US embassy discriminate against pregnant Nigerian women?

Piece written by Mrs. Juyinlo Toluwalase
The United States’ embassy in Nigeria seems to have perfected the art of denying well-meaning and legitimate non-immigrant Nigerian mothers visa for reasons best known to it. At the end of visa interview sessions, what one hears is, ‘’You are not qualified at this time’’! Women of child-bearing age are asked questions such as: Are you pregnant at this time? How many children do you have? Do you plan to have more children? And if the response to any of these questions is in the affirmative, then the next set of questions may be: Do you plan to have the baby in America? Can you afford to pay the medical bills? You are probably asked to show evidence and even after showing evidence you are told mostly that you do not qualify at this time or that you should reapply after having your baby.

Please note that there have been cases when female applicants did not even know they were pregnant during the interview and later discovered in the weeks to follow! Obviously, a married woman who is sexually active can become pregnant at anytime even with the use of contraceptives. Asking these kinds of questions during interviews is not a way to determine the purpose of the interview, which is to determine if the visa applicant is an intending immigrant. Finding out if an applicant is pregnant or plan to become pregnant soon, has nothing to do with the application but is an unnecessary invasion of privacy.

Moreover in Africa, questions like these are very sensitive as people like to keep such information private until the pregnancy becomes advanced. If one may ask, is the visa meant to be an agreement to celibacy in marriage? In my own case, I had used my American visa many times for holiday and even business before deciding to make use of the medical facilities available in the US to have my baby. I also decided to do this because I developed some complications during the pregnancy and decided to seek better health care. Why then would a consular officer overlook all the business transactions done and deny an applicant for the simple reason of having a baby in America?

Is it wrong for a mother to seek better medical treatment for herself anywhere in the world if she can afford it? Or, could it be that it is a crime under American laws? Let us examine the major issues in this matter because I really do not understand the thinking.

The B-1/B-2 visitors visa is for people travelling to the United States temporarily for business (B-1) or for pleasure or medical treatment (B-2). Generally, the B-2 visa is for travel that is recreational in nature, including tourism, visits to friends or relatives, medical treatment and activities of a fraternal, social or service nature often the B-1 and B-2 visas are combined and issued as one visa: the B-1/B-2 visa.

So, can we safely assume that if you are issued a visa in the B-1/B-2 category, you can use the visa for any of the purposes stated above during the duration of the visa (which is usually 2 years validity) without fear that you will be denied another visa during renewal for using it for any of the above stated purposes? Let us say, for instance, during the interview, you stated to the consular officer that you were travelling to America on holiday. If sometimes during the validity of your visa, you use same visa for business purposes or medical purposes, should you be penalised?

Using one’s visa for medical treatment can be in form of the following: Any form of surgery both medical, cosmetic surgeries , having a baby or any gynaecological related procedure, general medical check-up e.t.c
I have tried to find out several reasons why mothers are being denied visas to the US. Could it be because there is a law in place saying people cannot have their babies in America? In fact, I can say after much investigation that there is nothing like that. Everyone is allowed to go everywhere in the world for medical treatment so long as they can afford it. Nigerians still go to South Africa, the United Kingdom, and other European countries to have their babies so long as they can afford it and they do so because they believe they will get better medical care.

Could the issue be that the women that are having babies in America can cause overpopulation in the future? I still do not think that is the issue as the American government still runs the visa lottery every year in which thousands of people all over the world are granted immigrant status to live and work in America.
Denying mothers of American citizen children visa’s during renewal is indirectly denying the American citizen child entry to America because the child cannot travel unaccompanied at a minor age without either of his or her parent.

Was denied in 2003 because i recently got married and the interviewer said he feels i want to go have a baby in the US...... No be today , they have been discriminating against pregnant women. I dont blame them to so degree blc of the abuse cuture that we have.

Some women go and give birth in UK and USA and refuse to pay their bill (case in point those 2 recent Nigerian women in UK). They spoil it for the rest of us who have intention of paying medical bills

Please go and sit down. Your self righteous article makes no sense. As if yiu don't know what your fellow Nigerians motives are.

Abeg, its their country. If they don't want you to have yiur children in their country, its their right.

Well, the Americans are within their rights to refuse pregnant women visa and don't forget lady, that Nigerians have a long history of leaving bills behind when they go to give birth in America and that includes those who can 'afford' to pay!

You seem naive and not well informed.? Why dont you tell your government to fix your health care system? I am a Nigerian living in the U.S. We work so hard over here and pay taxes diligently and i believe it is unfair that people who do not live here come and have their babies at the American tax payer expense. Please sit your pregnant ass down in Nigeria and have your child over there.

cant blame the embassy, how do they know those that will come back or not come. everyone says they would return and most dont. if our country was good it wouldn't have been that bad

The problem is not whether u can pay or not. Citizenship ur kids will get will give them access to resources and opportunities u will not contribute to. Tax payers are being protected. Madam be honest, if u cld have ur kids in d US and they don't get citizenship, will you still go? Am not saying u shdnt be upset, just be forthright.

Linda, what Nigerians are forgetting is that being issued a visa is privilege & not a requirement by the issuing country...Also the main reason the Americans are denying pregnant Nigerians visa is due to the history of Nigerians giving birth on the state-side and skipping without settling their medical bills! I have family members that work in the medical field in the U.S and it well known that Nigerians were very notorious for skipping on their child-bearing medical bills and the U.S government has decided to nip it in the bud. I heard a story of a Nigerian that applied for a U.S visa to give birth, after the embassy pulled the applicants past record it showed that they had some outstanding child-birth bills in the U.S, the embassy directed them to pay the bill before they could proceed with their visa application, the applicant paid the bill ($15K) after which the embassy not only denied the visa application but also banned the applicant from entering into the U.S for 10yrs as a punishment for violating their law.

Nigerian women have abused the American System coming here to have babies and refusing to pay medical bills or look for a way to get illegal aid. Please if the bad eggs haven't messed up, the good ones will not be affected. It just shows you some Nigerians can never be honest so there you have it. Stay put and have your children in Nigeria. Shikena!

Well said...if you know how much Nigerians're owing foreign hospitals then you'd understand why.Alternatively they could ask them to deposit some money as a sort of collateral with the embassy here which'll be refunded to you upon your return provided you can prove you don't have any outstanding debts in the hospital.

Anonymous said...

Don't blame them at all. Too many Naija pregnant women going into labour in our hospitals and run away without paying bills. Upon return to Naija showing off they've brought baby from "labroad".

In as much as i want to reason with her there are many reasons i think they are justified. It is their country and they have every right to deny u a visa if need be. It is always difficult dealing with developing countries like Nigeria because we tend to abuse systems we see vulnerable.Immigratin laws are toughening up over the world because things are harder for those onside so any form of exploitation of the system will not be condoned. Cases have been reported of people using facilities and end up running away.We all know what we want so dont be begrudged if u are not given.

Anonymous said...

The law actually states that it isn't safe for pregnant women to fly at a particular stage either at early or later. Then the US is being crowded with citizens outside the home, it's in a bit to control citizenship.

Anonymous said...

Well most people that come here to have their babies always rely on medicaid to pay their bills. Moreover, you should only come in for the purpose you were granted a visa.
In the course of 9 months, you should apply for the necessary medical visa instead of using your tourist visa to come and have a baby. Well their country their decision, rules are rules.

Don't blame them, Nigerians are always travelling abroad to give birth to US citizens...it's not a secret

Liars ! If you give birth to a child in America, the child automatically becomes an American. And Americans have a right to protect their system from abuse ,especially by Nigerians, who run away from hosiptals, cant pay their rent, some even start to request for their own citizenship because they now have a GOLDEN American child. It is so common and rampant here that one feels ashamed to even say they are Nigerian in certain places. When I got my previous US visa, I wasnt pregnant at the time and didnt even intend to go have my baby in the US. Used the visa to go on holiday. Got pregnant shortly after and developed complications, pre eclampsia to be precise. Then I decided to go have my baby in the US to save my life and my babys. Thank God I had a healthy baby and we completed all payments. I decided to go renew my visa early this year and I was refused!!
It makes me wonder what my crime is.. the officer kept asking questions surrounding the pregnancy and that when I went for the interview they asked if I was going to the US for medical purpose and I said no and bla bla bla... I'm yet to understand it myself

Hi.
Just got back from the states and had the opportunity to ask at the point of entry if it was illegal to give birth in their country. The answer I got was "No"', but he went up to stress that most people don't pay their medical bills. Period.
It's no new that people don't pay, hence a huge outstanding bill running into billions of $. No be small thing.

Her visa was cancelled and she was deported and sent back to naija same day...quite harsh

Anytime something does not go the way we want it, we are quick to scream discrimination or racism. The USA is not under any obligation to grant any body an entry visa whether or not they qualify for it. This is their country and so they are free to use their own discretion. These countries have a 'way of life' that they would like to protect and would not want foreigners to put pressure on their system. In other news, what does the term 'WELL MEANING NIGERIANS' mean anyway?

The difference, my dear, is that the number of migrants expected into the US yearly, from the Visa lottery has been pre-determined and designated (c. 5,000). It is an amount the US government has determined it can sustain.

What you have to bear in mind, is that the applications for Visas of potential-mothers is not limited in the same way, and is an extra stream of migrants.

And as my friend has said above, what you really need to consider is the fact that there are a significant amount of Nigerians that go abroad to give birth and then evade paying the fees associated with this.

If one is purely interested in healthcare, (as opposed to their child's passport), they wouldn't be so upset America is clamping down. The best healthcare facilities are in Sweden.

The fact is, it's a huge burden to their citizens and if/when Nigeria gets to the stage America is at now, we'd have to do the same.

You won't believe how much the evaders cost taxpayers in these countries, till you read this: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2195695/Revealed-10-common-nationalities-foreign-born-mothers-gave-birth-NHS-hospitals-2011.html

Overpopulation or whatever one of the reasons she stated has nothing to do with it. In Texas most especially naija women come, give birth and dont pay and that is the problem. It's not free to give birth or see a doctor in naija so why would anyone assume its free in the U.S. The tax payers etc end up paying these bils indirectly so obviously no one wants to have to deal with that. Doctors, nurses, anesthesiologists (for epidural) are people too and have families, so what makes anyone think they want to come and work for free. I completely understand folks who want their children to be born U.S citizens (after all who no want better opportunity for their pikin) come here, pay their bills and go and if you notice if you do that and hang on to your documentation, receipts etc and you go apply for a visa EVEN if you are pregnant the next time they don't usually turn you away ( I know this because I have several relatives that go about this the right way). Some people would say they can't afford the bills etc but not paying which equates to theft is not right either so naturally the U.S is tired of it and now unfortunately the responsible people that want to come with the intention of paying their bills will be prejudged (especially if it's your first time) and lumped in with the irresponsible ones that think it's ok to freeload your way through life.

Anonymous said...

The state programs (medicaid) end up paying the bills of the majority of these Nigerian women and they can't afford to do that anymore. All they are trying to do is prevent this from happening by asking these questions. I don't see the discrimination. All you have to do is provide proof you can pay your bills and you will get your visa.

I don't blame the US embassy for refusing Visa to pregnant women. While it is true more women are denied Visa, I've also come across women who have been granted VISA after fully disclosing their intention of coming to deliver their babies.

Many Nigerians take advantage of the government healthcare services intended for the less priviledged Americans. (Paid for with Tax-payer funds!) And leave without paying a dime. Which is rather unfair.

Yes, I'm using said government service, but I'm out of a Job at the moment and have paid my dues in taxes and qualify for such aid.

So, if they can proove medical care will be paid for (Or better yet, pay in advance) they might dole out more Visa's!

This writer must understand that a country reserved the final right to determine who comes into its territory irrespective of whether you are rich, poor, black or white etc.

You must also understand that unlike Nigeria (where we are used to doing things without data and analysis), other countries such as US evaluate every single activities within its businesses and analysis have shown that the major reason why a pregnant Nigerian woman would want to go to the US to give birth is more of a citizenship status for the child and not better health system has the writer have claimed. Meaning we ourselves in this age and time have succummed to modern day slavery!(my child must be an american citizen syndrome!). Also, a case in reference is that of Saudi Arabian Govt denying our women entry into the Holy Land simply because analysis have shown that some few individuals have been found to display disgraceful behaviour in the past. It is rather unfortunate that the activities and intents of few citizens have rubbed off the shine of our great country Nigeria in the face of the whole world and some of us are paying dearly for it.
However, If u care to know, there are very good hospitals in Nigeria where you can get good health care for child delivery at a cost lower than the total cost of your air ticket, upkeep & hospital bill to have a delivery in US. So the bottom line is most Nigerian women seek to deliver in the US for citizenship status for their child. If US through its embassy workers therefore decides otherwise, no one should cry fowl. Furthermore, there are several cases of individuals that have refused to pay for medical services when they do get one in the US. Endeavour to contact relevant agencies in US for records, you will be amazed!
Finally, i want to add to this by giving you my first hand experience. My wife got an admission to study in the US(LLM), we applied for a student visa and at the interview session, the visa consular simply asked if she was pregnant (2 months then) which we answered in the affirmative, surprisingly, the gentleman in his own words:"congrats in advance,i hope you are aware that your student insurance would cover for your health care before and after child birth should you decide to have your child in the US(although my wife eventually had our child 7months into her 8month study period in US, but the truth is we cared less, bcos d Dangotes,Adenugas,Utomis and other successful Nigerians were born in Nigeria). Please, ensure you pay necessary fees and get issued with appropriate reciepts to help in your future visa applications. Please pick up your visa in two days because i can see seession has already commenced". Alas the visa was issued!!. So visa issuance by consulars is descretionary upon available facts and i beg to disagree thats it is descriminatory.
Finally, without prejudice to the above, our government at all level must do everything so as to ensure that Nigeria regains its reputation amongst committee of Nations.

well, when most nigerian women go abroad to give birth, they use the medical services of the hospitals and run away, leaving their children behind, automatically making them citizens of that country for free, but i think if u present enough evidence that you are capable of paying and providing for your child, they'll let u in

You know Naija now, we go do someting sotayyyyyyyyyy we just scatter the whole ting! When email came to Naija, wetin happen we used it to scam so many people that now the word "yahoo" is associated with fraud! Trust Naija!

I say about damn time they started looking closely at this situation. Yes, there are a few who do go abroad, have their babies and pay their hospital bills BUT there are far too many who run off and leave the hospital holding the bag. It is a burden on the system for those of us who live here and have to pay the taxes that provide these services. AND also, the people with whom the women lived with during the interim time of their pregnancies get harassed by the doctor, hospital and bill collectors trying to collect their money. Wants that? Soon, they will establish a law that say if you have someone stay with you and the person runs out on a bill, you will have to pay since your address is on the records. Mark my words, it will happen and once it does, people will be less likely to open their doors to visiting pregnant friends/relatives.

The US embassy has every right to do what they are doing, it is their country, abi? Ah, if you no like am dem stay in your country and have your child there! See me see wahala, that's like if someone were to come and knock on my gate and I say "who are you coming to see here and why" and the visitor now gets his or her panties in a bunch about the questions. What nonsense! If you don't want to answer the questions then turn around, go home and use your local hospital, finito.

Some of these women risk their lives, I had a cousin who was lucky enough to not show because she is very tall and a little heavy, she flew in one week and had the baby the next week! What if she had gone into labor on the plane and suffered complications? They don't think of anyone but themselves.

Can we blame them when we have such useless leadership past and present? Our first lady had to leave the country to get procedures done (cosmetics or otherwise) but it never dawned on her illiterate mind to speak to her husband about infusing the medical community with much needed funds instead of the film industry. As far as they are concerned, they can go out of the country to get their medical needs met so screw the other many billions of Nigerians who can't afford to do the same thing.

Mrs Toluwalase,
This is the problem from a Nigerian perspective. The US constitution says that when you are born on US soil, you automatically become a citizen. You become entitled to all rights of a citizen and you need not contribute much to society to benefit as a citizen. Most Nigerians who are pregnant owe no allegiance to the US. They come for the health care and feel entitled to benefits. They do not pay thier bills when they are treated in a civilized manner. I know of someone who used her $15k her husband gave her to pay for child birth to buy a car, simply because the hospital said she would be sent a bill. When she went to renew her visa they denied her straight up becos of the unpaid bill. She cried and wailed foul. Then her hubby sent another round of money to pay off the bill. Bottomline is most Nigerians have shown our Nigerian attitude and taken the hosts for granted. Ask yourself why folks from East Africa, South Africa and other West African countries dont get the same treatment? It is our BAD behavior. Let us stop passing blame and tackle our monster head on. we are an uncouth, illbehaved, deceitful people. There are good ones among us but the bad ones are the only ones with access because by and large, in Nigeria being bad is what gets you money to travel abroad.

America is one of the most blessed countries in the world.Things work in the USA because people pay their taxes. When some Nigerian ladies come here to have their babies, they don't pay medical bills, which burdens the American government fiscally.
People prefer coming to America to have their 'American' babies,as their babies are automatically citizens when they are born in the US.Not so in UK,or some other countries of the world.
The American government can decide to give or turn down people's visa application.Every country has the right to do what it wants.
So, Mrs Juyinlo Toluwalase, the American government can do as it wishes, it has given visas to pregnant women in the past, it still does.A friend came here from Nigeria to have her baby in New York about 2months ago.Wherever you have your baby, I wish you a safe delivery.

It is high time abeg....a lot of Nigerians that see naija women give birth in the USA do not know what they do.some do pay but a lot. Come here to take advantage of the health system.they go to hospital wen they are in labour cos itz an emergency, they can't deny anybody in emergency here.after giving birth, they give fake address and the hospital keeps sending bills to a wrong address,at the end,it is those working their asses off that they will tax to pay.there are a lot of anchor babies cos u know once u give birth here u are automatically an American citizen, meanwhile someone that came in with a J1 visa intending to work will wait for donkey years to get a green card let alone passport.i think Americans should be the one to change their policies.not only Nigerians are guilty but also the South Americans, those people give birth like birds lay eggs

Many Nigerians that come here to have kids cannot afford it, and they will run up a very high bill say $25000 and leave without paying a dime, then they will go to Nigeria to brag as people that had a baby in America. People need to start living within their means and stop the extortion, and pretensious lifestyle. WOW. a lot of people are just yarning without knowing the facts. Welfare doesn't pay for unpaid medical bills people. it doesn't work that way. even poor people here in the US who are citizens and on welfare don't get their entire bills paid for. And someone on a B visa or even a tourist visa isn't eligible for WIC. Don't confuse America with the UK which has a public health care system. Why is everyone so quick to abuse nigerian women or claim that naija people are spoiling the american health system? the american health system isn't impacted by foreigners coming to the US to give birth. that's a mere drop in the bucket. America has MUCH bigger issues than pregnant nigerian women. So what if you know a story of "someone who did something at such and such a time" or you have a "cousin who tried something similar" ....puh lease. everybody claims to know somebody who knows somebody who gamed the system but no one knows the whole story.

Anonymous said...

Well I don't know about them discriminating, I am currently in the US to have my baby and when I applied for my visa I told them my purpose for travel was going to have my baby (I was already showing). The consular officer asked me for proof of finances, correspondence with the hospital and doctor....etc. Once I showed it all he said to make sure I prepay before I leave Nigeria otherwise I may be denied entry....

So if you do things the proper way, more often than not you shouldn't have any problems...

Why bother this this story? The Americans are not as foolish as the British who allow every Tom, Dick and Harry's pregnant women to deliver in their country FREE-OF-CHARGE.

UK Law will soon implement changes to stop e.g., a mother of five babies to deliver without paying a pound. One Nigerian woman abused UK free health system and now everybody will pay for it as long as they are not British or EU.

at the end of the day its their country, they can decide who visits pregnant or not.

She went to America to have her baby, had complications ans racked up a bill of $40k for drugs and medical bills.. This babe and her husband have less than $10k in both their names.

How can they pay??

Then you complain if US embassy refuses to allow child birth age ladies into their counytry to use medical and get citizenship...

First of all I'm pretty sure the visa category is clearly stated on the visa as whether it is B1 or whether it is B2. I don't think it's B1 / B2 they put there even though that's the general category you apply under, so if you say you're going there for vacation purposes and you go there to do business "during your stay" then YES you are doing something wrong. People should stop looking for loopholes in other country's laws just because they can be broken in our own country. It costs about 10000 dollars to have a baby in America if you don't have health insurance there. Once you do that, your child is an American citizen. It's simple really and I'm sure if you ask them they won't hesitate to tell you the reason (God knows the American embassy personnel in Nigeria don't have to worry about being politically correct or tolerant where we are concerned because they can get away with anything). It's either they want to cut down on the number of Nigerians who are automatically becoming citizens or they are trying to cut down on Nigerians who go abroad to have babies and leave the country after racking up an unpaid bill of 10K. Either way, who can blame them?

So many interesting comments...

Well, America, is the only place to go if u want your child to be citizen and hold American Passport.

Here in the U.K, if u like born triplet, they're not getting a British Passport... All they get is the birth certificate showing d child was born there (not a certificate stating they are British citizen's).

Once d child leaves the UK, and u planned to visit, just make sure u have d reciept stating u paid for your medical or else, na automatic visa refusal be that for u and ur British born piken. If u can't afford to pay it, forget about British visa, and paying it doesn't gurantee u a visa either.

The UKBA, are now wise... Once it's boarding time for flight schedule for Nigeria, u might find them there checking passports of those leaving UK.

I was on a flight to Lagos, when passports were checked, to see if you've overstayed, checked against fraud and all that... I remembered people without visas on their Nigeria passport were asked if they've got another passport, and a woman was told to produce reciept for the child born in one of London's hospital (cos d mother had a naija passport with C-vist and d baby had a fresh naija passport with London, as place of birth).

Her picture and finger prints were taken straight away, and her visa was cancalled and told to pay up the medical at their embassy in Nigeria, if she ever wants to come back to UK. She wept from London to Lagos ni o, lamenting that British passport sef she no get for piken and debt is mounting.

UKBA, don gboro on immigrant now o, even some student visa sef now comes with 'NO WORK'.

Which way NIGERIA @ 52?

CS section can easily cost $15,000-$25,000 for hosp bill depending on complications. This is for single birth, we arent talking about twins and multiples!!!

Vaginal births cost $7,000-$15,000 on average for hospital bill.

This is for hospital bill! Not talking about the doctor's bill which is cheaper.
Trust nigerians, they come here pay doctor the fee of either $2,000-$4,000, and bounce and leave hospital bill hanging. Many Nigerians do it, I even have some cousins who have done it, and its extremed sad because they are living big man life in Naija, and would rather spend that money on cars and clothes.

Even those who lie and get visa, I know several that have been bounced at port of entry with their belle, and sent back on the next flight to naija. My cousin's besto was an example.

I showed him a proof of that and a letter from the doctor confirming that he is expecting me and that I paid my last bills and that was it. If you are truthful under normal circumstances you should get the visa. But you also need to proof that you can pay your bills. Its a wonderful experience to give birth over there. Tef tef said...

From alot of these comments i can see that alot of people dont have sense. Saying things like "stay in your country and experience decadence.... and some rubbish about nigerians living abroad working hard and paying tax. Clearly they are very narrow minded. It is obvious that the reason this became an issue in the first place is because of the ill mannered and badly behaved nigerians who have misused the openess of the american healthcare system, but the naive ppl talking rubbish shuld know that even other ill mannered americans do it. so its not about where you are from, its about you as a person. The only thing i think the Americans should be particular about is your ability to pay, and proof of payment for past procedures. But because of the vindictive nature of some of these americans working in the embassy, they take matters into their own hands.
I mean, should i put the life of my self and unborn child in danger just because.... i want to patriotic, or because of the sins of others.... it makes absolutely no sense. im a nigerian who just had my second child in the US in the 2yr time frame of my visa, and i know what i went through at the immigration posts at the point of entry both times i was coming through. but from their questions it was clear all they wanted to ascertain was that we could afford it, and proof that we paid for the past procedure. All the other questions about being pregnant when i applied for the visa, and not stating it was just them being stupid and overbearing because it not their business.
What we should rally for is that our government should improve our health care in nigeria so those that go abroad will go just because they want to not because they are worried they will not be properly cared for in nigeria. And also for the government to stand up to the embassy and all these foreigners who come to our country to discriminate against us and do things they wont do else where just because they know they will get away with it.

You must have had your baby in a home health midwifery...with no specialist or certified doctors present. $6,500 is not even enough to run the necessary tests needed to verify that your child is ready to be born much less a whole hosptial birth. This tells me that Medical Assistance paid a major portion of your bill because you told the social workers some lies. That's what the fucking problem is..Nigerians visiting America and painting a thick black paint across that most Nigerians who live and work here are looked at as criminals.

@ Blackxx12 please keep shut if you dont have the correct information. I had my baby in a very good hospital with certified doctors. Some people give birth in the US with as low as $3,000. If any part of my bill was paid via Medicaid i should have been denied a visa - I specifically told the interveiwer that my intention was to go and give birth to my second baby. Stop pedling false rumours $6,500 is sufficient to give birth in the US. If you need my doctors details i can give them to you!

I was pregnant again, asked if I had arrangements and I showed them my doctor's acceptance letter and receipt of prepayment(which can be refunded if visa is denied). My visa was renewed and at point of entry all they did was count the money I had with me to ensure I would pay,as the embassy had put it in the system that they granted me visa to go have my baby. Going forward,I should have any problems renewing.
The point is get in touch with hospitals and do some prepayments, also show evidence u have strongholds back in Nigeria.they have given about 30 pregnant women I know this year with this method

Blaxx 12, that is a big lie!!!! its very possible to pay 6500k as hospital bills. it all depends on the town you go to. For example in lancaster california(a place im very sure most of you do not know, cos its a very small town) it cost just 2500k for vaginal delivery, 600dollars for tests and 2000k for doctor's bill. your child as a US citizen gets free checkup by a local pead. you just have to know the right to place to go to get the same quality health care for less. even a c-section costs just 3500k in the hospital. The hospital is called WOMWN AND INFANT PAVILLION ANTELOPE VALLEY LANCASTER CA. You can do your research if you want.

blaxx12 please get your facts right! it is very possible to get medical care in the US for 6500k and even less. At Antelope Valley Hospital in Lncaster CA, it cos $2500 for natural birth, $3500 for a C-Section, $2000 for doctor's bill and $600 for lab bill.so with either $4100 OR $6100 you can get the same good quality health care as you would get in either LA, NEWYORK, WASHINGTON ETC. Just need to do your research well. knowledge is power and will save you alotta money!

I had my baby in the US in 2011, renewed my US visa on Friday. The interviewer asked if I wz gonna have any other kids there n I said yes. She said it was okay if I want to do that but that I shud just pay ma bills and contact a doctor before I leave naija for the US so that they don't stress me at immigration. I don't see any crime in wanting good health care for you and your child in the Us and at the same time getting the benefits that come with it. So stop hating people cos I'm sure that if you had the same opportunity and privilege you will do same.

Why is everyone being aggressive?I think we should direct our anger to our government. You don't have to blame her for seeking a better medical service.
From my ow experience,I can never stay in naija to have any child from my first experience. If I can have my child anywhere as long as I have my money, why not? They denied me too and I went to the UK,paid my bills before going there at all and i got the best treament I expected. I would have paid more here and got rubbish treatment and most likely be paying for my death from my first experience.

US taxpayers do NOT want to shell out to pay some Nigerian's hospital bill to have some random brat....stay home and drop your kid in the fn jungle....stay the f out of my country...we do not owe any Nigerian (nor any other culture) a free ride for medical benefits or any other benefit....get that simple fact through your incredibly thick skull.

The US embassy is not discriminating; it is protecting the interests of US taxpayers and US citizens against malfeasance from lowlifes who arrive in MY country and immediately soak up medical benefits they HAVE NOT EARNED. Go home.

what is so special about American citizenship. if you spend half as much effort to plan for his or her eternal life, i think it will do you and the child much good.

Well I really do not find anything wrong in having children abroad for medical reasons or just for citizenship. Our leaders are really messing up big time and to me it’s like having a plan b for the children. Later in life if they want to study abroad for example it’s always easier with a foreign passport. Also the child will not have to go through some very rigorous process of getting visas. But Nigerians should please stop this habit of not paying their bills or claiming benefits not meant for visitors it’s really embarrassing. I had all my kids abroad and I have never had problem renewing my US visas because I always PAY MY BILLS

I am a Nigerian American born to a Nigerian father and American mother. I myself work for social services in America and most of what you all are saying is true. I am proud to be a Nigerian but the abuse of the American system is just too much. Both of my parents struggled in their earlier years to have me and my sisters. They are now both successful and it is not fair for them to pay for others I am sorry to say. And then what makes me angry is how Nigerians talk down on America. "Oh those people in America ooo" Those Black Americans in America ooo" "those Akatas" If it would not be for the blacks in America like Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, Rosa Parks, there would be no migration to America at all! This conversation would not exist nor this BLOG!!! There is no perfect country. I could say alot about NIGERIANS both here in America and in Nigeria but I'm intelligent to know that not every Nigerian is the same just like not all blacks or whites or Americans are the same. The problem is beyond Visas and having children here. There is a problem with alot of Nigerians and their ability to be more accepting. The mentality needs to change. America is successful because they are accepting, they are for the rights of the people. You tell me what country will allow you to come here and get assistance? Do you know that even the mother who is not a citizen still can get her bills paid for? Sometimes I blame American because it seems as people will sell their souls to come here but then will talk down on the people and country. I am for giving opportunity after all that is how I am who I am. My father was given a student Visa and thats how he was able to come here. America is based on hard work. period. All the movies you watch and see is just that a movie it paints a facade. There is no trick or schemes. JUST WORK!! The sooner Nigerians get that out of their head the easier it will be for all of us.Especially those of us working day in and day out to provide for our families back in Nigeria. I recently just came back from Nigeria in June, it was my first time going as an adult. Though I had fun, Nigeria still has a long way to go. Simple things like sanitation is horrible. To see people not even having lights. It was something I could not even believe until I saw it with my own eyes. I see why people want to escape poverty. Men were proposing marriage to me and my sisters left and right and I know its because we are from America. They saw a way out and I know its because of situations of the country so I know its bad there. So no it is not wrong to want to invest and secure your child's future. If you are responsible enough to make the decision to concieve a child then be responsible enough to support the child financially including the birth. No one owes anyone anything. Be grateful of the opportunity allowed.
