MI writes on the Rick Ross 'Hold Me Back' video shot in Nigeria

See what the rapper wrote on his website below and tell us what you think...
Does it make you angry? Does it rile you to see your country portrayed as poor and suffering and full of struggle? It burns you, does it not? To have some foreigner- who knows nothing of your history and pain, of the stories that flow within your blood- to have this foreigner come in and tell your story? Is it not the height of disrespect and insensitivity? Does it not chafe against the thick skin you have grown to cover your other wounds?
Please continue...

Does it not make you angry? We should wax sanctimonious about national pride being slighted. We should vent our displeasure online. We should occupy something. Because God forbid the truth ever be told about what things really are. God forbid a stranger reminds us about those things we choose to ignore every day.
God forbid we ever face the truth about ourselves. God forbid we do not go on the internet and rail about how our country is being cast in bad light. God forbid we do not talk about how there is a small minority which lives better than portrayed. God forbid we do not ignore truth one more time. God forbid we don’t.

Thank you all for making my day!!
But seriously, this is a bit scary. From reading all these comments, I don't think Nigerians get sarcasm.

M.I simply meant lets wake up, stop abusing our country on the media and get to work to bring the change, or else these kind of videos will be regarded as the generally accepted Nigeria. God forbid.

The comments people post here shows the truth, Nigerian youths have so missed it. We are the slaves of ourselves

Apparently you don't get what sarcasm is - go back to Basic English Literature Class 101 and stop displaying your illiteracy here. What MI said was clear sarcasm with irony and if you don't get it go to a bookstore, amazon.com, or Ebay.com and purchase Basic English Literature and Composition book for Dummies.

it cracks me up how 95% of the people here don't get his sarcasm. MI is trying to say that there is nothing wrong with what Rick Ross did,but there is something wrong with the state of our country. If Nigeria was in a better state, then a lare part of the material used for this video would'nt exist. But we cannot attack a foreigner for paying attention to what we have chosen to ignore...

@kems and ireti, if u live in a country outside of Nigeria where you daily strive to potray an image contraray to what these white folks believe then you may be able to feel MI's pulse on this. Why would the Nigerian censorship board allow such a derogatory flick get air play whilst Femi Kuti is banned for explicit content? This is just an indication of the Imperialism of the West on us and so many Nigerians dont see anything wrong with the video. It amazes me everytime i see images of nigeria and its only the slums that show up...I left naija a while ago but i still have vivid pictures of cream areas like Lekki and ikoyi....pathetic !!

Nigerians, M.I, is making a good point in the name of sarcasm, so people bashing him are clearly not smart enough to understand simple English language.

Although, it's quite shameful to see the REALITY of Nigeria, bcos we are in a state of denial and will like to portray enjoyment with big houses, big cars, big parties etc. rather than show the TRUE STATE/CONDITION of Nigeria. High percentage of Nigerians, average Nigerians don't have access to basic necessities. Nigerians are suffering really bad.

If anything, it should be a wake up call for us to stop deceiving ourselves, and face the truth about the country. We Nigerians are not doing enough to fight against the corrupt government. Nigerian youth are too quiet and allowing these things to happen bcos older generation have a different mentality than us.

TIME TO WAKE UP!!!

Nigerian's are ignorant people and happy to live in darkness and celebrate those that steal our money. 70% of people in nigeria live in poverty. we can paper the crack with a false bling bling lifestyle in the videos. so if we need an outsider to show us the truth so be it. time to stop the suffering and smiling.... truth be told...rick ross video potrays what MOST nigerians go through day to day which is sad...
and my only question i have for M.I is...where's the youngman who sang CROWDED MENTALITY? where's the dude who waxed lyrical on MONEY SLOW TO ENTER? where's the man who rapped his heart out on FAST MONEY FAST CARS? where did that guy go to?
i'll tell ya..he's gotten lost in the lucre he earned because nigerians (me inclusive) bought multiple copies of that first album because it was laced with truth. it was full of songs that spoke to the mind.
now all he sings about is girls and cars and swag and power and him being igwe...
i'm happy that M.I hurts like many of us who saw that video...

I don't need some dumb American rapper who mostly raps about doing drugs and crime to remind me about poverty in my country. Do you really think Rick Ross cares about those people in that video. The only thing he is going to accomplish with that video is to fortify the already prejudiced view of the western world that Africa is just about hunger and squalor and of course make some money for himself which is the ulterior motive in the first. place.

Unknown said...

You don't get it Kems. Rick Ross claims to be a gangster rapper. The song is about surviving from any kind of oppression. Why do you think is best to shoot the video? Abuja? Do you think foreigners never seen all the great videos made in Nigeria to know the difference??? If you want slum in south africa or ghana or usa you would surely get it, but our artist choose to shoot at posh places. Even the american version of the video from rick ross was shot in the slums! MI is right. Personally, I like the video. In USA, the govt would be thinking of how to generate revenue by attracting other big artist to come and shoot in their slums. More revenue means growth. In Nigeria...well, you know the rest.

PS..i did not like the depiction in the video as well but FOR GOD'S SAKE ..understand the point MI's trying to make..SMH!!!

The video depicts the truth about the condition in which regretably over 80% of Nigerians are subjected to. The video also painfully deepens the negative light in which the western world view us Africans. A balance would have been atttained had the video shown presence of some form of civilisation. I live in Australia and the people here think the whole of Africa is like SOmalia. They find it difficult to believe that anything good can come out of our Africa. This hurts the ego of people who have worked hard to represent Nigeria in a positive light overseas.
The leaders have failed us, we work hard to achieve something but unfortunately this crumbles so easily with such videos...

Besides, when Nigerians shoot videos in other countries, they do not portray those country as poor and dying. All MI has said is that the way Nigerians are portrayed as suffering and poor is not cool. That is why in the US, once you mention you are Nigerian, they tell you they have always wanted to visit Nigeria because of the Jungles. All these videos foreign artiste come to shoot in Nigeria, only portrays the bad side of Nigeria. Why was the video not shot in VGC or Lekki or Banana Island or somewhere else. Or why do they not portray our Good Side. Why must we be portrayed as suffering/dying/illiterates/mal-nourished. Those Nigerians who live in the US, know how stuffs like this affect them and the racist comment that are made once they mention they are Nigerians. MI, you have said nothing wrong.

ok so he depicted the slums of lagos. my god get over it. every metropolis has a ghetto. we dey talk about ours have u seen the slums in india. its crazy. and its in the big cities like delhi and mumbai to name a few. there are the favelas in rio de janiero. so this is ours. lets deal with it. now with what MI uttered about his feelings for the vid, its on him like we r here bloggin, we all have rights to express our thoughts so thats his. but ull see Jamaican artists show their ghettos in their videos because its a part of them and it shows their struggles and who they are today so the slums is their introduction to world of what they went through to get to where they are. so its like them showing the world their source of motivation. so we nigerians that were raised in the slums can relate and be proud of the change it has made in our lives today for having gone thru that reality or we can lambast rick ross all we want. me personally, i see nothing wrong with the video except for the Biafra intro. it doesn't have any significance on the video at all. we all know that Nigeria has evolved and still evolving into the great country that we dream and portray. and we know that we'll definitely get there. and pls. we are still and always will be the Giant of africa in may ways.

Honestly I see nothing WRONG in this music video. Rick Ross shot almost same video showing out the rough side of the united states.. his aim was simply to let the government know that nothing can be hidden. There are people in the country who needs our assistance especially from the government... The struggling people who need us. He did same for his country... ,"looking down on these niggas" that's a line from rick ross on the music video.. He was simply saying that the Gov. Are looking down on the Nigerian people. Tell yourself the truth.. The Nigerian people need support from the government... It is a case of "the truth is bitter, but must be told". Rick Ross had no Negative thoughts on his mind while shooting this music video.. You may not understand.. Wish I could type more.. I Disagree with MI. .... KAHA

Actually you are the dumb one, what the hell did you learn in English Literature class in high school. Are you saying you never heard of sarcasm, irony, oxymoron, parody and all these literary terms. It's either you had a dunce for English Teacher or you are dense. There is nothing complicated about what MI said and he was in no way sitting on the fence. This is a classic example of very simple/easy sarcasm mixed with irony and if you don't get it then you are dense. Please go online and read what sarcasm is or go get English Literature book for dummies. Stop spewing your illiteracy here.
