Question of the day

You are driving on a lonely bridge late at night (in Naija o)...let's say around 11pm, and you see two little children - say 5 and 2, on the side of the bridge just sitting there crying...would you stop your car to pick them up or just continue driving? Why would you pick them up? And why wouldn't you?

Though stopping to help them is an ideal thing but Nigeria today is dangerous. people are desperately looking for money from any source.

Also they try many things to trap than those who like helping others through a mean like this

Anonymous said...

In 2008 my car broke down in a terrible lagos traffic jam at night. To add fuel to fire, armed robbers stormed the place and did what they knew best. The road became isolated after that, naturally. I was stranded, out of pocket, far away from home and bloody scared.
I started to jog and flag down the few cars that sped by. Of course no one stopped, that was until i caught up with a rickety car that just didn't have the 'juice' to outrun a desperate man.
I must have scared the poor driver and his daughter (assuming she was) to death but i explained my plight, the whole time hanging on the door of the moving jalopy. He eventually let me in....
In summary, I'll give the children the benefit of doubt, as I was once given.

Sola black.

As sad as this is, I wouldn't stop. It is very sad that authorities looks for escape routes to cash in on. My first time back home, after 10 yrs, i was driving by 1004 and saw this keke maruwa with punctured tire, i drove quickly beside it to let him know hes tire was down. Kind gesture abi? No. LASTMA jumped in my car, because stupid me open the doors and wound down the window, and cashed in on me big time. My grandfather use to say "ore ni won". i'll leave the kids and pray God guide them

Anonymous said...

Loving all the comments, I will not stop or even call the police, so the police will say I dropped the children there since I could not kill them. God will send them their rightful helper. Why the bridge beside water? Which party or meeting did dey attend? Lol

Anonymous said...

Una de fear to answer this one? Nobody gree talk today, Oya make una start to de form mother Theresa make I see, for naija when we der people de hire twin toddlers to use as beggars, man go first reason if na ritualistic don use them set trap for there, but notwhitstanding we go device method to save the kids tho

Anonymous said...

I will not stop please. While we may try to be charitable and compassionate, we should also consider our safety. Contact the police and check on the children in the morning if you really want to help them.

To be frank, it's a trap and one should not risk his life. Also, one can help them by calling Police help line and inform them. But police in Naija can be cruel atimes and rope you the caller. IF I HEAR SAY ANY OF YOU STOP, I HAVE WARNED YOU OH!!!!!! Let me share a story that happened in my area in 2006. A baby was dumped in trash bin, probably by the mother, everyone just passed except for a Reverend Sister who offered to take the child to a police station. She got detained for helping. If you are outside this country, please help!!! If not call the police to come and pick them o!!! I have said my own.

Anonymous said...

its hard to say what to do. If its anywhere else like in UK or America, the proper thing would be to pick the kids up or at most call the police. But since its Nigeria, you can never know. If someone attempts to pick them up, the person might be making a grave mistake. One they could be set up by armed robbers. These days people can do anything for money. if you talk them to the police,it might lead to problems with them. So its really a difficult choice. Having said all that, might just children being lost or their parents might have abandoned them there. So one would need to be very careful

Anonymous said...

I won't o! Ders no way dos kids are really stranded. Just peeps using dem as bait to rob people.

In an ideal world, I would stop and help. But we don't live in an ideal world so it would look quite suspicious to me. I would drive on and alert the police.

Ekpenyong said...

I will do NEITHER.

I will park across or transversally so some upcoming cars do not hit them. I will then put on the warning lights of my car so it could be visible from a long distance. Tell the kids to move to the edge of the road and stay there. Possibly, I will wave at passing cars so they can move as farther as possible away from the secured perimeter.

Then I will call the cops or whatever National or local "emergency" outfit operating in Nigeria or in that given area or some ambulance company... Then I will wait till they show up.

In a nation like Nigeria, picking these kids up could get you in dire trouble. You could get accused of many things and worse.

It's terrible that the majority of us WILL NOT stop for the children even in light of Sola Black and Mz Bombshell's comments, but this is what our country and really the current world we live in has unfortunately taught us! You want to do the right thing and help especially as they are so young, but the propensity of the WRONG thing happening to you in return is SO great, that we have to walk away! May God help us and send a discerning spirit at that moment to help us decide positively and may He ALWAY protect us. Amen.

Pick them and carry them where? How did they get there? Where are they going? What is their mission? Who born them? Which name do they bear? Try and answer those questions before you conclude on whether you will pick them or not because those questions will rain torrentially even if they are no baits.

Anonymous said...

It is indeed sad that doing the right thing is not possible anymore because so many people have safety concerns.

If I see very young children at too late an hour I will stop. Death or no death, I would prefer die knowing I did what was right than live with my conscience that I didn't stop to find out why they are on the road so late.

I walked out of my home when I was very young, about 3 yrs old. At least for me it was broad daylight, but I know that kids can walk out if they are not being watched.
