How long will Nigerians remain fools? - By Etcetera

From Mr Soul musician turned controversial writer...enjoy!
In Nigeria, there are three classes of people: The Masses, The Politicians, and The Rich. The masses are the puppets, the politicians the hand that controls the puppets and the rich the hand that controls the politicians. The politicians have the system totally rigged in their favour.
They have made it compulsory for the masses to vote from a list selected by them knowing that as blind as the masses are, they may never realise they can actually have a choice. In the upcoming presidential election, the masses have been given no choice but to choose between two candidates forced upon them by the politicians.

What if Buhari and Goodluck Jonathan are not exactly what the masses want? Are we going to have recourse when they fail as they always do, to honour their promises?

There seems to be a spot in every Nigerian, a soft spot in our consciousness like the one in a baby’s head, which, if pressed or stroked in the right way, reduces us to giggling children with mouths full of candy. That spot is what I call a “Mumu Button.” And any person that finds and presses that mumu button in Nigerians is on the road to wealth and power. As a youth, my faith in this nation is disappearing like a fart in a wind storm. I have seen that even the most intelligent and educated Nigerians, when you press their mumu button, they turn into docile drooling puppy dogs, panting happily. Obviously, every politician in this country understands this, but for some reason, the masses don’t. My mumu button has been pressed many times too, but unlike many people, mine has become calloused due to misuse and abuse. But since I realised what the politicians are, they can’t press my mumu button anymore. I see politicians as conmen, I see them like those Ebonyi State boys trying to sell fake wrist watches to me in traffic, I see them like pastors. They are always too eager to sell their plans and schemes, to convince us that their government will bring “change,” and if we support their candidates, we will be led out of the darkness into light. And somehow in every election, an amazing number of us fall for it. We keep buying the scam over and over.

With Buhari and Jonathan, we have again swallowed the same con hook, line, sinker, rod, reel, creel, boat, motor, and even the river, down our throats like a starving dog would gulp a piece of rotten meat without sniffing it first. Why does Buhari want to be president so badly? Who is really financing Goodluck Jonathan’s N21 billion campaign and at what cost to the nation if he gets reelected? When will the masses pull their numbers on the streets and demand for the simple things of life? Are we ever going to stop rolling over our backs with our legs wide open like a prostitute waiting for her customer? With everything we see in the media, to be a successful politician depends on talk, or more precisely, smooth talk. The masses love smooth talk. It lulls us into some kind of euphoric state. With smooth talks, they have convinced most Nigerians that night is day, bad is good, and most recently, stealing is not the same as corruption.

It saddens me whenever I see a group of people arguing that Buhari is better suited for the presidency than Goodluck Jonathan or vise versa. Therein lies the con of all: can’t we see that both candidates are being financed by the same group of individuals? That’s right, the very same people. Whoever becomes the president on February 14 is still their choice. The elections are nothing but theatrical productions to keep us distracted and pacified so we won’t revolt and demand better government. To some of you naive souls who are still under the spell of all the jangbajantis they taught you in school, let me explain what election truly is in Nigeria: the next president will only get into office by playing ball with the likes of the Dangotes and other power brokers, and by telling you and me what we want to hear. I have heard things like, his running mate is a pastor, he is holy and credible. My friend, by the time anybody gets to be presidential material, he’s been bought ten times over.

Tell us, Mr Etcetera, what do we do? As both candidates have been shoved to us, do we reject them, all?
Do u want us to come out on d streets and revolt? Tell us.

BONARIO NNAGS said...

Asides GEJ and GMB,we have 12 other presidential aspirants to choose from. The reasons why we're pragmatically imbued to supporting just two candidates, thereby making it seem a two horse race,is best known to us.
But that aside, our quest of getting it right in Nigeria in terms of good leadership, with each new day seems a mirage. We taught our problem was the military,we had democratic government and yet no significant change,Oh! We complained our problem is because of the age of our leaders, and luckily we had a Goodluck Jonathan, a youth like us,one without shoe, one of us from a humble background, who at least from what he made us believe has experienced poverty first hand. Alas! He was no different from the old stock, who are continually in hot romance with corruption. And here we are again confused on who most deserves our vote.
My prayer is that come Feb 14th, may the voice of those who have transcended above limitations of ethno-religious sentiments speak loudest.

My dear etcetera, you write in vain. Nigerians are a stubborn set of individuals who hold on tenaciously to their views. Most also have views about their ethnic group that borders on delusions of grandeur. Ethnicity is also at play in these electons with some groups hell bent on regaining control of the political and financial structure of nigeria. The foolish masses will blindly follow the ethnic trail even though they wouldn't personally benefit. Bizarrely, the fact that their group will be once more in dominance is enough satisfaction for them - "better our thief stealing, than your thief".

Talking about someone putting people there for us, somehow, people always depend on others for certain things. We don't always have control over things that affect us: your parents somehow determine your religion, the people around you influence your tatste, just the same way political parties determine who their flag bearers are and we have to select from them who will rule us in which case we don't have an option but to select the best among them and in this case, if we defy sentiments, we'll agree it Buhari.

My question is when would the words of our teachers come alive when people like Buhari is still contesting for power?
As for GEJ, i am disappointed beyond words can explain.

Very reasonable and true. We know they are almost the same and have same origin but we feel we have no other option but either of them. Because even if you decide to support someone else aside those two,it wouldn't count as the rich or whoever decides the winner would only favour those two who would bring the highest turnover for them. Therefore, until the day(which would never come) the masses come together and bring out someone we would all support,it'd be the same story. Suppose this happens, the so called masses including etcetera would still sell themselves to the rich for the love of money and the cycle continues. That's the simple reason why we remain where we are.

It's not just two people contesting you know? It's a little sickening that majority of literate nigerians imagine that their fight for change is a transition from GEJ to GMB.

So we tell ourselves that we  have to choose between GEJ who has been president for 6 years and consistently failed Nigeria on the one hand, And GMB who has consistently struggled to be president within the last 12 years but failed in his entirety to help out in the nation in any capacity...so your knowledge of his ability is well limited to things he did over 20 years ago!

Sickening!! There's a list from inec of candidates! Who has looked at that list? Like really studied the list enough to see what those other presidential hopefuls might have to offer?

Instead we concern ourselves with the ones who are heavily sponsored by stakeholders forgetting that whether or not you scream integrity or not, politics is a business and anybody who is sponsored by the 'powers that be' has to pay back!

Setting ourselves up for yet another 4 years of a further downward spiral till 2019 when our kids are old enough to realise that we are in deep shit and the average nigerian is still heavily indebted to stupid and pointless party sentiments.

Olodo. You are just quick to write rubbish, read and understand. The masses comprise of the classes u just mentioned.

I love this dude! What he said is nothing but a bitter truth!

Steady on here!

I can't imagine any guy "cumming" because of etcetera. Unless the said guy is gay, in that case why insult etcetera after cumming when etcetera has so obviously given you pleasure?

Utter Rubbish! @anon 11:07

You dare to refer to a bunch of rabble rousers, corrupt politicians, political jobbers/turncoats and a bible basher as professionals? You are obviously deluded!!

' I see politicians as conmen, I see them like those Ebonyi State boys trying to sell fake wrist watches to me in traffic, I see them like pastors.
The elections are nothing but theatrical productions to keep us distracted and pacified so we won’t revolt and demand better government'.
You talk this one. Very correct.

U tried. But u dint make sense so much @etcetera. U were too busy trying to be sarcastic to make meaningful point. Buhari may not be much better than Jonathan, and they may indeed be funded by the same set of people. But isn't that how the world runs? Doesn't it also happen even in developed countries? Does that say that people should not vote? You have been given a choice, whether it's between the devil and the deep blue sea, you just must choose else u can't move forward. I don't know what purpose this rant serves cos it seems to me you are asking us not to vote. I have admired so many of your write-ups, but this one just sounds stupid!

Na wa o...my darling, the masses compasses of the middle class and the poor. Study more, you will understand better then you will stop seeing foolish idiots

But there are other candidates apart from JEG and GMB. If Nigeria really needs change, they should bring the remaining candidates to limelight and vote!

Anonymous said...

What do you have to say about the issue at hand...guess you are not a Nigerian

Remi said...

Etcetera, you echoed my thought. I've always insisted that choosing between GEJ and GMB is like choosing between the devil and the deep blue sea.

Nigeria and Nigerians deserve so much better than these two men. PDP fielded GEJ simply because he is an incumbent who feels he is entitled to a 2nd term by right, while APC fielded GMB because they are certain he will garner votes across the Northern states. By and large, the credibility and intellectual capability of the two men were not put into consideration. Nigerians are therefore left with no choice than to vote either of these two men or abstain which actually is still a vote in some sense.

I heartily pray we will get to the level whereby merit rather than religion, ethnicity, age, sex or party affiliation will be the sole yardstick to measure qualification of aspirants into political office.

God bless you Etcetera, may your ink never run dry and abeg hit the studio asap and cook up some melodious tunes for us. 'Michelle' and 'Love Should Last' are still on my playlist and your last single, 'No Virgin In Lagos' is nice and funny.

I agree with Etc. on many levels! Why must it be either GEJ or GMB? Is there no one else? It's like we have been boxed into a tight corner and it doesn't matter who we vote for, we just may not get the desired change for the better that we earnestly need in Nigeria...On another note, Etc. the reference to Ebonyi boys is so uncalled for. Nigerians should learn to put aside tribal and state sentiments in our daily lives, especially in very formal settings which we want others to take seriously

Dumb question if you ask me....its obvious he is in the category of good governance...hope you now understand

He is doing his work, which is write article, publishers pay for it. So he is gainfully employed.

Etcetera. He took the words right out of my mouth. I have no soft spot for any of these politicians. None of them are worth it....

Bonario, I always thought you were like those who make uneducated comments here simply bcos ur name seemed to pop up very often until I started reading your comments. Thumbs up

Condemnation without proffering a solution... that's what this write up is all about! What is Etcetera's suggestion? He just spent the whole ink on criticising both parties. Incomplete write up.
