2yr old boy 'plays' on 100ft balcony ledge for over five minutes

A toddler came within inches of plummeting 100 feet to his death after climbing on to a high-rise flat balcony as his mother slept inside.

Dramatic footage showed the two-year-old crawling along, and sitting on, the balcony's ledge eight storeys up, while horrified passers-by looked on.

One terrified onlooker was so concerned that she filmed the boy nonchalantly peering down and dangling his legs over the drop.

Neighbour Debbie Green said: 'I was talking to my son's girlfriend on our front door when she looked up behind me and said: 'there's a baby up there on the balcony.'
'I turned round and saw the kid up there just playing on the balcony with no protection - I thought he was going to fall, I was sure he was going to die.
'The police arrived after about six minutes but it felt like hours - I had to go back in the house to try and calm down because I couldn't watch.

'I have never felt so scared in all my life, it was horrendous.
'I couldn't believe someone would let their child do that.
'But they have a chair on the balcony that he was able to use to climb up onto the ledge.'

Debbie's husband John, added: 'After the police went round the father just calmly walked onto the balcony and moved the chair They didn't seem that phased by it all.
'I'm amazed the kid was able to keep his balance up there.
'One of our neighbours said he wanted to go and do something, but we realised if he had then the child might have leant to look at us and fallen - so we waited for the police to come.
'There are loads of people who would like to have kids and then there are these people who let their children play on a balcony and ignore them.
'He's obviously been up there several times before because he was incredibly careful to climb down.'
John said he felt like he was about to film a child's death.
Officers arrived at the block of flats in Wyken, in Coventry, seven minutes later to find the mother and a man asleep inside.
They said she claimed the boy was safe because of the delicate pigeon netting over the balcony.
When approached, the mother claimed she had in fact been in the kitchen, not asleep, while the boy played outside.
She said the doors onto the veranda don't shut properly allowing the boy easy access to the outside world.
Claiming she was 'shocked' when police told her what her son had been doing, she told The Sun: 'I won’t let him out of my sight now. I’d like to thank the neighbours over the way who saw him'

Police are taking no further action.

A lot of senseless mums exist in the UK. Sometimes kids are felled and killed by plasma Television sets. You can google to find out. Some kids also died by shutting themselves inside washing machines while their mothers gossiped on the phone or whatever.

Mothers in Africa and Asia are probably better mothers. Imagine sleeping like a log of wood while a toddler almost fell off a balcony. She needs to get a job and keep the poor kid in creche for safety. Fat fool or skinny idiot? She should buy a playpen and keep the boy inside it while sleeping. Lucky boy!

Do you blame the boy? Blame England with her tiny tiny apartments. The boy probably needed more space.

A 2yr old can't be this composed in the face of such danger/high altitude. I can bet my left ball that Oluwa was involved in it.

Thank God it wasn't a different story oh.

But why does a building that high have such a low balcony that even a toddle can climb on? Isn't that a death trap? The building needs to be remodeled.

Police came within six minutes... Hmmnn SMH for naija.

She was sleeping with a man inside? She was probably sleeping "it" off.

I will stereotype estate residents and say she was high on drugs maybe and fell asleep. Kitchen indeed. However as a mum anything can happen even to those who live in orange county. Thank God. Not sure why no one ran yo to ring the door bell and tell the mum.

@Ano 10.10am, that was too harsh. Or is there any other thing to it.

My sentiments exactly, why not try to find d child's apartment nd alert the mum.Saving the child's life is more important than filming and passing judgement.Children born these days are too rascally so i guess mums have too be extra vigilant.

Anonymous said...

The police arrived within 7 minutes If its this 14th failed state in the world when will they arrive!

Anonymous said...

Thank God nothing happen to the boy. Parents should be more vigilant with their children

It wpuld have been more appropriate to call d fire service. Social services need to be on d parents case - most likely a pair of chav junkies

Na Naija village woman and yeye husband. They don reach paradise, no need to work, get free housing to produce more delinquents. Too cold outside, so na to warm up bed them sabby. You can take the Naija from Nigeria, but can not tale the Nigerian away from village mentality.

With this, people still thinks there is no GOD. I v witness same, but without shouting or make noise while the child was doing his THING, someone gently held him to the wall before other people came to rescue both. THERE IS GOD, if it's not your time to die, nothing can happen to you.
GOD BLESS YOU ALL

This is awesome, from an awesome GOD.

Whew, had goose bumps all over!!! for those of us who were quick to condem the mother, remember she couldn't have let it happen on purpose(am not excusing her) but I didn't hear anyone condemn d father who is also a parent and so, responsible for the child too. Children at that age (toddlers) are highly mobile, and because they are exploring , need constant attention, dats why they are called *terrible twos* 2. People who were also running their mouths about the people not running there to rescue the child, imaging barging into a house whose owners you don't know( its not 9ja u knw) and perchance the child slips and falls in the process? IAm sure the person's thank you will be in jail. Thank God nothing happened. It has happened in 9ja and out of the 3 children I know, only 1 survived after sustaining head injury. They about the same age too. May God protect our children. MMM

This can only be God at work bro. The Bible says He that watches over us never sleep nor slumber. Praise God for the todler.

first of all, kudos to whoever took time to take this photos, cos if not for you LIBers would not have the chance to comment. but common in such situation i dont think taking pictures should be your next line of action. And how difficult is it to run up and call the attention of the mother? ok a very good excuse could be, there is no possibility of entering d building without the door bell code ... in case of next time, you can simply dial any of the apartment numbers just to get in ..and people lets not be too quick to judge the mum, cos we know how kids are. may god keep them all safe ..
