Outcome of FEC meeting: No going back on fuel subsidy removal

From Punch:
The Federal Executive Council on Wednesday said it would not rescind the removal of the subsidy on petroleum products.
Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku, told newsmen at the end of the emergency FEC meeting at the Council Chambers of the State House, Abuja, that government was not unmindful of the pains being experienced by Nigerians, as a result of the action.
He said the Federal Government had commenced a ‘massive mass transit scheme’ to cushion the effect of the subsidy removal on transportation. Under the scheme, thousands of mass transit vehicles are to be distributed.
These people are trying Nigerians sha. Continue reading...

He was joined by the Minister of Trade and Investment, Mr. Olusegun Aganga; and the Minister of Transport, Idris Umar.

Thieving idiots. Massive transit scheme... Another means to chop money. Even if, why not implement scheme before removing subsidy? Or fix power situation? We need blood to flow... Massive mass removal of these ppl who have held Nigeria back all these years.

I am sorry for the IQ level of the people ruling us.
If you analyse the amount they will use in buying the buses at an inflated rate to put money in the same set of people's pocket and the money removed from the subsidy it will come to Zero.
This people has no sense of direction

3 men; one American; one German and one Nigerian were discussing. The American said "my country is blessed and gifted with technological advancement. Imagine; a child was born with no legs; we attached mechanical legs to the child and guess what?! The child is now an Olympic Sprinter!!" The German said "we in my country are similarly blessed; if not even better.. A girl was born in Hamburg wit no arms; we attached mechanical arms and now she is the country's heavyweight boxing champion; in the male category too!!" The Nigerian cleared his throat and said "All those ones are small small tins!! In a small village in Bayelsa state, Nigeria; a baby was born with no head.. We attached coconut.. And guess what?!! Now he's the PRESIDENT! GEJ no get any sense

Nigerians!! do not sell your birthright to a bunch of rogues and demons, we have a right to life much more than they cos we put them there to represent us and not to kill us while enriching themselves. God knows how much Patience (madam umbrera) has smuggled out of Nigeria already. Bunch of thieves, evil minded people.

its unfortunate that Nigerians dont seem to understand the impact or the effect of what our president is trying to achieve. fuel subsidy is unrealistic and at best is partly the reason why we are suffering. Granted, the masses will surfer now, but in the long run businesses and employment opportunities will emerge from the several private refining companies that will emerge. look at the communication sector now and compare to what was before. apart from the refineries, support service companies will also emerge-more job opportunities. do not be deceived by these labor leaders and the direct beneficiaries of the subsidy payment. reason Nigeria! reason naija,

Hmmn obviously the protests didnt work but boycotting fuel could work. stop buying fuel, use bicycle, walk atleast if we all come together to do this, they may have a rethink when noone is buying their fuel! but i doubt if nigerians will want to do this.

Introducing a mass transit scheme???I don't get it. Is that the solution to the problem? Are they aware of the fact that price increase in transportation is just one of the many effects of the subsidy removal? How did these people get these positions? what are their qualifications? Must we go through this hardship in the name of democracy?I blame us the electorates for voting them in for all the wrong reasons, however,i believe it's not too late for us to apply a bit of damage control now before it gets out of hand. The time has come for us to act and do whatever it takes to get these numbskulls back to where they belong by every means necessary.

This is not a totally stupid idea. It just happened at the wrong time. The government needs the money to repair our oil refineries. How can an oil producing country import oil? In the long run, we will enjoy the harvest. No government has made such a bold step. I commend GEJ on his bold step. It will not be easy, but it will be worth it my fellow Nigerians.

Anonymous said...

Who is importing the buses and at what cost?

Son of Babylon said...

Mass transit...lol as in underground train or tube system? If the Mass transit is a bunch of buses that Fashola is already doing anyway then that is ridiculous.

If Nigerians let this happen this time, we might as well put chains on our necks because we will be their slaves for a very long time. STRIKE STRIKE and please BURN some buildings down.

Why dont these bastards want to make Nigeria the GIANT that she claims to be? it is not that we do not understand that subsidy is a waste.
the problem is that this govt has no moral right to preach waste and austerity to us.
Do you have a clue what the clowns in NASS earn?
Do you know how much was budgeted in the budget for food and stationeries for Sambo's office?
Do you know how much it costs to maintain over 40 ministers (when GEJ could have sorted out a bill to reduce the constitutional req on the number of ministers and reduced it by at least half by now)?
Do you know how much has been budgeted for the repair of Benin/Ore road in the last 5 years and nothing has been done, yet blood flows ceaselessly on that road?
Do you know that NNPC is an unaudited agency that sells oil with no records whatsoever?
There are a million and one things this govt can do to show that it is ready to cut cost and reduce waste and after wards talk of removing subsidy and some of us will lead protests to support the action.
As it is, the economics of it and the silly power point slides that Sanusi and Iweala are showing are of no use. If fuel subsidy is the waste that will crash this country, let it crash.
clowns sit in the National assembly and talk rubbish and millions is spent as salaries and allowances for those thieves, yet nothing is done to reduce the cost of governance and you are telling us that the country will collapse if you don't remove subsidy.
I say let it collapse.
If you can't tackle the cabal feeding rich on fuel importation, then so be it.
There shall be blood!!

Nigeria "leaders" love forcing things down the throat of the populace they are suppose to listen to and obey as in the case of the western nations they very much like to "copy copy". CBN Dictator commands "go cashless or be penalized, withdraw more than stipulated amount from your hard earned money and be penalized".
Years of military brutalization has turned these imposed leaders into monsters.
Who does the thinking for the FEC dictators? Sometimes chimps and other times, Gorillas.

If for two decades successive governments have been trying to deregulate the down stream without success then they may have a cogent reason for going by this way. I will therefore ask Nigerians to persevere. We cannot continue to borrow money to finance out budget I bought about 13 litres for N2000 this morning at Abule Egba. It is not easy but we can win this war at the end.

It is not sensible to remove fuel subsidy abi?
What if after the removal, I can still get buses that can move me around and the commodity sellers assess subsidized transport system so that prices of commodities can be stabilized while all civil servants taking N18000 per month get a monthly fuel allowance the moment they buy a car just like some private entities pay spouse and children allowances to married members of staff only.
The bottom line for me is that we should avoid subsidizing the middle class and the rich for now while we get public private partnership to jumpstart our economy. The middle class and the rich will get a better pricing in 18 months as the deregulation is been executed.
I would not support that govt again build refineries and put the public servants in charge so that they can continue their sabotage activities and milk the place dry.
The president’s action will lead to a win-win situation and if govt has gone ahead to get 1600 buses through the NLC/TUC venture, it means there are plans before now but it could be better started though. Let's suggest ways to ensure the palliatives mentioned and others to be discussed have immediate impact on the masses and from what I have seen, they will be put into full implementation.
This country belongs to all of us I am sure we are closer to the breakthrough that we have been.
God bless Nigeria

@annonymous 9:57pm,jan 04th.its nt tht sm of us donnot know the ills and gains.what we are saying is that it could have been done in phases.first the govt could have started by reducibg their running cost even if its by one third.the one third can be put into the so called mass transit scheme.this scheme should have kicked off months before the intended date of removal.secondly, aside from transporting us back and forth to our work places, would they also make provision for the trailers bringing pepper, livestock and foodstuff from the north?otherwise how else will the cost of food remain same as these items arent transpoirted by "wishing"!ghana having discovered oil, built a refinery in 2years.and please people should stop using the telecomms industry as a yardstick.you dont know what crappy service we are getting till you have travelled and seen a difference.internet service abroad is less than 1,000:00 nigerian money and this is minus all the freebies that comes from just owning a line.but most importantly, talking on the phone isnt as important as feeding, clothing and shelter which will be gravely affected by fuel price increment.tell me a business in nigeria that isnt dependent on a type of fuel.be it kerosene, diesel, petrol or gas!!!!the rural dwellers must transport their crops to the urban areas.they didnt need a phone to do this.however they need transporatation which is powered by fuel directly or indirectly.please lets take a long moment to think.we will sacrifice if our govt officials will sacrifice.otherwise, nigeria must burn!!!!

Anonymous said...

@abujakenneth,i agree that we should stop borrowing to fund our budget.but do you have full information of what oyr budget is made up of?recurrent expenditures!!!!do you know what that simply means?running cost for govt officials eg foreign trips,feeding,1st ladys wardrobe, dentist, toilet paper, food and you name it.we are the only country in the world with our capital(infrastructures etc) exp lower than running cost aka party money!if we were borrowing for the right reasons then i would second you,but borrowing to fund a budget that takes care of the people in government more than the people they are elected to serve is pure evil.if the present government wanted to earn our trust in believing they mean well in the removal of subsidy funds from the budget, its at the time of presenting the budget that we shoukd have seen a slash in the cost of keeping govt officials swimming in mad comfort while 2/3 of the people live in abject poverty!you can buy fuel at 2000:00.lucky you!some families havent seen 2000 in a month!go to bed without food and dont attempt to eat for 24hours and picture a 2yrs old in this condition.ngozi okonjo iweala came by saying govt exp must go down.that was before she was allocated her portofolio and the spoils of office.even as a top shot in world bank, being a govt official in nigeria is a different level of enjoyment.thats why they usually want to die there.for our own good, lets protest this.otherwise we will be the ones to suffer as the armed robbers would attack us and not them!

My fellow Nigerians! i greet u o. this is a very sensitive issue that is creating even more divide amongst our people. we have religious problems, ethnic disputes and now we cant even agree on the fuel subsidy issue. most see it as a step in the right direction that would improve the state of the country in future. others see it as a means of futhering corruption, oppressing the poor and creating harsh living conditions. but come o people, have we forgotten God in all these trials? no matter our differences this is the time to come together to pray for this country. the most fighting u can do is on your knees. d govt ure rioting against r smiling and having fec meetings. without removal of fuel subsidy Nigeria was moving to harsh tymz ahead due to the extreme corruption and bad govt, with removal of fuel subsidy we face harsh tymz as well. either which way it would lead us down the same road. let us pray for this country and come together as a people, not in violence but in peaceful unity, because no matter how many tymz u curse jonathan and the govt, it is only God that would see us thru d situation. #GodBlessNigeria

have over 50 ministers, reduce
that to 36 (constitution) and

Over 800,000.00/day for

N3million/day over N1.2billion/

$1.5million/year; the Presidency’s
medical expenses cost tax payers
over N2million/day.
Imagine the staggering amount
we’ll save from cutting the pay
of figure-head ward councillors
in their thousands. If we halve
the pay of Ambassadors, we will
raise millions of dollars for capital

Sometimes I laugh after reading some comments on Linda's blog. Some will open their mouth and call the President a retard when they are more retard and stupid than the President. Have these stupid set of people thought how wise it is to spend over 30% of our annual budget on payment of subsidy alone? Do they know that the money can be better use by Government to provide some of these lacking social amenities like; good roads, electricity, good health care, and improve our manufacturing sector? NLC and TUC are anti-change agents. Moreover, NLC and TUC are been led by touts and illiterates who are bunch of fools and lack the understanding to support and bring change in this country. How can anything work in Nigerian when government spends 30% of their total revenue to service few individuals? Let us all reason with the Government. Please.
