Nigerian doctor attacks female patient who disagreed with diagnosis

A Nigerian doctor allegedly attacked a female patient in his surgery when she disagreed with his diagnosis, UK Daily Mail reports.
Dr Abiodun Bale, 42, (pictured above) grabbed Sheena Cunningham as she tried to leave his consultation room in tears after they argued over treatment for a facial condition.
The doctor from Nigeria denied assault when he appeared in court but was found guilty after a two-day trial. He was given a six-month  conditional discharge but will face a disciplinary hearing at work and could lose his job.
Bale, who qualified as a doctor at the University of Lagos in 1995, worked as a gynaecologist in his home country before coming to Britain and registering with the General Medical Council in 2006.

He was given a licence to practice here in November 2009 and was on a placement, for specialty GP training, at Hyndburn Medical Practice in Accrington, Lancashire, when the assault happened on March 26.

Eddie Harrison, prosecuting, said Bale had asked Mrs Cunningham to come in to the practice after a telephone consultation about a problem with her face, during which she had become distressed.
When she arrived, the doctor told Mrs Cunningham she might need to call for an ambulance if her condition deteriorated later when the surgery was closed.
Mr Harrison told Burnley Magistrates’ Court: ‘She didn’t want to do this and at this point he raised his voice.’

Mrs Cunningham was frightened, got up to leave and said she wanted a second opinion, the court was told. ‘[Bale] became agitated and, as she stepped out, he grabbed her hand to prevent her closing the door,’ Mr Harrison said.
‘He then grabbed her by the forearm with both hands and tried to drag her back into the room. She screamed and shouted at him to get off her arm. This attracted the attention of another doctor and two cleaners. The other doctor told Bale to go back into his office and then escorted Mrs Cunningham out of the surgery.’

The court was told that a week earlier the GP, who lives in  Manchester, ‘flipped’ at another patient, shouting at her: ‘For God’s sake, I have other people to see besides you.’ ‘She got up to leave and he tried to grab her hand. She felt frightened and vulnerable,’ said Mr Harrison.
Bale claimed the incident with Mrs Cunningham was a misunderstanding, saying: ‘I’m a  doctor, not a thug.’

But Mr Harrison said: ‘There was no mistake or misunderstanding. She was crying so loudly that two ladies outside heard her crying.’
After the allegations, the GMC placed conditions on how Bale worked, including allowing him to carry out consultations only if another qualified medical practitioner was present.
The Pennine Acute Hospitals Trust, which employs Bale, said he would face disciplinary  proceedings.

‘The trust will now consider the consequences for his ongoing employment and training,’ a spokesman said.

Lack of proper re-orientation on the Uk human right laws and culture. U could almost do that in Nigeria and the person in question might not be that offended and as a result would not want a legal action be taken against the doctor.Nigerians please as you arrive any foreign country (Eu, Asia, America, including other African countries etc) drop the Nigerian part of you 'talking about your freedom to do all things as you feel" even things that do not get you offended when some one else does it to you.Be very careful, talking with personal experience. 32ddb52c

Silly man. I bet that's how he's been behaving whilst in Nigeria.
If you know you cannot control your temper, don't bother going into vocations where you'd have to interact with people. Sit behind a computer, and take out your anger on your keyboard sef. Yeye man, serves him right.
His lack of self control will get him into bigger trouble if he doesn't change. I just hope he's learned his lesson.
And you guys talking frustration, stress at the home front, blah blah blah... You're just justifying bad behaviour.
You, not anyone else is responsible for your actions and your emotions. People can do things to you, but your response and your reaction is entirely up to you.
You can't be running around saying your wife and your kids are always giving you stress so you'd misbehave.
I once dated a guy that everything used to irritate, the colour pink, nail extensions, hair extensions, somethings that you say (and you won't know until you've said them). I got tired, and told him, it's not my fault you lack self control and have zero tolerance for life. Thank God I dodged that bullet.

For those of u saying "just grabbing" na from clap dey take dey enter dance oh.
An abusive husband will "just" slap his wife and she'll stay....b4 u know what's happening he'll end up killing her. This doctor was abusive! That's why she was crying. And he grabbed her when she wanted to leave because he knew he messed up. These are all signs of a thug. This sort of behaviour escalates until "just grabbing" becomes "just slapping" then "just stabbing"
Pls don't take these things lightly abeg. Let us progress. Ur doctor isn't ur god or ur boss. U're the one paying them so if u ever feel upset with ur doctor u have every right to leave without being grabbed or scolded. I have no beef with doctors...I'm a med student myself. Linda , I am a very good reader of LIb and I noticed you have posted couple of confusing experience from individual readers for their self benefit, and probably to help some people come out of the shell .
I am a perfect gentle married man with dream of having a nuclear family of father ,mother and children , and God gave myself wife a beautiful baby girl and I love m wife and children ...
Linda , something's actually bugs Me and I request your assistance to throw this letter open to find out people's opinion about my experience in my marriage ...
Before my Married I had Limited knowledge about the marriage of my mother in law ,she is divorced and lives In spain ...
The woman is very nice and I love her as an inlaw but the major problems I am encountering is her  interference in our family affair ....

1 - she takes my wife to parties and most times I get very confused , she usually Use style in informing me that she and my wife will be visiting her younger brother and colleagues in their club house ,sometimes they go to various parties dressing attractive , and even if she will invite me to come along , she will use style and tell me that ......AREYOU NOT COMING WITH US ? Obviously I cannot want to say yes cos I was not prepared ...
Now this places she takes my wife too , they hang out with her younger brother who has got numerous big bang friends who are promiscuous  and this same action has repeated itself more than 4 times ...
I am confused right now , what can I do ?
Or am I too jealous ?
Should I retaliate or divorce ?

I thought about sometimes back when my parents had a party to attend with me , they invited my wife and told her to come over from school because she is till running her masters In a university ... , she came along with unto the party with our baby ....my wife and grandmother abandons 1 year and 5 months baby at home with the nanny and go to the party dressing extremely attractive like those celebrities ....

Please help me and post brilliant suggestions

Anon 3:51pm, I love u so much for ur comment, best so far. People are so irresponsible dese days dat thet don't even wannaa take responsible for der actions. And all dey come here to say is 'don't judge' blahh blahhh. Come on! I reside abroad and we see wah dese monsters call Men do even to der wives. Some beat der wives up and even threaten to kill dem even for d fact dat dey are fully aware of d consequence which is d law. Buh dey persist cos dey are too arrogant. A friend of mine suffered in d hands of her monster husband for 5yrs. He beats her up, drag her in d presence of d kids and she decided not to call d police on him cos she doesn't want him out of d house cos of d kids. Buh fortunately for her, a friend came around to see her and she is not nigerian. He decided to prove d devil in him right and kicked d woman. Immediately d friend called d police and dey were der in numbers even with paramedics. He was arrested. How passionate d woman is abt her marriage, d officers asked if she would like to press any charge against her husband so dat he can go to jail or something. She said NO. They also asked if she wantes him bk into d house or not she said she wants him bk into d house cos of d kids. D end of my story is dat since dat day, he has learnt to behave himself and even help dis woman out with d house shores which he never did. So he's been put in his place since den. So sometimes, taking dat bold step further to put ur foot down is d best. So nigerian men, itKs high time u knew dat such violent and abuse attitude againt women will never be tolerated and abhorred irrespective of where and why. Except d woman decides to die in silence. Good day.

Ur spot on. People dont realize dat racism is at play here. I'm a Nigerian professional living in Canada for yrs and I hv seen a lot. I bet u dis story os not as it seems. O dont condone unprofessionalism at all but theres more to dis dan meets d eye. 1st of all they r not hhappy dat a black man is a professional. Our plave shud be cleaning and other menial jobs. Just turn dis story around and see if d backlash will be d same. Dats y I advise my fellow black professionals to twice at alert. Dont gv dem any weapon 4 attack for dey will surely get u.

Haba, you can't blame it all on the doctor o! The truth is that Doctors working on the NHS are given a very limited amount of time to see each patient- I think its like 10 minutes or so. The time is so limited that many times when I've been to the GP to make a complaint, if I start telling them a second complaint, they'll say sorry, your appointment is out of time, and they'll ask you to book another one.

What I think could have happened is that the guy got really stressed with his schedule, and raised his voice. Then he also forgot that personal space is very important to British people. He must have been tugging on her arm in an attempt to appease her, not knowing he was further infuriating her. Mehn, cultures are different, that's all. And stress is a bad thing. This poor doctor is no monster, even if he needs to be told off for this.

Here in UK grabbing a woman is not acceptable. She could have accused him of something worse. However Linda there are 2 issues at play here. Those who are ready to blame this Dr have no idea of how provocative these white women can be. Bear in mind this is his first offence he has no record of harsh treatment of clients before. Yes Nigerian man can be harsh but believe me this woman was undermining a Dr purely because he is Nigerian. These whites do this to get black Drs removed from their local surgeries. They prefer Arabs or Indians. They are resentful when they come across Africans who have proffessions like medical Drs. I am a senior manager in the NHS. This Dr fell into a racist trap because he is still new to the system. Other black Drs just give them the treatment they want to get rid of them. I bet you there is nothing wrong with her. Drs are free so when they have depression they go to the surgery & waste the Dr's time. The 2nd reason is Linda be careful of the stories about blacks in Daily Mail. I am sure you are aware its a racists paper They are against immigration. Take it with a pinch of salt. They usually report a story with a few white lies or spiced up stories to potray blacks as bogey man. the nickname for that paper even with the whites who are upright is the Daily Maul. They make the story look worse than it is because just man handling someone here will get a DR suspended but the story they wrote can be false

All this idiots jumping into conclusion am sure you idiots have never had an encounter with brits women b4. I can predict that it did not happen the way this white woman has put it. Let's speak in learned terms. When she got in,she was very tensed and he beeing the professional made her understand that, she could be in a critical condition and would need a doctor which is a clear case of a troubled individual. 2: she had doubts because he is Black and as a result became exasperated. 3 for him to say he is not a thug suggest a response to a negative intent from her. 4: when he said there are others waiting,it was just to bring to her notice on his duty of care and with that,it shows she was there on another reason and did not raise her voice as portrayed. 5: he probably held her hands in plead and not with intent of assault, but he being a black man,it probably scared her and she overreacted through a screen.

Med student ify, do u realize dat d patient may have been crying cos she was upset about her condition and d doctor may have been trying 2 enlighten as well as console her but didn't respect his boundaries hence holding her with both hands? I think u shouldn't b too quick to jump to conclusions till u start to practice n deal with some difficult patients with some serious ailments who r in denial. U can't draw up such a conclusion dat he was abusive. I guess wen u start 2 practice n deal wit patients, u'll have a more realistic n fair approach to dis issue. I agree he over stepped his boundary but dats ol we know 4 now. Dis is comin from a med practitioner

If he was a wife beater or previously known for violence, wont that have been published as well, he is a good natured well respected man, God will clear his name in a way much bigger than the devil thought he could tarnish...Dr Bale and Family, we always pray for you....this too will pass.

He has been acquitted of the charge . You wonder why the case was allowed to get to court in the first place. I also noticed that the Daily Mail online UK, the original source of the story, has only added an addendum about the successful Appeal at the bottom of the original page. They are not given it as much prominence as the original story- which is damaging for the Dr's reputation. I learnt they are a Racist paper Moral- not everything is as it seems. http://www.lancashiretelegraph.co.uk/news/11175987.East_Lancs_doctor_s_assault_case_conviction_quashed/

Dear Ms Ikeji,

You published a story: on your blog on 26th December 2013 titled: Nigerian doctor attacks female patient who disagreed with diagnosis :
http://lindaikeji.blogspot.co.uk/2013/12/nigerian-doctor-attacks-female-patient.html

You culled this story from the MailOnline ( Daily Mail UK)

He has been acquitted. He didn't assault his patient:

http://www.lancashiretelegraph.co.uk/news/11175987.East_Lancs_doctor_s_assault_case_conviction_quashed/

Note: the Daily Mail UK has only added this appeal success to the original article-instead of publishing it again on their website to get the attention it deserves too. You must ask yourself why they did this

We must be careful how we interpret what these white people tell us about our people in diaspora. Racism still exists. I hope you will publish this new story-as it will help in repairing the Dr's tarnished image in his native country, Nigeria

Regards,
