15 soldiers get 4yrs imprisonment for refusing to fight Boko Haram

15 Nigerian soldiers who refused orders from their superior to go to the war front and fight members of the insurgency group, Boko Haram in Adamawa state recently, were yesterday September 17th sentenced to 4 years imprisonment by a military court that sat at the 23rd Armoured Brigade in Yola in Adamawa state.

The sentenced soldiers who had been in detention for over three weeks were convicted on charges ranging from insubordination, dereliction of duty and refusal to undertake order assigned to them in the war against the sect members.

Why would they go and fight when the are ill equipped for battle, and even when the die, their entitlements will not be payed to their families. Anyway its a much better sentence than death.

What is going to happen to their families now? Army wives usually depend solely on their husband's income. Sad though.

Bad judgement... 4 years of lounging while others take a battering or yet still get killed. By the time their sentence has run its course either Boko Haram has successfully overun parts of Nigeria or a peaceful settlement has been reached. Either way they come out tops.

The army authorities should be weary of sending the wrong signals.

This country is in a deep shit! People of Timber & caliber together with human right associations needs to voice out to condemn a lot of injustice and crazy decisions that we are engulfed in.

Recent developments clearly shows how the privileged see others in this country. There should be a check to all these "useless military judgment".

The combatant are the "true heroes" of Nigeria, they should be better treated and timely rewarded for their sacrifices. And I think it's high time a body is set up to check the excesses of the "senior boys" in the military, who hide under the camouflage of charges like 'mutiny' to maltreat and rob the junior ones. We still have some of them languishing in jail for protesting against their entitlement that were denied of, after an ECOMOG mission.

Who is auditing all the mismanaged budget allocations assigned to our security every year? The Nigeria military is ill-equipped, the "senior boys" embezzle the monies with impunity. I hope the stupid oppression going on within the military structure will not begin to backfire very soon and the so called 'senior boys' will pay dearly for it.

Couldn't we learn and copy how the civilized world (US, UK) treat their soldiers, from kit-ups to welfare packages and so on?

The simple truth is that Black race is too "Oppressive and self-centered" and it has to be corrected, that is why we are so backward in everything.

The authourities should have a rethink on the sentence as they want to end the carrier of the soldiers for NO JUST CAUSE. Those that were obedient servants are / their families are counting their losses.
This will only bring down the morale of others and could spell doom for the military.
PLEASE temper justice with mercy and reconsider these men.
If it will be justified I have never heard that Nigeria has chartered a private plane to buy arms / ammunition like the saga reported few days ago. So many things are wrong hence the drama.
Agreed that they have violated military law / rule / regulation but it was obvious that if they had not declined, they might be lucky to be in the hospital like Lt. Col. Obasanjo or we may not even learn of their predicament as they are nobody. What of the officers that refused to go? What happened to them?
May God save Nigeria. Toks

We are our own problems in this country & that's why our beloved country is still a shithole. Look at most of the comments up here & realize that we intentionally choose to be ignorant....anything goes with the average Nigerian. So you guys think joining the military is only about wearing beautiful uniforms & strolling around town? Insubordination (refusing to act on orders given to you by your superior) is a deadly& grave offence in the military. Who cares if your life is on the line when you're a soldier? That's what you signed up for....AS A SOLDIER,NOBODY FORCES YOU TO GET INTO THE MILITARY. WHEN YOU'RE ENLISTED INTO SERVICE, YOU'RE GIVEN A SET OF RULES OF ENGAGEMENT(including the fact that you very likely to die in the line of duty as a soldier) & YOU HAVE THE CHOICE TO EITHER ACCEPT THEM OR REFUSE TO BECOME A SOLDIER. Once you accept, you take an OATH OF ALLEGIANCE TO YOUR COUNTRY, if you go against the rules of engagement, you better make up your mind to accept the punishments which you already acknowledged to be served for such actions when you first got into the military. To me, 4 years is small sef. We are in a time of war & our soldiers are acting so undisciplined. Any soldier who consciously snitches against the nation & pledge of allegiance to the nation should get at least 6 years in jail.

God Bless Nigeria. Amen.

I have top guys in d army that have been ambushed bcos they where sent KNOWINgLY to go and "die" and to what end? Someone political ambition? How many times during ihejirika's era have the Nigerian soldiers surrounded the bh came and they were asked to withdraw from there. Guys let me tell u, these soldiers voice will not be heard without this act of insubordination, it's for the better. Bh wil Always find its way as long as it remains political

Before i say anything i would like to request you all to think back and follow the trend of happenings in this country. Borno state governor said Nigeria army is ill equipped, he was challenged for saying the truth immediately the army rushed in against the governors comment claiming to be better equipped than the bokoharram . now connect that to the recent happenings the same army who has initially said they are better equipped than bokoharram are now coming up on media telling the public of their plans to procure equipment’s , weapons, fighter jets and others. Yes some are procured but the question is how are they being used. Let me explain something’s in details for you all to understand just so you get a picture of what is really happening.
There are two type of battle plans maneuver and attrition. Attrition is strength for strength let me elaborate on that . attrition is where battle is fought head on by believing number is strength for example if ten (10) men are to fight two (2) men it is a natural expectation for the two men to lose the battle because they are outnumbered by the ten men, this is what attrition entails now what about maneuver warfare this is where the commander on the ground is allowed to plan his battle, he assess the situation then calls on his superior commander, requests for what is required for the battle which is given to him to win the battle. In maneuver warfare number of troops is required but not a necessity. let’s use the 2 men against the 10 men. Supposing 2 men are sent by their commander to battle 10 men, if the 10 men practice attrition by believing their number is more so they should win the battle while the 2 men practice maneuver, the 2 men can request for air support during the battle, they can also request for traps to be set in place for the 10 men, they could also request for an armored vehicle, this makes these 2 men more powerful than even 100 men so by knowing what they have they are not scared to go into battle. Now that I have brought you to an understanding on how things works please lets go back to the Nigerian Army and Bokoharam. The military commanders practice maneuver warfare which requires them asking the president for what they need to combat bokoharram, they are given trillions based on request but still this money is distributed within themselves and substandard equipment’s are bought for soldiers to use. How would u feel in the face of battle you are firing and suddenly your weapon stops firing, you realize it needs repairs, your enemies are still firing and coming towards you? See this is the reason why soldiers run it is because they have got no choice and are scared to talk. I really do have a lot to say but ill stop here and give you all a possible solution to all these.
1. The funding of military equipment’s should not be given to the military.
2. Commanders of various units draw out a list of equipment’s and weapons required
3. The commanders of various unit direct this list straight to the government
4. This list passed to the government should be accumulated.
5. A team of retired generals experts in weaponry and equipment’s (not military serving commanders) is sent out to assess the equipment’s listed and required but the serving military commanders.
6. The equipment’s and weapons are bought and distributed to various commanders who requested for them (the money , cash should NOT be given to the commanders).
This is the only way Nigerian army can be well equipped
