Lagos court sentences 30 beggars to Kirikiri prison for begging alms

Beggars are now being locked up for begging alms in Lagos. Wow! About 30 of them were sentenced to Kirikiri Prison, some Badagry prison by the Special Offences Magistrate Court sitting in Alausa, Ikeja, today Monday February 4th.

The Attorney General of Lagos State said the beggars committed an offence under the criminal law of the State.

Begging alms in the streets of Lagos is illegal and the state environmental agency is doing all they can to get rid of as many beggars as they can. But is sending them to Kirikiri prison the answer? What do you guys think?

We need too start running a proper welfare system in this country. Until then, we might just have to bear the nuisance of having beggars on the street. There still beggars on streets of major cities of the world so I really don't get the drift. I like fashola but this is extreme. IAI

Ve always said our system is wack, why can't they send them to a rehabilitation centre rather than sending them to kirikiri,God I know you up there

Fuck lagos state! Find them something to do or deport them to their home states.

Haba naw.... This is too stringent and harsh jor! Lagos should just find a more effective way of controlling them, I know most of these beggars wouldn't even want to take up any job if given due to the fact that they want free money, so Lagos State Govt. Should just come up with a means of pushing them away but not jail pls.

Now this is just as cool as it sounds! All we need is a LEADER that knows what's best for a sane society, a True LEADER we got in Lagos state! I bless God for this present Govt. Once they r taken off the roads, we will know how and where to reach them to give other than been nuisance in our faces on a daily basis.
Things I still look forward to in Lagos; 1. State Police 2. Constant electricity 3.Better Transport systems 4.Quick attention to dangling poles, hazardious pot holes 5. Banning crappy TAXIs frm operating in Lagos state(onli 2005 model cars upward shld be permitted to operate in Lagos, all othr crappy 'cab' shld be used as 'cabbu cabbu' to replace Okada roots).
God bless my home town Lagos. God bless Fashola!

I think this is a mockery of the judicial system! These beggars are definitely illiterate and therefore have no idea of the said law that established alm begging as illegal. What has the so called government put in place for the less privileged of the society? What they are courting is called anarchy, where the government fails the people would arise to defend and fund for themselves.

Great Job Fashola! If you're surprised that I said this then I think Kirikiri is where you belong. The same people that will complain about how Lagos looks, how there are thieves in the streets are the same people that will condemn a leader that is always trying to please the people. Do you not know that these beggers are the night thieves? Do you not know many of them are in pretense? Do you not know many of them have even built houses from begging but are just selfish and lazy? I'm shocked at the way Nigerians are shallow minded and quick to condemn even the few that do the right thing. I'm not against giving or helping, in fact I give as a habit, but don't take begging as a job because I've seen many without eyes and legs that do great things that even the physically okay will struggle to do. Lagos is where it is today because of this rare serious minded and honest Governor. Having said this, anyone that has anything against this man probably has an inverted brain. Eko oni Baje!

Guys calm down! Let's get our facts right, why do we like talking about someone's bad side and not the good, or why is it so hard to accept change?
Fashola have rehabilitated these beggers and sent some of them back home, he has also empowered others financially and taken their finger prints to be able to hold them responsible should they come back again.
These 30 beggers arrested, are they the only beggers in Lagos state? Why is it only them that are arrested?
Let's not forget so soon how guns and knives were recovered from under some beggers wooden wheelers.
In as much as I think kirikiri is too extreme, let's not forget that these people constitute nausance and that being a good leader comes with making tough decisions that might not go down well with some few for the well being of many in the long run.
Check the accident rate in lagos state since okada was banned and tell me if the decision to ban them was actually wrong. Let's embrace change when it is genuine.

I am not against helping the poor, but this begging on the streets of Lagos has become a Career choice for many of these people. It is passed on from generation to generation. Some children who are born normal have even been known to be deliberately blinded or disfigured on purpose to make them carry on the begging tradition.
What most people dont know is that Begging is Organised Crime. It is very lucrative, especially in Lagos. It only benefits the Ogas that send them out.
They must have been warned over and over again, uncountable times.
Personally, I don't enjoy seeing them on the streets and even when they are offered alternatives these people choose to beg because it is more lucrative.
Prison is a first step to show them how serious the state is, but when they come out, they should be helped.

Mrs Anyai said...

plz can u all abusing BRF just shut up!!!!!!
Dis so called ''beggars'' are able bodied humans and only constitute nuisance.
They will give birth 2 uncountable kids cos d more THEY have the more money,d kids are like investments...
Lagos state built a massive rehab centre in ikorodu and they bring d beggars dere on daily basis 2 learn sometin n b useful but they will scale tru d fences n go back 2 d streets.
D prison is much beta cos they wont b able to scale tru d fences and will b forced 2 learn sometin dat will empower dem PLUS THEY WILL HAVE FOOD.
Go to d north and c how 'begging free' it is.
Nigerians are just hypocrites, they av d most degrees n masters,av d most churches and yet they r d most shallow minded. Quick 2 say ''God punish Fashola'"...i pity una cos BRF is d best tin dat has hapund 2 Lagos state. God bless him

I totally agree with this. I stay in the north and I was on a bike that hit a so called crippled begger about two years ago. We tried to take the woman to the hospital and we found over N300,000 in her purse. Where did a cripple/beggar get that kind of money from??? They even have more money than people that work hard and give them arms.

They should all be carted back to their various states. No need to send them to jail. My thinking might be incredibly myopic, but they simply remind me of the boko haram people.Let their state governments take care of them.

To me I don't see anything harsh in it. I have asked a beggar before with 2 hands and legs y can't she work she said no she won't. They actually constitute nuissance. Then for those pushing the once on wheel chair y can't they go and work for them.I see it as a good idea and besides its not Fashola dat makes the law its d legislators.

Can you imagine Lagos state gvt. beggars in prison 4 begging for money on the street. Did d State gvt provide shelter, food and money that can keep them to run thr day to day life, did ur gvt think they want to beg on the street?
This is absolute sucks, even in USA thr r beggars on major street and mall begging for money. Ur families are in abroad having opportunity to enjoyed good amenities, such as good road, good communication and utilities and u r making life miserable for common 9ija citizen. stupid gvt without focus.
