NUC abolishes award of Pass Grade in Nigerian universities

The National Universities Commission ( NUC) has abolished the award of Pass Degree in Nigerian Universities with effect from the 2013/ 2014 academic session.

This decision was made known by the Vice Chancellor of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, Prof. Abdullahi Zuru during the school's 2014/2015 matriculation ceremony which held yesterday February 4th in Sokoto.

According to Prof Zuru, the grading system of students in the universities has changed.
“What this means is that the minimum pass mark for courses in the universities will now be 45 per cent, that is, D-grade instead of the previous 40 per cent which was E-grade while the minimum class of grade to be earned by the students will be now be Third Class,” he said.

Its good. How can a student pass through a university for 4-6 yrs and come out with a thirdclass talkmore of a pass.

Unknown said...

atlst inform of encouragement

Dave Mide said...

Lmao ... now so many students wont graduate on time as to reduce the amount of graduates being produced by universities yearly which in turns leads to reduction of mass unemployment. uhmmm

Anonymous said...

Hmmmm...third class.

dhobiz said...

Hmm okay but they should at least give certificate of attendance coz at all at all na im bad pass

Unknown said...

About time. But happens to those that couldn't get the Third Class grade? Will they spill over or withdrawn?

Very good ....will raise the standard. I'm a PG student in an Asian country.Minimum pass mark in my school is 60%. Anything below is a carryover. Don't know about other schools over here. I had to work extra to meet up since the grading system was quite stringent compared to my undergraduate.

Anonymous said...

Better for the students really because coming out with a 3rd class, not to even mention a pass is not good for the student's future. They would end up suffering more, employers don't want a 3rd class. Students will now feel the need to buckle up. Imagine some university graduates can't speak or write proper ENglish. Who knows, this may help to improve the crop of students our universities are churning out these days!

I bet u graduated with a pass. I see it as a good way to make students study harder. Bearing in mind that a third class is 50%, else they won't graduate. Bcuz doing MSc outside Africa, in the UK mostly, if u get a score less than 50% , u have failed. In order to graduate, all ur scores must b above 50%. This news is a good development .

Ok noted. I thank God I graduated with a 2nd class upper. Now after all d stress of reading and having good grades, are graduates actually compensated for their hard work? Where are the jobs? The rate of unemployment is so alarming, students are not encouraged anymore. I've seen pple who graduated wt just a pass, in top positions. They are even bosses to d ones wt first class. I'm not against d decision of d NUC. But my question is, to wat end? Students will become more serious and graduate with good grades, ok. What happens next? Roaming d streets without jobs, no capital to start their own businesses. As a nation, we've not gotten there, and I don't see us getting there in 50yrs. It's not a curse. As long as selfishness remains in d hearts of our leaders, Nigeria can't move forward. I wish d students the best!!!

@Jamea Udosen, I will soon be an MBA holder because I have learnt not to give up or stop believing in myself particularly when people like you utter stupid comments like that. I graduated with a PASS grade. Eventually, I realised my mistake but held on to my dream of becoming a great woman that the world will reckon with, I have worked and even had to change juicy jobs with this same grade. Need I add that I didn't have to sleep with anyone to get these jobs. Finally, I decided to develop myself and further my education and will compete soonest with other MBA holders. Today I can proudly say I own one outstanding company and more to come.
