Dear LIB readers: I studied abroad, am I better off here or should I return home for work?
From a male LIB reader
Is it advisable for a Nigerian who studied abroad (UK, US, Canada) to
move back home after studies instead of working menial jobs? And at the Long run, do you think that a Nigerian who moved back home after
studies will be better of than those who stayed back?
What are the experiences of those that moved back home after studies,
How did they gain the courage? Was it easy to get a job?
Bro u shud jst stay bak! D rate of unemployment is so high ! Evn wit ur credentials, its hard to secure job ! We neva can tel , u myt b lucky here in Nigeria! My advice is stay bak!
Linda...to be sincere i think staying abroad is better...if study there you will get a good job not maniac job.. Coming back home is not advisable because people here already don't even have a job so why come bk? To my own honest opinion...if you school there pls stay there and work...you can only come back home to visit your family.
I was in the same situation upon completion of my studies in the UK in 2005, i stayed back for 2 more years searching for that dream job but none materialised. I finally made up my mind and returned home in 2007 without a job. Fast forward to 7 years later and must admit that singular act was the best decision i'd taken my entire life.
You are beta off staying where u are, atleast you are able to do menial job pending the time u get a better job, that is sure income. Moving back is worse. Many graduates are there begging to work in restaurants and actually get some type of income.
Stay back there o,No Jobs here, even when the Jobs come No Job Guarantee,No Light,No Good Road,No Security,No Good Health Facilities,Education is Poor, the Wealth too is Very Harsh,so for real,I wonder what u have to come back too here,However,if u can get a "Good Job" with Mobil,Shell,Chevron,SBJ or ur Father is a Millionaire, owns his Very good Business, then and only then will I advice u to come back...
Better come home where you're valued nd respected bro, my brother did masters only in uk nd trust me he has a well paid job in Nigeria, hope u can defend ur certificate nd hope u did reasonable courses too? If yes then d sky is ur starting point , don't be scared just trust God you wil surely get a good job here.
First of all if you truly studied "abroad" your parents need to ask for a refund ASAP what's with the "at the long run?" before anyone here bothers to start accusing me of hating, I too I'm "studying abroad" so don't bother. Also staying abroad doesn't necessarily mean menial jobs if you work hard and keep applying you will get jobs in your field most Nigerians just resign themselves to menial jobs without even trying. Finally if you are going to move back that depends entirely on you and your destiny for some people its an easy transition they get a job as soon as they return home for other its not so easy you go back and join the rat race like everyone else. If you do decide to move back home whatever sector you are in be the best and have the work ethics of someone abroad otherwise you make no difference to society and might as well have stayed in Nigeria for your studies. I hope that helps. xx Dee
My dear, to get job here no easy o, since i finished my masters from University of Aberdeen, am still @ home. I have started a clothing business to keep me busy.
i currently study abroad... and i know.. youd earn money enough to feed, but thats just it,life would be extremely hard for you if you live on menial jobs here... If i graduate and cant find a job in the field i studied... im going back home. itd be much better, and yes in the long run, people at home do better than one who works menial jobs abroad..in all aspects.. IN EVERY ASPECT
Dude dont come here o, just stay back do the menial job, beside even the citizens of those country are also doing those menial job so yu are not alone.... . . . ***CURRENTLY IN JUPITER***
How long can you stay there for after your studies? How long is your visa for? U wan b illegal? Cos unless some company is sponsoring your visa or you marry for papers...there lies your answer
If there's job for you over there then don't come back but if not come back home if you can hustle, don't come back and expect someone to come and dash you work because you studied abroad.
Well, I actually don't know the Country you are. but if you're in the USA u will have sometime to get a formal job. if you are good in your department the company will surely help you with working visa. except u are sure a job is waiting for u in naija. Be smart.
Yes it very very easy to get a job. There's job in every corner of Nigeria especially in sambisa forest in Borno state. Abeg try and come back frist thing 2moro morning ok...
Please stay where you are. I moved back and still suffering for my decision. It was not hard gaining employment but the other things of life...quality of life went out the window
If u studied abroad then u should be able to get a good job in ur area of discipline .I will not advice u to go back home to 1. NO NEPA 2..kIDNAPPERS 3. NO CLEAN WATER 4.BOKO HARAW 5. ARMED ROBBERS 5. HIRED KILLERS 6. WITCHES AND WIZARDS The list goes on my dear stay where u are and enjoy the freedom God has blessed u with.
This is something my guys and I were brainstorming on just yesterday. We studied here for 5 years (BSc & MSc), scaled through multiple interviews only to be dumped for less qualified citizens. We took 6weeks each to come back to nja to explore opportunities (networking & applying seriously), yet still negative so just came back. Abroad dey vex for educated Africans & naija sef dey vex for abroad educated. Which way nah!!
ma guy, if u know wetin gud for u, just remain there ooo, we dey really suffer here oo, person dey tink of how to excape from naija, u dey tink of how to come here, just stay abroad n enjoy ur life abeg
If u love urself u better stay put wherever u are. Cos if u return back to naija if u don't get bombed, u get kidnapped den d unemployment issue pls don't even let us go there.
Many of you Africans in Nigeria and overseas Srebrenica so dumb... I say this because the anticipation is that one place I'd better then the other... Wrong. It's a case by case basis.. Some people are go getters and will do well anywhere. Look at LinkedIn for instance..not every naija in new York is a nurse or cleaner. And not every African back home is a managing director or CEO Good luck to you all.
Ha and I pity u ooo. Even if u ask google, it will tell u dat Nigeria as moved higher from a corrupt country, to a dangerous country. Even if u do menial jobs ova der, its not going to b 4eva..@ least u ll b able to sleep well, without fear of robbers, kidnappers, bokoharam, bombings,ETC...+when der is life, der is hope.. No come back oo. All our leaders kids, NEVER come bk, so stay der. Don't u watch CNN? Aw can u ask dis type of question sef? NAija bad no be small....#plaintruth
I think it depends on who you are, what you studied and the kind of job you expect to get when you come back. Some graduates get great(or in some cases, average) jobs due to the ingenuity of the course they studied, some get from past relationships with companies here in Nigeria, some get from personal/family ties, some get out of luck while others don't get because they have none of the above. My personal opinion though is that life is a struggle and you should always take a chance on yourself, no matter where you are.... i haff speak English finish!bye!
STAY BACK THERE AND WORK HARD IF YOU KNOW WHAT IS GOOD FOR YOU... I'M SHOUTING FOR EMPHASIS PURPOSE.... THERE ARE NO READY-MADE JOBS FOR FOREIGN TRAINED IN NIGERIA ANYMORE. I HAVE FRIENDS WHO HAVE COMPLETED THEIR MASTERS FROM UK UNIVERSITIES HERE IN NAIJA AND THEY ARE STILL PRETTY MUCH JOBLESS ... U BETTER STAY BACK, BETTER TO DO MENIAL JOB ABROAD THAN TO DO SAME IN NIGERIA... I DON TELL YOU FINISH
Trying to make up ur mind whether to come back home or not can be one of the most challenging decisions a student abroad will make. This difficulty in arriving at a right decision is based purely because of the uncertainty surrounding one's future after studies. However, as far as I am concerned, what we can do here is to present the arguments, pros and cons of coming back, and then you will have to make and take the final decision ursef.
I'll take the United Kingdom as a case study: they have cancelled their Post Study Work visa programme, which initially afforded students who have completed their studies (Masters or undergraduates) two additional years of stay in that country to look for professional jobs. Now, more aptly put, immediately u are done with school, u compulsorilyhave to return back home to ur country - no visa renewal of any sorts.
The good thing, however, about the UK visa is that they usually give students hours per week whereby students can do menial jobs to support themselves. These jobs pay averagely between £6.5 to £8 pounds, depending on the company.
Now, my advice is this: if you are very certain that u are the bright student who can easily pass any company's aptitude tests or interviews in Nigeria, please, come back home. Or, if u re very certain that there's a 'sure' job waiting for u (you know, connections, man-know-iman), u can pack ur bags and start darting back home. However, if u re nt sure about the two factors above, stay put there, else u'll find it very challenging to get a job.
I will advise u to stay, save up,set up a family and move on, if I have that opportunity u have,i won't be where I am now, after graduating from d uni,i had to learn how to bake so I can have something to live on, I can only advice him to come back if the Job is alredi waiting for u or if u have a vocational work u want to set up or a biz,if not abeg stay and make wise use of what you have
It depends on personal circumstances back home. I don't see the point of someone finishing school and staying in a foreign country doing menial work that will get you no where except give you false comfort. On the other hand if you get a good job after school where you can develop in your career then its good to use the opportunity to develop before going back home- as for me I stayed back to develop my in career as I was opportune to but I know of friends and family who went back and are doing very well, some are comfortable and others are still picking up. As for the later they still prefer been home than staying abroad doing menial work...
Depends on wat u studied oooo! Its nt all courses/professions dt r relevent in nigeria.so its beta u stay back and do ur menial jobs dan come to b irrelevant here
Lmao, dont deceive yourself. No one will notice you here, you have better chances of getting a job there than here. There are so many foreign graduates including me with a masters degree in nigeria and we all still searching for jobs.
funny I am in this exact situation this is what I have been thinking because in few weeks time I'll be graduating... honest response will be appreicated.
Even tho you get a menial job abroad .. You still get more money abroad than Naija .. My brother stay abroad Abeg .. Linda better post my comment this tym oh
I too have/am struggling with this decision and I am gay but feel like Africa is home for me but I know I love abroad more because of its amenities..Just follow your heart.
Linda you should better, if you school abroad it gives you more egde in finding a job, I don't know if that's still on till date. Moreso if u school in Nigeria u will also get a job but most of our private companies will want 2 pay u lesser than that man who has schooled abroad. Naturally d job isn't easy to come by whether a nigerian graduate or US/Canada/UK. The only thing that guarantees a job is knowing that GOD ur creator will connec u to d right person for a gud job..a friend of mine just got a job in a company as their accountant and he's annual renumeration is 4.8m, he schooled in Nigeria
Lol if u already have a job waiting for u I advice u come back but if u don't my brother stay there oo, I am talking from experience, can't wait to go back by december after NYSC, tho der is money in NIGERIA but u have to knw d right people I mean connectIon.. Don't make my mistake plz... Linda try post dis my comment oo make he no come make bad mistake
You dey craze! Wetin you won con do here?e big like say you don high, na this bomb blasting, plane crashing, kidnapping,no light, no jobs country you won come abi? OK a beg make we exchange
Well choose your poison. Menial jobs there or here? I'd like to say home is better but dude there's no job unless you have the stomach for stealing or kidnapping or I think shekau's hiring. On a more serious note, DO NOT LEAVE THERE UNLESS YOU HAVE A JOB LINED UP FOR YOU.
Linda,as I speak with you I have a Masters gained in the Uk,I'm currently in the states improving myself and working.I dare not return to Nigeria,it's too bloody and rough.Too many bad things going on there.Kudos to the brave ones and heroes who return home!
Pls don't come back if u don't ve any god father to fix u up. 9ja is not a healthy place for ur progress. Is better to watch plate there than coming here to work in the bank.Safe urself the stress.
Yeah we knw dat d educational level over dere is better off dan ours bt one thing is dat working over dere isn't easy. Bt if u get a gud payin job over dere, its better u stay than coming bck to this evil country
I would advise u come home if you have connection or planning to be an entrepreneur. There re no jobs in naija esp if u ve a masters degree cos u become a threat to employers with no masters degree, employers also feel they dont ve ur kinda salary so no job, am presently in dis situation nd ve bin advised to remove my masters qualifications from my cv. Would ve stayed in d UK if I knew its gonna be dis bad. The frustration is real
Dear foreign Student, I studied in this country (Nigeria), I'm quite intelligent & capable, but the sector I would love to work in places premium on "foreign Nigerians" or those who travelled abroad & returned with inconsistent foreign accents. So my advice to you is so simple, get to find out about the employment peculiarity of the sector you would love to work, don't worry just be confident. "Foreigners" are better respected here.
This is no story. I know so manynigerians with masters degree, obtained from their university without a job. Here in the us, citizens keep upgrading to masters to get a better job other than the usual minimal job. So studying abroad does not even guarantee you jobl mean good job in the country u obtain the degree. Things has really change. To work in Macdonald now, you even need to upgrade.for our 'country Nigerian, you need a god father to present your foreign certificate. Remmaimber, so many here with masters degree obtain from the state here with their papers are taxi drivers. But with thee exchange rate, if they. Are say hired companies taxi weekly, their weekly income will more than ur monthly pay. Unless for u in nigiau have other fees or runs as added income. Let me now rest, count your teeth with ur tongue. The issue here is not where you studied. Many came to the same market but not all are for sale.
Linda what type of rubbish is this!? You want to make all these your readers start thinking that every Nigerian living abroad is working menial jobs. I'm beginning to believe that you are the one coming up with all these stupid Dear Linda Stories to attract misinformed comments. You are slowly driving me away from this your blog. Keep at it.
unless u have tight connection here otherwise o boy stay where you are and tell one oyinbo i love you for green card. Work na work abroad, nothing like menial.
if you studied overseas get a job there. Currently there is a high rate of unemployment in the country. Besides to who much is given much is expected. Compete with your peers over there & don't come back here and be forming local champion.
I believe advise in this regard is based on knowledge of your unique status in the country which we don't have. Will you soon become an illegal immigrant or do you have legal rights to remain in the country? Studying abroad is a means to and end and not necessarily an end. If you say you are doing menial jobs then it doesn't seem like you are in a good place because a graduate deserves better. My advise: be factual to yourself and do your calculations and make a choice. I returned from the UK 7yrs ago and it turned out the best decision for me after I concluded my Masters and there was no hope with getting a work visa and I knew I didn't have the heart to stay illegally.
Many times, those who studied abroad have an edge over those who schooled here because foreign degrees on your c.v. appeals more to recruiters. Rather than settle for a menial job and let your self esteem be getting a licking each and everyday, why not from there send your c.v. to Nigerian recruitment agencies and see what they can offer? I bet you would get a job with which you can maintain the lifestyle akin to what you are already accustomed to.
"Global Economic Meltdown". It's not Easy to get a skilled Job anywhere in the world right now especially when you will see a Job advert for "Graduate Trainees" and the applicants are required to have atleast "7-years" working experience in a similar role.
Here is it: If you have "Connection" here in Nigeria then come back home, otherwise stay over there and be doing menial jobs until you save enough money that can sustain you for like 2years after coming back to Nigeria.
to be honest plz stay deir make some money den maybe after things settle u could come back. ppl will lie and tell u to com back but plz dont Nigeria is messed up and if u are told we are to make d change , ask yourself how would I help do DAT. if u can't answer just stay in Canada.
The meniality of the work over there is 101 better than the menial works we know here. Dude I will advise you remain there for now whilst you try to work out something here. Do not come down until you are 99 sure that 'yes' once you come you resume work. You what I mean?, I will rather prefer you use the flight money to figure out tiny ways there.
This will sound unpatriotic but stay there, you got a better chance of making a good life there than here! It's a dog eat dog world down here and only the rich and lucky survive. There millions here who would kill for an opportunity at a menial job in Canada and London. So stay back.
Ask God to direct you- your destiny and your location are very co-dependent. Either way, I reckon you need experience. Find a way to get experience in a field that is in demand in BOTH nigeria and the UK and if you can ensure you have a way to return abroad if things dont work well. Also it would be good to get a job offer before you relocate....
I stayed back and earn well over £50k per annum( so around 4k per month ish) doing IT, while my husband makes almost double that... in IT. My family friend relocated to Nigeria ( we are in same field), and after loads of failed promises is earning N150k per month in Nigeria. She regrets going back to Nigeria as she was better off here.
At the same time, I know of people who went back to Niaja and are earning 20million per annum.. so really, carry your case go to God. Ensure you have experience.Ensure you have pali to return if things no work out in naija... and be resilient.
I will advise u based on my experience. At d end of d day, d choice is entirely yours to make. I returned home after studies and a little work bcos of d happiness and social life I enjoy in Nigeria. Uk wz very boring. D only means of entertainment der is d internet. I got tired of waiting 4 Irokotv to upload movies 2tyms a week. I also got tired of returning home frm work n gng 2 bed immediately. (I guess I have too much 9ja blood in my system) Pple hardly visit each other bcos d tym spent wit friends could easily b converted 2 money. Weekends were arrrghhhh.... I missed weddings n d numerous social engagements we have in 9ja. The truth is, if u ve a good job here, then u r better off. Getting a job wasn't easy. U need a lot of patience and determination. I got mine 18months after I returned. D case may be different for u bcos some pple I knw, got theirs much earlier. It all depends on ur area of specialisation and God's favour. Cut down on ur expectations in terms of salary bcos millions of pple in 9ja labour market ve foreign certificates too. D competition is high and companies r interested in cutting costs. Most 'returnees' expect #250K n above...hehehe. E no go work ooo. So if u like a little of everything, then do 9ja but if want 2 b an all-work-n-no-play person. Remain where u r. In my opinion, those countries r only good 4 vacations. If u want to make it big and flex while at it, 9ja is d way forward.(Family, friends and fun) All d best with ur decision.
My dear come back home, you'll get a good job.. Nigerians believe in foreign certificate. Besides I believe in faith if u put it to work it'll yield for u. If u don't believe in getting a job even if u come back or u remain there u won't still get a job,but if u believe u'll get a job then u'll hv it no matter the planet u are in..
I've read through the comments and what I noticed is people think whenever u work abroad you are doing a below the table or laborer job. smh. it is not so. Like I said if you are in the US get a good resume and prove yourself. the company will never want u to go. I know it is not really the same in the UK (so I heard). Think about it well, opportunity comes but once.
U can't study abroad and get a menial job, mayb UK can b an exception. It depends, buh in countries like Canada and USA, one already gat a job wiv reasonable pay while studying, let alone completing studies. My brother, in Nigeria, even wiv ur first class degree, it's difficult buh by d grace of God one can get smfin.. you can stay back and get a job or you take d bull by d horn and come back home to apply for a job or even start up something on ur own. For me, entrepreneurship is d key. Wts ur passion?? Discover and pursue it! The choice is yours...#Ekwulekwu Sylvonce lol
My guy u don study abroad and u dey see how things are done, pls.......I beg,you should only return to this country if innovative enough to provide more jobs not to come and seek job where there is none available, cus at the end of the day som company with a low life C.E.O would believe you are superior and place you ahead of brilliant chap who hav studied in this country against all odds and graduated with good grades. Or join the entertainment industry they could make u a star in less dan a year all bcus you came from overseas.
This is where your connections comes into play. Use every cxn at your finger tips, Nigeria is a good place to work. Good certificates + strong connections, u will be swimming in good money. Thank me later.
My advice is simple and probably the best u will get so listen carefully. Work menial jobs der(am sure u r in UK cos US and canada grads usually get decent jobs) for one year or two. D key is to save enough money am talking at least 1million naira and THEN u come home to start your own business and b ur own boss
Guy is lyk ur uncle in d village hz strtd remote-controllin ur brain!!.... Its beta to b idle thr nd b safe than 2 com here and work while livin in fears!!!.... By @successralu
It is rather unfortunate that studying abroad ÅŠo̶̷̩̥̊͡ longer guarantee G̶̲̥̅̊Æ ̴̴͡.̮Æ ̴̴̴͡D̶̲̥̅̊ jobs in naija. A cousin of mine made d mistake of returning home after his master 4rm Uk A̶̲̥̅̊ñ̷̊D̶̲̥̅̊ 4 yrs down d line is yet 2 get a job. My advice to U̶̲̥̅ is to do any job that can fetch U̶̲̥̅ money over there A̶̲̥̅̊ñ̷̊D̶̲̥̅̊ save some 2 start up a bizness in naija cos paid employment is rather difficult 2 come by
Guy is lyk ur uncle in d village hz strtd remote-controllin ur brain!!.... Its beta to b idle thr nd b safe than 2 com here and work while livin in fears!!!.... By @successralu
PLEEEAAAASE: Take the advise of only the people that have studied abroad and come back home. After my masters in the in 2008, I had a good job in the UK. I finally decide to come back home in 2010. Believe me... if you believe in yourself the sky is the limit. I now earn more than I ever earned in the UK. I own properties too. You hardly see people having several properties and a fat bank account abroad. People who haven't lived abroad think it is easy over there (Guess what? It isn't). However if u choose to live a life of mediocrity you can stay back the county you are in. God Bless
my brother , how wil u leave a country where security is high, for a country where security is nothing to write home about. a country where u hav 24 hours electricity for a country where there is always power failure. think of d high rate of kidnaping n ritualist in Nigeria. pls better stay back. is not only about d money but about ur safety first.
brother, pls stay back ohhhh , people er risking dia lives crossing desert cus of unemployment n boko haram, here u er think of going back home? u better rethink
It's a critical decision you have to make yourself...since destinies are different. well, in my case, I had a good job, docked almost 7yrs with same company, completed my studies with flying colors, single, had a happy life of traveling around and all the independent things life could offer. My decision to move home after nope, I don't need nysc bla bla took almost 8yrs but when the time was right, it took me only 5 months to remind myself plan B was always an option. Resigned, packed up, bye to friends and fam, completed NYSC and boom almost a yr+ later am still applying for jobs. Do I regret my decision? Nope, I see it as a gap year to rest, clear my brain while I do what I like best until that big paying job comes. Bright side though, i have plans to head out in 2-3 yrs. But been at home has been so beneficial. So it's up to you my friend.
Il soon be in d same dillema soon, il be going to sheffield hallam ds sept and ive been thinking about ds same issue now i know better thaank God im a lady after my masters il work and marry a rich white guy, and stay put there. #camila_luna#
There are no jobs in Nigeria yet people I know are changing jobs every 3yrs? Its all about packaging yourself and having the required skills, nobody employs you cos you have a certificate. Do you have the skills? Ask yourself that.
There is a popular saying- who no go no know! Some people think that abroad is a bed of roses...sorry, its as difficult as Naija as unemployment exist as well, the only difference is u get to enjoy basic amenities as long as u can chest the bills- u even spend more abroad than u do in Naija. To answer the questions asked, I advise u remain abroad only if u have a valid visa which is sometimes difficult as u re expected to leave the country few months after u finish ur studies and sometimes that does not give u a chance to get a good Job which will enable u renew ur visa. So rather than stay illegal in a foreign Land, pls return home as God might favour you- trust me being illegal will deprive u of so much that u would regret ever making that decision. I also advise that you volunteer as soon as u re in ur final semester to work in an organisation relating to ur course of study-may be difficult but give it a try, hopefully before ur certificate comes out, they might decide to permanently retain you as anything is possible. Above all, ask for God's direction, he knows where u can best fulfil ur destiny- there is more to life than education and Job. Cheers! **WISEONE**
U can only get a job in Nigeria if u know the company owner a politician or someone working in High level human resources. If u don't, pls stay where u are it is not as easy as it seems....people abroad always think it is lounging all the way in 9ja till they come back Then they start regretting.
If u can't secure a professional job abroad, then it's by far better to return home. There is no doubt that it may take a little while to get a job here, but believe me,you will be better off here than abroad. Most people that will advice u to stay back are those who have never lived abroad, and who don't understand the challenges immigrants face in those countries, especially the UK. My honest advice is please come home.
Ha people just believe the idea of america is the ideal thing just wait till reality hits as an immigrant its hard to adapt especially when your not financially stable...if your not go back home except you want to be a construction worker or a cab driver..I've met a lot of African taxi drivers here (talking from experience)
It's not as easy as you think it is overseas. Overseas, you will alwats remain a second class citizen. That means being passed over for jobs you are qualified for. Overtime, it affects your career because your peers are ahead of you in their respective careers, while you are still looking for your place.
Bros oh, I completed my Masters as well in One of the best universities in London. One year after return no show, no job, it's really bad! I had to seek God's face and ask for his directions to help me fulfil my destiny. Today I am the CEO of my Interior firm, a proud one at that. It's simple, Know what u want, discover your passion, ask God for a vision & Directions. That's all. Your destiny might not just be in a foreign land. Naija is hell yes, but with hardwork, Education, Integrity and street smartness, u will make it Big.
First there is nothing like being "better than those back home". Second, im also studying in Europe currently, im thinking of staying at least a year to try n get a good job. If it comes along (hopefully) fine! otherwise, im gonna do menial jobs, get some money run back home n start a business. getting a job may b difficult in naija but belive me, business, if well set up ll BOOM!
I read all the comments and 99% says he should stay back! Well I agree with you guys. I have been in this country for 2 years... Applied, used connections, and still no job. I have given up, just purchased my ticket back to the US. Not saying your case may not be different but u think it's best you stay back. Don't make the mistakes that I made by coming home. If u do have some type of business in mind to open up in Nigeria while u search for a job then go ahead if not... I suggest u stay back! Menial job is better than sitting at home. #Boredouttamymind
Come and see how graduates and masters holders were scouthing for common 28k teaching job here in port harcourt. That menial job u're going to do there will not be forever. Canada is even better to work in.
Oga Ade! Na wch course u study? Anyhw sha my own opinion is dat u change ur studies 2 sumtin in d medical field I.e nursing medicine et al and stay bk der 2 wrk . U wld earn gud doe. Tank me later
Well u just ve to let ur hears be open to know which jobs r employing pple, some pple here just need wat u ve, pple r saying no jobs in dis country but I keep wondering how some pple get dis jobs, if u r good with watu do u ll get a good job but at d same time its not easy u might spend months, years before eventually getting one..u ve to be patient if u want to come back
I studied in d UK in 2009/10. Did all sorts of menial jobs but stipends could only meet my basic needs. No extra savings wotsoever. Got my 2yrs PSW visa thru funds from Naija but returned home in 2011. Sat at home for about 18months and eventually got in job in d last quarter of 2012. It wasn't easy waiting but now I don't regret it. I have 3landed properties, all thanks to God thru d job I have. Wld Neva have been possible if I was still in d UK. I go for vacation now and my friends come to me like d rich one. Pls come home. Home is beta any time T.
What do you mean by 'menial' jobs? Even graduates are doing jobs they are overqualified for in the west, so no shame in grinding down to do a so-called menial job. But if I were any Nigerian who has graduated with a Masters overseas, if you are thinking of going back home, you should go home to set up something, not look for something! No way would I think of going back home unless I am going to do something that will employ people who will in turn employ people
Bro! Stay wherever you are, and DON'T GO BACK TO WORK IN NIGERIA!
I schooled in the US and worked in Lagos for about a year. I had a good job and connections, but that still wasn't enough to convince me to stay. The everyday living conditions do not compare. If you are someone who truly wants to move forward in life, going back to Nigeria poses a serious threat to that. Basic things like electricity, respectful customer service, infrastructure/nice roads, etc.. are just too few and far between. There were even people who WORKED at my job who begged me for money everyday because they knew I was from abroad (since everyone who lives outside of Nigeria has an unlimited amount of disposable money.) Also, unless you know someone directly involved within a company, getting a good job is extremely difficult. There are plenty of adults with "advanced" degrees who are frantically searching for jobs.
Don't get me wrong, the main reason I returned was because of my love of country. But after living there and having one bad experience after another, I've realized that I love being a Nigerian more than I love being in Nigeria. Even if you're a part of the basic upper class (which is a great achievement in itself), your life will still present more challenges than living in the middle class in somewhere like the US/UK/CA.
Another thing: don't waste 1 full year of your life doing NYSC. Your time can most definitely be spent elsewhere making you in to a better person and professional. All in all, you should definitely come back to Nigeria for visits or if a great opportunity comes up, but if you have the option to stay and live/work in an advanced country... Do it. There are people in Nigeria who pray everyday to get out of that country, don't take your opportunity for granted.
One thing I know is Nigerians are lazy and I repeat the youth of nowadays are lazy, give me a country without unrest now? Are u saying if u live abroad u cannot be bombed, stabbed, waylaid or whatever RIP to those that have lost their lives abroad in these circumstances. If ur mind says come home, come home it's a simple thing, I lived in the US for so many years and no job, I packed my bags and relocated back home and is have my business and I even employ so what are u limiting urself thinking of who wl employ u when u can put ur education to good use and be an employer urself. If u are not flamboyant, flippant wt ur mouth or extremely rude and bossy, u'll make cool money in Nigeria and u wl have a peaceful life. But if u come back and visit beer parlours to show off how much u make, d babes u can buy wt a tap of ur fingers, of course kidnappers wl look for u now. And pls stop advising people to stay abroad because you are not the owner of their destiny, if Adenuga or Dangote had relocated abroad wl they command what they are commanding now? That's the issue wt Nigerian youth, u complain politicians are looting u blind and ruling u even when they are close to the grave but you have forgotten that u people are not even on ground to take over d bantle, u are abroad slaving ur youth away while some old fools are milking ur nations resources dry. Or how many times have they kidnapped adenuga's children or Jim ovia's children? Pray to leave ur bottom zone and be counted among d movers and shakers in life.
It depends on you really. From the experience of my children ,one had a second class upper in chemical engineering from University College London but was in UK for a year after and could not get a job. She came home did her youth service and within a few months after she got a job in Shell. Most of her friends that came home are gainfully employed and seem to be having the time of their life. My second child is still in UK but has a contract job. If you have a good degree in a demanding profession the sky is the limit for you in Nigeria. So it is all up to you. Claire
The only Nigerians living in Nigeria who may be financially better off than those (including 'so called' menial job workers) abroad (Europe, North America) are those in the oil and gas sector, senior banking staff (minimum-bank manager level, and business owners (making profit (not revenue/turnover of 500k naira a month after appropriate costings). My dear brother, dont be deceived by the 'money dey naija'; 'pada si naija'; 'naija na d place'; nothing my brother. The only 'unfortunately good thing' about naija (which is true of all poor nations) is that when you are rich, you can 'enjoy'. For example, as a young man, you can sleep with 3 girls per day as you wish...but beyond these kinds of enjoyment (only reserved for the rich)....nothing dey o. Sit your ass there, do professional exams, work hard; do other degrees; consider a phd....and above all be patient. it is not a must that you must be a millionare today, or this year, or in 5 years time. over where you are, you get health care, security....in the last one year, I have lost than 4 friends (not aquitances) in nigeria......i go there very often and I know what am talking about. often times, those wey dey clamour say make u return (including the abroad returnees) fe so e di 'da bi mo se da ni'......if you desperate for quick money often times coated with quick death, return ...but if u want a decent life, famli, safe, secure and prosperity good enough .....stay back ....ire o. By the way, am based abroad, doing what you may call a 'dream job'; folks like me make double what am making here in nigeria....but they spend it on fuel, 'poor education, yet they pay millions for it', .....I am happy here.....
it depends on what you studied. if you are more into business or engineering, return home cause this is where the money is at. The oil business here is very profitable. but if you are in the medical field or anything else for that matter just stay back abroad cause doctors don't get half the worth of what they really are in Nigeria including salary, respect and prestige.
I will always advice that anyone who is at this crossed road should weigh their options very very well. Having finished from a university, you should be able to tell if you can come back to your country or stay where you are.

I am not coming back home, after paying thousands dollars here in medical school...bro just stay where you are. Who will pay you to recover the money spent schooling in abroad.
My dear, I did my M.Sc in the UK too and returned last year , after doing "per hour" jobs for a while. Most of d people advising u to stay have never LIVED abroad, they are just typical naija with escapee mentality, per hour wastes ur life cos it adds nothing to ur career and destiny, if u do 7 years per hour ur mates in naija would have left u far behind, d UK is hard and taxes plus bills are unreasonable. No matter how bad, if u r good u would get a job in naija in good time, most graduates complaining are typical unemployable grads. Since I came back last year, I got 3 high profile jobs and now about to get married while doing business, ask urself, is this ever possible in d UK, take d step of faith come back and trust God
Dude come back home and start a business, u will surely make it big time. Visit Naijainvest.blogspot.com there are lots of opportunities waiting for you
Maniac job keh? I don't think so dear "Hismajesty". People should proof read comments before posting. Basic things like this speak volumes of the kind of person you are.
Nigerians are one of the smartest people in the world. This is a fact the white man knows, if you r lucky enough, to study in the US na nice "one chance" be that, you can get a job and your company will apply for u (visa) or better still, kukuma join army if you are about to be illegal, and the army has amazing opportunities. These guys don't even like school, not every high school graduate goes to College. Imagine oooo! They will just sit down and decide not to further education why?!! When you have financial aid, grants and co. If you know what you're made off, send out your resume, they will call you. All the best
Moving to Nigeria will never be good idea for some Nigerians at home but for someone abroad' my advice to you make sure you seek the advice of your parent. 2 hot weather 3.have connections 4 expect eletricity failure. 5 expect your Salary late. >>>Keep your plane ticket incase you can't cope
Everybody saying go back to Nigeria r not been sincere...unless u r unable yo live in d Country where u are then really u don't have a choice but to go back...if u r in canada I'll say get you PR first before any move...Nigeria is not a "safe" place anymore..and even if u do get a decent job ..quality of life is not guaranteed...no security..no light...no water...no fuel...bad roads...and the most important in my opinion no good health services.. Life isn't all about money..and in Nigeria u have to use money to have d basic quality of life ..whereas this are normal living abroad and a right..whether u have a menial job or not.. I won't live in Nigeria again by GOds grace...even if I am paid to do so...a country where it's government don't care about its citizens and you are on your own syndrome is what drives us.. Good luck!
Nah! I beg to differ. I did my LLM in 2007 here in the UK and upon graduation I got a job with a bank in West Yorkshire. Today I work with Kpmg and I'm loving it. Married now with Kids...bills are to be paid but only the living can pay their bills. Dear poster, unless your stay's expired then do the honourable thing and relocate. If not push harder, get a cv editor online and work on your resume. Trust God!!
It should be a personal decision depending on your condition. I also studied abroad.got a job after two months of getting back to Nigeria. Do note that there wasn't any promise of a job in Nigeria before I packed my bag and left the UK. I only felt why pay 11000 GBP for a Masters and use my certificate to work in a retail store? So woke up one day and decided to leave for Naija. And here I have been ever since.its all about determination and knowing what you want. I achieved so much within two years in Nigeria more than my entire five years in the UK.
Clean air, water, civil people, cool neighbours, well mannered citizens, Good healthy food and health care, exceptional security and above all, hope- that you will have a better tomorrow. Now ask yourself again, do you want to leave all of that for Nigeria? Hmnnn I didn't think so too!
Its kinda funny... people that have lived and studied abroad are advising my guy to return, while people that have been living here and have never been there (for a protracted period of time, at least) are urging him to stay there. My dear, if you finish, come back here! Coming back home is better! There is no job ANYWHERE but people are still getting jobs EVERYWHERE. If you know your onions, you will land that dream job and you can still travel abroad for hols. My 2 cents!
going back to Nigeria or staying abroad may not be the issue , the concern maybe do you have plans that are workable abroad on the long term that would put you ahead?, if you go back do you have plans as to what would be doing if it takes a long time to find work, the truth is that wherever you are , there are always going to possibilities to use those low paying jobs to get better jobs because you have skills and experience that demonstrate what you can do , on the other hand if you could afford a high priced life insurance, you may go home and try things out because Nigeria has become more dangerous than before in some parts and you will need special prayers to live in some parts of Nigeria. In the place you currently live the chances of getting killed are very slim and it is easier to build a sensible pension .God protects his own no matter what and the steps of a righteous man are ordered by God , why not take short holiday in Nigeria and see how things go so that you can test the waters before making a decision on whether to relocate or not.
All those people that studied in d UK in the past 3 yrs anyway do not have a choice but to return home since UK changed their rules...so thy should stop fronting like going home was a decision they made!
you wey dey study abroad, take your eye check am. no dey ask people wey never cross Nigerian boundary if studying abroad is better. If you are abroad, what do you see? search around, ask questions, do some research, is there job for you? if yes, then stay there! dont ask Nigerians who are INSIDE Nigeria to make your decision for you. I am presently schooling out of Nigeria and I do not see myself coming back to work immediately. How i go spend money abroad, come go back to Nigeria only to be receiving less than what i paid in oyibo school? if its a matter of raising up kids and remembering ones culture, I can come back for sometime. but thats it. however, this is my own decision. You have to make your own: na only you know wetin dey sweet you. not everybody outside Nigeria is doing menial job o.There are PLENTY successful Nigerians out here. the difference is that you're in another world altogether so your struggle is twice as hard. But then again nothing good comes easy!Make use of your eyes and ears and do whats BEST for you and not for anyone else. And pray to God to bless your struggle.
Ok, this is what I think. relocating to Nigeria or not depends on your course of study like most people have pointed out it is not about 'I studied abroad or not' it is about what exactly did you study'Community Health, Family Planning etc, tell me if you relocate with a background like that, who would employ you?. Look LIB contributors, please try and be very objective in your contributions. It is not about studying abroad it is about your course of study that would determine whether you would get a job in Nigeria or not. For contributors who have lived abroad at one time or the other, they know that since the recession, economies of the world have not been the same. So frankly where ever one decides to live or to make a home one has to be detemined because no where is easy - whether Nigeria whether UK, US, Canada or Western Europe no where is easy anymore it is as simple as that.

Make your choice, but i would prefer staying there o
Yea its nt easy to get a job here bt if u get one wiv ur certificate dey wil pay u well
Linda...to be sincere i think staying abroad is better...if study there you will get a good job not maniac job.. Coming back home is not advisable because people here already don't even have a job so why come bk? To my own honest opinion...if you school there pls stay there and work...you can only come back home to visit your family.
Linda...to be
I was in the same situation upon completion of my studies in the UK in 2005, i stayed back for 2 more years searching for that dream job but none materialised.
Dude do yourself a favour and sit your ass right where you are...accept your daddy is aliko dangote or Ur sponsors are dem bokos...
Of cos you should return home as u are better of.
Dear poster I hope u knw the amount of unemployed graduates in Nig.
Don't come home o, stay there. People are escaping in droves from this dungeon of a country and you wanna come home?
Dude dont come here o, just stay back do the menial job, beside even the citizens of those country are also doing those menial job so yu are not alone....

How long can you stay there for after your studies? How long is your visa for? U wan b illegal? Cos unless some company is sponsoring your visa or you marry for papers...there lies your answer
My guy plzz stay there and secure for a job coming bak to niaja is not a bad thing but there is job down here.
you are on your own.4rm Anonymous Wilsoniyke.
If there's job for you over there then don't come back but if not come back home if you can hustle, don't come back and expect someone to come and dash you work because you studied abroad.
U don enter once chance if u go bk to Naija.
Don't try it lol.. you call that country a home?
Ask God for directions. Go on ur knees. Thank u. Goodluck.
Well, I actually don't know the Country you are. but if you're in the USA u will have sometime to get a formal job. if you are good in your department the company will surely help you with working visa. except u are sure a job is waiting for u in naija. Be smart.
Oga stay there and find a living, there's nothing to write home abt ur father land
###############GOD#################################punish###############################devil############
Please come bak home enough jobs in Chibok.
My dear,no need coming back because those that are here are looking for a
way to run out.or do you want them to bomb you
Yes it very very easy to get a job. There's job in every corner of Nigeria especially in sambisa forest in Borno state. Abeg try and come back frist thing 2moro morning ok...
Brother mi,Omo Iya,I strongly advice u not to come home if u aren't 100% sure of a promising future.
Please stay where you are. I moved back and still suffering for my decision. It was not hard gaining employment but the other things of life...quality of life went out the window
If u studied abroad then u should be able to get a good job in ur area of discipline .I will not advice u to go back home to
1. NO NEPA
2..kIDNAPPERS
3. NO CLEAN WATER
4.BOKO HARAW
5. ARMED ROBBERS
5. HIRED KILLERS
6. WITCHES AND WIZARDS
The list goes on my dear stay where u are and enjoy the freedom God has blessed u with.
Btw: Linda, this wallpaper no gree jell abeg.
@chux.com....remain where ever you are.anywhere you schooled work there!!!!.
Pls stay were u are,u wunt get job here,execpt u got connections...but if u dnt,stay were u are...
No mater the environment you find yourself. know it that it is not of him that runneth or of him that willeth but of Him that showeth mercy
ma guy, if u know wetin gud for u, just remain there ooo, we dey really suffer here oo, person dey tink of how to excape from naija, u dey tink of how to come here, just stay abroad n enjoy ur life abeg
And not every African back home is a managing director or CEO
Good luck to you all.
abeg come borno state,,,,yeye dey smell, abeg remain abroad n enjoy urself joor
Move bk home honey.
U better stay back cus over 5million Nigerian youths are jobless.
Erm dunno bt I think what u got upstairs is what matters......
However, if u re nt sure about the two factors above, stay put there, else u'll find it very challenging to get a job.
u had stay nd practice ur field over there.
Chai,LWKMD! U'd beta stay deir, I repeat stay deir!
funny I am in this exact situation this is what I have been thinking because in few weeks time I'll be graduating... honest response will be appreicated.
Linda you should better, if you school abroad it gives you more egde in finding a job, I don't know if that's still on till date. Moreso if u scho
?
This is the dumbest post ever.. Dear poster, please return back to Naija, as your thinking faculty is already messed up. Wth
If is me,am not coming back.
Badoo of toronto is ds u?if yes pls cm bk to nigeria and suffer
Well choose your poison. Menial jobs there or here? I'd like to say home is better but dude there's no job unless you have the stomach for stealing or kidnapping or I think shekau's hiring. On a more serious note, DO NOT LEAVE THERE UNLESS YOU HAVE A JOB LINED UP FOR YOU.
Please come back to your country. I studied in Canada for 7 yrs and am back home. If you have a passion for Nigeria, come back home.
Linda,as I speak with you I have a Masters gained in the Uk,I'm currently in the states improving myself and working.I dare not return to Nigeria,it's too bloody and rough.Too many bad things going on there.Kudos to the brave ones and heroes who return home!
At first, it may not be easy but my dear is best to come back home.
Make sure you Know people in positions that matter w people Who know Such people. You need that to get Your foot in the door
"Foreigners" are better respected
here.
Linda Approve my comment! Habba!
Linda Approve my comment! Habba!
yeah is better u come back home u will enjoy it. if not for d insecurity in our country.
Hehehe. Funny question !!

Here is it: If you have "Connection" here in Nigeria then come back home, otherwise stay over there and be doing menial jobs until you save enough money that can sustain you for like 2years after coming back to Nigeria.
to be honest plz stay deir make some money den maybe after things settle u could come back. ppl will lie and tell u to com back but plz dont Nigeria is messed up and if u are told we are to make d change , ask yourself how would I help do DAT. if u can't answer just stay in Canada.
madam Linda hopefully u post my comment.
Poster, pls Ask google.
Truthfulness pays!
This will sound unpatriotic but stay there, you got a better chance of making a good life there than here! It's a dog eat dog world down here and only the rich and lucky survive. There millions here who would kill for an opportunity at a menial job in Canada and London. So stay back.
Dnt try comin back cos u will cry lookin for job
All the best!
For me, I'll rather stay abroad. 9ja is getting hotter by d day.
Same here dear even though mine was 2010. I don't even regret not processing my passport sef
Not in Canada man. You can work 2 menial jobs here and be better of than someone who works in a bank in Nigeria
Well, if u ar nt scared of dis our BH palava, u might consider comin. But otherwise, maybe u shuld sit ur a** down thr and kip doin ur thin
Nigerian army is recruiting from sambisa forest tins..yeye
I've read through the comments and what I noticed is people think whenever u work abroad you are doing a below the table or laborer job. smh. it is not so. Like I said if you are in the US get a good resume and prove yourself. the company will never want u to go. I know it is not really the same in the UK (so I heard). Think about it well, opportunity comes but once.
The choices is urs
Best comment yet...Come back home
He is definitely not in the usa. Education is d only security here. A degree=a good paying job. Even a diploma is good enough. Am sure ur in d uk
My advice is simple and probably the best u will get so listen carefully. Work menial jobs der(am sure u r in UK cos US and canada grads usually get decent jobs) for one year or two. D key is to save enough money am talking at least 1million naira and THEN u come home to start your own business and b ur own boss

God Bless
Lmao @ witches and wizards
What are you writing Biko?
Come back ooooo,fr u 2 go dia ur family ve moni or connection.our opinion no mata so y waste our tym?
~@iamJbankz Olamide's PA~
my brother , how wil u leave a country where security is high, for a country where security is nothing to write home about. a country where u hav 24 hours electricity for a country where there is always power failure. think of d high rate of kidnaping n ritualist in Nigeria. pls better stay back. is not only about d money but about ur safety first.
brother, pls stay back ohhhh , people er risking dia lives crossing desert cus of unemployment n boko haram, here u er think of going back home? u better rethink
'I too I'm studying abroad'. Isn't that evidence you need a refund too? Crackhead.
Cheers! **WISEONE**
It's menial darling not 'maniac... #thankmenow
U can only get a job in Nigeria if u know the company owner a politician or someone working in High level human resources. If u don't, pls stay where u are it is not as easy as it seems....people abroad always think it is lounging all the way in 9ja till they come back Then they start regretting.
Linda this question is from u so am not giving u any answer. Period. Post my comment ooo!
Best advice is d one you give to urslf. Think wisely.perhaps when you're went there, do you seek advice for any of us?
....CYNTHIA....commenting from my TOYOTA CRICKET
Stay abroad if you have the right papers otherwise go back.
If you have a good job please stay in Europe.
See dis mumu! U wan tell eerybody say u study abroad... infact come back, theres enough job opportunities in chibok, borno state. Dr chris
U beta stay dere I pity for u o if u try cone back
First there is nothing like being "better than those back home".
*Kelly Crush*
Maniac job indeed. Thatz y u dont hav a job
Wat if poster has residency abroad
Enough said
Why don't you call Nigeria Immigration Services (NIS) for more information?
It depends on you really. From the experience of my children ,one had a
second class upper in chemical engineering from University College London but was in UK for a year after and could not get a job. She came home did her youth service and
within a few months after she got a job in Shell.
Hian! maniac job ko madness job ni...

Come back home before u kill sum1 & blame it on migration laws.
Don't mind them jare, come back home BRT, Lastma needs staff even Military are recruiting now cos of Boko Haram, hope you get muscles!
Linda another bomb blast in jos
This little faggoty rat u no get work ni?
Please come back home we need able-bodied men to enroll in the army# bringbackourgirlsthing#
lol @ maniac job. ..
Hahahahahhahahahahahah clown!
U better stay there, u won't find even a menial job for naija oo.
U better stay there, u won't find even a menial job for naija oo.
U better stay there, u won't find even a menial job for naija oo.
I advise u remain there bcos d rate of unemployment in Nigeria is high
Dude come back home and start a business, u will surely make it big time. Visit Naijainvest.blogspot.com there are lots of opportunities waiting for you
Maniac job keh? I don't think so dear "Hismajesty".
People should proof read comments before posting. Basic things like this speak volumes of the kind of person you are.
I will prefer to stay back with the menia jobs and let my Kids enjoy beter and standard education. Afterall I'm doing it for a purpose
>VIA TECNO P3
Good luck!
Nawao. Bekee bu agbara...
Trust God!!
True!
Seriously godwin, u no well sha.. lwkmd
Best comment still. Took that decision in 2012 and I can also say its d best decision taken
Hahhaha... You got him there
It should be a personal decision depending on your condition.
Ds little boi shud keep quiet if he doesn't hv anything meaningful to say
Volumes?
Linda to be with your ''maniac job'' grammar, ha ha ha ha!!!!!!
Clean air, water, civil people, cool neighbours, well mannered citizens, Good healthy food and health care, exceptional security and above all, hope- that you will have a better tomorrow.
Now ask yourself again, do you want to leave all of that for Nigeria?
Hmnnn
I didn't think so too!
*** forst to comment ***
I love u already
Hello, welcome to SHU.
Amount*!? Den be naira???
Lmaoooooo didirin!!!! Watch plate? Safe urself stress??? Stay in school chileee.
All those people that studied in d UK in the past 3 yrs anyway do not have a choice but to return home since UK changed their rules...so thy should stop fronting like going home was a decision they made!
Hmmm... Coming back 2 a country dat is gradually falling apart.#THINK AM WELL WELL
Loooool. Funny chap
you wey dey study abroad, take your eye check am. no dey ask people wey never cross Nigerian boundary if studying abroad is better.
