Malawi to overturn its ban on homosexuality, female president says

President Joyce Banda, who was elected the first female president of Malawa just last month following the death of President Bingu wa Mutharika, said today that her government will overturn the country's ban on homosexuality, the first African country to do so since 1994. That's her plan, whether she will get parliamentary support remains to be seen.

In Malawi, homosexuality is punishable by 14 years in prison.

Does Malawi not have more important issues than homosexuality??? I see that western aid agencies are running Malawi behind closed doors or else this she-man would not be talking about overturning the ban on homosexuality!

So malawi has good roads, 24/7electricity, traffic lights, booming technological industries, water flowing through taps, I mean it must have all this and many more then..... Smh at african leaders!

Anonymous said...

Why is homosexuality becoming the main topic when it's a small percentage of them.

Malawi is one of the poorest country in Africa, so there's more for her to face than worry about what two men are doing in their privacy. This is what scares me about women in power they become so sentimental about everything. Well, Margaret Thatcher was an exception.

but peeps lets pls lets be sincere sndin such ppl to jail for 14yrs won't change anything nd it wont stp dem from doin wat d want to do, we shld jst be concerned abt wat to teach our lil ones d fear of God nd d right choices to make. being gay is beta dan killin nd sheddin innocent blood atleast dat way ur nt hurtin any1 jst d same way prostitutes dnt hurt any1 cz its dia bodies. Im jst sayin dis is ma humble opinion. Lets kip for God to visit d hearts of such ppl so d can see d lyt

When poverty and HIV AIDS is tearing Africa apart, this is what this foolish woman wants to prioritize in her country??? They watch Obama and now they want to copy him! Why African leaders can not copy the good things, such as good road, schools and healthcare for their people? It is the way people use their sexuality that will improve her country??? I'm really sad to be African! Africa is cursed!

Bostonberry Ashewo onisekuse osi. I'm sure yr husband does not know d kind of trash he married. As for Madam presido maybe her children are gay. They should look for better things to deliberate on jo.

Uche said...

Homosexuality should not be a topic for anyone to approve or disapprove except in religious institutions. Everyone should have the right to choose and further sort their choice out with their maker if they believe in one. Just like there are no laws against fornication from the senate or parliament and against paedophiles marrying 13 year olds and becoming senators so should there be no laws against another type of sexual act especially when it has to do with people's personal property. My only grouse is when other people are attacked or affected physically- eg rape, child sexual abuse , domestic violence , emotional abuse of any kind. This is how a forward thinking country should be.

Anonymous said...

if d legislaures of malawi allow her 2 have her way, den dat country must be as dumb as d name sounds

Anonymous said...

I've read that Malawi has more pressing or important problems than sexuality. I think sexuality needs to be addressed. The lady shows intelligence and foresight. All these homophobic countries and homophobes fly in the face of commonsense, biological and medical fact. Nature made some people gay, just as so many other creatures, from lions and elephants to domestic animals are gay. Please do some googling on sexuality. And, by the way, shutting gays up in prisons for 14 years, is laughable. I hear prisons are same-gender institutions. So, the Nigerian Senate would shut an active gay man in all-male institution for 14 years and think that will eradicate 'gayism'. I recall Soyinka's advice to the Senators and think how right he was.

Naijarian, i c u r as foolish as ur friend Anon 7:22. FYI d kitchen belongs 2 whosoever has an empty/hungry stomach.

Actually you got this wrong. Its the hidden nature of homosexuality in africa that is the real cause of the spread of hiv/aids. A married man that intrinsically wants to sleep with men ll do so! Unprotected and go back home to his wife; they'll have a baby that's hiv positive cos a. He doesn't know he is positive and b. The shame of going to the clinic is still real in africa. And No Africa isn't cursed, we simply have challenges like the rest of the world so pls help yourself by being a bit more analytical. That's what africa really needs
