The heartbreaking poem a 14yr old girl wrote before she killed herself

Izzy Dix (pictured above), a gifted pupil who had ambitions to go to Oxford University, took her own life after complaining she could no longer cope with being bullied, both at school and online.

‘Izzy would come home and sob in my arms" Her mother Gabbi said "They called her “ugly”, “freak”, “frigid”. If she put her hands up in class, she’d be labelled a “swot” and they’d snigger at her, or make crude comments. They’d exclude her from events, tell her to go home, she wasn’t wanted. They’d turn their backs on her, literally. When she did come home, it didn’t stop, because it doesn’t, these days. They name-called her by text, then online. She’d log onto Facebook and get abuse. Then onto that awful site Ask.fm and be subjected to filth."

14 yr old Izzy committed suicide on September 17th. Her mother explained what happened that night
"When she came home from school that night, she seemed tired and a bit cranky. We had words because I wanted to watch The Great British Bake Off and she didn’t. But there was nothing to suggest she was going to do what she did. I remember she painted her nails - she was so meticulous about how she looked - then went up to her room and did her homework, had a shower, got her bag ready for school, laid out her uniform. I popped in and we had another chat about how the bullying was getting on top of her. It was nothing we hadn’t done 100 times before, and I’d always give her the talk about how she was stronger than the bullies.
‘Then I went downstairs while she got ready for bed. I had a cup of tea and a cigarette — she hates me smoking so I did it outside. I was gone 15 minutes, tops. In that 15 minutes my life was destroyed.’

When she came back inside, Gabbi went back upstairs to see if Izzy was getting into bed, but the bedroom door did not swing back as usual.
‘Something was blocking it, and it was Izzy,’ she says, and breaks down completely.
Her description of the hours that followed is too awful to relate in detail, but she managed to get her daughter’s body down and dial 999, then ran hysterically into the street. Neighbours tried to revive Izzy while she ‘just took off’.

‘It’s all a blur. At one point I ran into a car. A police officer had to restrain me.
‘I remember him saying, “I am so sorry to have to do this” as he got me to the ground.’

Not long before her suicide, Izzy wrote a heartbreaking poem about her ordeal. She called it I Give Up. See it below

to the first person that commented. This isn't a matter or white and black. The shit that goes around in most nigerian public school is seniority, go and get me water lay my bed iron my clothes or i slap you. This is phycological and it can happen to anyone, it has nothing to do with poverty or whatever . May her Soul Rest in perfect peace, Amen.

Don't say they are weak, us Nigerians are toughened by our society, our parents flog us even when we are little, we know reproach from such a young age, do u now want to compare us to white ppl who are less strict, they grow up in a diff environment than we do, i remember in secondary school, though there were cliques n different social classes , i don't remember even imbeciles treated badly..... so there is no comparison . may her soul rest in peace Amen.

So sad! And more sad is d fact that this is slowly creeping into our society as 'modernization, civilization and Hannah-montana-watching-teen-nation' is growing. A lot of our teens r loosing touch with reality and commiting senseless crimes and hurting themselves in a "bid to rid the pain they feel within". Too much TV watching and westernization dats all. The black nation r a strong pple and not weak and not moved to emotional outbursts. Bullying is increasing in our high schools esp private and we need to watch our young ones carefully and always advise and encourage them. Love them with a firm hand and let them know u will beat the sh*t out of anyone that messes with them in any way, form or manner #blackbelthiiiiiiiiiiya. MsCas

Anon@1217 am with you on that. It is a sad end to a promising life. Some children are so self absorbed they don't understand how privileged they are compared to other vulnerable children. A trip to Nigeria volunteering in an orphanage might help. I think the nigerian tourism board could make a lot of money from arranging trips for these kids they can call it culture shock therapy

Its a waste for sth dat would pass she'd grow up and talk abt it and publish her beautiful poem. If there's anyone out there considering suicide dey shld hear this it shall pass whatever it is ur going thru ones there's life there's hope.

Lets be sincere with ourselves. This lady is right. Its not like as if they are week. The issue is that they lack the ability to see past the present. Its not really about being week. I feel its because they lack faith or maybe its religion. Idunno what it is exactly but I know soon enough some nigerian kids would adapt this culture especially the children of the rich as most of them dont know how to cope with life. They feel things are rosey an give up when they find out they arent. I just pray im able to raise my kids in the right way

I was bullied in high school. I was bullied till I left. I went to Grace High School Gbagada. And I hope ex GHS,students see this. I had people in my class who would just bully me for nothing. Even my sister was bullied. They would call us all sorts of names, just cause we weren't as fancy. And we are actually really beautiful, but it took,us time to allow that sink in. I would be walking to school with my heart beating so fast, because I don't know what awaits me for the day. I was given a valentines gift from my classmates. They put: an old toothpaste, dirty toothbrush, soap, sponge, raw pap in cold water and kept in my desk. Cheered me up to open it and still poured it on me. I,can't write it all. I was there for 3 years, I remember after mumy last term, I begged my parents I don't want to go back. Then they changed my school. I had peace. And I'm,thankful till today. Parents should listen to their children when they complain. Change their school if you have to. Not every child is a fighter. Yes! Some of us are weak. We didn't create ourselves. We need to grow to be able to fight. Right now, I am so tough that I if a guy isn't string, u can't date me. Petite and a size6 with a baby face and very light skinned. Deceptive looks, but if u come near me, you won't survive it. I wish I was dis strong back then....

I pray all you kids become victims of bullying in future so that we can measure their strength

Everybody insulting the original commenter, you're entitled to your own opinion! You don't have to insult him/her. (Y'all are bullies too!)
When I first came across this story on DailyMail, I got really angry!!! These white kids are too damn weak! Such a pretty, intelligent girl why did she want to be part of "the kool kids"?
I say this because I was a victim just like her (except the cyber bullying!) I was bullied by the seniors in my school, my mates, they also encouraged the junior girls to make mockery of me! It hurt, boy did it hurt like crazy! I realised I didn't have to be part of the "kool gang", I didn't have to be the person everybody wanted to be like in school! I decided I'd put my head down and just take the punches, laugh off the ones I could and move on.
I'm a better and stronger person today! All the idiots that shamed me then, where are they today? I'm close to the finish line and they are still about to start the race!
So go ahead and insult me, but truth remains, kids abroad are too weak! In an enabling society that doesn't teach them that suicide isn't the end all and be all; because the bible also frowns upon it! (when you have the FEAR of hell fire in your head and heart, you'll think twice!)

Wat a beautiful and talented grl, may she rip. It does hurt wen u are a victim of bullying but suicide is never the answer. I was constantly called fat while i was in sec sch, was even disgraced by a teacher in front of a class filled with my seniors n juniors. That day, he said I was too fat n a student in js1 suggested that i try gyming(I was in js 3 at dat tym). My classmates didn't even help matters. My parents and siblings helped me through dat stage of my life n today I feel very confident and beautiful. Sometimes, my younger sister comes to me crying abt crude comments made by her peers concerning her n i constatly remind her err'tin with a beginning has an end. Wish this girl had someone to tell her that...

You May Never Know what people pass through unless you are faced with a similar situation..Im not saying what she did was right but I remember growing up as a kid, I had a very Big Head and I was constantly called funny names both at school and at home...My self esteem was seriously bruised and I just felt everyone else was better than me, but I'm Happy God saw me through those stormy days and now I have grown into my head and when girls call me handsome...I silently whisper to myself..you should have seen me many years back!

Lonely, has a smoking mother,no mention of a father...the girl is obviously broken, bullies just added to her suicidal tendencies. How sad!

Anonymous said...

Its sad that she took her life but really, suicide is never the answer. I was also bullied and even beaten sef and to make matter worse, my mother will beat me her own for not fighting back. She would ask me if the person has two heads. Bullying is a real problem in schools but i don't know why white kids give up easily in life because they are bullied. Your life will not end in school. You have the whole world at your feet and even the so called bullies will bow at your feet one day so, chin up, be strong and don't GIVE UP. Say NO to bullying!

Anonymous said...

This has nothing to do with race,it's about a girl who felt alone.....do u kno way it feels like to be constantly shut out by your peers and not knowing why.....you have no right to say she was weak cause u don't know what she went through......yes,suicide was not the option....but I'm sure at a point in everyone's life,we have felt lik it was all too much...so u have no right whatsover to say she was weak

Anonymous said...

What is bully?. In my place this sucide is an abomination alu!. It is very rare, and it is said to run in families. This girl had no right, to take her own or anyone's life, for the simple reason that she cannot give life. Only God can do that. That is why murderers are punished. The west give these so called bullies to much relevance. As for those who claim to have been bullied over here in my niger, go follow this girls example and see if your people don't throw your body into evil forest. It is not our custom here, okay and it will never be. There are some western things we take others we throw back. Sorry for oyigbo girl and her family sha. I dey eat internet bully so I dare you.

Anonymous said...

Parents, please talk to your kids, listen when they complain about things especially bullying and change their school if need be.
I know its easier to tell kids to toughen up but he who fights and runs away, lives to fight another day. Please..

Anonymous said...

Can you people just stop. Even if you were bullied in Nigeria or didnt belong to the hot cliques, you had friends, classmates or set mates you could talk to at school.

Over there it is not the same. A kid can go to school and NO ONE will speak with him through out. He has not 1 friend, is treated like a leper, beaten up at recess for no reason and told he is a moron on a daily basis.

If he reports, he is a snitch and that makes it worse. There is a huge different between an adult not having 1 friend (most times its the their decision) and a kid who longs to play with his age mates but has no one willing to even talk to him let alone play.

Anonymous said...

Anon@2:52. I blame disney, and Hannah Montana mentality. These children have been brain wash. Instead of going to school for self improvement they go there to belong to popular group. It is sad. It's hard for bullies to strive in this environment becos nobody stands alone there is always a family member you will have to content .

Shola said...

Which country is that anon@ 3.03. As far as am concern were I go to school you can belong or walk your own. Yep in Britain. Some people want to belong by force. Thats the problem. Also some kids enter a suicide pact . Please google. Blacks have been bullied by whites all there life's. And yep we are resilient I think we all have a gene that makes us immune to harsh treatment. If some whites went through half of what blacks have gone through they will be extinct.

It breaks my heart to know that most of the people on here think whites are too weak. This girl took her own life because people told her she was worthless, and nobody liked her; she wasnt good enough for them. You guys are probably all adults, but im 13, and I know how hard it is. You cant even walk down the hallways without people
glaring, or making you feel horrible about yourself. Ive seem some of the scariest things in my life at school. At one of our dances, someone was smoking pot in the bathroom, and a girl had a panic attack, and had to be taken to the hospital. My gym teacher called me fat, and told me I needed to lose weight, and made me run an extra half a mile when I asked to simply go to the restroom during gym. I have had people call me a slut, cunt, whore, hoe, bitch, asshole, worthless, not needed, meaningless, a loser, ugly, fat, obese, and an attention whore, just in the hallways. Boys throw punches, and teachers are so mean. Everyone has their limits. That doesnt mean that MY race, is weak. We are strong, but there is only so much one person can take, and its hard to live in a society that expects you to be perfect all the time. Plus, some people have family issues, or mental or physical illnesses. Sometimes, they feel as though harming themselves, or even taking their own lives has been the only solution, even though its not.
Plus, we have a different take on life than someone who may live in Nigeria. Not every country is the same, so dont even think that.
This poor, poor girl, ended herself, and it was because horrible people felt as though they needed to tear her down to make themselves feel better, and it is truly a tragedy, but she will always be remembered.

Anonymous said...

you nigerians are so bloody sanctimonious and always feel you are better than others......was it not just last week a nigerian teenager killed herself cos she was raped by four guys? who kills themselves over rape? the truth is bullying is alot more common in schools now anywhere, and bullying affects children a whole lot anywhere regardless of culture or location.....the only good thing we have going for us as nigerians is that we are very religious so we are able to get to the place where we get solace spiritually which is the only solution for deep seated insecurities like this.....parents need to be vigilante about their kids who are very sensitive and easily prone to low self esteem...truth is some people are alot more stronger than others
