To Sadiq Abacha - on behalf of Wole Soyinka by Ayo Sogunro

Sadiq Sani Abacha gets the first reply to his open letter to Prof. Wole Soyinka from writer/activist, Ayo Sogunro. Read below and tell us what you think...
I do not know you personally, but I admire your filial bravery - however misguided - in defending the honour of your father, the late General Sani Abacha. This in itself is not a problem; it is an obligation—in this cultural construct of ours - for children to rise to the defence of their parents, no matter what infamy or perfidy the said parent might have dabbled in.
The problem I have with your letter, however, arises from two issues: (i) your disparaging of Wole Soyinka, who—despite your referral to an anecdotal opinion that calls him as “a common writer”—is a great father figure, and a source of inspiration, to a fair number of us young Nigerians; and (ii) your attempt to revise Nigerian history and substitute our national experience with your personal opinions. Continue...
Therefore, it is necessary that we who are either Wole Soyinka’s “socio-political” children, or who are ordinary Nigerians who experienced life under your father’s reign speak out urgently against your amnesiac article, lest some future historian stumble across the misguided missive, and confuse the self-aggrandized opinions of your family for the perceptions of Nigerians in general.
Your letter started with logical principles, which is a splendid common ground for us. So let us go with the facts: General Sani Abacha was a dictator. He came into power and wielded it for 5 years in a manner hitherto unprecedented in Nigerian history. Facts: uncomfortable for your family, but true all the same.

Now, for my personal interpretations: between 1993 and 1998 inclusive, when your dada was in power, I was a boy of 9 to 14 years and quite capable of making observations about my political and cultural environment. Those years have been the worst years of my material life as a Nigerian citizen. Here are a few recollections: I recollect waking up several mornings to scrape sawdust from carpentry mills, lugging the bags a long distance home, just to fuel our “Abacha stoves” because kerosene was not affordable—under your father. I recollect cowering under the cover of darkness, with family and neighbours, listening to radio stations—banned by your father. I recollect my government teacher apologetically and fearfully explaining constitutional government to us—because free speech was a crime under your father’s government. Most of all, I remember how the news of your father’s death drove me—and my colleagues at school—to a wild excitement, and we burst into the street in delirious celebration. Nobody prompted us, but even as 13 and 14 year olds, we understood the link between the death of Abacha and the hope of freedom for the ordinary man.

These are all sorry tales, of course. Such interpretations would not have occured to the wealthy and the privileged under your father’s government, but they were a part of the everyday life of a common teenager under that government. The economics were bad, but the politics were worse. And I am not referring to Alfred Rewane, Kudirat Abiola and the scores killed by the order of your father. Political killings are almost a part of every political system, and most of those were just newspaper stories to us. In fact, I didn’t get to read most of the atrocities until long after your father died. So, these stories did not inform the dread I personally felt under your father’s regime. And this was true for my entire family and our neighbours.

Instead, the worry over our own existence was a more pressing issue. Your father, Sani Abacha was in Aso Rock, but his brutality was felt right in our sitting room. We were not into politics and we didn’t vocally oppose Abacha, yet we just knew we were not safe from him. You see, unlike any dictatorship before or after it—your father’s government personally and directly threatened the life and freedoms of the average Nigerian. Your father threatened me. And if your father had not died, I am confident that I would not be alive or free today.
Think of that for a while.

Now, let’s come to Wole Soyinka. First: you can never eradicate the infamy of your father’s legacy by trying to point out the failings of another Nigerian. Remember what you said: A is A.  Abacha is Abacha. And no length of finger pointing will wash away the odious feeling the name of Abacha strikes up in the mind of the average Nigerian. Second: Don’t—as they musician said—get it twisted: Wole Soyinka did not antagonize your father just because he was a military man—Wole Soyinka was against your father’s inhumanity. Your father was intolerant of criticism beyond belief.

Your father made military men look bad. Your father’s behaviour was so bad it went back in time and soiled the reputation of every military man before him. Your father, finally, made Nigerians swear never—ever—to tolerate the military again. Soyinka may have worked with the military before—but your father ensured that he will never work with the military again. Do you see? Three: Evil comes in many forms: there is no qualification by degree. There is no “good” evil thing. Sani Abacha, Boko Haram, Hitler, slavery—they all fit into the same category of misfortunes. Soyinka is right: Abacha was just as bad as Boko Haram is—deal with it. Four: Soyinka has been kind enough to limit his criticism to the unenviable awards this inept government has given your father. But, you see, in a saner political system, we wouldn’t just ignore your father, we would have gone one step further and expunged the Abacha name from all public records. Wiped without a trace. Abacha would forever be a cautionary tale against the excesses of political power. In a saner political system.

Abacha was brutal—and Soyinka was one of those individuals who gave us inspiration in those dark days. He was part of the team that founded the underground radio station to counter your father’s activities. Let me rephrase in pop culture language: Wole Soyinka was the James Bond to your father’s KGB. Most of the influential people either kept quiet or sang the praises of your father to stave his wrath. But a few like Soyinka spoke, wrote and even went militant against Abacha. But at the end, even Soyinka who never ran from a fight had to run from your father. That was how terrible things were. And now you want Soyinka to join the praise singers of your father? I’m not certain Soyinka has grown old enough to forget how he escaped your father, slipping across the border in disguise. You will have to wait awhile to get that praise from him.

Now, back to you. You have a deluded sense of your father’s role in the progress of Nigeria’s history. Nigeria has managed to be where it is today, not because of leaders like your father—but in spite of leaders like your father. This is a testament to the Nigerian spirit of resilience, and our unwavering optimism in a better future. You owe every Nigerian an apology for daring to attribute this to the leadership of Abacha. Those “achievements” you believe were accomplished under your father were simply all the things he had to do to keep milking the economy, and thereby perpetuate himself in power—they benefited Nigeria only if, by Nigeria, you meant your family and your cronies.

Your tone is that of a white master who justifies his oppression because he clothed and fed his black slaves. That is what your father did. The fact that we choose not to regurgitate, and reflect on that socially traumatic period doesn’t mean we accept it as your entitlement. We have not forgotten, and we will never forget. Sani Abacha raped Nigeria. Your father raped us. Your father raped us and then pressed some change into our hands. And he then tried to marry us forcefully, too. You may think all this is well and good—but then you’ve never been raped before.

But we now live under a democracy—the kind your father denied us—and so you are free to talk. And so you are free to insult the people who ensured that your father had sleepless nights. Had the revolution your father rightly deserved happened, you—and the rest of your family—would have been lined against a wall, before you could pen one article, and shot.
And we would probably have cheered.

But we live under a democracy now—a system of government where even the scions of former oppressors can talk, and write freely, about the benefits of dictatorship. That’s a democracy. A concept your father wouldn’t have understood.

Regards,
Ayo Sogunro

I remember the day abacha died I was writing my final exams, the lecturers where sooooo happy even the most straight and no nonsense ones allowed us to cooperate. They rush in shouting the oppressor of Nigeria has died please feel free to cooperate. I was very happy. That his son should quietly go and enjoy their ill gotten wealth and leave prof wole Soyinka alone.

In order countries, even in germany, germans are still ashamed of hitlers behaviour till date....so thank you for even pointing out how terrible even this present governement is for giving him abacha an award. We need to stop celebrating mediocrity and injustices then hide it under bureaucracy/diplomacy!.

The facts are clear, bring out figures dosen't make any difference to the average Nigerian! Don't forget its what they experienced is is what they care about not GDP, or oil barrel prices.

Anonymous said...

The issue with most LIBERS is that you comment out of ignorance, while some comment out of tribal/religious sentiment. Whether you believe or not, abacha was the best president Nigeria ever had except GEJ by the grace of God will surpass his records. We all know during abacha’s time, a bag of rice was sold for 2000 naira, fuel was sold for 11 naira per litre, dollar exchange rate was 88 naira per dollar, school fees were cheap, food stuffs were cheap,PTF contructed road and PTF hospitals were giving out free drugs,we saw little queues in our filling stations, roads were routinely maintained by PFT” Petroleum trust fund”,mind you Nigeria’s crude at that time was 8$ per barrel compared to 90$ per barrel which its being sold now. Fact is, the money OBJ stole in 1yr, abacha probably didn’t steal up to that in all his years in govt. pple called him a murderer but obj did worst than abacha in terms of killings. OBJ wipe out two communities , village named ODI in bayelsa and another one in ZAKI BIAM. Who killed bola ige, harry marshall, dikibo etc? OBJ siphoned 16billion dollars meant for power construction yet no one is talking about it, OBJ and ATIKU were involved in Siemens/ecological fund diversion, yet nothing happened. IBB on his own case diverted 8billion dollar oil money made from the sale of crude oil during his tenure. How come wole Soyinka didn’t mentioned IBB’S name as corrupt?? Is it because dead pple don’t speak? We all knew how WOLE SOYIKA diverted monies which he couldn’t account for when he was made ROAD SAFETY CHAIRMAN. It’s on record that when IBB called him to give him report and account for some missing monies, he couldn’t account for them, hence IBB mocked him concerning it,and told him that rulling Nigeria is not as easy as those criticizing him thought. Abacha was only accused of stealing 2 billion dollars, yet today sanusi couldn’t account for about 200 billion naira, nnpc cant account for 20 billion dollars, obasanjo couldn’t account for 16 billion dollars, ibb couldn’t account for 8 billion dollars, bankole stole 9 billion, the list is endless. The question here is , WHO IS THE BIGGER THIEF??? Abacha was better than all these guys, the propaganda against him was being instigated by the west who thought they could control him and steal our oil but he refused and chased all of them away.

Ayo Sogunro, thanks bro. While reading this piece,i could only reflect on the past horror i went through during the reign of Abacha.i was an undergraduate at Unilorin, and had to stay at home for 8 months, some of our best lectures were sacked by Prof. Oba with the backing of Sadiq's father.
During this period my family experienced the worst of living conditions.
Abacha years bring tears to my eyes.

He stated how Nigerians are hopeful for the future despite that fact the past is the past and even though we move forward to a better Nigeria that can never change. Fair enough u wan make sleeping dogs lay....but no be abacha son wey open up wounds?..go talk to him. Forgiven or forgotten or neither there are some things some people should not take for granted because people choose to forget and he should learn that now before they kill him (abacha's son)

How would u like it if someone who has drastically hurt u or a friend of that person brings it up after u have tried to forgive and forget u

I was also a child during the Abacha era, but I remember how everyday was filled with despair, and how there was so much fear everywhere.
Tomorrow was uncertain, and nobody dared to complain.
Abacha was a terror. If Nigerians had a say in the matter, do you think he could EVER get voted in?
We would still consider a lot of our ex military leaders (Obasanjo, Buhari, even Babangida) but nobody in their right senses will EVER EVER willingly vote Abacha into power, and that says a lot.
I commend Sadiq for being a good son and defending his father, but sometimes, silence and atonement goes a longer way

Yes, they should lay low BUT, to be fair, no mother will agree her own child is bad- hence, the children rising to defend their father.
Has it ever occurred to you that, to Abacha's children, all the atrocities levied against him where mostly false and that what they knew he did infact was only to make certain there was enough money to sustain them for their entire lifetime?
Very possibly, all of history may have been interpreted to mean- to them- that their father was greatly hated for being a shrewd and no-nonsenes military man.
Except for some of his sons which I believe, with their maturity, he must have introduced, inducted and made familiar with his quite esoteric mode of wasting away lives undercover- just like the Mafioso.
I have an uncle, who, incidentally, doubles as the king of our village and this man is the most atrocious jazz man you can think of- he does all sorts, wears all kinds of rings, he's just plain occultic, wicked and evil but, do you know what his children think and say of him?
"You know, my dad is rather very unassuming and simple- forget all you hear about him- he is a very simple man who truly cares for others that is why he always is interested in others- to be sure they are doing well".
At some point, I begun to think his children's sole purpose was to dig out info about your life so as to go right back to their evil father and hand him the details.
Fortunately, I cut off ALL of them- social media, phone contacts, in every concievable means of contact.
Those kids will die for their father regardless of if you present them with proof of the evil, wicked and devilish ways of their father.
Most members of the family, at some point, due to the inexplicable hardship or certain mysterious turn of events, resorted to calling men of God to pray for their houses in the village and, you'd see different kinds, shapes and sizes of charms which had been buried in their homes being dug out.
Abacha's children are clearly stupid and have no shame else, I see no reason that, with the myriad of evidence, history and encyclopedias written against their father, they can still muster the effrontery to give a response.
The most they could have done was keep silent but, then again, a man hopes his kids can fight for him whether he be dead or alive.
Whatever.
The wise ones will keep silent.

Abacha's regime was a nightmare, no matter how small one was then, Abacha almost derived us all of respiration if not for God. The political atmoshere was filled with atmomic disspear.

The Abacha's should go and bury themselves in shame, they almost made us lose hope in NIGERIA. Abacha's death gave us a breath oof resuscitation.

Ayo is right. Very right. But Wole Soyinka was unfairly selective and perhaps somewhat hypocritical.
For instance where do you draw the line of moral bankruptcy? . Is Wole Soyinka proud to share the honour with Ibrahim Babangida?. If the answer is yes, what does that say of Soyinka himself? Was it not in Babangida's time that Dele Giwa was parcel bombed- the first of its kind in Nigeria? It was also Babangida that made corruption a national pastime. Abacha was not any more corrupt than Babangida, he was just less smart and more crude. The Nigerian economy started on a self destructive free fall with the introduction of SAP by Babangida in 1986. Above all Babangida violated the corporate will of the Nigerian people with the annulment of the June 12 elections with the attendant destruction and chaos. This paved the way for Abacha to seize power. So in effect Abacha was a product of Babangida's misadventure. So please tell me how is Abacha worse than Babangida? My guess? Babangida is Wole Soyinka's friend. Abacha was not.
Otherwise can Soyinka explain why he singled out Abacha?

Linda pls do me a favour n make sure u post my comment cos this is my first time ever to comment on d blog.

Now, as for Gumsu and Sadiq,I can understand u guys defending ur father,he is ur father afterall. But to come out to openly insult ANY Nigerian after what your father put us through is arrant Nonsense. Thank you Ayo,I remember vividly the days of using Sawdust to cook cos Kerosene was too expensive. I remember everyone feeling like we were in prison even though I was a child during his regime. And oh,how I remember very well the day Abacha died. I was ill that day but I jumped and jubilated like everyone else. And it was my birthday! I told God he had given me the best birthday present ever and for 2/3 years after that day, when anyone asked for my birthday I always gladly said "I gave Nigeria the best present, my birthday is the day Abacha died". It was wrong n I don't do that anymore, but that just shows you d kinda sick, perverted happiness we all derived from your father's death. Now please by all means, love your father and the memories you have of him as a father. But don't remind Nigerians of him, because to us he was a tyrant and dictator of the worst kind.

Just as we are reading the open letters let not forget the same people worked with Abacha are the same people re-grouping under APC,Tom Ikimi,Buhari,Tom David West ETC...Are they not the same people that worked with same man Abacha?..So are we really free from Abacha and his remnants? My answer is No..

Well written Ayo .... This is a wonderful and very explicit open letter... Sadiq Abacha should be thought on a better way to talk to her elders and better still we Nigerians that suffered the brutality of her fathers dictartirship rule. I remembered the day Abacha died, I was still in secondary school and as a border.. We jubilated that day upon I didn't understand so well then but I very well know that Abacha was a dreaded tyrant if I may rightly say. May God direct our leaders..Long life FRN.

Please, Sadiq who relayed that part of history to U? Ur dad's rotten soul from the dead or Ur bastard of a Mum that could not call Ur devilish father to order?

If U were too young to know what tyranny Ur Dad perpetuated as a dictator, pls visit the archives anywhere in the world and read the papers back then. Millions of people could not have been wrong about Ur Dad so shut the fuck up and be quiet!!

Probably your parents or relations benefitted directly from the abacha junta. Even as a primary school kid, I remember vividly when he died, the joy and jubilation around the streets. General diya lived few streets away, armored vehicles everywhere. It was terrible as a child. Yet you say rubbish. They are living large on your money and you are glad.

No one could have said it better! God bless Ayo Sogunro.

Ayo Sogunro is a Chicken said...

This is just unnecessary bashing. Ayo Sogunro, I must say you memory has failed you, you have decided to lie with the dogs and tow the path of foolishness with this article that you wrote.

Even though there valid points therein, your approach isn't any different from the irritant brigandry exuded by Abacha's son. The young man made some salients points which I expected you to acknowledge and flaw. ie His father started PTDF and many benefitted from the free education. Do you know how much good education costs in this country these days? Abacha stove gave many jobs, how many jobs has democracy created for Nigerians?

Let's look at what democracy offers us today, higher fuel prices, bad roads, unsafe aviation industry, woeful educational standard, blinding corruption, political and religious rife, need I continue? Is this the cost of democracy? What is democratic about Obasanjo making Dangote the richest black man in the world while he killed many other local businesses?

I know you will say all these problems were inherited from past governments, even though democracy is 14 years old in this country. How long do we have to wait before enjoy the fruits of Democracy?

Tyranny still exist in this country, it has has just taken many other forms. ie Jonathan and Ameachi, Tinubu and the South-west, Boko-haram and Northern Nigeria... These acts or actions are pre-meditated crimes that deprived millions of their rights and future.

In short, I don't blame the young man for honoring his father name, I blame people like Ayo Sogunro who will jump at the slightest opportunity to pick a fight with past rather than stand firm and fight for the future.

Do something about the future of Nigeria and leave Abacha alone.

Posterity will judge you too.

I also went to school with one of his sons and saw the excessive waste of our Nation's resources and tax payer's money. Abacha's family should please go back into the hole where they came out of. All these Abachas really need to shut up. If Nigeriia isn't such a forgiving country, people like Sadiq and gumsu or whatever the heck her name is should have been ostracized out of the nigerian society. I was also a child during the Abacha regime about 6/7 years old is the earliest I can remember and I'll never forget the constant terror felt right in the living room of my grandfather at the mention of his name. In fact, nobody dared to mention that name because we were of the impression that he had spies working and every negative thing said against his regime could mean death for us. I feel a pang of anger at how they sit comfortable with their immerse wealth after their father trampled upon destinies, reigned with terror. We may not have achieved much after Abachas regime but I do not live in fear, I can criticize the government as I please, and whether we like it or not, that is progress. Memory does not fail a few of us and the sins of the Abachas, and babangida have not be forgotten. They should better shut up and enjoy their wealth because if some1 like me ever gets to power, they will certainly pay for the sins of their father. Nitwits!

Pellow fiful of Nigeria I could still remember the thanksgiving and jubilation because we still had freedom of religion and speech! Anyone still remember the cartoons & jokes that the devil gave abacha wood, fuel & matches to go and build his own hell cos the existing hell could not contain the both of them? That was how bad it was! Inasmuch as we don't ever fight back, we are not ignorant people! Thank u Ayo!

It's a sad day in Nigeria history because I was detained during Abach's regime. My offence being my involvement in a pro democracy conference in South Africa organised by Dr Ola Soyinka. My only prayer is that Abacha's children never experience what we did during those years of terror!!

Ayo ur such a big Yoruba bigot. The boy Sadik stated the fact whether we like it or not. Soyinka should have respected himself and leave the dead, dead! You can see the level of primitive ways we Nigerians think. Once someone voices his opinion or fact, it turns out to a quarrel. I'm from the south south, to be precise bayelsa state. I was in junior secondary school the, people actually celebrated his death.

part of Abacha and military left over till today is uniform men taking public buses without paying.

that is an example of a very minor injustice that charactierised that period.

someone should ask sadiq, will he like to be killed the way Ken Saro Wiwa and the other Ogoni men were killed.

Imagine someone hang you and still pour acid on you to be sure you are death.

I am sure Abacha is soemwhere in the deepest part of hell.

I still cry for the future of this nation. Most of our youths are only interested in irrelevant stories, forgetting that someday they will be saddled with the responsibilities of leadership. Most of the people here are either too young during the regime of the tyrant or are just not interested in the history of their own nation. No wonder we now have a country with low moral standards. It's a big shame people are not ready to learn. Learn to develop interest in the history of your own country. Enough said already. Thanks AYO, you have tried your best to enlighten the younger generation.

Abacha, supposedly stole Nigeria's money ba, ok, Abacha stole about $30-$50bn according to his accusers, toh, the $20bn dollars that is missing now, no one will say anything, the 2 - 7 million barrels of oil, being sold everyday, no one is asking about it, the trillions of Naira being made every month no one will ask where is it going to but you are focused on Abacha, oh Abacha this Abacha that.

This Abacha that they hate so much, he oversaw an increase in the country's foreign exchange reserves from $494 million dollars in 1993 to $9.6 billion by the middle of 1997, reduced the external debt of Nigeria from $36 billion in 1993 to $27 billion by 1997, brought all the controversial privatization programs of the Babangida administration to halt, reduced an inflation rate of 54% inherited from Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida to 8.5% between 1993 and 1998, all while the nation's primary commodity, oil was at an average of $9 per barrel. His administration is also credited with creating the most comprehensive and realistic blueprint for Nigeria's development through the Vision 2010 committee chaired by his predecessor Ernest Shonekan.

Toh what have did the other military rulers IBB, Buhari, n co achieve? But no one goes on ranting about them they focus on how, "bad" Abacha is, as far as I am concerned, Abacha was a saint compared to others.
