Alibaba uses Tyrese watch showoff to make case for Nigerian celebs

US actor/singer Tyrese shared a pic of his wristwatch collection on his instagram page, writing that 'the plane has to match the watch so he can get to his destination on time'. (pic on the left). He got a lot of likes and positive comments from his followers.

Nigerian King of comedy Alibaba reposted the pic on his own page and made a case for Nigerian artists and how fans here react to celebrity show off on social media. He said a lot more. See that after the cut...

In the comment section of the post, Alibaba wrote;
Everyone shows off. You work hard to show off. When you take a graduation picture and post it, there are millions who could not sit Jamb. When you are celebrating your baby dedication there are women praying for fruit of the womb. When you tell everyone how you got a great job, many are dying at stadia across the country. As long as its your hard work that got you those things you show off. Do you know showing off your cleavage could also be in that class of your argument? Because there are people that don't have. Some even have had theirs cut off. For me I see such as inspiration. And not show off. Its like saying HEY I USED TO SLEEP AT THE BAR BEACH. BUT SEE WHERE I AM. Because your neighbors. Don't have light you will not put your generator on? Even the people you call poor... Do you know how much support the person you are calling a show off has contributed to that large number of people in need? And if he were to start mentioning them, that will be another case of show off, abi?
"I agree with people buying things they don't need. And the fact that many don't plan. In my 25 years, I have seen stars rise and fall in show business. We are still going to see that happen in the next 25 years. That said, the yardstick used for measuring succes differ from person to person. Depending on what they have gone through. For instance, if I'm on a long haul flight, I do business class. If client got me business, I upgrade. But for a short 1 hour flight, I can do economy. And only do business if I feel like or when travelling with Madam. Now, some people may think because you are in economy, it means you are broke. Meanwhile, on that row of economy seat, there is a real estate lord, with over 35 properties scattered all over Lagos. But some passenger, 2 seats away from you is thinking see that young artiste in business class, but This Ali Baba is in economy. Unknown to them, someone far richer than Ali Baba is sitting next to him. The flip side of this story is that the young artiste, may nit have kids and responsibilities. So he is allowed to live loud. Then there is the untold dynamics of showbiz. The young artiste may be going to perform with his crew for 5m... I may be going for the same event for, let me be generous and say half the amount the young artiste is paid. At the end of the event, I come home with 90% of my fee, the young artiste will come home with maybe 50%... But to the passenger two seats behind, that don't count. To him, seat in business class. You can go home and drink Garri. Just look good for me. So the artiste is torn between making the fan see him as making it or living his realities. On the others hand, when an artiste doesn't show off, the fans are fed gists of other artistes living the life, then the fan begins to conclude, if the papers say he is not making it, they should know. So the fans begin to believe what they read and see. So the artiste is on a long thing in the end. Finally, much as I agree with many people in need and not rubbing affluence in their face, celebrating success should be an inspiration to those working hard
"I totally totally agree. Most people in Business Class need to go to business class( school) to understand that a business's class ticket is not an investment unless you have crossed certain boxes investment wise. I has invested in other tangible assets before I invested in nice cars. Cars are the bane of many men, women don't make it easy either cos if you no get some type of cars , they don't consider you serious. But what we don't understand is that in America you can rent a Car or lease one in nigeria we pay the full price at once, meanwhile the price of those "cars" can buy a house for the "star" so when the ruff times come( and yes it always comes) you have a fall back. May the God of wisdom enlighten us

But that's not the point though, the reason why ppl complain is coz a lot of these Nigerian celebs don't obviously have the money and yet they claim to have many designers. Secondly, in Nigeria showing off/vanity is done nearly every day, you hardly see it with the other American rich celeb excluding the rap artist which is a clear example of ppl who do not have money are the ones that show off the most. Thirdly, all these American celebs have foundations and they are philantropist in a huge way, but I don't think that applies to Nigerian on. Yall too selfish!

No I beg to differ, starting from him,how come he doesn't showoff all he got too on social media.
And the treatment is not to all supposed celebrities.
If a Tracy Obonna should post a pix of her newly acquired panties and Gstring,I would conclude she's acting her age,but I won't take same when its coming from an Omotola or a Genyy.
Mind you that Tyrese did it doesn't make it seem good.
We already know he's of the same pedigree with people like Rick Ross.

I agree with him to an extent but I personally believe showin off is a wasta time, nothing lasts forever u show it off today tommorow it disappears wah av u gained? Nobody is taking a damn tin outta dis world its all vanity. If u work hard n ur rich buy d best tins for urself wear em u rily don't av to put it up on instagram telling people how much its worth SO? Na u first buy am 4 d world ? Common reasoning,u work hard u play hard playing hard doesn't mean making noise.Remember we r all like a pin in d face of God,don't matter whether ur married or single,av responsibilities or not,Showing off is a waste of time.

FYI, Tyrese or whatever his name is, doesn't live in a society plagued with problems of all sorts...
stop enriching other intelligent nations of the world with intangible things they produce. Do something for your nation, so that other nations of the world will still consider us intelligent beings...

Everyone shows off? Does he have the stats to prove this? He is using anecdotal evidence over research. Not very smart!

I think he lost the argument with the start of his epistle. He needs to look at the definition of show off again.

He should not confuse achievements with showing off. Big effing difference!!

Alibaba,I respect you a lot but please grow up. That fact Tyrese and others are showing off does not make it right. Must Nigeria celebs always copy their western counterparts? Why don't you try and be like the humbles ones?

Anyway, it's your property, so you can do whatever you like, but ours is a society where people are consumed with hate and jealousy. Better not to draw negative attention to oneself, if you know what I mean. Mere marriage anniversary attracts negative comments.

Alibaba shut the fuck up sir. So America where men are permitted to invade each other's buttholes while their children watch all in the name of being same sex parents is now the standard on how to behave ethically? If God has blessed you..be thankful..i think the unwarranted display of worldly possessions is extremely childish and bush to say the least. Do u ever see or hear about the people with "REAL MONEY" doing this? Behavior like this is reserved for the MMR (money miss roads) and you are apparently one of them going by your judgment.

While I think it is the right of anyone to flaunt their material wealth or otherwise,I think some people do it for sheer self aggrandisement without thinking about its retrogressive effect. The reason why Tyrese can flaunt his watch's and a Nigerian probably shouldn't is because Tyrese is an American and a citizen of a super-power nation. Nigeria on the other hand has 70% of it citizen living below the porverty line. How is someone who can't afford to eat supposed to view this 'show off'? Let me put this in another way. In the early 90's during the Somalian war, there was a world wide appeal for donations to save Somalia from starvation as people were dying of hunger there. Should someone like successful Somalian singer,K'nan have posted pictures of where he is eating a sumptuous meal with assorted meat so everyone can know how successful he is? Ali Baba has to put the African context into this. What works in a rich country isn't always what will work in a fucked up country like Nigeria.

i totally agree with Alibaba a 100%. Personally, I have no reservations against the show of affluence, as long as you work it, please flaunt it! There will always be poor people, barren people, uneducated people, all the downside works. That has nothing to do with success stories showing off! if you do not like it, shut your eyes, or pray to be there someday. I have been "oppressed' by the wealthy times without number, it does not upset me one bit, I know one day am gonna be there, and when I get there, una go hear! Meanwhile in my own small cocoon o, I dey oppress people well well sef..... mschiewt life! abeggy Alibaba flaunt every thing and pay zero attention who only have the power to be heard via a blog!

Angie said...

I do agree with him, but not entirely..Maybe, their line of business demands for them to show off to get gigs, don't know.
There's something called humility, though. When you have enough responsibilities; wife, kids, parents, siblings etc, maturity comes in.. People will always talk no matter what; so why not just focus on your destination.
I believe it's only those with low self esteem that usually care what people think of them; especially when you know you've achieved a lot more than than you need..n still on it!
All those show offs of things with expiry date are very immature in my opinion.

I also read the article as encouraging braggadocio even when it lacks a foundation in order to keep up with people's expectations. Look, just because some American celebrities are doing it doesn't make it right. There are a lot of American celebrities richer than Tyrese who don't brag or flaunt. Oprah is a great example. Does he realize dis can lead weak men and women to sin. Dat Tyrese or whoever did it doesn't make it right. Even at dat d level of poverty in Nigeria is so abysmal dat any show off seems nauseating. My position still remains dat illiteracy and poverty mentality is stil a big part of d reason why they do this. I will start believing Alibaba when d likes of Bill Gates, Warren Buffet and even our own Dangote start doing same. Abi is theirs not handwork and worthy achievement? This Alibaba is so full of it. He should starting acting his age for Christ's sake. So, because Tyrese posted a picture of his watch collections and some people liked, that all of a sudden has become a justification for vanity? When have the likes of Tyrese and his American fans become the yardstick for good moral values for us in Nigeria? Truth be told, there are those things that are alien to us in Africa, showing off and unnecessary vain glory are part of them, and no amount of indulgence in those vices in foreign lands would make them acceptable in Africa. If I may ask, why do we criticize and condemn guy people in Africa, when they are mostly accepted and integrated into the society abroad? Why couldn't the likes of Alibaba argue against the anti guy laws because of the acceptance of that style of life in most of the western world? If I'm not mistaken, Alibaba himself commended the government for passing and signing it into law.
Furthermore, there is a difference between living the life of luxury and posting pictures of your living such life in the media. Our society does not frown at the former because, it is generally accepted that when you have worked hard and achieved success, you can enjoy the fruits of your labour. But the society frowns at the later because of its attendant consequences. Believe you me, one of the main causes of armed robbery in our society is the undue and unwarranted display of wealth going on in the society.
So, the US and the western world are not and will never be our yardstick for measuring values. Both societies are different. While one is well advanced and developed, the other is not, and will be quite susceptible to bad influence. We will never stop in challenging bad acts in our society, no matter how the western world sees it.
Finally, Alibaba, I will only indulge you a bit, if you are able to show me the pictures of responsible and very reputable celebrities abroad who are deliberately and wantonly showing pictures of their material acquisitions on social media, not the likes of Tyrese.

You don't have to flaunt wealth to the point of disgust to tell d world u work hard for ur money. Matured Billionnaires don't show off. Their assets speak for them. Go to forbes and check the list of the world richest ppl. Their vision, focus and determination has brought them where they are. Real men have so many biz plan on his mind than showing off on instagram. When a wise man meets luck he plans but when a fool man meets luck he boast. Be wise nothing last forever.

Yardstick for measuring success definitely differs frm person to person esp wen materialistic things're involved. Chika Ike can measure hers by carefully arranging designer bags on a bed, stand in front of an expensive hotel and tk a picture while a G.O. can go round d world and spread d gospel....#DefineUrs

Is America Nigeria. this analogy makes a lot of sense... NOT

But then, who is the writer? Isn't it Alibaba who years ago put up his breakfast plate of massive cholesterol (greasy sausages, fried eggs, fifty slices of bread, baked beans) for the world to see? His 'show off' depicted his class and 'mind'...hence his school of thought. What you see is what you get. No point getting irritated by these 'show offs' lol!

Can u give me 10 reasons why u agree with him?. Who's talking about show-off in Nigeria now, when we are faced with mass death. Pls tell him to go Ω̴̩̩̩̥‎ donate blood to his fans at d hospital(Nyanya victims) than going through likes n comments online.

If they like they should put pictures of their newly acquired mistresses or boxers no one cares! The fact is that people with real money don't show off.how many times have you seen Dangote putting a picture of his new private jet or new mansion, never because we know he has the money and he doesn't need to say a thing or put up pictures!!!!!!

the difference is that Tyrese own dey original most nigerian celebs na kpanda dem dey show

Ali-Baba you picked the wrong person to use as an example. Tyrese is African American that behaves like the typical boastful Nigerian (that will not let anyone hear word when they acquire something). Think of it why aren't people like Oprah, Bob Johnson, Obama and Bill gates doing it? Food for thought.

Alibaba should shut up Abeg. Is he a child? Does he need someone to tell him our culture is different from theirs? Does he think the way foreigners think is the way we Africans and Nigerians think? Just because we are wearing mordern clothes and acting mordern doesn't mean we've lost all our culture. We still have a culture built from hundred thousand years of history. It may be fading but not completely gone. Just the same way he would want his wife to cok and clean, is the same way we don't want to see our celebrities naked and foolish. It's your culture but you want to pick and choose at your age and size.... With all Nigerians problems we should be promoting buying extremely expensive items abi? Are we not already ostentatious enough?

Alibaba is a fool. Na d curse wey dey curse am for linda ikeji blog dat time naim still dey bite I'm pant. Nor be our fault say the tie and belt razz na.

That's why I like lindi, still humble with all her gettings, hope these celebs read about themseves and their fan's opinion, think it will help them stay focused, though Lindi is gradually joining in the show off ,still love her style of doing it.As for Ali and his opinion,he's right, different folks with different strokes.

U are saying he should not talk because there is mass death in the country, don't u go to work? Don't you still eat delicious meal when you know ppl are dying? Don't u still put ur carrot pennis into some stupid girls dat u deceive? So alibaba can't address other issues because there is bomb blast... Nigga wake up, jealousy is another form of witchcraft

... and because tyres shows off and his fans cheer him, that makes it right? Poor thinking from someone who should know (alibaba). Everyone has a right to show off or not. Likewise, when you put your private biz in public space you have to take all sorts of comments in good faith. We don't dictate how celebrities live, they should not dictate our responses to their publicity stunts

I read the first line and decided it was a peice of crap not worth reading "you work hard to show off" No I work hard to enjoy the fruit of my level, I agree with the commentator who said poverty get levels. There are some people who would be content with an old BMW and others with a Jet why? because hard work and success of an individual also has its own level, people these days are competing about how best they can out do another others the competition is with themselves how best they can make it to have a happy life. Happieness depends on you- only you can make yourself happy not other people GET REAL... what so and so is doing let me do instead of let me do what i can IF EVERYONE JUMPS OFF A BRIDGE WILL YOU TOO? Cut the bullshit
