Arrests made over killing of 4 UNIPORT students

Ibim Semenitari is the Rivers State Commissioner for Information
I can confirm to you guys that the Chief of Aluu community has been arrested and is in police custody. Some people I have been in touch with got the info from the Rivers State Commissioner of Police. There are also reports that at least 12 others have been arrested and more arrests will be made in the coming days.

Meanwhile, the deputy registrar of University of Port Harcourt, Williams Modi, said the school will issue a statement once they get all the facts - I.e, the true identities of the victims and what actually transpired on the day of the reported incident.

Also, I heard that residents of the community have started fleeing the area to avoid being arrested. Please continue...

Before I broke the story on Friday, I spoke with three different UNIPORT students, one of them my cousin (he was the one who sent the story to me) and they all said the same thing. That the Aluu community said they killed these boys because they stole. I asked the students what the victims supposedly stole, and they said - the people who killed them said they stole phones and laptops. That was why I made that my headline...

But since then, we've heard different versions of what happened on that early Friday morning...different versions! Below is another one...which suggests the boys didn't steal the phones and laptop but took it by force...

At this point, I really don't care what these boys did. Not that I condone any form of crime, but there's no excuse for what the Aluu community did to these boys. No excuse! Even people that have been prosecuted for a crime and condemned to die are shown some kind of respect. These boys were treated like animals. Maybe even worse. Animals we kill for consumption are not treated like this. So we must all rise and condemn this act. This is the land that will be home to our children and children's children.

The right to life is a fundamental right!

Kill anyone that has hand in there death..show no mercy...let it be an example for those who take law into their own hands...

The killers (number 1 on the list is the person who started chanting 'thief thief'), all deserve the same treatment. Stripped and lynched too. Caused the families of those young guys pain for the rest of their lives. They surely have killed more that just 4 persons.

Its on cool fm 96.9 and on @nigeriainfo993. The sister of one of the victims tekena elkanah, her name is Anne. She was there and said the police gave the people go ahead to kill the victims. That the police van was packed by the side while the atrocity was been committed.

Unknown said...

The law must be allowed to take its course. And for the life of me all the while this was going on where were these police arresting people now? where were they? We seem to be putting our wrong foot forward. We are solving most of our problems from the wrong end. 4 young lives could have been saved if the police did their job. And again were they alerted? Was there no one in that crowd that could alert the police? No elder in that area that could take responsibility and stop these animals? Now that they have killed these boys, are they (the killers)any different? The Bible tells us that the mind of human is INFINITELY wicked!!! How true!! May God rest the souls of these young men and strengthen their families. It is a tragic loss.

I enjoy reading through this blog, I cried so much when I watched the video clip. Whatever these boys did they did not deserve this.pls pls the video clip should be removed, for the sake of their poor loved ones. Even if they were bad boys or good boys, their poor poor mother needs peace at this time, these pictures especially showing how people were callously watching, jeering and calling for their deaths. No mother deserves that, everybody has their perspective to every story but today let us think if ..... They were you son, brother, cousin or even friend.
Nigeria does not inspire an form of encouragement for me to bring my kids home to, what with all these horror stories. Bad things happen everywhere but the made in Nigeria bad things blow ones mind. May their souls rest in peace. Thanks

I WILL KEEP IT SHORT & SIMPLE.

EVERY COMMENTATOR SO FAR HAS PROVED WHY WE AS A CIVILIZED SOCIETY SHOULD NOT CONDONE VIGILANTE ACTION. THE TRUTH GETS LOST & INNOCENT PEOPLE CAN SUFFER.

SO FAR, THERE ARE SO MANY VERSIONS OF WHAT REALLY HAPPENED. PEOPLE SETTLE SCORES, NOBODY KNOWS THE WHOLE TRUTH. PEOPLE BEAR FALSE WITNESS.

MY LITTLE ADVICE IS FOR THOSE CONCERNED TO SEARCH THEIR CONSCIENCE AND ASK A SIMPLE QUESTION - HOW DOES THIS HELP THEIR SOCIETY? CHAOS BREEDS CHAOS. THOSE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE 'VIGILANTE' ACTION HAVE CLEARLY SHOWN THEY ARE CRIMINALS THEMSELVES.

This is Unjust, Barbaric, Terrible, Savage, and Gory. Jungle justice in Nigeria reminds me of an incidence (while working as a Banker in a small town, Iyamoye-KG), where I went out at about 10pm (not knowing that they had curfew in that place)to get some medications for myself because I wasnt feeling fine. I fell into the hands of these Vigilante group, and they began to slap me on the back with cutlass and whip. Immediately they labelled me with so many names (that I am not), threatening to batter me. As they were dealing with me, I could remember calling the name of JESUS ( I think twice) and at that moment I began to stand up(cos they laid me flat on the ground and commanded me not to stand up)and I noticed a small opening between 2 of them in front of me(they surrounded me), Calling that MIGHTY name - of JESUS - I took off at a speed I cant describe till date. I keep thanking GOD anytime I remember that incident, for HIS Infinite and Divine Mercy.
Few days later, I saw one of their leaders telling a man that he could easily kill anyone he catches at night, kill him , and hide his dead body and no one would know about it.
We need to; "Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour" 1 Peter 5:8

My heart bleeds from the horrific video i just watched of people deciding to take lives of four promising young boys in the most gruesome manner... The man in front still spoke to them and popped their heads with more force than a carpenter uses to hit a nail into the wall; and went on to burn them. This confirms that many so called humans have lost the very essence of their humanity, they have lost their very souls. No matter what anyone did, no one has the right over another person's life: people are so fast to get petrol, tire, matches, why cant they carry the suspect to the Police and let the law have its full course? Most times its innocent people that they end up burning, all because someone started shouting 'Thief, Ole'etc. I pray that God comforts the family. Nevertheless, justice must be done. The Rivers State Government must act fast otherwise, there'll be a wave of human rights actions and even international organisations. Hmm...It is well. God help us!

I think the commissioner of police of this community should resign. Since he's not capable of protecting the lives of the people in the community. I wonder in a community where police and security exist and such a act of injustice occurred. These are people that have not been convicted and proved guilty under the court of law, these are the people that are future lawyer, doctors, etc. Even if they have stolen, this doesn't mean they have to go through capital punishment, gruesome murder. The government needs to find the killers of these boys and let the face the judiciary of the nation; and make them a scapegoat onto others, who passes jungle justice towards fellow human beings. it's so pathetic being a parent and seeing four promising guys maimed, tortured, and killed in such a terrible way. I'm so sorry for the parents and I hope God will console them. The government should also find a way to compensate the families involved. Although money can not replace their sons, but this would be a warning to the government, and community members. Adieu.

CARNAGE OF OUR MIND
I saw the picture and the video the three UNIPORT students, beaten to death and burnt. I was shocked and till in shock, angry and in much pain for the families, friends, relatives et.c of these young promising students.

I keep wondering why they killed this boys like rat, over alleged stolen phones and laptops. I wonder what kind of individuals and what kind of heart they have. We complain about Boko Haram attack in the North, and we want peace within our environment.
I have been wondering since I saw the Picture, and later the video.
People were actually gathered from the start of the guy removing their clothes, beat them, I even saw the guy in the video throwing a BLOCK at them. I heard words like, “E le yi ko to ku” haaaaaaaaaaa.
Someone was also there to record the entire carnage.
Where is the love for our neighbour?
Where is the passion?
MY CONCERN!
I keep wondering that youth (HUMAN) can actually go to the point of staying throughout the entire massacre, without a single individual calling for resistance in his/her own voice and maybe others watching could have been triggered to change the course of the death of this promising young guys.
What are we driving ourselves into?
What are we building in our minds?
I will refer back to write up on OCTOBER 1st, (MY THOUGTH AS NIGERIA MARKS 52 YEARS)
“Where is the Nigeria we are looking for? Is not on the MAP is in our heart and mind, and heart of heart”
Nigeria will be a better place if another man’s hunger can be our individual responsibility.
My Condolence to the family of these young boys. I hope the securities operatives will dig into this matter and bring out the people involved in this carnage.

We are unevolved souls.

The killers knew that these were university students... one was saying, as he was hitting a badly injured victim, 'you paid your school fees y/day abi?...'

Another killer was laughing as he smashed a boy's head with a concrete block.

People in the crowd were chanting die! die! die! as others hit the boys with sticks.

One boy had part of his brain sticking out, yet he was still alive and covering his head with his hands.

The 'lucky' boy was the one already dead by the time they were set on fire. He didn't move at all. The other 3 knew what was happening... one even blocked his nostrils to prevent inhaling the fire.

We are a crude lot. Unevolved souls, is what we are.

No man on earth has the right to terminate the life of a fellow man. This is the most gruesome killing i have ever seen in my life. The guy that was clubbing this young men with the heavy wood, what was going in on in his mind as he hits the heads and the faces of the young men to pieces. Heaven will never forgive this nation if the river state and the federal govt. fails to address this issue the way it should be addressed. The man that called them thieves should be arrested, the villager ruler should be arrested, everyone standing by to watch the killings should be arrested. Now the man that clubbed them to death should be arrested and given the same treatment. May God save this nation from blood shedding

Really, and I mean that anybody thats able to kill even a thief this way they killed those four guys, must be more than an ordinary criminal. The act is horrible. There is no way you suppose to justify that killing at all. I pray that everyone involved to that, should fall under all the weight and punishment of human law, and also the law of nature. Its pure wickedness. What did they steal to deserve such death? Your government is there stealing you to misery, and you cant rise and go against them! Its to waste poor innocent blood that you see ok. God we need salvation here!

The crowd who were also there watching what happened to those boys are also heartless. If it were their relatives, they will not allow such happen. Even our so called governrment people that steal billions of naira have gone scot free, i mean, no matter what crime they have committed, they are not meant to be killed. Not that i am supporting what they did but i mean, lets all be fair. Linda, God bless you for all your effort.

I am surprised that it wasn't just the hoodlums that joined in this inhuman act but even those who claim to be parents and who claim to be good citizens. 30 sec of the video left me uneasy up till this moment. I am traumatized, people.

Anonymous said...

I have been unable to have a good night sleep bcos of this ugly incidence. Killing another human being like you, I mean this is someone else's brother, son... ah haaaa over a false accusation. I can't imagine what those boys parents will be going through now if I am feeling this way.
As a matter of fact, tears well up in my eyes each time I come across this story and even now as I am typing this comment. I can't stop hearing that voice of a cruel man in my head saying "die! die!!" and hitting the poor boy trying to get up with a huge stick on his head.
I really wish, hope and pray that everyone who took part in the killing including those who saw it happen instead of calling security agents to their rescue but prefered filming and taking
photographs shall all die a slow painful death. Their coming generations will partake in the share of the painful agony. (SORRY I have to curse them).
May the gentle souls of those boys rest in eternal peace. ADIEU!

Been away for a while and recently decided to catch up on happenings around. Going through this blog and I was just shaking my head. All sorts of venom and vituperation. Ibos against yorubas, ibos against everyone, yorubas against annangs, and everything in between!

Pls be patient, am heading somewhere. We are a people of reactionaries. And we mostly react in two ways; based on d present issue, and according to deep seated resentment or stereotype.

The reason why we can't move beyond that to get to fundamental causes is what separates us from greatness.

The community that killed those boys, gruesome as it was, were reacting to reacting to something. Many of commenter her calling for d community to be sacked and ppl burnt the same way are also reacting. It serves little purpose, apart from rave and forget about later, until something else to rave about rears its head.

How do we know that some ppl who are victims of theft, robbery rape etc have not in equal venom cursed that such perpetrators of such be put to such gruesome deaths as this? And if u say u can't pray such on ppl, alas! U've just done on this community;and if someone there also gets a callous death, we come back here to react and thus continue the vicious cycle!

Fundamental questions:

What actually makes a student go into cultism knowing d risks of such an end?

What makes a community or set of ppl bludgeon a fellow. Human being and watch with relish?

What are the issues relating to tribe that is subtly an undercurrent in this case? How do we view ourselves, from prejudice or as just human beings?

What form of security do we really need?

We can to ask ourselves other fundamentals and then move to looking for solutions to the problems those questions raise.

But then again we can only do that with a clear head, not colour by religious or tribal sentiments.

I hope the save aluu campaign lasts, unfortunately it may not. There are too many ppl who are only reacting to the gory sight, and when d other tribal hate issues start tugging at us, we'll go back into our cocoons and some may even say "serves them right"

We need to be the generation that thinks, not just react.

P.s. I'm typing as my thought are coming, so there may be typos.

Every single one was a Jesus worshipping christian. Islam never looked more attractive.
Gay marriages, sex with animals, gay bishops presiding over church folk, and this inhumane act called jungle justice, all done by church going, Holy Ghost filled, tongue speaking christians makes me want to bag my faith, tie a stone to it and drown it in the Nile.
