembled the physical structure from location-to-location

IN CONCLUSION, TITHE DOES NOT STOP YOU FROM MAKING HEAVEN AS FASTING DOES NOT AFFECT GOD. JUST KNOW AND NOTE WHEN ANY GIVING INCREASE OR DECREASE YOUR LIFE. STICK TO THE ONE THAT WORKS.

MUCH LOVE LINDA

LINDA THIS POST IS NOT EVEN SUPPOSE TO APPEAR ON UR BLOG. BUT ANYWAY, THERE IS NO TWO WAYS ABOUT IT, EITHER U STUDY UR BIBLE PROPERLY AND UNDERSTAND WHAT TITHE MEANS OR U TAKE IT FROM SOME GOOD CHRISTIANS WHO HAVE COMMENTED HERE.

PAY YOUR TITHES TO THE CHURCH, IT IS NOT UR BUSINESS TO WHAT THE TITHE IS BEING USED FOR, WHETHER THE PASTOR BUYS A JET, CAR, AEROPLANE OR BUILDS A NEW HOUSE THAT IS NOT UR BUSINESS.

FOR THE ASPECT OF THE POOR, THE BIBLE SAID IT ALL, U MUST GIVE TO THE POOR, SHARE FOOD WITH THE HUNGRY ONES, SHARE UR CLOTHES, SHARE THE SCRIPTURES WHICH IS EVEN MORE NECESSARY. MOST OF U HERE CLAIM TO GIVE TO THE POOR BUT HAVE U EVER SAT DOWN TO TEACH THEM THE WORD OF GOD SO THAT THEY CAN BE CHANGED?

IN CONCLUSION: YOUR TITHES BELONG TO THE CHURCH, ESPECIALLY THE CHURCH U WORSHIP AND U CAN DO OTHER THINGS BY GIVING. GIVE AND IT SHALL BE GIVEN UNTO U.

Tithe must go to the church first. Most churches have projects to help the poor and build schools, etc.

That means you should receive tithe too. Since your body is the temple of GOD, and it's the "house of GOD"
Am sure you can answer yourself right now

You can still give to the poor after giving tithe to church.
By the way, in which church does Bill Gates tithe?

Old Testament
"Tithe" means a tenth or 10 percent. The tithing system described in the Bible was designed specifically to meet the needs of the religious, economic and political system of ancient Israel. Each of the twelve tribes of Israel, except the tribe of Levi, initially received an allotment of land in the promised land of Canaan. The Levites were assistants to Israel's priests and were supported by a tithe offering from other eleven tribes. All families of those eleven tribes were to give a tenth of all produce, flocks, and cattle to the Levites. In turn, the Levites were to give a tenth of that to support the priests (Leviticus 27:30-33, Numbers 18:21-28). Tithes were also used to meet the needs of foreigners, orphans and widows. (Deuteronomy 26:12-13)

In addition, everyone was to be generous with those in need:

If there is a poor man among your brothers in any of the towns of the land that the LORD your God is giving you, do not be hardhearted or tightfisted toward your poor brother. Rather be openhanded and freely lend him whatever he needs. (NIV, Deuteronomy 15:7-8)

New Testament
There are several mentions of tithing in the New Testament (Matthew 23:23, Luke 11:42, 18:12; Hebrews 7:5-9), but all refer to the Old Testament system. The New Testament does not give any specific rules about tithing, and most aspects of the Old Testament Law do not apply to Christians. (See What Does the Bible Say About the Old Testament Law?)

Jesus seems to support the tithe in Matthew 23:23-24, but these verses are primarily intended as a criticism of the Pharisees as hypocrites who obeyed the letter of the law but not the spirit of the law. They were so meticulous about the law that they tithed even the small amounts of spices they grew in household gardens, but they ignored the more important matters of justice, mercy and faith!

However, Jesus made it clear that we are obligated to be generous to those in need (Matthew 25:31-46).

Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you. (NIV, Matthew 5:42)

Giving is to be done cheerfully, rather than as an obligation (2 Corinthians 9:6-7), and not for the purpose of public recognition (Matthew 6:1-4). The right amount to give may be more or less than ten percent, depending on one's circumstances (Matthew 19:21, Luke 18:22, 21:1-4, Hebrews 13:16, 1 John 3:17). Generous giving is an acknowledgment that everything we have is a gift from God, and is to be used in His service (Luke 12:33, Acts 20:35, 1 Timothy 6:17-19, James 1:17, 1:27, 1 Peter 4:10).

Rather than give a certain amount as an obligation, we are urged to share generously of whatever talents, abilities and wealth God has entrusted to us:

We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man's gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully. (NIV, Romans 12:6-8)

The problem here is that people are no longer mindful of the reason for giving their tithes. the first question you should ask yourself is why am i giving my tithe. I believe you do so in order to obey Gods word in Malachi which says we should bring our tithes to his storehouse.
Now i ask, what concerns us with what the money is used for??? there is a divine order from God and all we have to do as his children is to obey and completely eradicate thoughts of what the church or pastor does with the tithes. Every pastor of individual will be held accountable for by God himself for the usage of tithes from members. lets not do God's work for him.

Tithe was for the Levites. Are current Pastors and Priests descendants of Levi? Jesus, our great High Priest was never a Levite and did not request payment of Tithe neither did He commend His disciples to demand tithes when He sent them on their Missionary Journeys. Tithe was an injunction of the Old Testament and dies with the Old testament. It was an arrangement which God enunciated for the Hebrew Nation and not the whole world then but which the Jews repudiated and for which God sent them into Captivity. With the failure of the Old Testament, a new era of Grace came through Jesus Christ, with emphasis on love to God and your neighbour. Read:

Heb 7:11 It was on the basis of the levitical priesthood that the Law was given to the people of Israel. Now, if the work of the levitical priests had been perfect, there would have been no need for a different kind of priest to appear, one who is in the priestly order of Melchizedek, not of Aaron.
Heb 7:12 For when the priesthood is changed, there also has to be a change in the law.
Heb 7:13 And our Lord, of whom these things are said, belonged to a different tribe, and no member of his tribe ever served as a priest.
Heb 7:14 It is well known that he was born a member of the tribe of Judah; and Moses did not mention this tribe when he spoke of priests.

What does the Parable of the Samaritan teach you about Levites and Priests, the collectors of tithes? Apostle Paul wrote the bulk of letters in the New testament and not in one of his letters did he personally demand for tithes either for himself or any Church in Jerusalem or Judea. The letters on Christian Giving in the Acts, Romans, 1 Cor and 2 Cor. all indicate that Christian Giving is for the poor and the needy in Jerusalem and Judea.

In conclusion the dictum is: Any Giving that is motivated by the Law, is no Giving.

Any Giving that is motivated by Love, is True Giving.

Thanks For Your comment, now I understand way better now but one part I dont understand is where u said first 10% and not just 10%..i dnt understand.are you trying to say its the 10% of the first income ever or what? pls clarify

I've also thought about this but now that you ask the answer suddenly came to my mind. What is tithe first of all, it's you giving 10% of your earnings in appreciation and showing total trust to the one who provided the means to the money you now have. The beggars didn't provide you the job, some beggars are addicts and then you hand them 50,000 and they go and overdose on cocaine and die. Giving that huge sum of money to beggars is not in their benefit. It's best to give your tithe and offering to the church, leave God to judge the church and how the money is spent, while you face your own salvation. Ofcourse on top of giving tithe and offering you'll also help the less fortunate but not by giving one beggar 300,000 naira at once.

Tithe should be brought into the store house as God commanded. Alms and all other givings are free will and can be done however. But, Tithe should be offered in one's church.

As a matter of fact the Tithe was an arrangement God had with his people the Israelites to take care of the Levitical(Levites) class who were not allowed to work secularly except in the house of God, the alien resident and the fatherless child. But with the coming of Christ the Mosaic law was abolished Romans 10:4, Christ ended both the law of Sabbath and Tithe ting etc. Christ disciples didn't pay Tithe because it was not binding on them so are we today. Apostle Paul and others worked and supported their ministry. But the case is different today as so called men of God use it to enrich themselves. Why don't day worship on Saturdays in obedience to the Sabbath? apart from Presbyterians?

Nice one Neo. I always cite this too, catholics aren't instructed to pay tithes, yet they are the most successful Christians. Come to think of it, do we go to church to be successful? This penticostal crooks will never leave us alone.

James 1:27English Standard Version (ESV)

27 Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.
The important thing is in the principle of giving.
giving to the church (The Body of Christ, The gathering of the Brethren) you can pay your tithe to your fellowship or prayer group or St. Vincent De Paul or any group that you pray with or hear the word of God with or that practices "Pure Religion"

the real question is not about giving tithe, but about what the church use the tithe for. is it to buy jets and live luxurious lifestyles or to help the needy.

HELPING THE POOR IS VERY GOOD AND IMPORTANT BUT SHOULD ALSO UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ARMS GIVING AND TITHES, HELPING THE LEAST OF THOSE ONES OUT THERE AND ALSO PAYING YOUR TITHES AS WELL IN THE CHURCH BOTH ARE VERY IMPORTANT.

If its not take not taken to God's house then that is alms not tithe. The Bible never said take it to the less privileged. We cannot teach God what to do with HIS money. AFTER you tithe you can now go and help those People.
